From Me To You...

Welcome

to the January edition of Up The Hill magazine!

Happy New Year! You had to know it was coming, an editorial about resolutions. It is the time of year after all.

My resolutions are probably much the same as many of yours. In the past I have resolved to eat less and move more. That one is not fun, but it works... over the last year I have lost over 20lbs following that mindset. I fell off the proverbial wagon many times and I did not enjoy most of it, but there is a great satisfaction once the pounds finally start to disappear. I really thought I was doing well in my goal until I renewed my driver’s license recently and discovered that I am still 20lbs heavier than I was when we moved here 13 years ago. Rats.

Another resolution I tried in the past was to eat less chocolate. That was a non starter. I really don’t even know why I suggested it in the first place.

A big one for me was to stop procrastinating.

I am living in the Land of Last Minute Tasks and I am their queen. Putting things off until I have no choice but to finish them is my raison d’etre - or reason to be if you prefer English.

There are always so many other things I would rather do than whatever it is that I have to do.

Part of my problem is the lack of focus that has seemed to follow... Squirrel!!!

On to this year.

I get to meet many people through this job and I love talking to them and hearing their stories. Some of the people are young and some not so young. From the last group the thing I hear most often is that they wish they had taken better care of their teeth. Sure there is a smattering of regret over the one that got away and the life choices made in error. But mostly it is the teeth.

I am guilty of not going to the dentist on a regular basis. I have had so many fillings and crowns that the last time I complained to my dentist about pain in a tooth he actually said, “That is not your tooth it is a crown, so I don’t think it can be hurting.” Ah. As a parent I am vigilant about the 6 month check ups and cleanings for my kids. I march my children in there telling them it is not an option and that they will thank me one day.

Meanwhile the nagging guilt that I am not following my own advice is thrumming away in the back of my mind. “I am so busy” I tell myself, or “I will make an appointment next time I take the kids.” I have an excuse for every point. But those people I spoke to are right. If I lose my teeth I cant eat chocolate.

Hold on, I have a great point there. Excuse me I have to make a phone call...

See? Where was I? Ah yes procrastination... I think the only thing I do on time is meet my deadline, producing these magazines every month. I am actually quite proud of my record for hitting my print deadlines for the last almost decade. I do have to admit that if there was not a team of people at the printer waiting for me, that would probably not be achievable.

However I do hate to disappoint others. So thank you Gene for keeping me accountable.

On Our Cover On the cover this month we have Jack and Adam Cortez. Their dad was hiking with them in the Fins and took this shot for us.

Greg, Jennifer and their family moved to Estrella 3 years ago. They had moved from Oregon to Avondale and were happy there when their eldest son started golf lessons up here in Estrella. Once they had discovered the beauty of our community they decided to move and the rest is history.

Greg is a Counselor with the AZ Department of Corrections and Jennifer is a stay at home mom to their boys.

Greg and Jennifer have three sons who attend Westar - William is in 6th grade and loves science, Jack is in 4th grade and his favorite subjects are reading and science. Adam is a second grader and loves his specials!

The family loves to hike and enjoyed their trip up the Fins to see the Christmas tree. The boys enjoy hiking, soccer and golf and Greg coaches Goodyear Little League.

Brain Drain Everyone has those days. You’re operating in a fog, or perhaps you spaced out on a family member’s name in the middle of dinner, or maybe you just find it hard to concentrate on work or hobbies.

Researchers have discovered that healthy brains need certain levels of reserves, and challenging them is one way to build those reserves.

“Think of your brain like a bank account,” Dow says.

“Every time you learn something new, or play a challenging game or read a book, it’s like depositing a dollar into that account. The more cash deposits you make, the more you have to spare.”

Like other parts of the body, the brain needs food and nutrients, and the right food can go a long way to support brain health. An antioxidant-rich diet including things like unsweetened tea, berries and turmeric can protect the brain from damage that comes from aging and oxidative stress.

As life and circumstances bring inevitable changes, the number of people we count as friends and loved ones can change over the years. It takes effort, but it’s important to try to maintain our relationships and be open to creating new ones, because they can have a profound effect on brain health.

To meet new people, try simple things like inviting a neighbor over for dessert, joining a book club or volunteering for a nonprofit or cause that’s important to you.

We often short ourselves on sleep when life gets busy, but it’s important to make it a priority, Dow says. “Think of nighttime sleep as a wash-andrinse cycle that clears away the ‘bad stuff’ that builds up during the day,” Dow says. “Brain fog and dementia-causing plaques are washed away by cerebrospinal fluid, and this process is more effective when you’re sleeping.”

