From Me To You...

The world is full of distractions. As I sit down to write this column, for example, I am listening to music (brain building Grieg but admittedly it is a distraction), looking out the window at my neighbors washing their vehicle, smelling my breakfast cooling on the counter, and a myriad of other small things.

One distraction that I love is television. In particular cooking shows. There is nothing more enjoyable to me than watching other people cook and thinking that if I had the time or the patience I too could make a perfect Mille Feuille or Beef Wellington. I am also realistic enough to know that I probably shouldn’t try them if I want to keep the waistline I have worked so hard for. I know some people who cook for others and do not eat anything themselves. Not me. I am the ‘taste a little as you cook then dig in when it is ready’ kind of person.

One cooking show that I delight in is The Great British Baking Show. Not only is there a cornucopia of delightful food, but the contestants are a joy to watch. They all get their instructions and off they go. Then something wonderful happens. They start to help each other. Even the hosts get in on the act. “What can I do to help dear?” They often ask, grabbing a large bowl or sifting an ingredient. And when the time draws to a close all the contestants jump into action. “I’m done, love, what can I do?” Or “Let me put those on your plate for you!” One time a contestant noticed an oven that had not been turned on and she helpfully told her fellow baker as she turned it up to the correct temperature. I love it! It is their competitive camaraderie that makes me smile.

My husband doesn’t understand it at all, shaking his head in bemusement. “Don’t they realize this is a competition?” he mumbles under his breath as he walks away.

After watching Bread Week I decided it was high time to get back into the kitchen and whip up a country loaf. In my youth I baked all the time. I joke about Mille Feuille but I can actually make it, rough puff pastry and all.

Now this baking occurred at a different altitude and hemisphere so the ingredients are not at all the same. Did you know that flour contains different amounts of gluten depending on where you are in the world?? Something to be aware of if you are making bread. Needless to say, my recipes no longer work, so I scoured the internet and set to baking. The first day (I had forgotten how long it takes to make bread) yielded one sprained wrist (kneading accident), flour in my eyes and a slightly dense loaf. Not to be defeated I ate it with as much butter as I could slap on it and the next day I adjusted my kneading, proving and baking times and I managed to bake a pretty decent loaf of bread. I think I may try to make Beef Wellington after all.

A Facebook group is a page created for an organization, community or business to promote activities. Users can then join the group and post their thoughts on a wall and interact through discussion threads. Groups are a great way to connect with friends and neighbors and have discussions that are relevant to your community such a local business, school activities, criminal activities, lost fur babies, request recommendations, etc.... Understanding Data Use With unlimited talk and text becoming more common offerings, what most of us are really paying for on our cellphone bills is data.

You’re using mobile data whenever you’re not connected to Wi-Fi and doing things like browsing the web, using apps, checking social media, sending or receiving picture messages, and streaming music or videos. Here are a few important things to understand to make sure that you get the best service, at the best price, on your monthly data plan.

How it’s measured Simply put, data usage is the amount of data you use in a billing cycle (usually a 30-day time frame). Your cellphone plan’s data is used whenever you use your phone’s internet connection to perform a task. Anytime you send email, download a photo, stream video, view a web page, or post on social media, your phone is sending or receiving data across your carrier’s network. A megabyte (MB) and the larger gigabyte (GB) are the units used for measuring data. Industry analysts have found that an average cellphone user consumes about 5GB of

data per month. It’s hard to determine exactly how much data specific activities consume, since file sizes and download times can vary. To provide a general idea, it’s estimated that with 1GB of data, you can browse the Internet and use social media for around 40 minutes a day, stream about 10 hours of music in a month, and view 1-2 movies a month.

High-speed limits When a cell phone plan has a designated monthly allotment of data, it means that you’ll get optimal data speeds up until you have reached the limit. So, if your plan has a 3GB data limit, you can use up to 3GB of data at full speed. Once you go over that 3GB of data usage, you can expect to encounter slower data speeds. With that in mind, you might expect unlimited data plans to provide you with all of the best data you can possibly use in your billing cycle. But this is not the case. Most “unlimited” data plans actually have what is referred to as a “deprioritization threshold.” This is a cap on your high-speed data, meaning that if you reach the threshold (ranging anywhere from 20GB to 50GB) during a billing cycle you will actually be subject to slower data speeds.

Choosing the right plan So, the first step in managing your data usage is being realistic about how much you really need.

The best way is to track your usage through your cellphone carrier: most offer up-to-the-minute details on your data usage either online or through a mobile app. Then, seek out a carrier who offers plans that fit what you really use.

