From Me To You...

There is something about a front porch that has always called to me. A place to sit and sip, take in the world and let the neighborhood get acquainted with you. It screams Americana to me. One of the iconic things about this country that I was quite surprised did not exist as much as I had thought.

I always imagined that when I bought a house it would have a front porch, complete with a swing, comfy cushions, a flag waving proudly on a pole, a dog curled up at my feet while I sipped coffee and waved my children off to school in the morning. None of that ever happened. Except the coffee - I have sipped a lot of coffee in the mornings as I scrambled through the chaos that is getting children ready for school.

Back to the iconic image idea. As a foreigner moving to this country I imagined many things that I would find. The vastness of the country that one is very true - this country is bigger than some continents. As a young adult I travelled across country by Amtrak. If you ever have the chance, travelling by rail is a wonderful way to

see and appreciate this beautiful country. Its states are as different as countries and are worth taking the time to visit.

Opportunity is another iconic ideal that many people come here for, streets not quite paved with gold but at least the ability to find your place and do well if you try hard. To some extent that is true, I have done well and it was due to a lot of hard work, but that is changing for our children. Despite their endeavors and opportunity the sheer cost of everything is holding them back. Many young adults are either foregoing college because of the cost, or if they do go they are crippled with debt that they will most likely carry well into their 50’s. Families are forced to welcome their offspring back into their homes so they can survive. Not the image I carried in my backpack 27 years ago when I first landed at JFK. Then we moved west. Into the Wild Wild West land of cowboys and rugged desert. Surprisingly there were more front porches out here than I expected, still not at my house though...

I had heard that there were Coyotes and Roadrunners to be found out here. Images of large brightly colored creatures zooming around dodging cunning animals wielding TNT danced through my head. Imagine my surprise to see the diminutive brown bird scurrying across the street one morning without a Meep-Meep to be heard. That was a Roadrunner? Wow, sadly disappointing. Now the coyotes, those I have found to be as wiley and scrawny as in the cartoons, but thankfully with less access to explosives.

Water Safety

Two children die every day due to drowning, and according to a study from the National SAFE KIDS Campaign, 88 percent of children who drown do so while under adult supervision. Many don’t realize that drowning can occur quietly, with no overt signs that the child is in trouble.

Supervising children vigilantly and creating barriers to accessing water unexpectedly are the first steps in averting a tragedy.

Lindsay Mondick, Senior Manager of Aquatics at YMCA of the USA (Y-USA) offers important safety tips to protect your children from harm around water, whether it’s in the bathtub, at the beach or in a pool.

Never swim alone. Nobody should swim by themselves, in case of accident. Teach your children that they should never enter the water anywhere without a lifeguard and/or responsible caregiver attending them.

Stay attentive and watch without distraction. If you’re with a large group, or even if a lifeguard is present, designate one person to watch the child or children at all times. If children are in a pool or near a body of water, a caregiver needs to be close, paying full attention and not distracted by a phone or other diversions.

Non-swimmers and small children should always wear life jackets when near water and while swimming. Adults should also wear them to model safe behavior.

Learn CPR. When seconds count, bystanders may be the first to help, so learning CPR may save a life. If you were CPR certified years ago, take a refresher course. CPR classes are available at community centers, hospitals and the American Red Cross.

Teach basic swim skills early. Not only do most children enjoy swimming lessons, but taking formal lessons can save their lives. Water safety not only saves lives but also builds confidence. Water safety and swimming lessons promote a lifelong enjoyment of swimming while encouraging healthy living.

Family Traditions

Special family and cultural traditions can strengthen family bonds, provide a sense of belonging and connect the present day to a richer history. Whether tied to holidays or unique meaningful moments, gathering in together helps a family have fun and create new memories.

Although one family has grown and bottled wines in Napa Valley for almost 75 years, the iconic CK Mondavi and Family makes a point of celebrating their shared Italian heritage through food, wine and a favorite traditional pastime - bocce ball.

From their family to yours, here are a few ways you can explore and celebrate your own family traditions.

1. Identify your family’s origins and cultural heritage. With the increasing popularity of DNA kits and family websites, more people are exploring their family origins than ever before.

Whether you speak with older members of your family to learn more about your background, send off your DNA in a box or explore a genealogy website - or a combination of the three - now is a great time to explore where you and your spouse or significant other’s families came from.

2. Create a family tree to share with your parents, siblings and extended family. Maybe other relatives can help fill in some of the missing pieces. Talk about what these discoveries mean

to all of you, and how they help you better understand some of your family’s traditions, traits and habits.

