From Me To You...

I celebrated a milestone birthday this month and perhaps that is why I am musing on the subject of time. By all intents and purposes I am now middle aged. Wow, how did that happen? My parents were old when they hit this birthday, heck they were old 10 years before this birthday! And here I am, feeling the healthiest I think I have ever felt, more secure in myself as a person in my personal life, my marriage and my friendships. And yet. I have this label. There is a theory in Sociology that is called the Self-Labelling Prophesy. Basically it posits that if you name someone in a certain way then that person will live up to the moniker you give them. The Smart Kid will achieve more success academically, The Bad Seed will feel like there is no point in trying and will continue to act out, The Bad Dog will continue to chew your baseboards and jump on the furniture. And The Middle Aged Woman will get ready for Estrella Publishing - Torreon Living Magazine

That is a phrase we are hearing a lot recently. It is apt though. We all could do with stopping and appreciating the now. Look around at your life and see what you have achieved already. What is good in your day? Whether it is as big as buying a new house or as small as checking off an item on your to-do list. Savor it. Enjoy the victories and don’t let time drag you along in its wake. Until next time...

It’s A Grand Life

Now it is very different. I spent months planning a trip this year. Coordinating schedules with the friends we were travelling with, finding and booking the best place to stay, organizing the things that needed to be taken care of here while we were gone. Then suddenly we were in the car, driving to our destination. The vacation itself flew by and we were home! Blink. Now I am submerged in my life again, that takes no time at all by the way, and looking ahead to other events.

I have not even begun to do everything I am capable of and want to do. I just have to get to retirement so I have the time to do some of those things! And there it is again. Rushing towards something to be able to do the thing I think I can’t do yet. I need to slow down and be in the moment.

TTee Living

Time is a funny thing. For many years time seemed to go so slowly. Every day lasted an eternity and there was little to distinguish one day from another. I measured my life in seasons or school and no school. Admittedly I was raising four children under 10 and wrangling my life in a new state, but still... I guess it is true that when you have small children the days are long and the years are short. I look back at that time in my life and remember just getting through the day.

retirement and take up knitting. I don’t think I will go down that way. I already know how to knit and honestly it is not for me.

Golf Tips

The Most Important Rule - Have Fun One of my favorite sayings to people when they leave the golf shop is “Have Fun!”. I get varied responses, everything from “How could you not have fun?” to “It’s golf, it’s not supposed to be fun.”. This month I’m going to take a break from the technical side of golf instruction and give you some tips on how to have more fun on the course. Know Why You Play Golf Knowing why you play golf is a big key to having more fun. Many times people get caught up in the rules, etiquette and challenge of golf without knowing why it is they play. Exercise, competition, socializing and the challenge of golf are all reasons some play. When you know “why” you play, you can set goals that are important to you and find others that play for similar reasons.

Now you’ve got your purpose and can find others with similar “whys” which can become your “golf tribe”, people that may become lifelong friends with common interests in golf or life. Set a New Par Par on both of the courses is 72. This was established 20 years ago by Robert Von Hagge and his associates when designing the facility. While shooting a score of 72 might be the expectation of a select few, it is a distant dream for 99% of those that play golf. I recently redefined my “Par” when I play to be: 1. Have a really good laugh while I’m on the course, regardless of who I’m playing with. 2. Notice something really cool in the natural surroundings. It can be as small as a rock that has some great colors in it, or the way the sunset has colored the sky. 3. Curve the ball how I want to curve it, whether it is where I want it to end up or not. Play the course the way you want to play it

“Tee it up wherever you want”, “Skip a hole, that gives you trouble”, “Play a tee two tees up from where you normally would play”, are all phrases that may make an avid golfer cringe. But these are all things that just might help you to have more fun. Certainly, we don’t want you to hurt yourself or someone else or damage the course or surroundings. But feel free to play how you want to play. “Foot wedge” out of the deep rough, no problem. Play the Juniper tees on the Cabin course. Why Not? Most often people are play golf to recreate and escape the daily grind of work and other stressors. So why not play the course in the way that is the most enjoyable rather than the most challenging. If you need help having more fun on the course, feel free to call or stop by the golf shop for some ideas. We look forward to seeing you soon!

October Recipe

As we dig deeper into fall, this month’s recipe is another one of my favorites, loaded baked potato soup. The comfort and coziness of this soup makes those cold October days feel so much warmer. This recipe yields approximately 4 servings, takes 10 minutes of prep and 30 minutes of cook time. INGREDIENTS 4 slices of bacon (diced) 5 tablespoons unsalted butter ¼ cup all purpose flour 3 ½ cups milk (or more as needed) 3 russet potatoes, peeled and cubed 2 green onions, thinly sliced 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese ½ cup sour cream Kosher salt and black pepper to taste DIRECTIONS Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add bacon and cook until brown and crispy, roughly 6-8 minutes. When done, transfer to a paper towel lined plate and set the bacon aside.

