I have sat in front of my computer for a few days now, thinking of what to write to you. I have a quote swimming in my brain, “The last 24 hours have been a heck of a year!” And that sums up our lives. Things are developing and moving so rapidly that it is hard to keep up.

As I write this our children are at home for the foreseeable future, and most of us are working from home. By the time you read this in a couple of weeks I anticipate the whole country will be on lockdown. The irony of my last article is not lost one me. When I said I welcomed change I did not mean this!

It is not all doom and gloom though. I see examples of people helping others, sharing resources, putting up their Christmas lights and taping pictures in their windows so that those taking a walk can see them. Then there is the news. Ugh. I try not to pay too much attention to the sad statistics and instead focus on the positive ones. Let me share some with you. As of now there are...

• 89,918 confirmed survivors of this virus • 95% of the confirmed cases are mild • 2 drugs already in existence have been successful in treating patients • 3 vaccines are in human trials in the US with other countries around the world conducting their own trials • 0 new cases have been reported in Hubei province (the epicenter of Covid19) in 2 days The thing to remember is that this will have an end point and that we should try to calm the crazy hamster wheel running in circles in our brains.

- Timber Hawkeye As strange as things seem today we will get back to normal, even if it is a new normal.

Gavin Newsom People will come out of this stronger, more connected and more grateful for the everyday things - going to a movie, visiting friends, travelling, attending school or college.

While we are in this period I encourage you to be kind to each other, be kind to your family, and most importantly be kind to yourself.

Business 411 When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.”

There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown.

•

The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. It also allows for advertisers to re-position a brand or introduce a new product.

• Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times.

• Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, which can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession.

• When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current – and possibly future – sales.

An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.”

An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits.

Another strategy used by marketers is changing the ad message and using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. Some advertisers will offer interest-free loans, coupons or special promotions to boost sales and market 4 Estrella Publishing - The Park magazine

share. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return. For some advertisers that don’t give cost incentives, they can change the ad message to being expensive but worth it. Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides.

Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/ or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share.

Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.”

5 Diet Questions Before you start a new diet, answer these five questions to see if it will help you lose fat.

Fat Loss Question 1: Does it make you hungry all day every day?

When you’re on a diet, it’s normal to feel the occasional tinge of hunger. Much of those light hunger pangs, however, should be done away with by drinking a glass of water. And if you stay busy enough with life in general, you ought to be able to ignore some other hunger. But if your diet has you feeling hungry at all times, you’re not going to last long.

To avoid falling into the pit of hungry despair, go with a diet that lets you eat protein, fiber, and healthy fats. Also, as stated above, drink plenty of water to avoid confusing hunger with thirst.

Fat Loss Question 2: Does it force you to drop food groups?

A healthy diet is one that incorporates appropriate amounts of food from each food group. When a diet cuts an entire food group from your eating options, you’re going to have a hard time surviving your diet for longer than a week or two. One of the most popular food groups to cut is carbohydrates. While not eating carbs will indeed help you lose weight, carbs are what make it possible to store energy to make it through the day. No carbs, no energy, no willpower to maintain your diet.

Fat Loss Question 3: Is your mood suddenly unpredictable?

Everyone gets metabolic every once in a while, but if your diet is too restrictive, you may find your mood swings coming with greater regularity and severity. This happens because excessive caloric restrictions mess with the chemicals in your brain. When this occurs, there is no telling what direction your mood will go. Before letting your diet ruin your relationships and put your job at risk, reconsider your diet and find one that helps you be cool, calm, and collect.

Fat Loss Question 4: Does it insist there is no need to exercise?

There are some diet plans that promise plenty of lost pounds without the addition of exercise.

If this is the type of diet you’re considering or are in the midst of, beware! Exercise comes with countless health benefits that will make your weight loss all the more beneficial. From preventing chronic pain to improving your energy level and sleeping better, exercise is a vital component to any diet.

Fat Loss Question 5: Do you still weigh the same?

