From Me To You...

I am no longer allowed to throw balls in the house. Apparently my family is tired of dodging random missiles, picking up broken items and occasionally getting winged themselves. In fact as soon as I reach for a dog toy people duck for cover. I find it a little insulting to be honest.

My aim is not that bad, most of the damage is caused by rebounds and people walking into the line of fire. That is the line I am going with anyway.

It is amazing how many things I aim for in life and get a near miss, but it is not about the ones you miss. As I try to instill in my children, you learn more from failing than success. Sure success is more fun, but failing builds resilience, tenacity and drive. Learning that lesson young is preferable as it can be a hard lesson to learn as an adult.

He always knows the answer, always did. Then he went to high school and hit a wall. He stopped loving math and took a couple of years to come back to it. But he did, and pretty spectacularly at that, completing his college math before even starting his finance degree. He fell, figured out that if you fail at something you learn, pick yourself up and do it differently next time - and he learned it when he was young. That is a skill which makes him able to roll with the punches in his adult life.

Many people never learn that lesson, repeating their mistakes over and over again.

We all see the pizza joint that goes out of business only to be replaced by yet another pizza joint. There has to be a reason it is not successful in that location!

One of our children is good at math. I mean he just gets it. When I hear a problem that starts As for my pitching skills, I am not giving up just with “A train leaves the station at 10am...” my head starts to throb and the world fades to black. yet. Practice makes perfect is another phrase I am hanging on to - perhaps I should just take it outside for a while.

Online Scams Scammers are always cooking up creative new ways to separate people from their money.

The sad reality is that it often works. The latest schemes involve so-called “money flipping,” and it’s showing up in consumers’ newsfeeds on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and even via text messaging. Keep these things in mind when you see an enticing post or are randomly approached by someone about any form of money flipping or “get rich quick” schemes:

1. Trust your gut If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

You can ignore the testimonials with photos of big piles of cash, the fancy cars and the flashy jewels they displayed with captions of their “success” - scammers may tell you that they work for a money transmitter and have “tricks” on how to double your money. Cons claim they will keep a percentage of the profit as commission, but as soon as a victim sends the upfront investment money, they will unfriend or block you on social media, not answer texts or calls and disappear with your dough without a trace.

2. Don’t be fooled by a text from a “friend” Even if a text or SMS appears to be from someone you know, if someone’s asking you for money for any reason, you should think twice before taking action. If you really think it’s from a friend or a social media acquaintance, contact them directly by phone, via email or in person

to confirm the situation. Chances are that it’s really a hacker who is masquerading as someone you really know to try to convince you to take the bait.

3. Use your head Does it seem realistic that someone could turn your $200 into $2,000 by the end of the day?

If it were that easy, surely everyone would be doing it. If it doesn’t make sense to you, that’s because it’s nonsense. In this instance, there is no logical, legal way that such a scam could be effective and legitimate. Never let your emotions blind you to these facts. Even if it were possible to modify the amount of a transfer, it would be criminal to defraud a legitimate business by participating in this scheme. Never invest in something you don’t totally understand.

4. Remember that you don’t really know who you’re talking to.

Even if the person posting on social media or messaging you says that they work in the financial industry, or that they’ve successfully made wads of cash and are just sharing their good fortune out of the kindness of their heart, remember that you have no idea who that person really is, even if they insist they want to get you a good deal or help you get rich quick.

5. Never click any links or give out personal information Someone trying to scam you on Instagram or any other social media site will often lure you into a continuing conversation over text or SMS, then try to get you to click a link to a compromised site - or may even try to get you to reveal personal info like your bank account or Social Security number. Anyone asking you for your money or sensitive financial details is not a giver, they’re just a taker.

Celebrate A Teacher A recent survey commissioned by Staples found that three out of four Americans reported having had a favorite teacher, and over 83% said that a teacher had a meaningful impact on their life.

The survey also found that, since graduating, nearly one-third of respondents said they hadn’t thanked an important teacher, but wished they had.

1. Express yourself. Take a moment to write an email or handwritten note to express your appreciation for what they’ve done for you or your child. Include enough detail so they really know what they mean to you and your family.

3. Contribute.

Ready, Set, Prepare!

Arizona’s Monsoon season is here. These storms can be far more serious than many people realize. They are caused by air currents activated by temperature differences between the hot ground air and cooler atmosphere. A monsoon consists of heavy rain, high winds, blowing dust, lightening, and flooding.

Stay indoors and be sure and have the following items available for safety: coolers with ice, candles (matches or lighter), cell phones and chargers, batteries, battery powered radio and a dust mask. If you experience electrical problems or outage, call SRP at 602-236-8811.