Before you decide, read the fine print. Find out what, if any, caps are placed on your usage, or if there are fees for going over or changing your plan. By understanding your own needs and what your carrier specifically allows, you’ll have everything you need to get the data you require.

Focus on Estrella Did you know that students who average two days or more of absence from school each month are likely to be categorized as chronically absent?

Of chronically absent students in kindergarten and first grade, a whopping 83% will be unable to read at grade level by the end of third grade.

Statistics show that students who cannot read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade are four times more likely to drop out of school. No wonder EMES is actively encouraging everyone to strive for perfect attendance. It can make a big difference in a student’s success!

Third graders from the classrooms of Mrs. Bryce and Mrs. Davidson danced their original number, “Class Act” on the “Ballet Under The Stars” performance stage at the North Lake lawn. They were lauded as open-minded risk takers who were willing to try something out of their comfort zones.

Mrs. Landaiche said, “The students loved performing for the residents of Canta Mia and getting to share the stage with the students from Westar. So many parents were thrilled at the opportunity to have their students go off campus and share their talents with the surrounding community. We look forward to future collaborations.” Word has it that a holiday performance at Canta Mia is being discussed.

Not Ready For Fido?

According to the ASPCA, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters every year. Adding a shelter pet to your family can be fulfilling, but what if you’re not ready or able to adopt?

1. Donate money or product.

Many animal shelters and rescue organizations have direct donation links posted on their websites.

Monetary donations go toward pet food, medical attention and vaccines for the animals. Animal shelters and rescue organizations also often create Amazon wish lists with desired products. Shelters typically ask for pet treats, toys and grooming supplies.

2. Provide a temporary home.

An increased number of animals placed in shelters need foster care before they are ready to find their forever homes. Foster needs range from post-op surgical care to puppy growth care

and medical support.

Food, medication and other supplies are typically provided when fostering.

Contact your local shelter to fill out an application. Once approved, your local shelter will work closely with you to find the right foster pet for your household.

3. Volunteer at your local shelter or rescue organization.

Animal shelters and rescue organizations offer numerous volunteer roles, such as dog walkers, adoption support and training support. Many positions don’t require prior experience and can be applied for on your local shelter or rescue organization’s website. Volunteer positions vary in expectations and demand, so there is a position for everyone.

4. Take photos of adoptable pets.

Help animals find homes sooner by taking adoption photos for local shelters. Many people search for adoptable pets online, and with a great profile picture, animals have a greater chance at being adopted.

5. Become an advocate.

Follow animal shelters and rescue organizations on social media and reshare their content. Talk to your family and friends about the importance of caring for shelter pets while they await their forever homes and share how they can help.

Money Matters Each year, Veterans Day allows us to show our respect for the sacrifices that military veterans have made for our country. But have you ever stopped to think about what lessons our veterans can teach us about how we conduct various aspects of our lives? For example, consider the following traits and how they might apply to your actions as an investor: • Perseverance – Even veterans who have not served in armed combat have had to persevere in challenging situations. As an investor, in what ways do you need to show perseverance? For one thing, you’ll need to stick it out even in the face of volatile markets and short-term losses.

And you’ll need the discipline to make investing a top priority throughout your life, even with all the other financial demands you face.

• Sense of duty – It goes without saying that veterans and military personnel have felt, and still feel, a sense of duty. As an investor, you are trying to meet some personal goals, such as an enjoyable retirement lifestyle, but you, too, are acting with a sense of duty in some ways, because you’re also investing to help your family. There are the obvious goals, like sending children to college or helping them start a business, but you’re also making their lives easier by maintaining your financial independence throughout your life, freeing them of potential financial burdens.

Military veterans have a lot to teach us in many activities of life – and investing is one of them.

So, on Veterans Day, do what you can to honor our veterans and follow their behaviors as you chart your own financial future.

Volunteer Opportunities Mrs. Morris, the Estrella Mountain Elementary School librarian and queen of after-school clubs, created a special Sunday volunteer event for the school’s junior high students to give back to the community at the end of September. Almost 30 students helped to clean up a local park. All Estrella junior high students have a responsibility to perform a certain number of community service hours, depending on their grade level and their membership in National Junior Honor Society.

Cougar Community Volunteers, the adult volunteer group at Estrella, is off to a great beginning this year. Parents, grandparents, and other family members, as well as community members, are welcome to join the group. Before beginning in a volunteer slot, each volunteer must attend an orientation and get fingerprinted and photographed for a volunteer badge.