Dow recommends practicing healthy sleep habits, such as striving for eight hours each night, being consistent with your bedtime routine and using melatonin to help you drift off.

Investing Advice Parents and grandparents typically pass down many things to the next generation - jewelry, furniture and other family heirlooms. But what if the best thing that the preceding generation passed along was their financial wisdom? Through years of investing and saving for retirement, Baby Boomers have experienced a lot and learned many helpful lessons along the way.

A recent survey from Capital Group, studied the dynamics for Boomer investors as they transitioned into retirement. The survey revealed what expenses cause the most sticker shock for retired Boomers, why they retire earlier or later than they planned, how they see the financial markets performing over the next 10 years, and their goals for growing their retirement nest egg to ride out the market’s ups and downs.

Boomers have learned many lessons - some good, some bad and all beneficial to future generations of investors. Here are five rules that these seasoned investors found to be essential to saving for a secure retirement.

1) Stay invested for the long term - A large majority of retired Boomers say that Americans need to save more for retirement by getting and staying invested in the market. When asked about what they would do in fluctuating markets, only three in 10 would adapt their strategies based on market conditions.

2) Keep an eye on fees - Low fees and transparency really matter to Boomers. Ninety-four percent of retired Boomers want to be able to easily understand the fees they pay, and 78 percent stressed low-cost simple investments to buy and hold for the long term.

3) Diversify your portfolio - Eighty-five percent of retired Boomers believe that building a diversified portfolio is one of the most important elements for a safe path to a better retirement.

4) Protect yourself against market downturns Eight in 10 retired Boomers stress the importance of protecting their nest egg and lowering the risk of losses during market downturns. Thirty percent of Boomers wish that they had learned sooner what to do in turbulent markets - near the top of the list of lessons learned.

Home Sweet Home In the real estate market, springtime is the busiest time of the year for home sales, and the spring of 2018 has the potential to be especially active. Every market is defined by its trends, and while each year is different, identifying these trends early on can be a useful tool for buyers, sellers and agents to navigate the upcoming market and secure the best long-term solution for themselves or their clients.

With that in mind, here are a few top real estate trends to watch for in 2018.

1. Generations on the move The shift in home buying preferences is more than just an individual choice; it’s a generational one. Two of the nation’s largest generations are suddenly competing with one another in the real estate market. Millennials have come of age, so to speak, and they’re starting to abandon their condos in the city for single-family starter homes in the suburbs to raise their families. This shift has put them in direct competition with baby boomers, who are looking to downsize to something smaller that meets the needs of their new lifestyle.

With these two groups looking for similar housing, well-maintained single-family homes are expected to go very quickly in 2018.

The presidential election in November 2016 and local elections from this past fall both have implications on housing policy. Adjustments to tax rates, the growth or decline of suburban options and zoning ordinance changes may all impact the markets where consumers are shopping.

Like most other industries, real estate today is profoundly affected by the advent of technology.

Homebuyers and sellers can go online or use apps to access information about a house or the market like never before, and virtual walk-throughs allow a buyer to enter a prospective home for the first time with few surprises. For buyers and sellers, technology has the potential to reward those who do their homework and make the most of digital options before deciding how to use their precious time.

The 2018 market will be dictated largely by what takes place in the spring, and the trends above figure to play a prominent role in most home sales and listings across the country.

2. Inventory is tightening While the spring will be flush with buyers, it remains to be seen if sellers will follow suit. The fall of 2017 proved to be sluggish in regard to the number of homes available for sale; in fact, total housing inventory was down 13.4 percent in October 2017 compared to the same time the year before.

Will that change in the spring? It may, but buyers should be prepared for a market where they will have to be aggressive to purchase the home they want.

Traditions The more things change the more things stay the same. A phrase used thousands of times since it was coined in the 1800s. This was followed by its more modern variation used by adults of many generations, “What’s wrong with kids these days?”

I’m sure there were a few adults who wondered what might be wrong with me during my teenage years. I listened to eee-vil heavy metal music, played that eee-vil Dungeons & Dragons game, and stayed out until the sun came up doing something eee-vil, I’m sure. I added “evil” as a description because many thought some types of music, games, and other pop culture fads were bad. Was my behavior wrong or was I normal for the time?

