From Me To You...

Welcome to the April edition of The Park a magazine for Litchfield residents.

During a recent conversation with my Mum I found out that my childhood home is up for short term rent. For the next 6 months I could rent my memories. Let me tell you it was very tempting.

Due to the location of this house it would probably cost more to get there than it would to rent, and I really could not take advantage of it this year as my summer is ridiculously overbooked already.

Plus it is unfurnished and England in the summer is not exactly comfortable to start with.

But still. It made me think, can you ever really go home?

I flipped through the online pictures and immediately a sense of outrage overtook me.

They had cut down nearly every tree that had surrounded my home. The cherry tree that I lay under reading Tess of the D’Urbervilles - gone.

The oak I learned to climb and hide in - gone.

The broad limbed beauty my siblings and I built a tree house in - gone.

What else had changed? Well it seemed they had removed one bathroom only to relocate it on the opposite side of the house. Why? Beats me.

In the kitchen there was an addition. A stove. Do

people not know how to use an Aga anymore?

Even if you don’t know, you can learn. One of my fondest memories was cooking pancakes on the griddle of that Aga. Sure it could be tricky cooking a cake in an oven that was powered with coal but where is your sense of adventure?

I noted that with an energy rating of ‘F’ they had not decided to improve the heating or insulation in the house. Now that I could have got behind.

Every room had a fireplace to provide heat, and for that reason I can now win the fire starting challenge if I ever make it onto Survivor. Also the eaves over my sister’s bedroom would collect snow every winter, only to release it in a beautiful waterfall in the spring. In front of her doorway.

Inside. I am guessing that may still be a problem.

Despite all these glitches it is still the home I grew up in and it holds a special place in my heart.

The indoor shutters are still there - 19th century insulation at it’s best. The amazing staircase that wraps around the outside of the entrance hall reminds me of decorating trees at Christmas. And sliding down the bannister, to my parent’s horror.

The long driveway where I learned how to use a stick shift and had the horrible job of shovelling when it snowed still winds past fields and around the front of the house.

Yes, the house has changed but my home is still there, peeking out behind the improvements that subsequent owners have made. Anyone want to go in on a temporary house share with me?

Positive Parenting If you’re a parent, a big part of your job is making sure your children feel well. No matter how many times you wash their hands, sterilize their toys or keep a sparkling clean house, inevitably the germs will win. All parents know that taking care of a sick child can be a stressful experience that can leave you feeling helpless - especially when they have a cough that is keeping them up at night.

Emily Schuman, founder of the popular lifestyle parenting blog Cupcakes and Cashmere, has had more than her fair share of days spent taking care of her toddler when she is sick. The following are some of her best cough and cold remedies to help care for your little one when they’re sick.

1. Sleep is great medicine Parents know that a sleepy child is a crabby child. Just as sleep is vital for a child’s mood, it is also a crucial step in combating coughs and colds. Naps and early bedtimes should be a priority. To help your sick child sleep better and longer, you might have to give them more cuddles than usual!

2. Reduce their coughing One of the worst parts of taking care of a sick child is hearing them cough, which is also uncomfortable for the child. In fact, a recent Vicks

VapoRub survey* found that nearly all (94 percent) moms say coughing from being sick makes sleeping difficult for their child, and 92 percent say finding symptom relief to improve their child’s sleep is top priority.

3. Bring out the humidifier With winter comes dry air, and when you add in central heating, the air is even dryer. This is particularly uncomfortable when you have a cold or cough. Placing a humidifier near your child’s bed can do wonders as far as allowing them to breathe more comfortably and sleep better.

4. Feed them nutrient-rich foods When you’re sick, it’s easy to gravitate toward comfort food like mac and cheese or sweets. But it is important to make sure your child gets plenty of nutrients from food like fresh fruits and veggies. Soups and smoothies are perfect ways to get your little ones to eat these foods.

5. Provide them with activities and distractions Being sick is not fun, and not just because your child feels lousy. They’re also cooped up, bored and incredibly restless. Make sure you have plenty of rainy-day activities, like coloring books and special toys, ready for them. If they feel up to it, encourage them to make a fort out of the couch cushions. It’s also the perfect time to let them have extra screen time.

It’s hard to have a sick child at home, but being prepped with some creative distractions can go a long way toward comforting your child and making things easier for the entire household.

And remember as stressful as it can be caring for a sick child, nearly nine in ten (87 percent) moms say it can be a bonding experience.

Life As A Caregiver

I knew the day would come when I could no longer care for my mom in the manner it took to keep her comfortable. I knew it because I had read about it over and over. I knew it because the support group I attend spoke about it. I knew it because that is the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. I knew it because all the people I know whose loved ones are victims of the disease have experienced it. Here is a perfect example of logic and intellect colliding with emotion. I knew the day would come….but when it did, I just couldn’t believe it.

needed to lie down, so I kissed her and said goodbye.

