From Me To You...

“Welcome to the new normal!” How many times have you heard that recently? And what does your ‘new normal’ look like? Is it much the same as before Covid came crashing into our lives?

Are you back to work and socializing, or are you confined to your home, sheltering in place?

I think most of us are somewhere in the middle of those options. Back to work, absolutely, but perhaps being more mindful of who you see and how you take part in social gatherings.

Many of you have taken on the role of substitute teacher. I know that is the biggest change in my daily life. My son is enrolled in an online version of high school which involves watching a very dry, pre-recorded, ancient (I am talking early 1990’s) presentation for each subject and participating in tests and quizzes to show his grasp of the knowledge. The problem is that it just doesn’t work.

What teenager do you know that can learn effectively this way? Oh, and to add a cherry on top, there are many times when he has answered a question correctly (for example using the word one instead of the numerical value 1) but it was marked incorrect.

Frustration is high in our household on those days. I am sure many of you have similar stories to tell and I sympathize with you.

So to help him as much as I can, I have been auditing his classes. As he watches the Power Point presentation, I take notes and think of ways I would have presented that information. I try to explain the lesson in a way that a teenager will understand and absorb. I can do this in some subjects with ease. History? Love it! Sociology?

Not a problem. Physics???? Oh dear lord, physics.

I purchased Physics for Dummies to help me and I have come to the conclusion that I am indeed a dummy in physics. Not because of the Physics but because of the Math! I have discovered glaring holes in my Mathematical education, in particular Trigonometry and Algebra. Turns out you need a sound grasp of Trig and Algebra to solve the many, many, many equations in Physics.

Who knew? So off I went and purchased Algebra for Dummies. I should probably get Trig for Dummies while I am at it ...

Turns out that my ‘new normal’ consists of realizing how many gaps I have in my education and trying to prevent that from becoming my son’s reality too. Good luck to you all, whatever your ‘new normal’ is throwing at you!

On Our Cover Daniel Wood is a proud husband, and father of three sons. His life has been marked by service.

Daniel joined the United States Marine Corps after high-school and went to war defending our freedoms in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

His selfless dedication to our nation and his community continued after being honorably discharged then serving as a police officer.

He moved with his family to Arizona in 2016, where he has grown strong roots. Try a flexitarian diet Meat is often the most expensive item in a family’s shopping cart.

By experimenting with a flexitarian diet, you can cut down on grocery spending and instill healthy eating habits in children. You can start simple by skipping meatballs on spaghetti night or using beans instead of meat on taco Tuesday.

Keep your head up, then down when scanning shelves The most popularly marketed foods are stored at eye level and typically have higher prices than less-known name brands or store-brand alternatives. Your best bet is to look at the higher and lower shelves, as that’s where the most costeffective products are located.

Use coupons and shop the sales When you enter a store, pick up the weekly flyer if one is available and flip through the coupons and sales. Emergency Fund Many of life’s interruptions can’t be predicted.

Not having funds set aside for unexpected problems can leave you racking up high credit card debt or putting yourself in other difficult financial straits. Here’s how to create an emergency fund to protect your finances.

1. Do the math; set a goal.

While financial experts recommend having between three and six months of living expenses in an emergency fund, this number might not be realistic if you’re just beginning to save. It’s often a good idea to start with a smaller goal, then, as you get into the habit of saving, you can slowly start to raise your future goals until you reach the three-to six-month threshold.

2. Decide where to put the funds.

The money in your emergency fund should be kept separate from accounts you use for paying

bills or making purchases and be easily accessible when an emergency arises. Good options include a savings account or money market account.

3. Get creative and save.

Building an emergency fund means you’ll need to trim spending elsewhere. Quick fixes like evaluating your cell phone plan, cutting the cord on cable or bringing your lunch to work can help free up money for savings. Or think bigger, like refinancing your home or car. Use a refinance calculator to see whether a new loan will save you money.

4. Save unexpected windfalls.

You can boost the balance of your emergency fund when you least expect it with “found” money. Invest birthday or holiday cash gifts, work bonuses and tax refunds directly into your account. Since this money isn’t part of your typical spending, it’s easy to use it for saving without missing it.

5. Make saving automatic.

Treat your emergency fund like any other monthly recurring bill and have funds directly deposited into your savings account each month.

Teacher Needs Heading back to school during the COVID-19 pandemic means most of our nation’s teachers are facing unprecedented challenges. Some teachers are implementing new rules, procedures and classroom configurations to limit the spread of the illness. Others are creating entirely new online curricula for students who will be learning from home. Many teachers are tasked with doing both at the same time, often without additional financial resources to make it all happen.

A recent survey of 1,000 U.S. teachers by the education nonprofit DonorsChoose found that 86% of teachers report feeling uncertain, anxious and overwhelmed as they prepare for the coming school year.

