So, we packed up and left rainy Portland Oregon in the rear-view mirror and came down to Estrella full time.

From Me To You...

“He’s making a list and checking it twice...”

‘Tis the season for lists. Lists of gifts to buy and dishes to make, lists of holiday cards to send out, lists upon lists upon lists. Usually lists are helpful for me. They allow my mind to concentrate on whatever task is at hand without worrying about remembering the next task. In my work I make tons of lists! I have lists of ads to update, articles to write or proof, people to email, and then there is the Master List. I have a giant white board behind me in my office to keep me on track each month. It is mostly there as a checklist to make sure nothing gets missed in one of the magazines. But without that master list there would be things missing from one or more magazine that should have been there.

Then there are my mental lists of things I would like to do, things like movies I want to watch and books I want to read. I started to buy books theorizing that if I had them in front of me I would remember to read them. What actually happened is that I have a stack of books by my bed waiting to be read. The guilt is enormous.

The movie list is just a mental checklist. I see a preview and think, “Oh I would like to watch that when it comes out!” Of course by the time the movie is available I have completely forgotten about it.

I was scrolling through Netflix or Hulu, or one of the other online streaming services a couple of

days ago and I came upon the movie The Meg. This movie is an update of the Jaws movies with a giant shark that terrorizes the locals. There is the ubiquitous beach full of tourists to churn through and the boat with well intentioned researchers to upend and eat. My favorite part was when they had finally caught and killed the monster after a terrifying chase scene. They were basking in that post victory glow and one of the scientists noticed that the bite of this shark did not seem to be big enough for the prints it had left on their underwater research facility. Dum dum duuuum!!!! A new and even bigger shark leapt over their boat, eating several people and a chunk of the dead shark. Classic.

As much as I enjoyed the movie I have to admit it was truly terrible. Just awful. From the acting, to the plot, to the enhanced computer graphics.

Nothing was ever going to be award winning.

And yet I enjoyed the heck out of it. Partly because I love kitschy movies like that but mostly because it meant I could check it off my movie list. Finally I can get to the next thing on my list.

What is that you ask? Well I am going to pop some popcorn and cozy up with another wild ride, The Crown. Sure it may not have as much blood but it is just as vicious in its own way.

Help Local Seniors Did you know that by 2040, 20% of Americans will be 65 and older? As the population of older adults increases, it’s crucial to recognize and celebrate the rich depth of experience, talents and unique perspectives of such a large segment of the country. Yet, all too often, older people are overlooked and undervalued.

How to connect with seniors in your community 1. Call every week Make it a regular habit to call your older friend, neighbor or family member each week, so they have a friendly conversation to look forward to.

5. Be their tech support To communicate with the outside world, older people may have to rely on smartphones, computers or tablets that can sometimes be complicated or confusing to use. Teach them how to use apps like Zoom, set up a charging station for their phone or tablet, reboot devices so they run better - or just ask if they’re having any problems accessing their email or using their phone.

2. Offer to pick something up Offering to get some groceries or a prescription for an older person can make their lives a lot easier. 3. Help them stay safe Make sure any vulnerable person you know has face masks, hand sanitizer and the ability to order or ask for what they need. Mask up and offer to help them sanitize their doorknobs and phone after you drop by with a delivery. Help them use video conferencing to communicate with family members or friends.

4. Find ways to keep them engaged Drop by with a care package containing things they might like to do: a jigsaw puzzle, or crosswords. If you’re a good cook or have a green thumb, bring them a sample of your latest dish, offer to help with yard work, or bring them a plant that’s easy to care for - that gives you a reason to stop by to check on them next time.

The Benefit Of Plants Flowers and plants are staples in many American homes, adding to the style and aesthetic of virtually any space. While the visual benefits of plants are widely embraced, many people are unaware of the ways plants can support mental and physical well-being, too.

Greenery has the innate ability to calm and reduce stress. The sights and smells promote calm and a feeling of escape, which is particularly important during times of stress.

Because many people are now working from home and children are attending school remotely, add plants to office and study spaces to reduce stress and make the space more welcoming. Plants suitable for a home office should be easy to maintain, and will not take over the space. For example, a hanging plant that won’t use up valuable desk space can add a welcome touch of green.

Plants can improve air quality by decreasing the levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air by up to 89%, according to a report by the NASA Stennis Space Center. VOCs are commonly found in household items and paints, and include formaldehyde, benzene and trichlorethylene, among others.

The Bug Guy

When the cold weather rolls in, bears go into hibernation, birds migrate south and we layer up and relax by the fire to stay warm throughout the winter months. But, what happens to pests?

Many people assume they just die off, but the truth is that these and other insects often devise strategies to make it through the winter.

Ants : Ants are highly successful at overwintering in the great outdoors, including our own yards.

During the fall months, they indulge in vast amounts of food with the goal of putting on fat to survive for weeks on end without eating. As the winter chill arrives, their body temperature significantly decreases, so they seal up their colony and hunker down in deep soil or under rocks until spring has sprung. Once the temperature rises, ants will emerge from their overwintering sites, full of energy and ready to crash the next backyard barbecue.