Melt butter in a large stockpot over medium heat. Whisk in flour until lightly browned, about 1 minute. Slowly whisk in milk and cook, whisking constantly, until slightly thickened. This should be about 2 minutes. Stir in the potatoes and green onions. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to a simmer until potatoes are tender which should be about 1520 minutes. Stir in the cheese and sour cream and salt and pepper to taste. If the soup is too thick you can add more milk until the desired consistency is reached. Serve immediately and I garnish with green onion, cheese, bacon and a dollop of sour cream.

Won’t You Be My Neighbor? It’s easy to see the value of living in caring neighborhoods and being good neighbors. Interested in becoming a better inhabitant of your own neighborhood? Consider these suggestions aimed at promoting a kinder, friendlier environment. 1) Introduce yourself. Take the first step. Instead of avoiding contact when in your yard or out for a walk, shake hands, say hi and make an effort to remember people’s names. Even when inperson contact is brief, it can go a long way toward helping people feel connected and more like friends than strangers. 2) Take new neighbors housewarming gifts. Make newcomers feel wanted and welcome by acknowledging their arrival with a thoughtful gift 3) Give new families contact info for neighbors and neighborhood amenities. Include phone numbers for emergency services, doctors’ offices, dentists, schools, babysitters, entertainment

options, sources of great takeout food, dry cleaners and any other assets you think may be helpful. People will appreciate your insider view into local amenities, and they’ll be more likely to communicate key information to others if their contact info is readily available. 4) Organize a neighborhood event. It could be as simple as a front-porch open house or as strategically planned as a neighborhood cleanup, but any gathering that brings people together to socialize is bound to create goodwill and a friendlier neighborhood vibe. 5) Stay aware of who needs help. When possible, organize meal delivery, dog walking, transportation or other assistance for neighbors going through tough times. Teaming up to help others may make your neighbors feel more connected, and people on the receiving end of such kindness tend to pay it forward. 6) Live by the golden rule. Treat your neighbors as you would like to be treated. Clean up after pets and kids, drive through at reasonable speeds, don’t be overly loud, mow at reasonable hours, return anything you’ve borrowed and generally stay aware of how you’re coming across to others. It feels good to live in a neighborhood that feels more like a community than an anonymous collection of strangers. Consider how you can take the initiative to create warmth and peace within your own neighborhood.

Wildfire Prep

Wildfires and other disasters can be challenging because you rarely get enough warning to develop a plan to protect your family and minimize property damage, much less execute that plan. Thinking ahead can make all the difference - increasing your family’s personal protection and minimizing property damage and financial impact.

Four steps that can help: * Prepare your family, whether you are at home or traveling: * Establish a family communication and evacuation plan that includes a remote meeting place in case you’re separated * Stock an emergency kit with essentials and must-haves. * Sign up your primary phone for Reverse 911 notifications so you can receive up-to-the-minute catastrophe bulletins and instructions. Contact your local police or fire department to inquire whether the service is available in your area.

14 Estrella Publishing - Torreon Living Magazine

Protect your finances: * Review your insurance policies annually (or more frequently when major life changes occur) to ensure you have the right type and amount of coverage. * Establish an emergency fund. Try for three to six months of living expenses, if possible. * Store important documents on a secure Internet site or in a safe-deposit box that requires an ID and key. Ready your home: * Create a fire-free zone by trimming branches near the structure. Also clear leaves, debris and dead trees, and keep your grass mowed. * Properly store flammable materials and fuels. Access community help: * Join or form a Firewise Community Program in your neighborhood. * Get involved in community wildfire mitigation projects. For more information on preparing for wildfires, visit USAA.com/WildfireHelp.

