From Me To You...

I have come to the conclusion that I live in a very interesting state. Why? Because nearly everyone here is a transplant. There are very few people born and bred in Arizona. It is a destination state - a place to retire to, certainly, but also a place where the real estate is affordable and the cost of living is comparatively low. A place people migrate to because of the weather at home and the weather here.

Personally I will never forget my last winter in NY when the wind chill had our temperature at minus 17 degrees Fahrenheit. As I shovelled the snow off our sidewalk at 9 months pregnant, (I did this because I discovered that I am liable for accidents happening on the sidewalk in front of our house!) I decided then and there that it would be my last year doing so.

So here we are in this sunny climate, separated form our extended family. I am used to this way of life, having immigrated from the UK at 21, but my husband and most people here are not. It leaves you with a feeling of being slightly adrift.

There is no anchor to stabilize you, or hold you back. Suddenly the question of “Whose house do we go to for Thanksgiving?” or “Why does Aunt Doris always get Passover/Easter?” becomes moot. Now we ask, “What do you want to do this holiday?” Or my favorite, “Where are we making reservations this year?” Sometimes we open our home to friends and family who are also without a destination, sometimes it is just us.

People no longer become my companion because our children are the same age, or do the same extracurricular activity. That is a similarity of circumstance and I have found that it is not a good indicator of folk who share your values and goals. Being in a group of people who live a different lifestyle is never comfortable.

So over time my circle has ebbed and flowed into a solid core of people I love. I can truly say that they are the family I choose, not the ones given to me, and I am content. Some of them have children and some do not. Some own their own businesses, some work for ‘the man’ and a lucky few have retired. The one thing they all have in common is me and I am thankful for them.

Last month a longtime friend who had moved out of state was visiting for my daughter’s wedding, and as she left something she said struck me profoundly. She said that she could see I was surrounded by people who cared for me and that she was glad. She could relax knowing that even though she was no longer around the corner, I had people who would, and did, step up to fill the void she left. Friends who always help when I need it, whether I ask or not. These friends have become my family and I am so grateful I have found them and they have found me.

The downside to the situation, I have found, is that there is no tribe who have to be there when you call. No sister-in-law who will grudgingly watch the kids if you have an emergency, or a gaggle of cousins for the kids to play with and grow up with and build family memories with.

That is a distinct disadvantage.

Kitchen Safety

Watch what you heat: 5 kitchen safety tips

Cooking equipment is the top cause of home fires, and the second leading cause of home fire deaths, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

“Considered to be one of the more preventable types of fires, kitchen fires can be avoided by following a few common-sense guidelines,” says Tarsila Wey, director of marketing at First Alert.

“Home safety experts recommend having at least one fire extinguishing product conveniently located in the kitchen, as well as on every level of the home and in the garage.”

Be prepared to fight the small flames by following the below tips to stay safe in the kitchen.

Properly equip your home. Keep your family and house safe by ensuring that functioning smoke alarms are installed throughout your home.

The NFPA recommends one alarm on every floor, including the basement, and inside every bedroom. In addition, install smoke alarms at least 10 feet from cooking appliances to minimize

false alarms. All alarms should be tested monthly, and for alarms without 10-year batteries, replace the batteries every six months.

Keep an eye on your food. Staying in the kitchen while cooking is key to preventing oven or stovetop fires. Whether you’re simmering, baking, boiling or roasting, check on your food regularly.

If you need a reminder that the oven or stove is on, just set a timer. Be aware that fires can happen fast, so if you must leave the kitchen even for a short period of time - turn off the stove.

Clean your appliances. Keep all your appliances clean of grease and food debris that could potentially cause a fire. Clear the toaster of crumbs and wipe down the stovetop as needed.

Ovens should be cleaned at least every three to six months.

Clear off kitchen countertops. Keep your countertops clean and clear of flammable objects. Move items such as pot holders, wooden utensils, plastic bags, food packaging and paper towels away from the stove, oven or any other kitchen device that generates heat.

Be prepared when disaster strikes. Over 70 percent of fire extinguisher owners say that they would not feel very comfortable actually operating one.

Women’s Health If you’re an American woman today, chances are your busy lifestyle is preventing you from seeking out the regular check-ups and screenings so important to maintaining your health. So reports a recent HealthiHer survey showing that only 66 percent of U.S. women ages 30 to 60 feel “somewhat in control” of their own health, although 83 percent are happily managing the health of their families. The study found that a full 77 percent of women in that age group say that their job schedules prevent them from attending regular check-ups.

“Women today wear many hats - they’re wives, mothers, caregivers, employees, business leaders and breadwinners, often at the same time,” says Wendy Lund, CEO of leading communications agency, GCI Health. “Even when it feels like there are not enough hours in the day, we somehow manage to integrate everything in our lives to ‘make it work’ and accomplish insurmountable tasks. And this constant juggling can come at the cost of our own health.”

The good news? The survey also reveals that 79 percent of respondents see positive change as achievable. If you’re among those struggling to take good care of yourself because of other obligations, consider how these suggestions might help. * Truth: You can’t help others without caring for yourself. You must maintain your own energy and well-being so you can stay around to be an effective mom, wife, daughter, sister and/or friend. * Take stress seriously. While not all stress is bad, long-term unrelieved stress can have major adverse effects on your health, reducing the effectiveness of your immune, digestive, sleep and reproductive systems. Recognize the risks, plan methods for fighting stress and carve out time for exercise, sleep, meditation, yoga and/or other remedies. * Try online resources. An annual in-person physical is always recommended, but health issues in between check-ups can often be taken care of through online sites that diagnose issues through questionnaires or video chats - then prescribe medicine or other therapies without need of a visit. * Make exercise a no-brainer. As the saying goes, sitting is the new smoking. If you don’t make daily movement of some sort a priority in your life you’re putting your physical and emotional health at substantial risk.

