From Me To You...

Not everyone is born a hero. For Peter Parker it was a radioactive spider bite, Captain America was injected with Super Soldier Serum, and the Hulk absorbed too many Gamma rays.

However it starts, we all love an origin story. It can inspire us, or make us long for a bump of our own, something to push us into the next thing - a better version of ourselves perhaps.

Estrella Publishing began in that time. An idea, the combination of existing talents, a desire to help these small businesses popping up all over the West Valley, and a history in the printing world that goes back a few generations.

Sometimes the origin story is a search for a better way to do things, or a solution that no-one else has come up with for a problem you want solved. Facebook started as a way to connect with others on the internet - that one exploded in a big way. Ferrucio Lamborghini was originally a farmer who made tractors. I guess he just really needed some speed in his life.

“Let’s start thinking about it.� I mumbled, terrified to even try.

Other origin stories are more personal, we all love to tell of the day we met our spouse, how we fell in love, or the birth of our children.

We find ourselves in uncertain times, yet again.

I encourage you to create your own origin story.

You could have the idea for the next Facebook, Lamborghini, or if you are really lucky, Estrella Publishing.

I guess origin stories are really the tales of rebirth, re-invention. A new beginning. Let me tell you a tale of a new beginning that happened 10 years ago...

What was your favorite thing in Up The Hill magazine in the last 10 years? - Up The Hill magazine has had many great things over the years. It has introduced many small businesses to the community, it has been apart of fundraising efforts and donations.

I still love recalling when a few of us small businesses got together and donated who knows how many cases of water to our Estrella fire department/police station. The tour of the facility was great.

How has being in Up The Hill magazine helped your business?

- The Up the Hill magazine has allowed me to not only advertise my business within my community, but become part of this great community. I could not think of any other place I would want to live and work in. Up The Hill Magazine has definitely brought the community to me and me to the community. It is always a pleasure to connect with an EMR resident, a neighbor in this great community. A big part of that has been because of the magazine.

From a personal perspective it would have to be the blessing of my wife’s health, after enduring brain surgery to remove a massive tumor and then being told here was an 80-90% change it would return, here we are many years later with no signs of the tumor returning and minimal impact from all she has had to endure.

What is the biggest change you have seen in Estrella Publishing? - Al and Catherine started out publishing one magazine (Up The Hill) over the past 10 years they have expanded their reach to 10 magazines, I have been thoroughly impressed with their professionalism and tenacity.

Their ability to grow their business at such a consistent rate has been remarkable and we have been blessed to play a role in their success.

What was your favorite thing in Up The Hill magazine in the last 10 years? - I would say that what stands out to me is the attention paid to the cover photography and the manner in which Estrella Publishing highlights and honors the members of the community.

Support Our Teachers Whether your community’s schools are in person, online or a mix of both, it’s the teachers who have the hard work of making school a positive experience. This year in particular, it’s critical to support teachers to position them for success so students can thrive. Consider these steps in supporting teachers and showing you care.

The Bug Guy

Homeowners might be planning some exciting home improvement projects, from major renovations to DIY fixes large and small.

One of the more important aspects of home maintenance is proper pest prevention to help ensure the home remains a masterpiece more so than a money pit. Termites in particular pose a major threat, causing more than $5 billion in property damage each year – costs that are typically not covered by homeowners’ insurance policies.

Depending on the species, termite colonies can consist of millions of members, all of which may be hidden out of sight either tunneling underground or inside a household’s wooden structure. Various types of termites can be found across the country. Regardless of your location, homes of every size and model throughout the country are at risk for termite damage, and property owners need to take necessary precautions to protect their homes and their wallets.

In Arizona we primarily have Western Subterranean Termites: The group of termites known collectively as subterranean termites includes some of the most destructive termite species. They prefer to nest and forage in moist soil as well as wood that is in contact with soil, hence their name. These termites build distinctive tube-like shelters, often referred to as “mud tubes,” that extend from the soil to a wood source. They eat wood 24 hours a day, seven days a week, using their saw-toothed jaws to bite off small fragments of wood one piece at a time. Over time, this feeding behavior can degrade the structural integrity of a building, potentially causing a total collapse.

Subterranean termite damage threatens homeowners across the country, as they’re found in every state in the U.S. In order to prevent an infestation and costly termite damage, the National Pest Management Association has a number of tips. Termites need water to thrive, so make sure to eliminate or correct any moisture concerns in and around the home by repairing leaking faucets or water pipes, and diverting water away from the house with functioning downspouts and gutters.

Routinely inspect the foundation of the home for signs of mud tubes and wood that sounds hollow when tapped. Additionally, maintain an 18-inch gap between soil and any wood portions of the home, and store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house. Consider scheduling an annual termite inspection by a licensed pest control professional specializing in termite control work.

Termites cannot be controlled with DIY measures and can result in a large infestation and costly, structural damage if not handled with the help of a pest control professional.

Money Matters It’s almost Thanksgiving. And although 2020 may have been a difficult year for you, you can probably still find things for which you can be thankful – such as your family. How can you show your appreciation for your loved ones?

Here are a few suggestions: • Invest in your children’s future. If you have young children – or even grandchildren – one of the greatest gifts you can give them is the gift of education. You may want to consider contributing to a higher education funding vehicle.

• Be generous. Do you have older children, just starting out in life? If so, they could well use a financial gift to help pay off student loans, buy a car or even make a down payment on a home. You can give up to $15,000 per year, per recipient, without incurring gift taxes.

