From Me To You... All my childhood I had long hair. Very long hair. I would sit on the ends by mistake sometimes and jerk my head backwards. Not fun. To this day I don’t know why I kept it like that. It was not required in my family and it certainly made my life more complicated. Perhaps it was because I did so much ballet, I had to tie it up anyway, might as well have a big bun as a little one. Anyway there was a day in my late teens when I decided enough was enough and I went to get it cut. All of it. Buzzed up the back and short on top. After that came about 5 years of dramatic hair styles. Whether it was buzzed on one side and chin length on the other, or varying shades of blue and purple - I made a statement with my head. That was also the time when I became somewhat reckless in life too, living in places that as a parent I shudder at ( I am not talking back alleys, more like war zones), and taking risks just to push the boundaries. To see how far I could go and survive. This is not an uncommon thing in a teenager, taking risks, testing ourselves and our place in the world. I admittedly went to some extremes and as an adult I am amazed that I am still here. But I think we all went through some measure of this in our lives.

childhood. One with less stress and expectation, away from the Joneses whom I would never be able to keep up with. My children were not enrolled in Mandarin at age 3, I would rather they played with their toys and friends - well the ones who were not taking so many classes that they had time to play. We also hoped that by taking them away from many temptations and the easy access to those temptations, that we could protect them from themselves when those teenage years struck. And to a certain extent we did. I am sure they could get illegal substances if they tried but to my knowledge they did not. One of my children certainly followed in my footsteps, travelling to the northern border of India to help displaced children. The fact that she was based only 150 miles from the border of Afghanistan made those 3 weeks the longest of my life. It did give me a new found understanding of what I put my parents through, and a strong belief in karma. I can’t wait until my children’s children pass that blessing along to them.

The Amish have a well documented time called Rumspringa when their teenagers are allowed to go out into the world and be as crazy as they like. Getting experience in all the worldly things that they turn away from in their home life. I used to think it was bizarre that a society so regimented would encourage a ‘get out of jail free’ experience, but I understand it better now. If the young adults can see what is out there it is no longer forbidden fruit, it is something they can knowledgably decide to leave behind. As parents my husband and I decided to move here partly to give our children more of a ‘normal’ Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

On Our Cover

The athletic residents on our cover this month are members of the Canta Mia Pickleball Club. For those of you who have not heard of Pickleball it is a game played on a slightly smaller court than tennis, with hard paddles and a plastic wiffletype ball. Originally invented in the 1960s it is a combination of Badminton, Tennis and Table Tennis. The Canta Mia club was started over 4 years ago by Bill Schlimgen when there were only 2 courts to play on. Now with over 120 paid members and many more, newly resurfaced courts, the club is booming! There are games 7 days a week and member led games 5 nights a week. The members are all levels from beginner to expert and anyone who is a Canta Mia resident is encouraged to get out and play. All players are self ranked (the rating sheet is available on the USAPA website www. usappa.org) and once you have ranked your play the Rating Committee will check to make sure you are where you can play your best.

Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

There are many committees in the club ranging from the Board of Directors - responsible for running the club, to the Social Committee - who plan the many activities enjoyed by members and their spouses. Some of the activities include the Poker Run (similar to Amazing Race), Pizza Parties, the Annual Championship Tournament & Dinner, and the Skills, Drills & Leisure Play event. There is also a Competition Committee which is responsible for coming up with the club competitions and a Training Development Committee that helps new players improve their game. What I came away with after talking to the club members is that it is such a fun game. If you live in Canta Mia and have not tried it yet, you really should! Holiday Safety At the risk of sounding like a Grinch holiday festivity can lead to unintentional safety hazards. 30 percent of all home fires and 38 percent of home fire deaths occur over December, January and February, reports the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI). As you enjoy the holidays this year, think about best practices for keeping you and your family safer. 1. Lying down for a long winter’s nap? Stash appliances elsewhere to rule out overheating. A hot phone under a sack of feathers could spell disaster. 2. Install tamper-resistant receptacles. These electric outlets feature internal shutters that keep curious children from inserting objects. 3. Space heaters come in handy for banishing winter chill, but they can overheat, spark, tip over and/or ignite combustibles such as wadded-up giftwrap. Turn them off when you leave the room or go to sleep. 4. Get that holiday glow. Instead of the open-

6 Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

flame candles that inadvertently spark holiday decor each year, consider batteryoperated candles.