AZ homes and buildings rely on electrical power to help keep indoor conditions acceptable to the people inside. Without electricity, controlling indoor temps. may be difficult or impossible, and if the ventilation system in the home or building doesn’t work without power, the amount of pollutants inside could increase. Carbon Monoxide Alarms will help track and maintain air quality without the use of electricity. This invisible, odorless gas can come from a variety of combustion appliances, like gas stoves, ovens or barbeque grills. CO can build up quickly and at elevated levels can cause significant harm. Every home should have CO alarms on each level outside each sleeping area.

Individuals should know ahead of time where you would run a generator. Place them outside well away from doors, windows, and vents. A generator should not be used inside the home as carbon monoxide can build up quickly and can linger.

Have a battery-powered radio to keep you informed and have access to a telephone in case of emergency.

If you are in a car during a monsoon, you should pull off to the side of the road or highway, keep seat belt secured and set your parking brakes.

Also, and this will sound counter- productive, but keep your headlights off. Keeping them on might indicate traffic to follow the light and crash into you.

Haboob is a fancy term for a giant dust storm.

Common in the desert during monsoon season, they can bring daily thunderstorms to the region.

Haboobs are formed by winds rushing outward from thunderstorms and can travel hundreds of miles, wreaking havoc, churning up dust. The dust storms form through a series of storm cells that intensify as they move. AZ weather cells merge in what appears to be a solid wall of dust.

Haboobs are cool to watch from afar but can be dramatic. Be safe and be prepared!

Unused Opioids Some things in your medicine cabinet are more dangerous than others. When it comes to prescription drugs, opioid pain medicines can be addictive and even deadly. Keeping unused prescription opioids is risky and can result in overdose and death in children, teens, and even pets. The Remove the Risk campaign from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides easy-to-follow steps that any adult can take to immediately remove unused prescription opioids from their homes and help save lives.

Prescription opioids are powerful painreducing medicines; they include oxycodone, hydrocodone, morphine, and others. Doctors prescribe opioids after surgeries and for injuries; however, these medicines can have serious risks if they are accidentally or intentionally misused.

Many people who misuse prescription opioids say that they got them from a friend or relative.

Curious kids and teens may explore medicines in your home and accidentally or intentionally take them. Prevent potential misuse by removing unused opioids from your home, especially if children or teens live with or visit you.

You can protect your family and be part of the solution to the opioid crisis by visiting www.

FDA.gov/DrugDisposal to find answers to these questions: 1. Is a medicine take-back option readily available? Medicine take-back options are the preferred way to dispose of most types of unneeded medicines safely, including opioids. Authorized locations may be in retail pharmacies, hospital or clinic pharmacies, and law enforcement facilities. Some authorized collection sites may also offer mail-back programs or “drop-boxes” to help people safely dispose of their unused medicines.

2. If not, is the medicine on the FDA “flush list”?

The FDA flush list tells you which medicines you should flush when they are no longer needed.

Medicines on this flush list may be especially harmful and, in some cases, fatal with just one dose if they are used by someone other than the person for whom they were prescribed.

3. Can you throw it away in household trash? If no medicine take-back option is available, and the medication is not on the FDA flush list, you can: * Mix medicines with an unappealing substance such as dirt, cat litter, or used coffee grounds; * Place the mixture in a container such as a sealed plastic bag; * Throw away the container in your trash at home; and * Remove all personal information on the prescription label of empty medicine bottles or medicine packaging, then trash or recycle the empty bottle or packaging.

For children, having an engaged dad makes a huge difference - fathers play a critical role, and research tells us just how important that role is. In fact, studies show that children who feel close to their fathers are two times more likely to go to college or find a job after high school How can you spend more meaningful time with your children?

Here are some simple ideas from the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and the Ad Council that can help you make a moment with your children: 1. Read to your children.

A bedtime story is a meaningful bonding activity that is not only fun and comforting for children, but dramatically increases their ability and interest in reading over the years. For older children, take turns reading chapters or pages aloud to each other, and enjoy making up funny voices for the characters.

4. Be a positive role model.

Share something that you love to do or care about with your children. Introduce them to a hobby you enjoy, take them to a park or other location you have an attachment to and share your memories with them.

Volunteer together for a cause that’s important to you. Show your children what you are passionate about in life, and they will learn a lot about you.

5. Dance like a dad.

Let yourself play and be silly together sometimes. Turn on your child’s favorite upbeat music and #DanceLikeADad with your kids.

Fathers are important to their children’s lives and well-being. Research shows children who feel close to their fathers do better in school and show higher self-esteem and empathy. Whether you live with your children or not, it’s the time you spend together and the memories you create that have made the biggest difference.

2. Stay connected.

Find ways to stay connected when you’re unable to see your child in person. Text often, video chat or call. Find creative ways to connect, like playing an online game together. Lastly, don’t forget the power of something you can hold in your hand - send an occasional handwritten letter or postcard your child can treasure.

3. Use errands as an opportunity to bond Fathers are less likely to take children to necessary appointments, such as dental and medical checkups. Making the effort to be the comforting presence during a possibly stressful appointment can really strengthen the bond with your child.