• Review your insurance coverage. If you weren’t around, it would leave some gaping holes – financial and otherwise – in the lives of your family members. That’s why it’s essential you maintain adequate life insurance. Your

employer might offer a group plan, but it may not be sufficient to meet your needs. There’s no magic formula for determining the right amount of coverage, so you’ll have to consider a variety of factors: your age, spouse’s income, number of children and so on. Also, you may want to consider disability insurance – if you were unable to work for a while, it could cause a real problem for your family’s finances.

• Preserve your financial independence. When your children are young, you take care of them.

But you certainly don’t want them to have to do the same for you – so it’s essential you maintain your financial independence throughout your life.

You can do this in at least a couple of ways. First, consider investing regularly in your 401(k), IRA and other retirement accounts. The greater your resources during your retirement years, the less you may ever need to count on your family. And second, you may want to protect yourself from the devastating costs of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay. A financial professional can suggest a strategy to help you cope with these expenses.

• Create an estate plan. To leave a legacy to your family, you don’t have to be wealthy – but you do need a comprehensive estate plan. You’ll have to think through a lot of questions, such as: Have I named beneficiaries for all my assets? How much do I want to leave to each person?

Do I need to go beyond a simple will to establish an arrangement such as a living trust? For help in answering all these issues, you’ll want to work with an attorney.

Harissa-spiced Steak with Grape and Preserved Lemon Salad - Yield: Makes 4 servings Ingredients 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided 2 garlic cloves, grated or minced 2 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon honey, divided

Directions • Combine 1 tablespoon oil, garlic, soy, 1 tablespoon of honey, and harissa in a glass pie plate. Add the meat and toss to cover.

Marinate 30 minutes at room temperature or cover and refrigerate, then marinate 2 hours to overnight.

• Heat grill to high. Pat steak dry and grill 7 to 9 minutes on each side for medium rare.

Transfer to cutting board and let stand while making the salad.

• Combine the remaining olive oil and honey with lemon juice, preserved lemon, thyme, salt, pepper and grapes. Slice steak into 1/2-inch pieces and divide between serving plates. Top with the grape salad and serve.

Business 411 When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.”

There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown.

• The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend.

• Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times.

• Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession.

• When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current and future sales. An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.” An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits.

Another strategy used by marketers is using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return.

Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides. Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share.

Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.”

This year when it comes to youth sports, seasons have shifted, practices may look different and competitions may be postponed, all of which have been difficult for kids who simply want to enjoy their time on and off the field, court, mat or pool deck. As parents navigate this new normal for their kids in sports, it’s more important than ever to support their kids’ athletic pursuits while also keeping safety in mind.

“In addition to performance, right now safety in youth sports is so important,” says author and sports nutrition expert Leslie Bonci, nutrition consultant for the Kansas City Chiefs. “Parents want their children to thrive in athletics whatever that might look like this year - but also want to keep their health and safety in mind, so it’s important to take some proactive steps.”

To help guide parents, Bonci shares her top tips for maintaining a safe and healthy lifestyle for your child no matter their athletic interest: Prioritize safety steps at home and away In sports settings, discourage sharing bottles, clean and sanitize them daily with water and liquid household chlorine bleach and eliminate any bulk food or beverages during practice and games, using individually packaged items instead. When they get home from practice, get them in the habit of washing hands again before settling in.

Stay hydrated to fuel the body and focus the mind Proper hydration is important both on and off the field of play. Rethink their drink and increase electrolyte intake with drinks such as Gatorade.

Promote smart snack and drink choices Stock your fridge and pantry with wholesome choices for growing bodies so kids make smart choices even when you’re not around. Cheese sticks and nut butters are excellent protein sources. Whole-grain crackers can provide a high-quality carbohydrate. Nuts and trail mixes are easy on-the-go options that satisfy hungry bellies.

“Things are certainly different now in youth sports, but that doesn’t mean kids can’t continue to do the things they love in mindful ways,” says Bonci. “A few smart steps to support wellness can help your young athlete be the best no matter the environment.”

Laundry During Covid

Recommendations from the North American Cleaning and Sanitization Expert Panel offer guidelines to help reduce the spread of infections and illness when it comes to laundry.

These methods can give you peace of mind, knowing that you’re doing all you can to help reduce the spread of viruses that cause COVID-19, the flu and colds. Here are some easy-to-follow do’s and don’ts for laundry best practices in your home:

DO use a deeper-cleaning, high-quality laundry detergent that removes deeply embedded soils and germs.

DO always wash or sanitize hands after handling soiled laundry and transferring wet laundry from washer to dryer, even in healthy households.

DO use special precautions if COVID-19 is suspected or confirmed. Wear disposable gloves

if possible when handling dirty laundry from a person who is sick. Do not shake dirty laundry.

Clean and disinfect clothes hampers, appliance and other surfaces that contact soiled laundry.

Remove gloves, and wash or sanitize hands right away.

DO use the highest temperature clothes washer setting you can safely use, according to the care instructions for the items being laundered if a respiratory illness such as COVID-19, the flu or a cold is suspected or confirmed.

DON’T wait to wash soiled clothes or bedding of an ill family member - wash those items as soon as possible to avoid spreading infection in your household.

DON’T wash bedding or clothes from a family member who is ill with laundry from other members of the household. Keeping that laundry separate can help prevent viruses or bacteria from spreading to others. Wash in hot water, using a deeper-cleaning laundry detergent plus a registered sanitizer and/or sanitizing cycle on the washing machine. Dry in a dryer on high heat. Wearing disposable gloves when handling soiled laundry from an ill household member can provide an extra layer of protection.

Following these laundry practices can help ensure your family will be less likely to spread bacteria or viruses, helping to reduce the risk of illness for everyone in your home.