Normal is a relative term. A long time ago, men wore white, powdered wigs. That was normal. Sixty years ago, gentlemen wore hats and always tipped their hat to a lady. That was normal. Today, people sit together manipulating their smartphones instead of talking to each other. That seems…normal? Some believe it is while others think it’s wrong. I think it’s weird, but not eee-vil.

Another question to ask: Is it considered normal or traditional? Normal could change as society does, but everyone wants a normal body temperature. Traditional

implies steadfastness. Something passed between generations, even though some traditions have disappeared, such as families gathered around the radio to listen to shows. So, would be it considered normal or tradition when someone shouts, “Hey! Watch this!” before doing something incredibly unwise?

In my daily routine, I often have to decide whether or not to change something that many consider normal or traditional. Sometimes normal and traditional will need to change with the times.

Sometimes it’s something that has become obsolete. The floppy disc is now the icon for saving a computer file. Fax machines are still around and used. Breaking a tradition or changing a norm is done with the intention of making an improvement.

My new hair cut changed my appearance. Was it an improvement? I hope so. Otherwise, I might opt for a powdered wig.

We just finished the holiday season. Did you stay traditional or change things up? All that matters is that you enjoyed the holiday season. I will stay traditional by wishing you a wonderful New Year!

The Bug Guy With a new year upon us and last year in the past, we are all looking towards what the next year will bring.

As individuals, and as a group, we have the power to continue to change our community for the better and there is no time like the present to make positive changes. Here are some ways we all can make a positive difference in our community this year.

Be Positive. Stay Positive.

What we contribute is every bit as important as what we say and how we act. The way we interact inside our community affects our contributions and our attitude. The way we welcome new people into our community and encourage participation will impact their involvement and contributions. Everything makes a difference and we should resolve to make it a positive difference.

Deal with Conflicts Appropriately We want to stay positive but it’s not realistic to believe everyone will agree on everything all the time. We need to speak our minds, but it should be done so appropriately. Some conversations are appropriate on public platforms, some are not particularly those that involve personal differences or heated emotions. How we handle our differences and resolve conflicts has a significant impact on our community. Consider the following questions: Is my message helpful to our community?

Is this a personal message or an issue that should be discussed in private?

If someone outside our community reads this now,

or a year from now, what will they think?

A little bit of thought can go a long way. We can make a positive difference in our community by resolving to be mindful of how we communicate.

Set the Example How we act within our community sets a standard that others will follow. If we set a positive example and do the right things as members we will have a positive impact on the community. Be the change you want to see in our community and others will follow your example. Here are some simple ways to set a positive example: Always: Be nice Be helpful Contribute selflessly Speak from the heart Remember: We all live here Not everyone will always agree with you Your answers might not work for everyone A community does what is best for the community, not individuals Your contributions always matter Have a very happy new year. Senior Guests Whether it’s for a special occasion or just because, hosting an older adult in your home can be a wonderful experience with lots of memory-making potential.

However, for a safe and successful visit, you may want to make a few adjustments to your home before they arrive to make it more senior-friendly.

“Spending time with aging parents or grandparents is a wonderful experience for all generations,” says Sara Terry, Brookdale Senior Living’s senior vice president.

“Creating a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere is the job of any good host and that is no different when entertaining seniors. Considering older adults’ varying mobility and comfort levels, there are a few adjustments you can make to your home to meet their needs.”

Whether your guest is staying short- or long-term, Terry offers these tips to help you transform your home into a more senior-friendly environment so you can focus on what matters most: making memories with your entire family.

The easiest thing you can do is remove clutter to allow sufficient space for senior guests who may be in a wheelchair to maneuver around rooms. Remove or tape down all cords. Rugs may look nice but they are

a leading tripping hazard. Remove all accent rugs from your home, and in areas like the entryway where you must have mats, make sure they are secured with nonslip material.

Seniors need more light than you do in your home, particularly in notoriously dim areas such as entryways, hallways and staircases. Replace existing soft light bulbs with brighter or higher wattage ones and add motion-sensor lights to bathrooms. Adding night lights throughout your home is an easy addition that helps seniors see better, especially at night or on darker winter days.

Ideally, a senior won’t have to navigate stairs, but if you have some in your home, you can make the space safer by having railings on both sides. What’s more, help each stair be more visible by using contrast strips.

Make bathrooms safer by adding well-placed grab bars next to the toilet and in bathing spaces. In the shower or tub, add non-slip strips and a shower seat for comfort and ease of use. Finally, set the hot water heater temperature to 120 degrees as to avoid unintended burns.