Cockroaches: Cockroaches have been around for millions of years, evolving into some of the most adaptable creatures in the world. But, are they able to survive the cold weather? Most

types of cockroaches can survive year-round, as long as they have easy access to a warm, moist environment. The American cockroach, will live outdoors in warmer climates. Once the temperature dips, this type of cockroach will mass migrate into homes or larger commercial buildings such as restaurants, grocery stores, food processing plants and hospitals.

Mosquitoes: Encountering mosquitoes is inevitable when spending time outdoors during the summer months. But, you might be surprised to find out that mosquitoes don’t fall away when Old Man Winter moves in. These biting insects hibernate in protected places like hollow logs.

As the weather conditions improve, female mosquitoes awaken and seek out a blood source to feed and begin developing eggs.

Termites: In our climate, subterranean termites will tunnel at a shallow depth into the soil, typically in the winter when the temperature are mild, young male and female termite swarmers emerge from their nests to find a mate and new nest location, which oftentimes can be inside our homes.

Instructions

Prosciutto-Wrapped Shrimp with Smoked Paprika These are lavish-looking appetizers suitable for any party or get-together with your family.

Preheat broiler and place cooking rack about 4 inches below heat source.

Spray rimmed baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray, or line with parchment paper.

In a small bowl, combine olive oil, paprika, and pepper. Add shrimp and toss until coated with the seasoned olive oil.

Prep time 15 minutes; Cook time 6 minutes; Total time 21 minutes

Wrap each shrimp with a strip of prosciutto, spiraling it up the shrimp until the shrimp is encased. Place shrimp on the prepared baking sheet.

Ingredients 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 1 and 1/2 teaspoons smoked paprika 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 pound jumbo shrimp (16/20 pound), shelled and deveined with tails left on 4 ounces very thinly sliced prosciutto sliced lengthwise into 1/2-inch strips

Broil for 3 minutes until the tops are crispy, then turn and broil for another 3 minutes until the other side is browned.

Serve with little napkins, with the crispier side up.

Serves 6.

Quarantine Fatigue?

You love spending time at home with your kids, but you might not have anticipated just how much time this would be at the start of the pandemic. Now that cold weather is sweeping the nation, families will be at home and indoors even more. Fortunately, the magic of imaginative play not only keeps kids busy, but it helps them develop critical skills that will serve them well throughout life.

Creative play nurtures budding imaginations and helps young brains develop in healthy, ageappropriate ways. As kids spend more time at home and away from preschools, classes and playdates, this is even more critical to fill in for lost learning opportunities. To inspire creative and dramatic play in your home any time of year, consider these fun ideas: 1. Encourage your child’s sense of dramatic play by keeping a dedicated bin stocked with dress-up clothing. Fill it with old clothes, unused accessories, and former Halloween costumes and other fantasy wear. You’ll be amazed by their transformations and what new and inventive ways they use the items. Ask open-ended questions such as, “Where do you live?” and “How do you feel?” to reinforce your child’s creative spirit. You might even capture some pretty awesome pictures and videos to document this unique year.

3. Upcycle and craft cardboard creations Many families are getting more deliveries right to their home and with that comes plentiful cardboard boxes. Recycling is always a great idea, but before you do so, consider upcycling opportunities for your kids. With some basic crafting supplies and a touch of imagination, a large cardboard box can be transformed into a treehouse, restaurant, island hut and more.

Acts Of Giving “Once when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus.

Finally, there was only one other family between us and the ticket counter. This family made a big impression on me.

There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12.

The way they were dressed, you could tell they didn’t have a lot of money, but their clothes were neat and clean.

The children were wellbehaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly jabbering about the clowns, animals, and all the acts they would be seeing that night. By their excitement you could sense they had never been to the circus before. It would be a highlight of their lives.

The father and mother were at the head of the pack standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You’re my knight in shining armor.” He was smiling and enjoying seeing his family happy.

The ticket lady asked the man how many tickets he wanted? He proudly responded, “I’d like to buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets, so I can take my family to the circus.”

The ticket lady stated the price.

The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, the man’s lip began to quiver. Then he leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?” The ticket lady again stated the price.

The man didn’t have enough money. How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight kids that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus?

Seeing what was going on, my dad reached into his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill, and then dropped it on the ground. (We were not wealthy in any sense of the word!) My father bent down, picked up the $20 bill, tapped the man on the shoulder and said, “Excuse me, sir, this fell out of your pocket.”

The man understood what was going on. He wasn’t begging for a handout but certainly appreciated the help in a desperate, heartbreaking and embarrassing situation.

He looked straight into my dad’s eyes, took my dad’s hand in both of his, squeezed tightly onto the $20 bill, and with his lip quivering and a tear streaming down his cheek, he replied; “Thank you, thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.”

My father and I went back to our car and drove home. The $20 that my dad gave away is what we were going to buy our own tickets with.

Although we didn’t get to see the circus that night, we both felt a joy inside us that was far greater than seeing the circus could ever provide.

That day I learnt the value to Give.