Money Matters When you retire, you’ve learned a lot about all sorts of things, helping you avoid some of the mistakes you made earlier in life. However, you may still be susceptible to financial missteps specifically related to your retirement years. How can you dodge these errors? Consider these suggestions:

Manage your withdrawal rate carefully. You will likely need to tap into your retirement accounts – your IRA and 401(k) or similar employersponsored plan. But you should establish an annual withdrawal rate that’s appropriate for your situation. By withdrawing too much each year, especially in the early years of your retirement, you risk outliving your resources. You may want to consult with a financial professional to determine the withdrawal amount that’s right for you.

Don’t underestimate health care costs. Once you turn 65, you will be eligible for Medicare, but you may still need a Medicare supplement plan and will probably also incur other expenses. In fact, A

healthy 65-year-old couple who retired in 2019 will need nearly $390,000 over their remaining years just to pay for health care.

Don’t invest too conservatively. Once you’re retired, you might think that you should take as few chances as possible with your investments – after all, you simply have less time for them to bounce back from a downturn than you did during your working years. Don’t be more generous than you can afford.

October! Wow we made it through three quarters of 2020, I know you are probably wondering what is next? La Niña is officially here and will likely stick around through the upcoming winter.

The Climate Prediction Center issued a “La Niña Advisory” due to cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures being observed along the eastern equatorial Pacific. This pattern typically pushes the jet stream, or upper-level steering winds, farther north, keeping the storm track away from the Desert Southwest. For Arizona, this means winter will likely be warmer and drier than normal.

The news comes after going through the hottest and driest summer on record. 97% of Arizona is in a drought, with more than half the state under an extreme drought. During a La Niña weather pattern we can expect this drought to continue.

What are some of the bugs that will thrive you ask? Omnivore insects will be the first to experience a population surge, followed by the insectivore insects. This time of year is also prime termite season, so keep an eye out for termite shelter tubes on your foundation wall. If you find any evidence contact your exterminator for a free inspection!

October is also the time when our rattlesnake population begins to wind down and prepare for hibernation. With cooler nights rattlesnakes will seek concrete patios and porches to stay warm before hunting, always look before you step out on to your patio or porch to avoid stepping on a rattlesnake.

Midday Slump?

You’ve probably felt it - that time of day when your brain gets foggy and you have trouble concentrating. All you can think of is taking a nap. For some, it happens right before or after lunch, for others in the late afternoon. What can you do to keep better energy and focus throughout your entire day? Here are a few tips that will not only help you power through your day better but will also improve your overall health - mental and physical.

1. Give yourself a break If you spend much of your day sitting, taking frequent short breaks to switch up your activity level will help you stay alert. Set a timer on your to remind you to get up once or twice every hour * Take a brief walk, even just around the house * Do gentle stretches to loosen up * Dance to upbeat music, pumping your arms in the air * Tackle a quick errand or chore Anything that gets your blood flowing will perk you up - just don’t wait until you’re already feeling drowsy to take a break.

2. Breathe easy As part of your regular breaks, or even more frequently, sit up straight in your chair and take a few deep breaths in a row to get more oxygen to your brain. Establish a habit, like taking a deep breath after each email you answer, or before a meeting.

3. Try an energy supplement drink Instead of reaching for a sugary beverage or tenth cup of coffee.

Don’t wait until you’re feeling an energy slump to take good care of yourself. A proactive approach to your health and wellness will help you feel better and stay focused all day long.

Senior Pets

As members of the family, we love our pets unconditionally. We would do anything to ensure they live long and happy lives with us. That’s why as they age it is important to be aware of the different ways to care for our pets to help them remain healthy and energized as they reach senior status.

Cats and dogs are generally considered senior when they reach the age of 7 years. No matter what age your pet is, make sure they get regular veterinary checkups and necessary preventive care, like required vaccinations. Watch for signs of aging that could need attention. You may notice changes in their skin and coat, their appetites may diminish, or their activity level may slow down.

“Changes in appetite and behavior may indicate underlying health concerns, so it’s worth sharing your observations with your vet,” said Dr. Kurt Venator, DVM, Ph.D. and chief veterinary officer at Purina. “Dogs may also experience hearing, vision or cognitive changes as they age that

How can you keep an older pet active and alert?

Try out a couple of these activities with your pet: * Play with new toys and games - When was the last time you got your pet a new toy, or played a game of fetch? Puzzle feeders and games can go a long way to keeping your pet mentally active. * Introduce variety to your pet’s life - Vary your walking route by visiting an unfamiliar park or drive to a walking trail to give your dog a new place to discover. Introduce your cat to the outdoors by taking her on a walk on a harness and leash. * Train your pet - Yes, even older pets can learn new tricks. * Spend time with your pet - Petting, talking to and playing with your pets can help keep them happy and alert. Grooming them regularly will also give you a chance to bond as well as look for changes in their skin, toenails, ears and coat that your vet may need to know about.

Biking For Kids For kids, biking is one of the gateways to growing up. Popular films and TV hits such as “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” and “Stranger Things” highlight the joy a bike can bring as a fun way to explore or spend time kicking around the neighborhood. Yet, according to a study from the Outdoor Industry Association, bike riding among kids declined 19% between 2007 and 2019.