It is true that the best way to lose weight is slowly—approximately one or two pounds per week. But take note that slowly doesn’t mean not at all. In the event you’ve been on a diet for a few weeks without any results to speak of, then your diet is a flop. Drop it immediately and find something that will help you lose pounds.

Otherwise, you’ll get discouraged with your diet and swap it for the old habits that got you where you are now.

Yum Yum! Avocado Chicken Salad Ingredients:

• 10 oz finely diced chicken, about 2 cups but weigh for accuracy (1 2/3 Lean) • 1/2 cup 2% Plain Greek yogurt (1/3 Lean) • 3 oz chopped avocado (2 Healthy Fats) • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (1 Condiment) • 1/4 tsp salt (1 Condiment) • 1/8 tsp pepper (1/2 Condiment) • 1 tbsp + 1 tsp lime juice (2 Condiments) • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped (1/4 Condiment) Directions: • Combine all ingredients in a medium sized bowl. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

• Split the chicken salad in half and serve with your favorite Greens!

2 Servings with 1 Lean, 2.37 Condiments and 1 Healthy Fat per serving

Home School Help With our children at home you may be wondering how you can manage to keep them on track and be a teacher on top of all the other roles you currently have. As a parent who has homeschooled in the past I wanted to let you know what worked for me.

Get up!

I am not suggesting a 5am wake-up call, but they should get up and get going so that you are not nagging them to finish their work at dinnertime.

Set a schedule.

This will help all of you. Your children are used to routine at school and having that at home will create a new sense of normal. It will reassure them that even as their world has changed, this piece of it can be relied on.

Provide regular breaks.

Playtime is very important especially for young children. Mental breaks are just as important for the teenagers. Send them into the backyard to run around, give them some screen time. Yes I said it, let them watch a movie or play a game

during school time. Just put a time limit on it so they get back to what they need to do.

Don’t forget exercise.

This is one you should do as a family. Go for a walk, play relay races in your backyard, crank up the tunes and have a dance party. It will release tension and maybe even work off some of those extra pounds we are sure to gain during our time spent at home.

Socialize with their friends.

Skype, Facetime, texting, multiplayer online games. These are just some of the ways your children can interact with others and this is important. It will give them a break from the isolation and reassure them that they are not the only ones going through this.

The most important thing to remember is that even though your kids will have work from their teachers, they are learning constantly. Whether it is building with leogs or playing with their siblings they are still learning. Go easy on them if they have a meltdown or don’t stay on track, this is not easy for them either.

Coronanxiety I’m sure that most of you know the basics about what you should be doing now to maintain your physical health but you also need to take care of your emotional health. One important way to do that is to manage your anxiety and to reduce your stress. Here’s how I’m managing my own coronanxiety and how you can manage yours.

1. Focus on what you do know as opposed to what you don’t know - Whenever you notice that your anxiety is leading you to contemplate “what-if” scenarios straight out of World War Z, resist taking the bait. Instead, focus on the facts.

2. Focus on what’s in your control as opposed what isn’t - When you feel overwhelmed by what’s going on, take a pause from whatever you’re doing, and shift your mind to thinking about what’s within your control.

3. Focus on what you can do as opposed to what you can’t - Whenever you feel powerless, focus on the actions you can take instead of those you cannot.

4. Help yourself by helping others - Whenever you feel paralyzed by difficult feelings, one way

to get unstuck is to help other people who are in need. Practicing kindness and helping others are great ways to reinforce your own feelings of agency and control, and they have the bonus of making you feel empowered and connected.

5. Limit your news consumption - The situation is changing and developing by the hour which is keeping many of us glued to the news or to social media. However, when the news is especially stressful, it’s extremely important to find a balance between keeping informed and not becoming overwhelmed. Decide on specific times of day in which you will check the news, and check it only then.

6. Keep your perspective - Right now it can be hard for any of us — psychologists included! — to see the light at the end of the tunnel. But this emergency situation will resolve eventually. We don’t know if it will be in weeks or in months, but humans are highly adaptable creatures and life will seem normal again soon.

We’ll emerge from this crisis having gained increased resilience, understanding and empathy.