3. Become a tourist of your origin countries. Whether you can travel to one or more of your origin countries for real or just become an armchair tourist for the time being, find out more about the country or countries your ancestors came from. Taste some food and wine from that region, explore the art and music of that area of the world, immerse yourself in a craft or learn to play a traditional game to help you identify with your origins.

4. Rediscover traditions from your family’s past and recreate them. Talk to your parents, grandparents and other elders in your family who can tell you stories about the traditions and celebrations that may have fallen by the wayside during our busy, less connected modern lives. Look through photo albums and family memorabilia and see if you can recreate a family tradition to bring the newer generations that sense of history and continuity.

5. Develop new family traditions. What could be better than enjoying a weekly or monthly dinner with your family, serving the food and wine that are part of your family’s heritage?

Learning about family and history is all about making connections with those people who are most meaningful to you.

Permanent Make Up I get this question all the time. It is no wonder that people are confused. Let me try to clear it up for you.

All permanent makeup (PMU), are tattoos. A tattoo is placing pigment under the skin for a permanent effect. The difference between a facial makeup tattoo and a conventional body tattoo is the depth and the pigment used. PMU is not placed as deeply under the skin. This prevents the pigment from fading grey, blue, black, or looking or blurry.

Every method used to create makeup on the face permanently is PMU. It does not matter whether a rotary machine, tattoo pen, or a hand tool are used. They all create the beautiful eyebrows, eyeliner, and lips desired. The different styles of application can be confusing until they are explained.

PMU is permanent. But it fades. Therefore, you will need to keep up your color with color refresh appointments every 6 months to two years depending upon your skin, regeneration process and method that you had done. Even though it is faded, it will always be there.

Shading is to thicken the look of your brow hair.

Hombre shading is the same method but starting the brow very lightly, and then getting darker as the brow progresses through the arch and tail.

Powder brows are a soft natural looking brow.

Eyeliner is a solid line that can be just an enhancement along the lash line to a more dramatic thicker line.

Lips can just be a liner, a blended line, or a full lip.

Microblading is a beautiful effect of implanting the pigment in very fine lines that look like hair. Not all people are good candidates for this method. If your skin is oily, if you have had PMU in the past, or have scarring, you are not a good candidate

Sometimes downsizing is inspired by a move and other times it’s simply a proactive effort to keep a home clutter-free and make things easier for the next chapter of life. Although it can feel overwhelming, with a few smart steps, the process can be easy and even enjoyable. Money Matters

Emergencies happen when we least expect them, and often at an inconvenient time. If going into debt is the only way you can handle one of life’s curveballs, then it’s time to find a solution. There’s nothing worse than adding a financial burden to an already difficult situation.

Fortunately, it is possible to help your future self and reduce the impact a potential emergency can have by creating an emergency fund. This means saving money that you will only use toward that “rainy day,” when you really need it - not for pricey concert tickets or a vacation splurge. Here are a few tips for building an emergency fund.

Decide how much to save. Many financial experts recommend saving about three to six months’ worth of total expenses. That may seem like a lot of money, but it’s possible to achieve this savings goal if you save a little at a time.

Start small. Consider depositing your emergency funds in a separate, not too accessible account.

Make sure it is not an account that you can easily dip into for daily expenses. Creating a budget and finding areas you can save are essential to determining how much money can be tucked away each month. For example, try to have $500 saved in your emergency fund in one year; that comes out to only about $42 a month - or about a buck fifty a day. That seems entirely doable!

Skipping a coffee shop latte every other day should do the trick.

Conquer one goal at a time. Celebrate when you reach the goal, but not by spending. This is a great lesson to teach your children about finances. Then set your next goal right away.

Over time, your $500 will become $1,000, then $2,000. You’ll have the peace of mind knowing that you’ll be financially prepared if the unexpected comes your way.

Most of us don’t like to think about emergencies, because we don’t want to believe that they’ll happen. But, if you have the discipline to save for those unexpected surprises, your future self will be thanking you when the unexpected happens.

2. Make a confidence-boosting playlist: When you’re having a tough day, use the power of music to give yourself an instant confidence boost. Using your favorite music-streaming app on your smartphone, compile a playlist of your favorite songs for a quick pick-me-up wherever you are!

3. Discover new music: Diversify your song library and discover new music by using your smartphone to explore new artists and genres. Get started by searching for artists that are similar to a few of your current favorites, or select a random playlist on your favorite music streaming app and see what new artists are recommended for you. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even take your music exploration a step further and check out a local band (or two!) at their next show.

4. Take the stage: Resolve to broaden your horizons and take that next big step to center stage.