You’re 10 years or less away from retirement. You can clearly see the next phase of your life down the road and it’s coming up fast. Are you ready for it? If you’re not as prepared for retirement as you should be, you’re not alone. Here are the best tips, advice and tactics for retirement planning from the top financial advisors in the business.

1. Make a list of retirement “needs” and “wants.”

If you do not have enough savings for all of your “needs,” make a ten-year plan to increase your funds.

2. Take a hard look at any major debts you have and develop a plan to eliminate them.

3. Brainstorm any “big ticket” financial commitments for the next 10 years and consider how these items might affect your ability to save for retirement.

4. Continually monitor and analyze your asset allocation to make sure it is the right one for you. Understand whether you should move to a more conservative asset allocation or continue investing for growth.

5. Be tax efficient with your investments.

For example, you should defer as much of your salary as you can to your defined contribution plans.

If you’ve ever felt tense, anxious or simply unable to relax while performing your job, you’re far from alone. A recent survey by the American Institute of Stress found 80 percent of U.S. workers across industries have felt stress in the workplace.

To the delight of animal lovers everywhere, awareness of the physical, mental and emotional toll taken by stress is leading progressive employers to create take-your-pet-to-work programs. For example, for the past 20 years Purina has encouraged its associates to bring their pets to work, and in a typical week hundreds of dogs and cats enjoy spending time with their owners at the pet food maker’s St. Louis campus.

As more and more companies adopt a pets-atwork policy, consider these facts based on a recent Purina report about the many advantages of such programs: * They can benefit health: Pet-employee interaction has been shown to reduce the employees’ blood pressure and cholesterol levels

in addition to alleviating anxiety. * They can improve employee retention: Sixtythree percent of employees in pet-friendly workplaces say they’re very satisfied with their work environments - nearly twice as many as those in other workplaces. In fact, respondents rank the option of bringing pets at work as the second most-valuable employee perk - more valuable than free coffee and parking. * They can alleviate loneliness: Eight in 10 employees who can bring pets to work say that activity makes them feel more happy, relaxed and sociable. That’s partly because talking about pets can be an ice breaker, making it easier for people to approach co-workers and get to know them better. * They can promote physical activity: Many employees spend breaks and lunchtime playing with their pets or taking them for walks, boosting their own aerobic activity at the same time. * They can increase pets’ happiness: Rather than staying home waiting for their owners to arrive, pets get to socialize with new people, play with other pets and enjoy more activity.

“Our goal with our report is to continue to raise awareness of the benefits of taking pets to work and to arm employees and employers with insights that can help facilitate pet-friendly environments within their companies.”

Girls’ State

A record number of women are running for public office this year. In the near future, we can expect more female public servants representing the American people - from local chambers to Capitol Hill. In light of this exciting trend, it is important to highlight programs that help develop young women to become the next generation of female leaders. One such program? American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Girls Nation.

ALA Girls Nation is a weeklong learning program, one that positions high-potential teens for a lifetime of public service to our country. This summer, 100 female high school seniors - two from each of our 50 states - will convene in Washington, D.C., for the 72nd Annual ALA Girls Nation. Each teenage girl represents her state as a “senator” - mirroring the structure of government at the federal level. During this transformative weeklong program, these senators form a fictitious nation, enthusiastically campaign to hold office, and - perhaps most important - accept and celebrate the outcome of these elections and come together to serve for the good of the nation.

ALA is a nonpartisan organization committed to advocating for veterans’ issues, promoting patriotism, mentoring America’s youth and proudly presenting ALA Girls Nation for over 70 years. The ALA Girls State and ALA Girls Nation are privately-funded and presented by members of the organization.

With our busy lifestyles today, finding time to shop for groceries, cook, then meet as a family to enjoy a meal together can be a major challenge.

A Harris poll shows only 30 percent of American families share dinner each night. Yet the benefits of maintaining that family time are so substantial that it’s well worth your while to make it happen.

Research shows, for example, that kids and teens who share meals with their families three or more times per week are significantly less likely to be overweight, more likely to eat healthy foods and less likely to have eating disorders. Further, such togetherness is linked with higher grades, better self-esteem and positive behaviors such as sharing, fairness and respect among children who participate.

1. Unplug and unwind. Make your table a phonefree zone, encouraging everyone to talk about their day. This will help your family grow closer together and become more and more involved in each other’s lives. You might be surprised what you will learn!

2. Try new dishes. Comfort food can be a great thing, but so can the sense of adventure that comes from trying new dishes.

3. Make it a team effort. Your family will feel more involved if they share the work. My little guys love helping out by cracking eggs, stirring, sprinkling spices or setting the table. Allowing little ones to help out can also get them excited about the meal, even if they tend to be picky eaters.

4. Plan ahead. It can be tough to have nutritious meals ready to go with a busy schedule, but spending just a few hours of your weekend buying, prepping or even cooking the components of your weekday meals will go a long way.

5. Focus on the positive. No one wants to share a table with fellow diners who are grouchy and unpleasant to each other - although sometimes that can be unavoidable with kids. To keep it positive during this relatively short time each day, avoid judgments, lectures, sarcasm and snarky comments. Ask each person about the highs and lows of his or her day, setting aside this space and time to celebrate victories and help each other through life’s challenges.
