From Me To You...

Time is a funny thing. For many years time seemed to go so slowly. Every day lasted an eternity and there was little to distinguish one day from another. I measured my life in seasons or school and no school. Admittedly I was raising four children under 10 and wrangling my life in a new state, but still... I guess it is true that when you have small children the days are long and the years are short. I look back at that time in my life and remember just getting through the day.

Now it is very different. I spent months planning a trip this year. Coordinating schedules with the friends we were travelling with, finding and booking the best place to stay, organizing the things that needed to be taken care of here while we were gone. Then suddenly we were in the car, driving to our destination. The vacation itself flew by and we were home! Blink. Now I am submerged in my life again, that takes no time at all by the way, and looking ahead to other events.

I celebrated a milestone birthday this month and perhaps that is why I am musing on the subject of time. By all intents and purposes I am now middle aged. Wow, how did that happen? My parents were old when they hit this birthday, heck they were old 10 years before this birthday!

And here I am, feeling the healthiest I think I have ever felt, more secure in myself as a person in my personal life, my marriage and my friendships. And yet. I have this label.

There is a theory in Sociology that is called the Self-Labelling Prophesy. Basically it posits that if you name someone in a certain way then that person will live up to the moniker you give them. The Smart Kid will achieve more success academically, The Bad Seed will feel like there is no point in trying and will continue to act out, The Bad Dog will continue to chew your baseboards and jump on the furniture. Middle Aged Woman will get ready for retirement and take up knitting. I don’t think I will go down that way. I already know how to knit and honestly it is not for me.

I have not even begun to do everything I am capable of and want to do. I just have to get to retirement so I have the time to do some of those things! And there it is again. Rushing towards something to be able to do the thing I think I can’t do yet. I need to slow down and be in the moment.

That is a phrase we are hearing a lot recently. It is apt though. We all could do with stopping and appreciating the now. Look around at your life and see what you have achieved already. What is good in your day? Whether it is as big as buying a new house or as small as checking off an item on your to-do list. Savor it. Enjoy the victories and don’t let time drag you along in its wake.

When I was 26 years old, I was attacked with a baseball bat right outside of my house. After taking some swings to my head, the last thing I remember before waking up in the hospital was someone yelling “Why won’t your fat a** just die!” That was the spark that ignited my weight loss journey. I have struggled with weight and self-esteem issues since childhood and spent a big chunk of my life feeling sick, tired, and unmotivated. When I started my journey to better health, I was at 49% body fat and 14 months later I was at 11%! I lost 103lbs and since then I have gained 25lbs of lean muscle!

I graduated from the EMT program at Phoenix College and attended the Phoenix Fire Academy knowing I needed a career that would keep me active. While waiting for a position, I started working as a personal trainer and found my calling helping others achieve similar results.

Seven years later I still love it every day! Not every trainer can understand how you feel or how hard it is to change, but I have been there and know what it takes!

Money Matters We’ve still got a couple of months until 2019 draws to a close, but it’s not too early to make some end-of-the-year financial moves. In fact, it may be a good idea to take some of these steps sooner rather than later.

Here are a few suggestions: • Boost your 401(k) contributions. Ask your employer if you can increase your 401(k) contributions in 2019, and if you receive a bonus before the year ends, you may be able to use that toward your 401(k), too.

• Review your portfolio. It’s always a good idea to review your investment portfolio at least once a year, and now is as good a time as any. Look carefully at how your portfolio is constructed.

Is it still properly diversified, or has it become overweighted in some areas? Does it still fit your risk tolerance, or do you find yourself worrying excessively about short-term price swings? These

are the types of factors that might lead you to make some changes.

• Don’t forget about your RMDs. Once you turn 70½, you generally need to start taking withdrawals – the technical term is “required minimum distributions,” or RMDs – from your traditional IRA and your 401(k) or similar plan. After the first year in which you take these RMDs, you must take them by the end of each year thereafter. If you don’t withdraw at least the minimum amount (calculated based on your age, account balance and other factors) you face a penalty of 50% of what you should have taken out – a potential loss of thousands of dollars. So, take your RMDs before Dec. 31.

• Think about next year’s opportunities. Start thinking now about what you want to do in 2020 from a financial standpoint. Can you afford to ratchet up your investments in your retirement plans? If you have children or grandchildren, have you started saving for college? Have you considered ways to protect your financial independence if you ever need some type of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay? If these or other items are on your financial to-do list, start planning now to get them done next year.

Time goes quickly – so don’t get left behind without having taken the steps to keep moving toward your financial goals.

Medicare Enrollment Medicare Open Enrollment is about to kick off.

For most people already enrolled in Medicare, the annual Open Enrollment period (Oct. 15 through Dec. 7) is the only opportunity to make changes to your existing Medicare coverage.

During Medicare Open Enrollment, Medicare beneficiaries can switch Part D prescription drug plans; switch Medicare Advantage plans; switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage; or switch from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare.

Dan Klein, president and CEO of the Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation, offers the following tips for navigating Medicare Open Enrollment.

1. Do your homework Changes to your health status, doctors or other healthcare providers, prescription drugs or budget may mean that your current plan is no longer the most cost-effective choice for you.

There may be assistance available to you if you cannot afford the out-of-pocket costs for your prescription medications. You should research your options now.