5. Multi-outlet power strips and extension cords are handy plugging in too many things can over-tax your home’s electrical capacity. Never use an extension cord or power strip for heaters, as this could cause cords to overheat and result in a fire. 6. Decorate wisely. Consider fire hazards before draping that garland over a fireplace mantle. Check decorations for safety listing labels and never connect more than three strings of lights. 7. Give lit decorations a holiday break. Reduce the likelihood of fire by simply shutting everything off when there’s no one home (or awake) to enjoy them. Half of home fire deaths occur between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., reports the NFPA. 8. More Christmas tree, more water. If you put up a real tree, make sure you water it daily. A driedup pine tree is nothing but kindling. The Electrical Safety Foundation International wishes everyone a safe, warm and happy holiday.

Money Matters What’s Smarter – Paying Off Debts or Investing? It probably doesn’t happen as much as you’d like, but you may occasionally have some extra disposable income. For example, perhaps you have recently received, or will soon receive, a year-end bonus. Or maybe you will get a sizable tax refund in just a few months. Wherever this money comes from, you will want to put it to good use. Should you use the cash to pay down debts or should you invest it instead? There’s no simple answer, and everyone’s situation is different, but here are a few suggestions for helping you make a good choice:

Evaluate your cash flow. If you already have enough cash to meet your daily living expenses, you might lean toward investing the money, but if you are just getting by, possibly due to heavy debt payments, then you might be better off using your newfound funds to reduce your debt load. Another way of possibly reducing your debt load is to build an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account. Once you have such a fund, you could use it, instead of going into debt, to pay for unexpected costs, such as a new furnace or a major car repair.

have heard that one season or another is a “better” time to invest – but there’s really no strong evidence to support this claim. However, now that we are nearing the end of the calendar year, and only a few months away from the tax-filing deadline on April 15, you may want to take advantage of at least one time-related investment opportunity. Specifically, you could use whatever extra money you have to fully fund your IRA, if you haven’t done so already. For the 2018 tax year, you can contribute $5,500 to a traditional or Roth IRA, or $6,500 if you are 50 or older. (Depending on your income, you may not be able to contribute the full amount to a Roth IRA.) You’ve got until the April 15 deadline to fully fund your IRA, but if you have the money sooner, why wait? The quicker it’s in your account, the faster it can go to work for you. Your year-end bonus, tax refund or other source of beyond-the-paycheck money can help you make progress toward your financial goals – so evaluate your situation and options carefully before making any moves. It will be time well spent. Submitted by Chris Carlton of Edward Jones

This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

Evaluate your debts. Some of your debts are actually more “expensive” to you than others. This expense level doesn’t necessarily refer to the size of the debt, however. You might have a large mortgage, for instance, but because your interest payments are typically tax deductible, your “after-tax” interest rate may be relatively modest. Therefore, you might consider using your excess cash for investments, rather than paying down your mortgage. But if you have consumer loans or credit cards that carry a high interest rate and whose interest payments are not deductible, you might be better off paying down this debt. Evaluate your investment opportunities. You may Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

Foster Care

Arizonans for Children was established in 2002 and began by offering families with children in foster care a warm, inviting place to have visits. Our organization has two Visitation Centers that offer fun, vibrant, educational, supervised and safe environments for children in foster care to spend time with their parents and siblings as the family works towards reunification. This allows for the family to heal and bond. Shortly after Arizonans for Children was establish, we began our mentor program which matches volunteers with foster children in the community to provide them with a role model and friend. Mentors build a one-on-one bond with foster children by helping them with homework, playing sports, going fishing, teaching interview skills, volunteering together, attending events, and much more! Arizonans for Children mentors commit to a minimum one-year relationship with a school aged foster child (ages 5-18) in Maricopa County. By simply donating their time, volunteers can help shape a child’s feelings of trust, acceptance and hope. Arizonans for Children hosts several major events each year for kids in foster care. These events allow the kids a time to just be kids! We have an Annual Holiday Party in December, a Train Park Picnic in January, a Foster Festival/ Resource Fair in February and many more throughout the year. Our organization also hosts Life Skills classes, activities and workshops to help children aging out of the foster care system. We have a STEM computer programming class, Cooking Classes, Financial Literacy workshops and Trauma and Betrayal programs. Twice a year we hold Resource Fairs for these kids where we bring a variety of resources that help teach the children skills such as: where to secure housing, who hires entry level positions at a livable wage, how to open a bank account, and many more. 10 Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