Medicare Enrollment Medicare Open Enrollment is about to kick off. For most people already enrolled in Medicare, the annual Open Enrollment period (Oct. 15 through Dec. 7) is the only opportunity to make changes to your existing Medicare coverage. During Medicare Open Enrollment, Medicare beneficiaries can switch Part D prescription drug plans; switch Medicare Advantage plans; switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage; or switch from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare. Dan Klein, president and CEO of the Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation, offers the following tips for navigating Medicare Open Enrollment. 1. Do your homework Changes to your health status, doctors or other healthcare providers, prescription drugs or budget may mean that your current plan is no longer the most cost-effective choice for you. 2. Make sure your doctors and providers are in-network If you visit a doctor, hospital or pharmacy that is

outside of the network, you will likely have to pay more. 3. Make sure your medications are covered It’s important to ensure that your plan covers the medications you need and that the plan’s network of pharmacies makes it convenient for you to access your drugs. 4. Assess if your plan is still a good fit for your budget When selecting a plan, you should consider what you will be responsible for paying under the plan, including the deductible, out-of-pocket limit, co-pays and co-insurance. 5. Determine how you will pay for your outof-pocket costs There may be assistance available to you if you cannot afford the out-of-pocket costs for your prescription medications. You should research your options now. You may qualify for a federal Medicare Low Income Subsidy to help pay for your prescription drug costs. You may also be eligible for a patient assistance program that provides people with financial assistance to cover out-of-pocket costs for their medical treatments. You can learn more by visiting PANFoundation.org. Other helpful online resources are available at:

Pinetop-Lakeside History Seasons of sun and snow rolled over the Mountain and no one was there to feel them. Mornings fluted with birdsongs and evenings croaked with frogsongs and no one heard. Winter sunsets, mauve and blue-pink hazed above the depths of forest, but no one saw them. Dawn raised wild turkeys to pick and scratch on grassy hillsides. Elk grazed in the moonlight and bugled challenges across the dank tules. Deer sipped water from the seeps and springs, ears turning in danger. But, no one killed them. Later, much later, when people came to the Mountain, Pueblo hunters from cities like Forestdale and Kinishba stalked game with atlatls and spears. Until about 1200 A.D., they planted crops, built masonry houses, made fine pottery, established a complex religion and government and traded with their neighbors. Then their life was forever disrupted by drought and perhaps, enemies. No one knows for sure when the nomadic bands of Athabaskans came down from the north and found the mountains to their liking and stayed. Recent evidence points to their migration into the area about 900-1,000 years ago. They gathered pinyons, acorns, and juniper berries...wild grapes and berries...roots and herbs. They were hunters and gatherers and raiders of settlements. They lived off the Mountain and took the drought with the rain, the blizzard with the sunshine. When Coronado with his cumbersome band trooped up from White River in 1540, they camped at springs on top of the Mountain 16 Estrella Publishing - Torreon Living Magazine

and lost some men to poison hemlock which grew there. He did not see the natives, and so assumed they were not there. His soldiers passed by on their Andalusian horses, searching for gold and glory, and left the Sierra Blanca as wild as they had found it. Much later, fur trappers came looking for beaver on the Mountain, but found the pelts inferior to those in the northern Rockies. They left no trace. Spanish colonists in Nuevo Mexico came to know the marauding bands of Athabaskans well. They called them Apaches de Navahu, from a Zuni word which meant “enemy. For more than 300 years, they and their cousins, the Navajos, effectively blocked the settlement of Northern Arizona, until it became an isolated island in the pattern of westward expansion. To protect trade routes and encourage settlement, the Army established an outpost at Camp Mogollon (later called Camp Apache, then Fort Apache) in 1869. One of the scouts hired to explore and survey the area was a frontiersman named Corydon E. Cooley who came to the area in 1870, found good grass and year round water, and decided to stay. Because of Cooley more than any other man, this region of Arizona was spared the bloodbath of the Indian Wars which took place elsewhere. He married two daughters of the White Mountain Apache chief, built a house in present day Show Low, and kept the peace with his in-laws. By 1878, Cooley and his partner, Henry Huning, were farming along Show Low Creek, had installed a sawmill, and were ranching on a large scale. October 2019

In the same year, William L. Penrod and his wife, Polly Ann Young, were called by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to help colonize Northern Arizona. They left Utah Oct. 26, 1878 with two yoke of oxen, a team of horses, their nine children and enough supplies to last six months. They arrived at the Willis Ranch on Show Low Creek December 31st. ON New Year’s Day, 1879, they awoke to three feet of snow. As soon as William could get through, he rode to a small Mormon colony in the Forestdale Valley. When he returned, he had made up his mind to go back to Utah. His wife, being in poor health, refused. So John Henry Willis hired them to take care of his ranch, and they stayed on. Cattle and sheepmen had already established herds on the open range of The White Mountains when the large influx of Mormons arrived. Among the ranchers will Will Amos, Bill Morgan, Jim Porter and George and Bob Scott. A military road called Crooks Trail was in use from Camp Verde to Camp Apache. Hay and grain were being freighted from the Rio Grande Valley, through St. Johns, to Camp Apache, and Col. Cooley’s sold local hay and produce to the fort. Cooley and Huning hired William Penrod to work for them, and for the next two years, Penrods lived on the ranch that was to become the townsite of Show Low. They operated a mule-powered shingle mill and sold shingles for $2.50 a thousand. Estrella Publishing - Torreon Living Magazine