Whether your loved one is staying one night, one month or more, selecting the right room will increase their comfort and safety. One-level living is key, so if possible use a room on the main floor with easy access to the bathroom, kitchen and living room. Furniture, including the bed and chairs, should be at a good height (neither too low nor too high) to be easily used.

Knobs can be difficult, so consider replacing round door handles with lever handles.

“In addition to these tips, I recommend having a conversation with your loved one before their stay,” says Terry. “Talk to them about what will make them feel at home in your home. What’s most important is enjoying your visit to the fullest and spending valuable time together.”

Yum Yum While most families say eating together is a high priority, day-to-day reality is different. According to a 2013 poll by NPR and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, only half of children in the U.S. are in families that dine together. Yet research cited by the American Academy of Pediatrics shows that children reap many benefits from regular family meals, from improved academic performance to developing a deeper sense of resilience.

But busy families can find time to sit down together more often, says Colleen Burns, a lifestyle expert and spokeswoman for Nestle. To be successful, set the intention with good planning and smart strategies.

Shop the freezer section: When you’re in a time pinch, frozen foods have many offerings that set a good foundation for any home-cooked meal, Burns says.

Oftentimes, the quality is just as good as their fresh counterparts, and they eliminate many steps of prep time, whether you’re looking at entrees, veggies or sides.

Don’t sacrifice: If you know what to look for when shopping the grocery aisles, you can find convenient entrees and sides without sacrificing taste or quality.

Maintain balance: Look to a variety of entrees and sides to bring a nutritional balance as well as delicious flavors to your dinner menu. Burns recommends opting for lean proteins like fish and chicken served with fresh or frozen veggies.

Marinated Garlic and Lemon Roasted Chicken Drumsticks with Honey Mustard Sauce 10 chicken drumsticks 1 large lemon zested and juiced 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 3 whole cloves garlic, chopped 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon oregano 1 pinch each salt and pepper Minced parsley for garnish Honey Mustard Sauce: 3 tablespoons melted butter 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup mustard 1 tablespoon lemon juice Directions In a bowl, mix together lemon juice, zest, olive oil, chopped garlic, paprika, oregano, salt and pepper. Add chicken drumsticks and toss to coat evenly. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and place in refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. When ready to cook, let chicken come to room temperature for about 20 minutes. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Arrange chicken on oiled foil-lined sheet pan. Bake uncovered for 20 minutes. Flip chicken pieces and cook another 10 minutes until chicken reaches 165 degrees and is no longer pink. Make sauce in a small bowl by whisking together the mustard and honey. Add water as needed for a workable consistency. With a small pastry brush, brush sauce over chicken and broil 5 minutes until bubbly. Place chicken pieces on a serving platter and sprinkle minced parsley over all.

Scientists say our brains are zapped with an instant mood boost when we smile, and that boost is reinforced when others smile back.

Further, whiter teeth can have a direct effect on our social and professional interactions, and they’re now easy to achieve through consumer brands like Rembrandt’s 1 Week Whitening Kit that can achieve professional-level results at home within a week.

* Let your body language communicate selfrespect. Keeping your shoulders pulled back and your body straight and tall communicates confidence to your brain, studies show.

Research found the most empowering stance is one in which your arms are held slightly away from your torso, your body is open and your head is up. * Optimize color in your clothing. The right shade may light up your entire face and have a surprising impact on your mood. “Choosing the color of your office, your clothes or your desktop should not be taken lightly colors do affect our moods and productivity,” states a recent article on Scienceofpeople.com. “When given the choice, picking a color that will work with you and not against you can only help.” * Wear scent strategically. Because our brains link certain smells to positive experiences, research suggests we may be able to ramp up our confidence with scents that remind us of happy times. Bottom line: When you’re taking care of yourself and projecting your best self, you’re far more likely to project the confidence you need to deal effectively with life.

“Confidence can make or break a lot of things,” advises Lecia Bushak on Medicaldaily.com. “In our extrovert-centric society, confidence can get you a job, a girlfriend, and the courage to say no to people or situations that are toxic to you. Confidence is knowing yourself and taking care of yourself, too.”

Money Matters We’ve reached the end of another year – which means it’s just about time for some New Year’s resolutions. Would you like to study a new language, take up a musical instrument or visit the gym more often? Why not also add some financial resolutions?