Volunteer slots are available for as little as 25 minutes per week. A 25-minute slot might involve guarding a crosswalk before or after school, or helping kids into cars at the end of

the day. People who have a bit more time to help at school are making copies for teachers, re-shelving library books, or working directly with students on reading or math skills. We currently have volunteers helping in classrooms with teachers of every grade level in our school.

It seems that there are never enough people to fill all of the requests that we get from Estrella teachers, who are very enthusiastic about having volunteers in their rooms. The highest demand for volunteers comes from the early grades – kindergarten, first, second and third grades.

Cougar Community Volunteers will host a volunteer orientation at Estrella Mountain Elementary School on Wednesday November 13 at 9:30 AM to review district volunteer guidelines and available volunteer positions. Elevate Your Evening Whether you’re hosting a sit-down dinner, a family-style meal or a cocktail party, offer unique food and drink choices to suit the season. A charcuterie board is a great start - all you need to add are some stand-out drinks to make an impression.

1. Create a charcuterie board. Charcuterie boards can be appetizers or the main attraction at a cocktail party. Select cured meats like salami, smoked sausage and prosciutto along with with spreadable choices like pate, plus an array of cheeses. Choose softer, mild cheeses and harder, sharp cheeses to appeal to every palate.

Add sliced French bread and/or crackers, with accompaniments like olives or fruit. Round out the board with little dishes of mustard, honey or quince paste. Get creative as you arrange everything on a board or platter. The idea is to provide guests with a variety of seasonal flavors they can mix and match in fun ways.

2. Punch up your party. Instead of adding bartender to your multitude of host duties, make a delicious Rum Punch ahead of time:

Rum Punch 3 ounces Angostura 5 Year Rum 1.5 ounces lime juice 3 teaspoons brown cane sugar 1 dash Angostura orange bitters 4 dashes Angostura aromatic bitters Garnish: lime wedge, grated nutmeg, maraschino cherry Shake all ingredients and strain into ice-filled glass. Garnish with lime, cherry and nutmeg.

3. Sugar and spice and all things nice. For an easy dessert you can make well in advance, offer guests a platter of chocolate truffles or freshbaked cookies. Another fun option: Cut squares of ready-made puff pastry, add your favorite jam, fresh fruit, chocolate or nut spread, then fold the dough, seal with wet fingers and bake on parchment paper at 400 degrees for about 10 minutes.

There’s no reason fall entertaining can’t have the same fun and flair as summer soirees. With great food and drink choices, the possibilities are endless.

The Bug Guy Scorpions!!

Scorpions are a common nuisance pest in the Southwest Valley that are closely related to spiders, ticks, and mites. Although these pests are portrayed in Hollywood movies as being aggressive towards humans, scorpions try to avoid human contact and their well-known “stings” tend to be accidental. Most scorpion stings are like that of a bee sting, while others can be deadly and cause severe reactions. With 1,200 species of scorpions across the world, it is important to know what species might be lurking in your backyard and how you can avoid a run-in with them.

Arizona Bark Scorpion The Arizona Bark Scorpion is the most wellknown species of scorpion living in North America. These scorpions can deliver a deadly sting and are one of a few species of scorpions that has a high level of neural venom that causes general illness for up to three days. As their name suggests, Arizona Bark Scorpions are native to Arizona but also inhabit Utah, New Mexico, and Nevada. These scorpions are yellow with horizontal lines, making it easier for them to blend in with their desert habitats.

Arizona Hairy Scorpion This scorpion is the largest species living in the U.S., growing to sizes of up to 5.5 inches. Arizona hairy scorpions can be found in California, Nevada, and Utah and can capture small lizards living in the deserts due to its larger size. These scorpions have yellow legs and a brown body.

Striped Tail Scorpion These southwestern U.S. scorpions are native to the Arizona and New Mexico regions. Striped tail scorpions get their unique name from the dark brown stripes that line its tail. Like any other scorpion, this species is fast-moving.

Scorpion Prevention To avoid run-ins with scorpions, eliminate harborage sites around your home, including woodpiles, trash and debris. Homeowners should also consider removing stones and landscape timbers from the property, and store firewood at least twenty feet from the home and at least five inches up off the ground.

Scorpions from the Southwestern United States are also known to enter structures through torn screens and holes and cracks in building exteriors, so it’s equally important to seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home with caulk and repair any damaged window and door screens. These pests also enter homes through poorly fitted garage and entry doors.