Arizonans for Children is a small non-profit with a big impact. Fully staffed there are 7 of us. We could not do what we do for these vulnerable children without the support of our community and volunteers. These children are the future of our community; together we can make sure they go from statistic to a success. Arizonans for Children is not state or federally funded and 100% of your donations go directly towards children’s programs. Did you know Arizonans for Children is a qualifying agency for the Arizona Foster Care Tax Credit? $1000 for filing jointly and $500 for filing single. You decide where your tax dollars go. The Bug Guy Here we are in December looking at 2019. What are we going to accomplish? What are we going to do to contribute to our community? What can we do to just make it a better place overall? This isn’t about a cause, this is about the little things we can do, like helping an elderly neighbor load their groceries in their car at the grocery store or putting your neighbor’s garbage and recycle cans away for them. Big grand gestures don’t affect people the same as small ones do. We can join a group like EstrellaPride a Face Book group here in Estrella that gets together and picks up trash to help keep our community looking good, they have picked up over a thousand pounds of trash, wow! There are many ways we all can get involved, so let’s do it.

With our low temps Rodents of all kinds are much more active and, in some cases, looking for a warmer environment, like your garage or shed. Take a walk around your shed or outdoor storage and make sure the door is tight and if your shed has vents that they are adequately secured. Inspect your garage door seal for areas that a rodent may have chewed through to Gain access. Ants like to penetrate structures looking for food, generally in the kitchen or bathroom areas. Its important to caulk and seal plumbing penetrations to restrict access. Termite season! Wow it never slowed down this year and now we are back into the high season again. Its important to catch this issue early. You can inspect your foundation for termite activity, just look for shelter tubes attached to the foundation of your house, or call a professional for a free inspection. Submitted by Larry Cash, of Estrella Mountain Pest Control

Winter pests, rodents, ants, termites, and flies! There are a lot more than just these, but these ones are the most common.

Holiday Shopping Whether you absolutely love shopping for gifts over the holidays or see it as a major source of stress, most people ultimately find gift giving rewarding.

It’s true that 51 percent of consumers worldwide get stressed over holiday shopping crowds and 49 percent feel frazzled deciding which gifts to buy, as informed by a recent Harris Poll commissioned by Amazon. Still, there’s nothing like bestowing well-chosen presents to make your loved

back into your gift searches this season. Consider the following suggestions:

* Take the guesswork out of gifting. Discover the best item for everyone on your gift list with curated gift guides online from sites like Amazon. There are also guides at various price points. Know your budget and browse a selection of top gifts under a certain spending amount. * Shop deals online. No need to battle crazed shoppers in person; most retailers now offer the same deals online. That means you can still save massive money while shopping from the comfort of your couch. Americans clearly love that option; Shopify research indicates U.S. online sales this November and December will reach $123.4 billion, a 16 percent boost over last year. Get ahead of the chaos and plan early. Set “Watch a Deal” alerts on the Amazon App to receive notifications when a specific deal is about to go live. That way, you never miss a deal. * Choose automatic gift wrapping. For a small fee, many online retailers can send your gift choices to you (or straight to the recipient) already beautifully wrapped. Save yourself time by opting in, and include a personal message that makes your gift even more meaningful.

ones feel happy and appreciated; Pew Research shows 83 percent of Americans feel joyful at the thought of buying and receiving gifts, while 78 percent feel generous. “As stressful as holiday gift giving can be, it might be a socially enforced tradition precisely because it makes people feel good in the end,” advises Bourree Lam in The Atlantic. “Psychologists have argued gift giving might benefit the giver more than the gift receiver, and result in important non-material emotional gains. One study found spending money on others results in more happiness than spending on oneself.”

Holiday shopping doesn’t have to be just another task to cross off your list. Have more fun with the time-honored tradition of gift giving by planning your strategy ahead and using technology to help you make wise choices.

