From Me To You...

Every now and then I find myself scrolling through an online newspaper from my youth. It is a well known and respected piece of journalism, but I don’t usually go there to read the news. I gravitate towards a piece called ‘A Letter To...’ in which ordinary people write letters that they would never send to the intended recipient.

I suppose it is a catharsis for them, and me in a way. It allows me to explore and validate (in some instances) feelings I have had about some situations.

Some of the letters are scandalous “A letter to the wife of my boyfriend.” Or “A letter to the couple who died in my house.” Others are more humorous, “A letter to my lazy spouse.” Then there are the ones that tug on your heart. “A letter to my brother who passed away.” And “A letter to our surrogate, who had second thoughts.”

Reading these letters, I feel a sense of completion for the authors. They have been able to say their piece and get those feelings out in a healthy way.

We have all been in situations that were left unfinished. The witty comeback you wished you had thought of at the time but now it would be too late, perhaps even petty, to say out loud.

These letters allow the writers to speak those thoughts and feel those feelings in a safe way. Of course they are all anonymous and I am sure the recipients don’t ever read them, but sometimes just putting things on paper is enough.

I am sure you have been told in the past that when your feelings are at a boiling point you should write an e-mail then delete it. I have written many quick, emotion filled e-mails then thought better of them and hit the delete button.

These letters are an extension of that - the ability to blow off steam and get your point across without hurting anyone else’s feelings.

There is another side to reading these letters too.

The sneaky side of superiority. That feeling you get when you read an advice column or watch Reality TV. “My life may have problems but thank goodness it is not as bad as this!”

And let’s face it, Reality TV is the train wreck of humanity. I do love to watch it, sampling the lives of people I would never meet in real life.

Realizing that no matter how much money or fame these fabulous people accumulate, they have problems too. Their grass may seem greener on the other side of that fence, but they still have to mow it.

On Our Cover A year ago Tammi Halim was a successful Aesthetician in Diva’s and Dudes, little did she know how radically and happily her life would change. The salon she was working in was closed and then bought by another company.

Then Tammi found out that a space in the building next door was for sale and with the help and encouragement from her family, friends and customers she opened her own salon.

Walking into The Skincare Extraordinaire & Park Plaza Salon, I immediately feel a sense of calm and well-being. From the tasteful, soothing decor, to the wonderful atmosphere, I felt relaxed and loved. Tammi has collected a fantastic group of people to work there with her, and their sense of fun and caring enveloped me as I sat and chatted with the team (all of whom moved over from Divas and Dudes to Tammi’s salon.)

Stephanie Paolinell, originally from CA, has been a hairstylist for over 12 years and loves to make women feel good. She gets the best feeling from improving a client’s mood and although styling is her forte, Stephanie would say that building relationships and allowing her clients to show their most youthful side is what she does best.

Dana Moravece, an Arizona native, has spent the last 14 years as a hairstylist in the West Valley and has a talent for consultations. She can tease your desires out of you (no pun intended) and

enhance your hair’s natural beauty, giving you the confidence to be yourself. Oh, and if you need a Brazilian Blow Out, she is your girl!

Deb Goyette, a 32 year hair veteran, loves both classic and trendy styles. As a former salon owner she couldn’t be happier to be here and loves making people feel happy with their look.

Lindsay Hauger has been a hairstylist for over 13 years and although razor cuts are her favorite, she says that her clients are like family and bring out the best in her. Making them happy with their look is what drives her.

Jocelyn Ledesma rounds out the team of stylists, her clients are like family and she especially loves helping her more mature clients. Making them look great, especially when they can no longer do it for themselves, is something she loves.

Alyson Rovenstine is Tammi’s right hand. A student Elementary School Teacher, Alyson helps out in the salon between classes. You will find her smiling face there to welcome you when she is not at EMCC. ‘Salon Mom’, Mary Harriss-Adams is the soul of the salon. A former stylist, she glows with pride at her daughter Tammi’s work in getting this salon off the ground. “If I still worked I would have loved to be here. This salon has allowed the girls to blossom and stretch their creative, professional lives.”

I have known Tammi since she became an Aesthetician and to say she loves her job does not do her justice. She revels in taking clients who have lost their confidence and healing their skin so they can flourish. She is skilled, competent, empathetic and talented. I have brought my own children to Tammi during their crippling teenage years and she not only helped their skin, she built up their confidence. I can proudly recommend Tammi’s work and I wish her only the best in her new endeavor. I have no doubt it will be as successful as she is.

Home Sweet Home Being a tourist in another country or town is all about the feeling of unfamiliarity and amazement.

My family and I can’t travel as much as we would like to due to commitments and our children being in school; which had me thinking, I wonder what it would be like to be a tourist in my own town? I feel the urge to explore and know more about my town, Litchfield Park. I’ve lived here for over a year and have not taken the time to “get to know” this community. So why don’t we feel the urge to explore and visit our own city or town?

People get so caught up by their daily routines that they become blind and don’t pay attention to the little details that are right in front of their eyes.

