& hot tub, fitness center, equestrian center, the family center and so much more awaits. We strive to provide multiple avenues of entertainment for all members of the family whether that’s a cocktail on the back patio overlooking the 18th hole on the Tower course or spending the afternoon at the catch and release trout pond trying to reel in the “big one!” As I tell many people I speak with during their time in the White Mountains, if you’re bored here, you’re not looking hard enough to find things to do. In addition to what Torreon has to offer, the White Mountains offer just as much promise of a day well spent. Hiking, biking, fishing, boating, paddle boarding, hunting and miles and miles of forest roads to be traversed via UTV, ATV, horseback or otherwise are ready for you to explore. The pure beauty of the area alone drops the heart rate and allows a few deeper breaths as you let the hustle and bustle of city life slowly fade away.

Summer Recipe

We all know the summers at Torreon are full days of fun and the last question anyone wants to answer midafternoon is “what’s for dinner?” Well, here is a time tested and quick recipe that can allow any busy afternoon to turn into a nice, family dinner around the table. Steak Diane is an American dish of a panfried steak of your choice with a sauce made from the seasoned pan juices. This dish was generally prepared in restaurants tableside, and flambéed. In the 1950s and 1960s, it was considered a classic of “Continental cuisine.” Enjoy!

Two 6 to 8 ounce beef tenderloin Filets 2 tablespoon of butter 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1. Pat your steaks dry. In a mixing bowl combine your Beef Broth, Dijon Mustard and Worcestershire; whisk well and set aside. 2. Melt butter in skillet over medium-high heat. Salt and pepper both sides of your steaks. Turn the heat up to high and sear the meat for 1 to 3 minutes on either side. 3. Set steaks aside. If you prefer a more done steak, you can place them in the oven to bring to temperature. Add shallots and garlic to pan sautéing for one minute and then add mushrooms, stirring frequently over the next 3 to 5 minutes.

James Hildebrand Director of Food & Beverage, Torreon Golf Club You will need the following: 1/2 cup of beef broth or ¼ cup demi glaze 1 ounce minced garlic 1 ounce minced shallots 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 4 tablespoons Cognac or Brandy 6 tablespoons of Heavy Cream Salt & Pepper ¼ cup chopped shitake or cremini mushrooms

4. Deglaze the pan with cognac and cook until cognac is almost evaporated. 5. Add the broth mixture and boil for 1 to 2 minutes until thickened. Next, add the heavy cream and reduce again. 6. Finally serve over your filets with starch of your choice.

Golf Tips

Good Alignment for Great Golf Shots While I love to hike, I don’t love hiking to find my golf ball in the trees. One of the most important factors in staying out of the trees is proper alignment.

I like to keep it simple by picking a spot between the ball and the target to align my clubface. I then pick an object in the distance that is left of my target to align my shoulders.

Estrella Publishing - Torreon Living Magazine

The picture shows the target on the green indicated by the yellow flag, notice how my clubface is pointed directly at the divot in the turf which is between the ball and the flag. This insures my club is correctly aimed. I then look down my shoulder line to the tree left of the target as shown by the orange line. Now that I am properly aligned I can “pull the trigger” and watch the ball fly at the pin. Use this tip to help you have more fun playing at Torreon! For further instruction you are always welcome to contact myself or any of the other golf professionals in the golf shop. We look forward to seeing you more on the course and less in the trees! Protect Your Nest A Vacant Home is a Vulnerable Home

If you own a home, you know that there are periods of time when your home will be unoccupied, typically when you leave for a family vacation. However, if you have a second home, that property may be unoccupied for much longer periods of time, maybe as much as a several months. Simply locking the door and relying on a busy neighbor to check on your home from time to time is not the best way protect your investment. Quite frankly, it could lead to serious damage to or loss of your home as a result of storms, fire, theft or pests. Before leaving your property vacant, there are a number of precautions you can take to protect your home. One of the easiest solutions is to hire a professional home watch service. There are a number of scenarios that can lead to property damage. Below are the three most common issues. 1. Storm Damage Storms can produce heavy rain and strong winds that can damage your home. Strong winds can result in flying objects and downed tree branches damaging windows and roofs. Flooding can result in serious property damage and loss of precious belongings. Often, as a result of storms, small problems turn into catastrophic disasters. For example, a small roof leak can become a major source of damage in a short period of time. While not all storm damage can be avoided, there are many steps that can be taken to prevent or minimize damage.

