From Me To You...

I have found that as we get older it is hard to lose weight and sadly even easier to gain it. We also tend to gain it in more unhealthy areas - did you know that if you hold onto weight in their stomach you are more likely to have heart problems, diabetes and cancer?

So my husband and I decided that we were going to head this situation off at the pass, so to speak.

We bought the shakes and used the step trackers but the weight was not really shifting. There was a funny quote on the internet that sums up my problem. It goes something like this: “Diet: Breakfast - 2 egg whites, Lunch - Caesar Salad, dressing on the side, Snack - cheese crisps, Dinner - large pizza, family size bag of Dorritos, gallon of vanilla Ice cream.” That was becoming more and more like my daily routine. I was chock full of good intentions until I sat down at night to watch tv and boom, I ate everything I could grab.

Realizing that we needed help we brought in a professional who would keep us accountable.

Not only does he train us twice a week, he also

helps with food choices and motivation. I am not a happy exerciser. I don’t like to sweat, or even move too much to be honest, and Ben is great at making it ... fun? Yes I can admit that exercise can be fun. We play games and laugh and sweat.

A lot.

Now on to the most annoying part of this experience. We do the same exercises, eat healthy food and limit our calories. My husband has lost over 10 pounds in three or so weeks and I can see he is becoming more healthy.

Me? I have gained weight. I know that muscle weighs more than fat and I think I am losing inches but it is quite demoralizing to see the fat melt off someone else and not experience that myself. We had all our measurements taken before we started this and I am holding on to the idea of seeing those numbers go down when we get measured again in a few weeks. I do feel stronger and that was one of my goals so I guess I am getting something out of this. I just have to stay away from the pint of vanilla ice cream stashed under the broccoli in the freezer.

Volunteer!

Volunteer with Cougar Community Volunteers!

The year is off to a good start at Estrella Mountain Elementary & Junior High IB Academy, and Cougar Community Volunteers (CCV) is looking for volunteers and vendors.

The group needs volunteers to help at school for as little as 30 minutes per week. For people who want to work directly with students, there are projects where volunteers work with individual elementary students on literacy and math skills. There are also opportunities to work in classrooms with small groups of students.

For those who are not “classroom types�, there are opportunities to help out at lunch & recess, or at specific posts before or after school to make sure that young people are safe as they enter and leave campus.

Volunteers who help during the school day must attend an orientation and get finger printed, courtesy of Liberty Elementary School District.

Cougar Community volunteers will host a community event, Winter Wonderland Vendor Fair & Art Show, on Friday December 7. The event will feature a variety of vendors as well as an art show for students who are in Kindergarten through 12th grade. For vendors, the entry fee is truly a bargain. Vendors will pay either $10 or $20, depending on whether or not CCV supplies a table for their booth. There is no entry fee for student artists. Cougar Community Volunteers is also seeking volunteers to assist at one-time events like the December Winter Wonderland event on December 7, 2018 and a Science Olympiad Regional competition of about 300 students and their advisors on February 23, 2019.

The money that CCV earns from the two special events will help pay for after-school tutoring by teachers.

Goodyear 411 Goodyear Citizens Police Academy, Bringing Together A Community As a resident of the City of Goodyear for the last 15 years I can truly say, I am a proud resident.

What would make any resident say that? Well, number one on my list was the safety and well being of my family. Second was the cleanliness of the city, and third was the sense of community that pulls together in time of need and always with a smile.

While being a resident, I have learned the importance of police-community partnerships and citizen involvement. The Goodyear Citizens Police Academy is a 10-week, 30-hour course designed to take the citizen on a behind the scenes look at the everyday operations of the Goodyear Police Department. The course includes operations, 9-1-1 communications, patrol procedures, traffic enforcement, drug unit, criminal investigation, K-9, special assignment, use of force encounters, NET, narcotics and gangs and an eight hour ride along.

My ride along experience was outstanding with six traffic stops, and two disturbance calls.

The highlight for me as a professional DJ was a disturbance call at 5:00 PM from a woman complaining that her husband was trying to sleep, but the neighbor had the music so loud that it rattled her windows and her husband could not sleep. After the call was over the officer and

I discussed the matter at hand, and I said to him, how great is this for me as a DJ when a disturbance call was, “All About That Bass, No Treble!”