You may qualify for a federal Medicare Low Income Subsidy (LIS) to help pay for your prescription drug costs. You may also be eligible for a patient assistance program that provides people with financial assistance to cover out-ofpocket costs for their medical treatments. You can learn more about PAN and patient assistance charities by visiting PANFoundation.org. 4. Assess if your plan is still a good fit for your budget When selecting a plan, you should consider what you will be responsible for paying under the plan, including the deductible, out-of-pocket limit, copays and co-insurance.

Fire Safety

This simple fire safety checklist can help ensure your home and family are protected from the threats of smoke, fire and carbon monoxide.

1) Install smoke alarms on every level and in every bedroom. Three out of every five home fire deaths result from fires in homes without smoke alarms or with no working smoke alarms, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). For maximum protection, install smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement.

2) Testing and maintaining alarms is key. Alarms should be tested regularly and replaced at least every 10 years. Help ensure your alarms remain in good, working order by changing the batteries at least every six months. 3) Equip your home with fire extinguishers.

Beyond alarms, having fire extinguishers - and knowing how to use them - is an important part of maintaining a safe home for you and your family. Every 24 seconds, a fire department responds to a fire, according to the NFPA, so being prepared to fight small fires is critical.

Place extinguishers in convenient locations on every level of the home, in the kitchen and in the garage.

4) Protect against the “silent killer.” An odorless and invisible gas, CO is the number one cause of accidental poisoning and can only be detected with an alarm - yet only 47% of homeowners report owning a CO alarm. Consider hassle-free protection by installing 10-year sealed battery alarms and, just like smoke alarms, be sure to check all CO alarms regularly using the “test” button for continued protection.

5) Plan. Practice. Repeat. Recent consumer research reveals that less than 50% of homeowners have an escape plan - and even fewer practice a plan regularly. Make sure to involve everyone in your household in creating a plan and practice it at least twice every year. Is It Candy?

Halloween is an important time to make sure parents are not being tricked by their teens on what is a typical piece of candy and what is infused with pot. It is also important to educate parents that even the most common over-thecounter drugs might be confused for candy by younger children.

According to Southwest Behavioral & Health Services Vice President of Community Services Ed McClelland, “It may seem obvious that you don’t want your young child to accidentally ingest any medications that aren’t meant for him or her but safe storage and extra caution with medications around your house — and any other place your children spend time — goes a long way toward keeping little ones safe.”

Tips for keeping medication away from children: • Keep medications out of your children’s reach or in a locked medicine cabinet.

• Don’t leave medications out on the counter.

• Keep your medications in their original containers, with labels intact.

• Remember to securely close the childproof safety cap each time you use any medication.

• Don’t leave your next dose out on the table or counter as a reminder to take it later • Properly dispose of any unused or expired medications.

• Never refer to any medications as “candy” or a treat.

Bottom line: Be prepared.

• Be vigilant about safety issues with any prescription or over-the-counter medications you have at home, and be aware of what to do in an emergency situation if you suspect that a child has ingested something poisonous.

• Stay calm.

• Quickly try and determine what the child has ingested.

• If victim is awake and alert, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 .

• If the victim is unresponsive, has collapsed or is not breathing call 911 immediately • If the child has swallowed something, take it away from them but do not induce vomiting.

• Do not use syrup of ipecac.

The Bug Guy Arizona Desert Tarantula In spite, of its reputation, the tarantula is a relatively docile creature. Some find them beautiful and fascinating spiders and even make them pets. Others are frozen with fear at the mere sight of one.

You would really have to harass a tarantula to provoke it to bite. Its venom is weak making its bite harmless to people. So there is not much to fear of this hairy arachnid.

The Arizona tarantula which is also known as the “desert tarantula”, “western tarantula” and “Arizona blonde tarantula”, is mostly harmless to humans. Now if you were a scorpion or a cockroach, you may have reason for concern because its venomous bite will overcome most insects and some small rodents. We have seen an increase is sightings of tarantulas this year.

The Arizona species reach a body size of about 3 to 4 inches. She is a bit bigger and stockier than he is. She is a lighter shade of browns and tans while he is thinner with more black hair covering his body with reddish color hair on his abdomen. Besides having enough venom to subdue its prey, they also have some

“urticating” hairs on their backs. They are tipped with pointed pointing barbs. When contact is made by a predator, these hairs penetrate the attacker. Because the tips a barbed, hard to remove and are at minimum an irritant, some predators will instinctively try to avoid the tarantula.

Diet, Prey, Predators and Habitat The Arizona tarantula is a nocturnal hunter. They feed upon grasshoppers, scorpions, smaller spiders, little lizards and arthropods. Their enemies and predators include larger lizards, snakes, birds and large animals like foxes and coyotes.

Although the venom of the tarantula is relatively weak, it is strong enough to kill it typical prey.

Like most spiders, the tarantula has no teeth.

Their venom not only kills its prey, it serves the purpose of digesting by liquefying its prey. Since it cannot chew, it sucks-up its liquefied meal.

The tarantula primarily lives in the desert areas but can exist in almost all areas of Arizona. They build deep burrows in conducive soil and line the opening with silk webbing to help prevent “cave-ins”. The webbing often catches its prey, permitting it to skip a night of hunting. If the proper soil is not available, they will burrow into rocks, logs and sometimes cactus. They do not venture too far away from their burrows, but the male will become more adventurous during the mating season which is generally June, July and September. During the winter months, they go into an inactive state of semi-hibernation. They will plug-up their burrows with dirt and small rocks to help prevent invasion by its predators. They survive during the winter on stored fat reserves.