2. Faulty Electrical Systems and Failed Appliances

Imagine leaving your home for a few weeks in the summer. You lock up and are on your merry way, but unknown to you, the air conditioner stops working during your time away and you come back to a rancid smelling, damaged home. Faulty or old wiring can lead to fires. Power surges can cause appliances to fail resulting in problems ranging from flooding to home security systems going down. 3. Pest Intrusion and Infestation Pest intrusions are a common problem. Being close to nature can have many advantages, but pests are definitely one of its major challenges. If your home is not properly secured when unattended, these animals can find their way into your home and take up residence. If they start breeding, their populations will grow and the problem can become quite costly to contain. Having a home watch professional on duty can mean the difference between detecting a problem early and avoiding damage entirely, or taking the risk of leaving your home unprotected.

We strive to save you time by combining our use of Rooong, Raingutters, Siding and Custom Garage Door knowledge, the highest quality parts and equipment, and our dedication to delivering exceptional service. We will not leave the job until it is nished and le you are satissed.

This Arizona State operated recreation area sits at 6300 feet elevation and boasts peaceful sunrises, bustling activities during the day, and a spectacular show of colors reflecting off the water during the evening sunsets. Away from the noise, the hustle, and the responsibilities is what can be found at this quaint lake.

Be Bear Aware A MESSAGE FROM THE TORREON COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION MANAGEMENT Bear Alert – 2019 The Arizona Department of Game and Fish Department recommends all residents keep all garbage cans inside enclosures such as your garage until trash pickup day which is Monday. Leaving garbage out over night is an invitation for bears to roam throughout Torreon. Many garbage cans have been turned over with garbage scattered all over the street in past summers. The burden of cleaning this mess up is on your Association.

If you do encounter a bear remember these steps: 1. Alter your route to avoid a bear in the distance. 2. Make yourself as large and imposing as possible, such as spreading out your jacket like a set of wings.

3. If the bear continues to approach, stand upright and wave your arms, jacket or other items. 4. Make loud noises, such as yelling, whistles, and banging pots and pans. 5. Do not run, that could cause the bear to chase and catch you. 6. Never play dead. 7. Give the bear a chance to leave the area. 8. If the bear does not leave, stay calm, continue facing it, and slowly back away. 9. If a black bear attacks, fight back with everything in your power – fists, sticks, rocks and E.P.A. registered bear pepper spray. 10. If a bear is in your yard or neighborhood, immediately contact the Arizona Game & Fish Department at (928) 367-4281. In an emergency, dial 911.

Feed your pets inside or remove uneaten pet food between feedings. Remove other inviting food sources, such as birdseed, hummingbird feed and fruit from trees. Clean barbecues and store in a secure area. The Torreon Community is located in black bear country, take responsibility for not attracting them. We can all contribute to making Torreon a cleaner, safer community by following these simple steps. Never intentionally feed wildlife. Feeding wildlife places the animals, you & others at risk!

Local Attractions Welcome to the Show Low Historical Society Museum, a community oriented museum.

The museum is comprised of two buildings. The west wing was originally a sporting goods store built in early 1960’s, and in use until the City of Show Low purchased the building in the early 1970’s for their police department and city hall. In 1994 the Show Low Historical Society acquired the building for use as a museum, with a labor of love attitude, the rooms were created, and the museum opened in 1995. The east wing was Navajo County Justice Court and Planning & Zoning department. In 2007 the museum acquired the east wing. With this expansion the museum now consists of 17 different themed rooms totaling over 6,000 square feet of display area for exhibits. Silver Creek Railroaders Club and the museum have a gentlemen’s partnership with the creation of “The Last Train to Maverick” railroad exhibit on a HO scale. This exhibit began in 2008 and is housed in the old court room of the museum. The exhibit continues to grow with each new season. All of our individual rooms have their own unique story to tell. To name a few: pioneer families, Black Smith Shop, Artifact Gallery, Post Office, Military Memorial, Show Low’s early businesses, Ranchers Hall of Fame, and the jail. We left the police department holding jail cell as it was when the police department relocated in 1994. Our visitors are fascinated by the contents of this exhibit, and just maybe you will feel our resident ghost as he observes from the other side. The Show Low Museum is host to community clubs, Creative Crafters on Wednesday mornings, and the Regal Wood Carvers on 16 Estrella Publishing - Torreon Living Magazine