Luckily, smart shopping can easily put the fun 14 Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

Curiosity

“Curiosity is an inherent characteristic that starts when we are babies and is important for brain development throughout life,” says Rochelle Wainer, Ph.D., vice president of global insights at Baby Einstein. “For parents and caregivers, it’s important to celebrate and support this curiosity as it’s a trait that will help them lead a successful life. It helps cultivate many fundamental skills while building confidence and a love of learning.” While kids may be naturally curious, you can help plant the seeds of success by nurturing their drive for curiosity. Wainer offers simple researchbacked ideas for inspiring curiosity at home: Play-based learning is one of the most effective ways for small children to develop basic skills that set the stage for educational success. Kids are always interacting with their surroundings, so parents can foster this important exploration by engaging with their little ones through talk and touch as they discover everything around them. Next, parents can inspire curiosity and creativity

Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

in infants by setting out basic child-safe instruments for kids to interact with as music plays. Art is another great activity for young children. For example, get some non-toxic finger paint, cover baby in a smock and let them go to town as a little Picasso. Finally, get a plastic bin or table and transform it into a sensory space by placing a variety of different items infants can explore, including utensils like wood spoons and items made from different materials like stuffed animals and fabric swatches. Quality is more important than quantity for toys, and not all toys are created equal when it comes to inspiring curiosity and fostering development of critical skills. Because playing with toys is a favorite pastime for kids, be sure to stock your collection with toys that inspire curiosity and learning. It’s never too early to start reading to your child. Reading is one of the most valuable ways to help children’s language and imagination grow. Whether it’s board books for babies or picture books for toddlers, try sitting down daily with your child and a good book. “Encouraging your child’s curiosity today will cultivate their confidence, creativity and discovery for tomorrow,” says Wainer.

Cold Defense If you’re hearing the people around you start to sniffle and hack, you may feel a sense of impending doom about your chances of avoiding a cough or cold. Unfortunately, since the average American contracts two to three colds every year, according to the CDC, you may be right. But if you do come under the weather, there’s no reason to suffer needlessly. When it comes to anticipating cough and cold season, consider the following care tips from author and health and wellness expert Cassie Sobelton.

* Stock up. When you’re sick, the last thing you want to do is shop for supplies you need for relief. From tea and honey for soothing comfort to tissues and sanitizers for clearing away germs, having it on-hand now will give you the first sense of relief when sickness strikes. * Clean out the cabinet. Always check your medicine cabinet for expired products and purchase new products at the beginning of the season.

spreading germs to friends and co-workers. Take a steamy shower, turn on a humidifier filled with water and a little eucalyptus oil, drink herbal tea with honey and lay low until you’re feeling your best. Entirely avoiding colds or coughs during the cold months of winter may be nearly impossible, but such illnesses can be easier to tolerate if you take steps to reduce their severity and stock up on comforting supplies.

* Fight germs. Make a habit of carrying disinfectant wipes or sprays so you can clean up any areas that may have been exposed to germs, like common areas in the workplace. Be sure to also wash your hands several times a day and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with your fingers. * Fuel your body. This will boost the immune system’s ability to fight off germs. Eating quality foods helps the body thrive and assists in removing toxins and chemicals that can be harmful to the body, so a healthy diet will help your body feel its best. * Relax and recharge. One of the best things you can do to help your body get back to health is to relax. Staying home to rest will not only give your body the care it needs, but will help you avoid Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

Charity Scams Charitable giving is a significant part of many people’s lives and budgets, and individuals are often eager to give back and lend a helping hand to those in need. Unfortunately, not every organization seeking a donation is exactly what it claims to be. If you’re not careful, you could wind up losing your well-intentioned money to a scam. Don’t let the threat of scammers keep you from supporting the causes you care about. By staying educated and informed about charity cons, you will be prepared to spot a scam and avoid falling victim to fraud. While scams and other ploys can arise at any time, they often increase while emotions are running high - like near the holidays or following a natural disaster - when people let their guard down and are eager to support those in need. Such scams may request donations from you over the phone, through the mail, via email or even on social media. They might include charity names that are very similar to legitimate charities, or even mention recent genuine emergency relief efforts. Their goal is to look as authentic as possible in hopes of tricking you. Some of them are very convincing, but you can protect yourself with these fraud awareness tips from Western Union. Be wary of any sense of urgency to donate. Scammers will try to work quickly, urging you to donate before you find any holes in their story. “If you get a phone call where someone is wanting a donation, don’t act right away. Do your research and donate to a recognized charity,” advised Western Union Senior Manager of Anti-Fraud Operations John Skoglund. Remember, authentic charities won’t push you for an immediate response, and will be happy to accept a donation at any time. Don’t be afraid to ask for details about an 20 Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