I delivered mom to her new care facility: I brought what little stuff she had from my casita, helped arrange her new room the way she liked, gave her a big hug & told her I loved her with all my heart…and left. I wasn’t allowed to return for two weeks. It honestly felt like someone had socked me in the stomach, but I also felt an enormous amount of relief.

I continue to work on getting over the guilt and the powerless feeling of not being able to control the situation. I am slowly getting my life back, but it is a new life. Life with my mom in a care facility.

The reality of this is that I will have to go through this loss again when she passes away. Hopefully, I will be stronger and better prepared. Hopefully.

The kind people at her new home said their job was to take care of her…and MY job was to enjoy her. So when the day finally came when I could visit her, I was so excited and anxious to see her.

Putting our precious cargo in the caring hands of others is exactly the right thing to do as Alzheimer’s patients decline. These professional caregivers are emotionally removed from the horrible reality of the disease and can care for our loved ones efficiently and without hesitation.

The constant reminder of how mom is declining surrounds me mentally but not visually like it did when she lived here.

I came through the beautiful living room and found her sitting in the family room. Her face lit up when she saw me. It was wonderful. There wasn’t too much to talk about since she doesn’t remember much of what happens during her day, but we laughed and hugged….that was all we really needed. I left after about an hour…and would return in two days.

That day wasn’t as positive. She was still in bed when I arrived in the afternoon because she was suffering from one of her horrible chronic headaches. But when I woke her up, she was happy to see me. I could see the pain on her face, but she smiled and decided to have some lunch. So, they brought it to her and we sat together while she ate. Moments of Zen From work to working out, kids’ activities to household tasks and so much more, modern life has never been busier. The problem is hectic schedules can lead to unnecessary stress.

4. Take time to reflect.

Take those extra moments to reflect on everything you accomplished during your day or week. This will help give you a sense of pride and is a real confidence-booster.

5. Break from technology.

Take a break from technology, even if it’s only for 5 minutes. Set down your phone, turn off the television and step away from all electronics. Just giving your mind a break from the active world of technology can reduce stress and help you mentally reset.

Remember, the little moments are what make the biggest impact in life, and by embracing mindfulness, you’re setting the stage to be able to focus on what really matters.

Ask A Pharmacist There’s no denying that prescription drug coverage and medications can be complex territory. Enter UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement’s Chief Pharmacy Officer Mike Anderson, PharmD, who has spent his career navigating the ins and outs of the Rx world.

Below, Anderson answers some common questions people ask about drug coverage and prescriptions.

Q. What’s the difference between PDP and MAPD plans?

A. Original Medicare doesn’t provide coverage for most prescription drugs, so for help paying for medications, you have two options: a standalone Part D prescription drug plan (PDP) in addition to Original Medicare or Original Medicare and a Medicare supplement plan; or a Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug coverage (MAPD). Medicare Advantage plans can include additional benefits like dental, vision and hearing coverage, and combine your coverage into a single plan. Both plans are offered by private insurance companies contracted by Medicare.

Q. How do I know if my prescriptions are covered by my Medicare plan?

A. Whether you get coverage through Medicare Advantage or a standalone Part D plan, each has a list of prescription drugs covered. You’ll want to look closely to make sure your medications are covered. Health insurers post listss online, or you can call your plan to request a printed version.

Keep in mind that plans can change from year to year, so don’t assume that prescription drugs covered this year will always carry over.

Q. How can I save money while remaining on my medications?

A. There are many ways to do that: Home-delivery pharmacy benefits can save money and a trip to the pharmacy. Some mailorder pharmacies offer the convenience of The Park

ordering a three-month supply of drugs delivered to your home for less than purchasing at a retail location.

Switching to generic drugs or drugs on a lower tier of the formulary is another step that could save money. If you are taking brand-name medications now, discuss generic alternatives with your doctor.

Q. Can I split my pills in half?

A. Talk to your doctor about whether pill-splitting for your medication is medically advised. Also, consult your pharmacist on whether the actual pill form presents risks. Some pills are dangerous when split, because splitting affects how quickly the drug is released into your body. Other pills become ineffective when split, because the pill contains a coating to protect it from stomach acid, and splitting the pill breaks that coating.

Q. I take a lot of pills daily.

One I take three times a day. Some I just take once. I get busy and forget to take my pills. Can I just take them all in the morning?

A. It’s important to take your medicine as your doctor prescribed it. Some medications need to be taken at specific times to be effective. Plus, taking all your medications at one time can be dangerous as you run the risk of potential adverse interactions, side effects and even overdosing.

Literacy at Home

What was your favorite childhood book?