Here are some ideas to think about: • Increase contributions to your employersponsored retirement plan. For 2018, you can contribute up to $18,500 (or $24,500 if you’re 50 or older) to your 401(k) or similar plan. It’s usually a good idea to contribute as much as you can afford to your employer’s plan, as your contributions may lower your taxable income, while your earnings can grow tax-deferred. At a minimum, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution.

• Try to “max out” on your IRA. Even if you have a 401(k) or similar plan, you can probably still invest in an IRA. For 2018, you can contribute up to $5,500 to a traditional or Roth IRA, or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older. Contributions to a traditional IRA may be tax-deductible, depending on your income, and your earnings can grow tax-deferred. Data Mining Do you think you could live without your mobile phone? What about the navigation and backup camera in your car? Our obsession with technology and the information it delivers daily has progressed beyond the point of external mobile phones and smartwatches to implanted heart monitors and Fitbits. At one time, consumers were too paranoid to enter their Social Security or credit card number online, but now, they are willing to implant sensors and other wearable technologies into their bodies. In turn, companies are leveraging these devices to collect as much data about their potential customers as possible.

Think about it: You’re carrying (and generating) large amounts of data everywhere you go with wearable and implanted technologies. This means 24/7 data collection for the companies that manufacture those devices, which in turn helps them create a 360-degree view of the patients, athletes or customers they serve with the appropriate products, services and marketing campaigns.

Healthcare is the leading use for implanted technologies, with the introduction of tracking devices such as an insertable Cardiac Monitor, which is designed to accurately identify abnormal heartbeats.

This device is implanted just beneath the skin and once the data is loaded, algorithms can be run to determine if the patient is experiencing slower than average heart rate, which can deprive the brain and other organs from getting enough oxygen.

Auto Zone For many Americans, fixing a flat remains a mystery.

According to a survey from AAA, nearly 20 percent of U.S. drivers don’t know how to change a flat tire.

This is compounded by research saying there are 220 million flat tires annually - and each driver will experience up to five flat tires in their lifetime.

Before hitting the road, study up on these flat-tirefixing hacks and build up the confidence to complete this all-American road test: Be spared: Knowing how to change a flat is all for naught if a spare tire is not along for the ride. Spares are usually hidden under the carpet in the trunk area, but they aren’t always included in newer vehicles (allowing manufacturers to make lighter, more fuelefficient vehicles). When purchasing a new vehicle, ask the dealer about the inclusion of a spare.

On the road again: With the flat tire off, line up the spare tire’s holes with the wheel bolts and push on, hand-screwing the lug nuts back on. In an age of mobile phones and easy connection to roadside assistance, the knowledge of addressing a flat tire has gone out the window - or the sunroof. But, motorists should know - and practice - the basics of changing a flat to ensure they are prepared for the dreaded pop.

Flatlining signs: It’s fairly easy to spot a flat tire it’s usually accompanied by a loud noise or rubber flapping. The vehicle will feel like it is being pulled toward the side of the flat tire, and it will feel as if the vehicle can no longer accelerate. When in doubt, activate hazard lights and move the vehicle safely out of traffic, ideally on a flat area with enough space on the side of the road. Once in a safe spot, remember to practice high visibility: Wear a reflective vest and position reflective emergency warning triangles to alert motorists - both of these items should be added to your roadside toolkit.

Hit the road, Jack: Having the right tools on board is critical, of course, and that’s where a jack comes in.

Remember, the jack is only used to get the vehicle off the ground, not to hold the vehicle in place - that’s where the jack stands come in to ensure a safe and sustained lift. Refer to the owner’s manual for the proper placement of the jack and the stands, which is typically the sturdiest part of the vehicle.

Rider’s block: A common, and dangerous, error when changing a tire is not using blocks to prevent the wheels from rolling once the vehicle is raised. A tire-changing tool pack should include bricks or wooden wedges to be placed behind the wheels at the end of the vehicle that isn’t being raised.

Get loose: Once the jack has been cranked up, and the wheel is slightly off the ground, it’s time to remove the hubcap and then call for another

Living With Faith It was approximately twenty-five hundred years ago that a Prophet of Israel roamed the countryside preaching about the goodness of humanity and how it could be found in each of us. In fact he emphasized that the most enduring force known to man was the power of our ability to conquer the wrong doing we witness every day.

There are many ways we can accomplish what was suggested so long ago. For example: Supporting institutions that give others the ability to survive and even carry themselves with dignity. Every day we witness the poverty and misery of those less fortunate. And there are those among us who were more independent but somehow woke one day to the progress of time.