I came up with a few reasons to get you guys out the door!

You will get new insight: I decided to visit neighborhoods I was not used to going to and I took pictures as if I was a tourist. I looked around at the places I was and appreciated the little things around me...parks, older homes with a ton of character and anything else that surrounded me.

You will learn about your towns history: I drive by the Litchfield Park Historical Society and Museum several times a week. I must have passed this place a thousand times but never stopped and walked in to it. However, when I travel I will walk into every quirky museum just to see what I can find out about the city I am in. By exploring your own city’s history, you will get a better concept of its heritage and be able to bring this with you while traveling.

Meet new people: Have you ever talked to a stranger? Next time you are in a coffee shop or sorts try and engage in a conversation with a complete stranger. Okay, this might sound a little bit awkward to just talk to someone randomly but trust me, you’ll be surprised by how interesting some conversations can be and how they can have a big impact on you!

tea shops and restaurants that aren’t your usual hangouts and go exploring.

I fall into the trap of the “routine”. We always go the same restaurants and hangouts. Why? Its easier; you know the food/drink will be great so why bother trying something new. Again, I still haven’t explored every restaurant and drink shop here in Litchfield Park-time to change it up a bit!

You will refreshed: I couldn’t have imagined traveling and exploring more of my own city was going to be such an eye opening experience but it made me realize how beautiful it is and how much I want to share all this beauty and history with people coming to visit my home. Keep searching. Keep learning. Stay curious.

Furry Friends For pediatric patients, being in the hospital can be a frightening, vulnerable and lonely experience, especially for those undergoing serious medical treatments. However, research has shown that dogs can have beneficial, longlasting effects on pediatric patients.

Here are a few things to know about in-residence dogs and their positive impact on pediatric patients: 1) In-residence dogs are highly trained service dogs that work in healthcare settings and perform specialized tasks. They are also trained to create an emotional connection with pediatric patients, helping to provide them with joy, comfort and other medical benefits.

2) Different from volunteer dogs that visit a hospital for a short time, in-residence dogs have a similar work schedule as their human counterparts, working closely with their handlers.

They often have access to non-sterile clinics and inpatient units.

3) In-residence dogs can be an integral part of a child’s treatment team. They perform a range of tasks that help medical teams achieve their clinical goals. “What you eat and drink can have a tremendous impact on how you look and feel,” says Dawn Jackson Blatner, Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist. “Eating healthy is important at any age, but as you get older, certain foods can have a powerful impact on your overall well-being.”

Dawn’s top picks for food that fight aging include: Fish - “Try substituting fish into meals a few times a week,” says Dawn. “Americans tend to eat less fish than people in other parts of the world and they are missing out on great-tasting protein that’s packed with omega-3s.”

Allergies

Spring. The time of year when, as poet Alfred Lord Tennyson famously said, a young man’s (and woman’s) fancy “lightly turns to thoughts of love.” That is, of course, if you’re not sneezing, coughing or dealing with itchy eyes. Spring allergies seem to get worse every year. Is there anything you can do to avoid them?

Yes, says allergist Todd Mahr, MD, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). “You might feel like suffering from allergies is going to happen every spring no matter what, but there are ways to help alleviate your symptoms.”

These 8 ACAAI tips will help you enjoy the season instead of sitting it out indoors.

1. See an allergist. Before the season kicks in,

make an appointment with an allergist to find out exactly what is causing those itchy, watery eyes.

Discovering the allergen that you’re reacting to is the first step in treating it. The ACAAI’s Allergist Locator can help you find a board-certified allergist in your area.

2. Find out if it’s allergies or asthma. Or both. The symptoms from asthma can be similar to those of allergies. To make matters worse, allergies plus asthma can be a one-two punch for some allergy sufferers. Almost 75 percent of asthma sufferers also have allergies. Your allergist can diagnose what’s causing your symptoms and offer suggestions for treatment so you can start living the life you want to live.

3. Consider allergy shots... They may be the best way to treat tree, grass, mold, dust mite, cat and dog allergies. Allergy shots are immunotherapy.

That means your allergist will gradually give you increasingly larger doses of whatever you’re allergic to. There are also tablets that melt under your tongue to treat allergies to ragweed, grass pollen and dust mites. Both forms create a tolerance within your immune system.

4. ...or get a prescription. Research has shown that most allergy sufferers find prescription medications more effective than those they can get over the counter. But most people don’t go in search of a prescription. An allergist can discover exactly what you’re allergic to and prescribe the right medication to ease your symptoms.

5. Commit to a thorough spring cleaning. It’s not just to give the house a fresh look after the long winter. A deep clean will reduce allergens like mold, which build up in basements and other areas where you might not go every day. It’s also a great way to get rid of the pet hair and dander that have built up in places like your sofa. Wash throw rugs regularly, too, in hot water.

With a few commonsense tactics, you can get ahead of your allergies and keep them in the rear-view mirror all season long.