Chances are, you can come up with a title right away. That’s because books create powerful memories of stories and characters that inspire kids’ imaginations and will be treasured for a lifetime. Unfortunately, some children grow up with limited access to books, meaning they’re unable to create those memories so many people take for granted. A lack of books in the home is also linked to lower reading scores and less success in school, according to research by the Family and Community Engagement Research Compendium.

Here’s the good news: this problem does have a solution. Having books in the home has been proven to improve children’s reading performance, cause them to read more frequently and for longer lengths of time, and improve overall attitudes toward learning. It’s clear that promoting literacy in your home and in your community are worthwhile investments of your time and money. Wondering where to start?

Build reading into the routine: When the kids are small, it’s easy for many parents to create the nightly ritual of story time. Don’t stop just because they’ve started school and are reading on their own. Commit to sitting down every night to read together. When the kids see you reading books too, you set a great example.

Ask questions: Asking children questions while you read together helps them develop critical thinking skills. For example, you might ask, “How is the family in this book like our family?” or “The girl in this book likes to swim. What do you like to do?”

Give books as gifts: The next time you celebrate a holiday or child’s birthday, consider giving the gift of a book - especially a title or two that you loved growing up.

Share, share, share: Every year or so, go through your book collection with the kids and decide which titles should be given a new home. They can be donated to schools and public libraries, or given to other groups that make books available for free or little cost to young readers. Even better, when you buy a book, purchase a second copy to donate or give away.

You have been told today is the day you get to visit with your parent that you haven’t seen in months. You’re nervous, you’re a bit excited, and you are a tad scared. You have been told you are going to see your parent at a place called Arizonans for Children. Hmmmm…. you wonder what this place is. You tuck your feelings in your pocket and wait to find out.

Put yourself in those tiny shoes and join a team of individuals that smile, are creative, and passionate about ensuring every child that walks through the doors at Arizonans for Children feels welcomed and loved. We have Visitation Centers with an environment that is homelike and inviting to all children and parents that need time to bond.

The children we serve are in foster care or have been away from one parent for a variety of reasons including a divorce, domestic violence, or substance abuse. Our staff invites you to join the team and spend time helping families heal.

From checking in and greeting families, to leading a session of yoga or creating new memories through art, to learning how to supervise a family’s visit, there is a role for you.

The Visitation Center offers a variety of play rooms, a kitchen to cook a meal in, books, air hockey, and comfy couches to watch movies. You’ll hear families battle in a game of foosball, singing along with the karaoke machine, or squealing as they chase one another on our playground. You are bound to hear laughter and will see many shed tears. We have opportunities for you to put your strengths to use or gain new skills.

College Costs

The last year of high school is a whirl of activity, and it’s no different when it comes to the final leg of college selection. Once the acceptance notifications arrive, it will soon be time to sit down with a different stack of mail: financial aid letters.

As you undoubtedly know, the cost of college is no small investment. In the 2017-18 academic year, the average tuition and fees for four-year public colleges is $25,620, while for private colleges, the costs are $33,520, and public two-year colleges cost $3,570, according to the College Board. At the same time, the College Board reports that more than 70 percent of students receive grants to help pay for college.

Hopefully, those financial letters contain some good news.

Work-study and student loan packages are options that will need students to find a job or pay the money back.

Cost-of-living expenses: Think about those extra costs that come up over the weeks and months of any college year, such as meals, phone, transportation and laundry. Don’t forget entertainment. After all, they’re not going to spend all their time studying in their dorm room. Does the campus and community offer plenty of low-cost and no-cost attractions and entertainment so they can have fun with their friends without breaking the bank?

Local economy: One thing worth considering is the local economy of the first-choice school, especially if your student may want to pick up a part-time job along the way. Even better, look for local employers that are compatible with your child’s career goals. An entry-level job at one of these workplaces can help make ends meet, while making your student more marketable when it’s time to graduate.

Ongoing costs: The financial aid letter describes the student’s first year. As much as you can, do some forecasting for the next three to four years.

It’s especially important to understand whether awards are renewable, or if they’re available only to first-year students.

For most families, analyzing the letters is a process of uncovering the college that can offer the best education at the best value for your student. One way to get there is to parse the details of the letter itself so you understand the net cost of your student’s education. Still, it’s critical to look at other factors and opportunities around higher education costs.

Deciphering free aid vs. other options: Take a close look at each line in the aid column.

Key words, such as scholarships, grants and fellowships, signal no-strings money for school.

Negotiation: If the college isn’t coming through with enough aid to make college affordable for your student and family, don’t give up. You might be able to negotiate more aid. Submit a letter and ask for a follow-up appointment. Be specific about what you are requesting, and be sure to explain if you have specific circumstances such as medical costs or a job loss that may have affected your ability to meet the expected family contribution.

If you find the amount of financial aid provided isn’t enough (including the amount offered in federal loans), families may want to research and explore private student loans as an option to cover the additional expenses.