It is not enough to acknowledge the problems. We are obligated, as partners with God, to ensure that the tear in our society is repaired to the best of our ability. Each tear in the fabric of our existence should bring us closer to understanding our place in the journey we are embarked upon. Age should not be a deterrent to reaching out to lend a helping hand. Rather it should encourage us to do more because we have been there and have seen the results of indifference. We are nothing without purpose and only when we lift a person who has fallen, can we with pride, declare who we are and truly comprehend the connection of Heaven and Earth.

This time of the year enables us to recollect as well as plan for tomorrow. There is the custom of New Year’s resolutions – a wish list of things yet to be

accomplished and with good intentions attached.

But it shouldn’t end there. The act of making a wish should be connected to the action necessary to see them completed. Some will falter and some will see their dreams come true. There is no shame in failing but rather in not making an honest attempt.

That is the beauty of trying and our responsibility as God’s children.

God does not expect us to succeed in everything we undertake, but is disappointed when we do not attempt to improve our lives. The special ingredient in any attempt at connection with God and receiving the salvation we all so desperately need is a thing called forgiveness. Forgiveness gives us the ability to heal from wounds that have been inflicted. More importantly, forgiveness is a sign of positive selfesteem.

All these things are why a special time is set aside and designated for new beginnings.

We forgive, but never forget. For it is through forgiving that we remain a blessing and it is remembering that should help us refrain from repeating our mistakes.

May all of our New Year’s be fulfilling, and rewarding.

Life As A Caregiver Imagine if you yourself had a disease or condition that was terminal for which there was no cure.

And…you were of the age that hindered you from understanding or remembering what it was that was wrong with you. That is often the scenario for an Alzheimer’s patient.

In my mother’s case, which is not unlike many, she has other issues. Hers is chronic head pain. The head pain is what keeps her in bed most of the day and robs her of a busy and happy life. And it’s the head pain that causes her be to depressed.

Everyone gets depressed from time to time. But as it applied to me, there had always been something or someone to snap me out of it. But when a person suffers from Alzheimer’s or any other terminal disease, there isn’t much that can make them snap out of it. I have found that living ‘in the moment’ is what is important. The only thing Alzheimer’s patients HAVE is ‘in the moment’. So….it is important to find the things that make them happy in that moment. Right now. This very minute.

Instant gratification. Some of the things that have worked for us are as follows: ~ Ice cream. Mom loves ice cream, so as an after dinner treat, I will give her some ice cream once in a while. The smile on her face says it all. She won’t remember she had it ten minutes later, but for that moment she is happy and enjoying every mouthful. ~ Music. Frequently I will play music on

the cable music channel and she sings or hums right along. It’s always amazing to me that with music, it is an instant recall. ~ Fast-moving sports on tv (like the Olympics, football, basketball….even baseball). She enjoys watching her favorites and can follow along since the games move quickly. ~ Wheel of Fortune. She enjoys trying to guess the puzzles…and is still pretty good at it. ~ Looking at old family photos and her high school yearbooks. They bring smiles to her face.

Once you have established a few things that they can still enjoy, you can make them part of your routine. My mom won’t truly remember eating the ice cream or listening to the music or watching the games or playing Wheel of Fortune or looking at the photos….but she knows what they are and knows they make her happy. Which in turn, makes ME happy. For the moment.

But what about MY depression? The caregiver is often left with depression of a different sort. We KNOW what is happening to our loved one. And we KNOW that we can’t fix it. We continue to work hard to keep them comfortable and as happy as possible.

But when the lights go out at night and we’re alone with our thoughts, we KNOW what is coming. We just don’t know WHEN. What about THAT kind of depression?

For me, I try and face reality. I try and tell myself that I am doing the best I can with the resources I have. And I tell myself that my mom knows I am taking good care of her. That does give me a bit of comfort. But I also find that I need to focus on ME, as well. The best way for me to do that has been to surround myself with people I can talk with. They are friends who simply care about me and let me share my thoughts. I try and stay active with projects and people that make me happy, I work-out to keep my mind and body healthy and to relieve stress, and I have come to enjoy the quiet.

Taking the time to prepare my thoughts for what is coming.

Depression is a horrible thing. But, if we’re smart about it and do what we can to keep it at bay, we can move forward in spite of it. That is my goal for both my mom AND myself.