There are so many details to cover in the Citizens’ Police Academy, that is why 30 hours are needed to graduate and to better understand what the officers do day to day. Overall, I would highly recommend the Goodyear Citizens’ Police Academy. The Goodyear Police Department has made great strides with this program and has become the model for other police departments across the country.

What I personally took away from this program was that behind the uniform and the badges the officers carry, they are human beings who took an oath to protect and defend our city and its citizens. In a nutshell, there are simply bad people who want to cause trouble and have no regard for personal property or respect for others. This is not acceptable to the residents of Goodyear and we are simply sending a message to criminals you are not welcome in our community. The bottom line is these officers are mothers, fathers, husbands or wives, parents and or grandparents too, just like us. They are normal, they are friendly and they care about you and I the citizens and residents of Goodyear.

My thanks go out to Chief Jerry Geier and the Goodyear Police Department who took the time to share with us this tremendous program and educating us about the day to day operations of keeping our city safe.

Healthy Eating How to Make Your Lunches go from BLAH to TaDa! Tip #1: Plan ahead for the week.

Turn your Sunday into a lunch-planning day for the week, rather than be in a scramble every morning wondering what to pack for the day.

Use divided bento-style lunch containers to prepackage lunches for the week, making them go from the fridge to a lunch bag in a snap. Prepare bulk foods to add variety, such as rice, quinoa, grilled chicken and beans.

Tip #2: Involve your kids.

Invite your children to help shop for groceries and teach them the importance of healthy eating. If you take your children with you when you shop, encourage them to choose produce of a certain color – it’s a great lesson in color identification, too! When it’s time to pack lunches for the week, bring out healthy fruits and veggies, and get your kids to be part of the assembly, choosing healthy foods that they’d like to eat. When you allow your children to participate in the food preparation process, making it fun and encouraging them along the way, the finished product is something they’re proud of and more willing to eat.

Tip #3: Ditch the PB&J. Variety is key. Go beyond a typical PB&J sandwich by creating a healthy lunchable with nitrate-free lunchmeat, cheese, yogurt, veggies, crackers and mustard. Assemble a smorgasbord of lighter snacks, including hard-boiled eggs, dried fruit and air-popped corn. Change up your sandwich by wrapping it with a whole-wheat tortilla, mini corn tortillas (kid-size!), lettuce or even collard greens!

Put some in a gluten-free tortilla and add prewashed veggies and avocado.

Tip #5: Make veggies go undercover.

Veggies often come back home as the lone occupants of a child’s lunchbox. Put these vitamin-packed powerhouses back in demand by asking kids to choose from two or three options.

Jam-pack veggies into sauces that can be used for pizza or pasta. Put excitement back into vegetables by using cute cutters and stringing carrots, peppers and cucumbers onto a skewer.

It’s amazing when they find out some of their favorite meals have veggie ingredients they don’t see.

Tip #6: Stretch your budget.

Did you know that just by packing your lunch, you’ll save anywhere from $1,500 to $2,400 year? Healthy, fun lunches don’t need to cost a fortune. Shop the weekly ad, use your Thank You Card and Bashas’ Personal Thank You program, which customizes special deals for you based on what you purchase regularly. Buy bulk when you can for healthy and delicious items, including rice, nuts and dried fruit. Get creative with old standbys such as tuna, which can be doctored up with celery, relish, crunchy veggies, fresh herbs and more. Money Matters We’re officially in autumn when we bring in what we planted in the spring. But the concept of planting and gathering isn’t confined to agriculture. In fact, it can be used in investing. So what can you do to help work toward a successful investment “harvest”?

Plant the right “seeds.” When farmers plant crops, they know what to expect When you invest, you too need to plant “seeds” by choosing investments that are designed to help meet your goals. For example, to accumulate enough money for a comfortable retirement, you will probably need to own a reasonable percentage of growthoriented vehicles, such as stocks.

Nurture your “crops.” If you want to keep your investment portfolio healthy, you also must find ways to nurture it. First of all, you will need to keep adding new dollars regularly, but you might

also need to do some “weeding” of your own, because over the years, you may have purchased some investments that, for one reason or another, are now no longer suitable for your needs. As an investor, you, too, need to diversify, because if you only own one type of asset class, and a financial downturn hits that asset, your portfolio can take a big hit. Spreading your dollars among stocks, bonds, cash and other investments can help reduce the impact of market volatility.