organization. The charity should happily provide them. You can also find a thirdparty source for information such as Charity Navigator or the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance. If the group that contacted you isn’t recognized as a charity by either of these organizations, you should exercise extra caution and think twice before donating. Only use money transfers to send money to friends and family. Never send money to someone you have not met in person, and never share your banking or credit card information. Legitimate charities will never ask for donations to be sent to an individual through a money transfer service. Some donation requests may come through emails that house fraudulent links taking you to look-a-like websites. These websites have phony donation pages where fraudsters can capture your personal and financial information. Instead of clicking on links in a donation request email, open a new browser window to navigate to the charity’s official website and donate there. Don’t ignore your own concerns regarding a charity’s legitimacy and never assume you’re “just being paranoid.” If you notice any red flags or feel uncertain about the situation, don’t donate. You may just be right after all. To learn more about scams and how to protect yourself, visit the Western Union Consumer Protection Center at www. westernunion. com/ fraudawareness. December 2018

It’s Puzzling

Wrestling the kids (or yourself) away from screens, devices, even the television can be a nearly impossible task, but it’s vital to our mental and even physical health. A jigsaw puzzle requires your full attention and therein lies the magic. Here are some benefits of puzzling that might surprise you. Jigsaw puzzles exercise the left and right sides of your brain at once Your left brain is logical and works in a linear fashion, while your right brain is creative and intuitive. When you’re doing a puzzle, both sides are engaged. Think of it as a mental workout that improves your problem-solving skills and attention span. Jigsaw puzzles improve your short-term memory Can’t remember what you had for lunch yesterday? Jigsaw puzzles can help with that. Doing a puzzle reinforces connections between brain cells, improves mental speed and is an especially effective way to improve short-term memory.

Jigsaw puzzles improve your visual-spatial reasoning When you do a jigsaw puzzle, you need to look at individual pieces and figure out where they’ll fit into the big picture. If you do it regularly, you’ll improve visual-spatial reasoning, which helps with driving a car, packing, using a map, learning and following dance moves, and a whole host of other things. Jigsaw puzzles are a great meditation tool and stress reliever Focusing on one image for a long period of time, without extraneous thoughts entering your mind, is in itself meditation. By doing a jigsaw puzzle, you’re getting the same benefits as if you meditated. Jigsaw puzzles are a great way to connect with family Starting a jigsaw puzzle and keeping it on a table in your living room or kitchen is an invitation for the whole family to participate, whenever they have a few minutes to sit down and focus. It’s a tactic that parents of teens can use for starting a conversation while working toward a shared goal.

Cheese!

Creating a cheeseboard like the ones you see in food magazines might seem intimidating, but it’s actually surprisingly simple. With a little planning and a few flairs, you’ll put together a cheeseboard that guests will nosh on until every last crumb is devoured. Just follow these five steps to a delicious holiday cheeseboard that’s guaranteed to get rave reviews. 1. Select a serving tray: A wood cutting board is timeless, but feel free to get creative with your serving vessel. You can choose your grandmother’s crystal platter, that festive holiday tray or repurpose a favorite cake plate. The only rule is the tray must be large enough to hold all your cheese plus accompaniments without being overcrowded. 2. Choose cheese wisely: Select three to five varieties of cheese for your board. This provides nice variation without overwhelming guests with too many options. When in doubt, remember

Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

this rhyme when shopping: Something old, something new, something stinky and something blue. 3. Get the right amounts: You want enough cheese to satisfy everyone but you don’t wants loads of leftovers. Typically 4-6 ounces of cheese per person is a good estimate, but increase or decrease that amount based on time of day and other foods being served. 4. Add accompaniments and garnishes: For a well-rounded cheeseboard, extras are essential. Crackers, crostini and bread as well as nuts, dried fruit, olives and meats can be customized to your tastes. For a festive take on your cheeseboard, add quintessential holiday-themed foods such as cranberry jam, roasted chestnuts, fresh figs and even pumpkin butter. Whether you’re hosting a casual neighborhood gathering, a festive celebration with family or a formal get-together with business partners, a delectable cheeseboard is ideal for guests to nosh on.