Between Camp Apache and Show Low were open, park-life forests of yellow pine (Ponderosa) broken by a series of mountain meadows along the drainages of streams. In September of 1886, William Penrod moved his family to one of these meadows, near the top of the mountain pass before the trail dropped off to Camp Apache, to take up a homestead. The Penrods and their 14 children lived in their wagon box for ten days while William and his son, Ralph, cut logs and built a one-room cabin. In a 1950 interview with Norman Mead, Ralph Penrod said they could see smoke from the cabin of their only neighbor, Johnny Phipps (or Fipps). Phipps had been there for about a year when the Penrods arrived, according to Ralph Penrod. That would place the first date of Anglo settlement at 1885. Johnny Phipps made his living buying and selling produce and liquor and freighting throughout the mountains. Phipps was still selling apples and oranges to settlers in the 1890’s. Thelma Axline, who later owned the property the Phipps cabin was on, said he was buried in a willow grove in the meadow. The cabin burned down. His store and saloon were taken over by Walt Rigney when Phipps died. Rigney is the man generally believed to be responsible for the name “Pinetop.” “Pinetop” was the nickname given to Rigney by black soldiers who were then stationed at Fort Apache. According to Ralph Penrod, they used to say “Let’s go the the top of the pines and see Old Pinetop.” Rigney, said Penrod, had a fuzzy lock of red hair on top of his head. Some of the early settlers wanted to change the name of the town to Penrod, but there was already a Post Office by that name, so they kept the original name of Pinetop. Staying Active We can often be our own biggest hurdle when it comes to making healthy decisions. But sometimes all it takes is a gentle nudge from a friend or a fun new idea to spark your motivation. Here are simple ideas to help you live your best life and boost your mental and physical health. Staying active: Push-ups While the thought of doing push-ups might be intimidating, there are plenty of ways to make the exercise simpler while still gaining strength in your arms, chest and back. Try a modification on the classic push-up that could even be done on a secure countertop in the convenience of your home. 1. Place your hands on top of a countertop or other firm surface. Make sure to spread your fingers wide. 2. As you lower yourself toward your hands, keep your shoulder blades down and back. 3. Once you have gone as low as you can, come back up and repeat.

Fix-Ups For Fall With cooler days and temperate weather, fall is a good time to get outdoors and tackle some larger home projects, as well as prep your home for winter. “Cold weather can wreak havoc on your house, leaving you with a long list of repairs,” said Cathy McHugh, director, brand management at DAP. “It’s important to take preventative action now so you can enjoy the coming weather change, rather than making costly repairs later.” Don’t know where to start? Here are the top five “must-do” repairs from the experts at DAP. Refresh around windows and doors Temperature fluctuations and weather extremes can cause cracks and crumbling in sealants around windows and doors. The resulting gaps allow air to creep inside, putting your energy bills on overdrive. In addition, if current sealant has any dirt buildup, the hot and humid weather of summer can foster mold and mildew. Protect your home and give your windows and doors a refresh and waterproof seal that stands up to the elements by applying a new exterior sealant.

for surface damage issues caused by hail, wind and heavy rain. Common damage includes cracks in sidewalks and driveways, as well as chips in siding. Address problem areas like these with an exterior filler, which can fill in exposed, vulnerable areas and prevent further damage. To save time and money, choose a multipurpose filler designed specifically for exterior repairs.

Inspect your roof Start by making a simple visual inspection of your roof. Before hauling out the ladder, use binoculars or zoom in with a smartphone camera to spot obvious damage. If your roof has a relatively flat surface and you feel comfortable on a ladder, then go up for a closer look. Shingles that are cracked, buckled, loose or are missing granules need to be replaced. And of course, while you’re up there, be sure to clear any clogged gutters to prevent potential water damage. Prepare your furnace for fall Now is the time to prepare your furnace for fall. Change the filter, clean vents and remove any dirt or dust that has settled on the unit and connections. If you suspect problems, schedule a professional to check it out now - rather than wait until temperatures drop.

For more information to help tackle your to-do Repair imperfections and surface damage It’s important to take a walk around your property list, visit DAP.com and inspect your home and outdoor living areas 20 Estrella Publishing - Torreon Living Magazine