Let’s not be distracted by texting, or anything when driving. It only takes a split second to make a mistake that can last a lifetime.

Furry Friends As you’re filling the candy buckets and assembling the perfect costumes, be sure to heed these tips from the experts at PetSmart for a Halloween filled with pet-friendly fun:

Out and about Make sure pets have proper identification by microchipping and registering your pet’s microchip, and keeping identification and registration tags on their collars. This is especially important around Halloween, when open doors offer more opportunity for escape. If your pet will be joining the family while trick-or-treating, be sure they are visible to motorists by using a reflective collar, harness or leash.

Costume concerns Just like with children, there are safety issues to consider when costuming your pets. Not all dogs like wearing clothes and some may become stressed or agitated while wearing a costume.

However, many dogs just need a little coaxing and positive reinforcement.

Keep the Halloween fun going by establishing some rules for your family and any guests joining the festivities: * Xylitol a sugar substitute found in candy, gum, mints and baked goods can be extremely dangerous to pets, even in small amounts. Just 1/8 teaspoon can cause dangerously low blood sugar in dogs and 1/2 teaspoon can cause liver damage. If xylitol is consumed by your pet, take him or her to a veterinarian immediately. * Natural stimulants in chocolate can cause a range of symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea and abnormal heart rhythm. * Raisins may cause a toxic reaction in dogs from vomiting to kidney failure. * Cellophane, plastic and paper from candy wrappers and lollipop sticks can cause gastrointestinal upset. * As an alternative to sharing dangerous snacks, stock up on some seasonal dog-friendly treats and set out a pet-specific bowl.

Goodyear PD Shredathon On Saturday, October 13, 2018, in an effort to protect our

community members from identity theft, Goodyear Police Department will host a FREE Shred-a-Thon Event.

We invite the community to come out with a limit of 4 paper size boxes of paper items to be shredded. Please no plastic, metal, electronics, or cardboard. Please don’t forget to bring your patience, as the wait can be a little long, but well worth it! We do guarantee that we will work hard to process every vehicle as quickly as possible.

This free event will be held at the Goodyear Police Operations building located at 11 N. 145th Ave, and is open to Goodyear residents with proof of residency. We look forward to seeing you!

Police Department members, including the Goodyear Traffic Unit, the Community Services Unit, Police administrative staff, Police Explorers, VIPS, and ProShred, will be on-site working diligently to process vehicles over the course of the 4 hour event, scheduled from 7am -11am.

In addition to protecting the identity of our Goodyear residents who chose to participate, we are hopeful that we will save numerous trees, thousands of gallons of oil and water, as well as thousands of kilowatt hours of energy and landfill space.

What quote motivates you the most? We as humans are aspirational by nature and many quotes appeal directly to our nature, helping us see something in ourselves we want to change.

Quotes serve as a reminder about who we want to become.

We have what we call thought habits; habitual ways of thinking that allows us to either talk ourselves into opportunities or out of opportunities on a daily basis. Thought habits also impact whether one’s thinking is mostly positive or negative. The words of Henry Ford, “Think you can or think you can’t, either way you will be right,” became an important mantra for life that instilled confidence within me, especially when trying new things.

A quote by W. Clement Stone, “To every disadvantage there is a corresponding advantage. Find it!” became an important belief and driving force in my life. Maybe I saw the “find it” as more of a challenge. No matter the reason why, I am grateful that this quote has become an important part of my life.

When I heard Tony Robbins say, “Success leaves clues,” my realization was that there was no need to reinvent the wheel. Learn from the masters. Take what you learn and use it to go further, faster and easier through life.

Here’s an idea for success. It is what I call setting up the game to win. Where is the first place you go to when you get out of bed in the morning and the last place you go to at night before going to bed? Put a book of quotes in that room and read one or two quotes to start and end your day. Do this daily for 30 consecutive days (keyword consecutive). I must caution you: this will turn into a daily habit and an easy way to begin changing or reinforcing your thought habits.

Got kids? Imagine if this became one of their daily habits for success…such as a daily breakfast and bedtime routine. As we say in parenting for prevention and success; start early and often.

Now is a perfect time to start.

The school year has begun, and while the backto-school expenses of many parents are done for the summer, students will still have ongoing needs throughout the year.
