From Me To You...

I have a very unusual dog. On the surface he looks like many other large mixed breed dogs, fuzzy and floppy with an adorable face. But he is not like other dogs.

To start with we chose this breed because one of our children has allergies. The side benefit of this is a dog that rarely sheds. Except for Hank.

He sheds, boy does he shed. Five minutes after vacuuming the house there are blonde tumbleweeds rolling across the kitchen floor. He also has allergies. Any cats make him sneeze convulsively. Aerosol sprays do that too. His nose runs all the time. I am often found in front of the dog, tissue in hand yelling “Blow Hank!” Doesn’t help. His allergies also give him red ‘hot spots’ on his belly. So we give him allergy pills that seem to help - and cost a small fortune.

He is a sweet boy, however he has issues on top of the allergies. I think he has FOMO - fear of missing out. He has to be the first up the stairs and into rooms, like he is worried he will miss something if he doesn’t see it before us. I quite often fake him out and send him crashing up the

stairs while I wander quietly into the kitchen.

Hank has two speeds; relaxed, calm companion and hyper, neurotic dervish. We have a retired service animal in the family and we often joke that Hank could do with his own Emotional Support dog. My sister met him for the first time and commented that he was ‘Rather Special’ and I will admit that he is at his best when Mickey (the aforementioned service dog) is by his side.

One of his more ‘endering characteristics’ is his love for his family. Unfortunately this means we can never use the pool until Hank is safely tucked away out of sight and earshot.You see he firmly believes that we can’t swim. He can swim and is very good at it but when we get in the pool Hank’s protective instincts go into overdrive. He barks like a lunatic from the edge, seeming to say “Get out! Get out! Get out!” As long as no-one goes underwater he is fine yelling from the side. Once a head goes underwater he turns into Hank the Lifesaving Lifeguard. He catapults himself into the water - still barking which is comical because he ends up swallowing so much water he starts to choke. Not deterred by the water rushing into his mouth he bravely paddles over to the person in need of rescue and proceeds to try and grab them with his paws. This results in scratches and yelling and everyone leaving the pool.

All kidding aside, Hank is my loyal companion, lying by my feet as I work and loving us all fiercely, and I wouldn’t trade him for any other dog in the world.

Following Lyla is our Artist: Audrey, lover of all living things. Audrey sees the beauty in every tree, plant, animal and human. When she is not at art class she is often buried in a Novel allowing her imagination to whisk her away to far away lands, flying with dragons and swimming with mermaids.

Mahek, so strong with a heart made of gold.

Mahek looks up to her two big sisters while also working hard to set a good example for her two younger sisters. There is not a person Mahek

meets that does not leave a friend. Recently Mahek started tennis at the Litchfield Park Recreational Center. It is safe to say she has found her passion and we are so excited for her.

Brooklyn, our second gymnast and social butterfly. So eager to learn. Brooklyn is the oldest of our twins, by 40 seconds, and she is sure to let everyone know. She is 4 going on 14 with such an adventurous soul and always willing to lend a helping hand.

Braelyn, our baby. The softest heart and most sensitive of all five girls. She searches for the comfort and leadership of her older sisters, but is not afraid to speak up for herself and challenge each one of them. Once she allows herself out of her shell she will light up an entire room.

Together the girls enjoy fun at the park or weekend breakfasts at their favorite restaurant Park Cafe followed by dessert at Papa Paul’s.

There is never a dull moment, just a new experience.

Fitness Trends The world of health and fitness is an area that is always evolving to the point there’s continuously something new to try, and sometimes it can even reach the point of feeling overwhelming. Brian Zehetner, Planet Fitness’ Director of Health and Fitness, maps out the five major fitness trends that are likely to make the biggest impact in 2019: 1. 30-minute workouts: People are more time-crunched than ever and they want comprehensive and effective workouts that can be done in relatively short time frames. Ideally, these workouts include both a cardio component and a strength component. We may even see more 15- and 20-minute workout programs popping up this year and beyond!

2. Programs geared toward teens and young adults: Expect an influx of youth-oriented workouts and wellness opportunities in 2019.

With new guidelines from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommending at least 60 minutes of aerobic physical activity for kids every day, we expect to see even more youth, teens and young adults reenergizing their daily activity.

Travellers With Disabilities Traveling, especially during peak times, can come with lots of hassles. Booking a flight, traversing through a packed airport and getting to the gate on time are just a few things that can cause stress. Then there’s using those tiny on-board bathrooms, and hoping you get your luggage back in one piece. Travel is difficult for the average person, but now imagine doing all this in a wheelchair.

Shaun Castle, a service-disabled U.S. Army veteran and deputy executive director of Paralyzed Veterans of America, has experienced the difficulties firsthand. He has had his wheelchair bent, cracked and even lost in separate incidents.

“These are more than minor inconveniences,” Castle says. “If my wheelchair is damaged, it may mean I am stranded until I can get it repaired.”

But things could be getting better soon for Castle and tens of thousands of travelers with disabilities with the signing of the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2018. H.R.

302 provides a “bill of rights” and an advisory panel for passengers with disabilities, as well as revised training and procedures for TSA screenings for people with disabilities.

There are some things travelers with disabilities can do to reduce risks, especially during the busy peak travel times.

• Write it down. The group recommends attaching written instructions for folding and stowing directly to wheelchairs and scooters. Many airlines have forms online for passengers to complete.

Plan ahead. Call the airline a week in advance of the flight to confirm special arrangements and call the TSA Cares helpline 72 hours in advance (855-787-2227) for assistance with security.

“This new bill recognizing the rights of travelers with disabilities is a huge move forward, but there’s more work to do,” says Castle. “Paralyzed Veterans of America will continue to work toward accessibility for all Americans with disabilities.”

Cookies!

Experienced bakers know how to achieve perfect cookies every time. But don’t worry! There’s no need to buy high-priced equipment or enroll in culinary school. Here are a few simple tips for delectable cookies. * Invest in a food scale. This is important when measuring flour, which settles and varies in density if scooped. The rule of thumb is: Every cup of white flour equals 5 ounces * Chill the dough. After mixing ingredients, chilling cookie dough for an hour or more prevents cookies from over-spreading while baking. * Use parchment paper. No need for pricey baking sheets. Parchment paper on cookie sheets does wonders for preventing overdone cookie bottoms. * Hone your decorating strategy.

Start with good dough and use a variety of cookie cutters to achieve perfect shapes. Cool cookies before applying toppings so they won’t melt or run. Creating effects with a variety of toppings will make it look like you spent days in the kitchen. * Use high-quality ingredients. Always start with high-quality, fresh ingredients for the best taste and appearance. Make sure your flour and raising agents haven’t sat in your cupboard too long, losing their effectiveness.

Here is a classic recipe to delight your family and guests.

Deluxe Sugar Cookies 1 cup butter or margarine, softened 1 cup sugar 1 egg, beaten 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract 1/2 teaspoon Pure Almond Extract 2 tablespoons milk 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder Frosting: 4 cups powdered sugar 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened 3 to 4 tablespoons milk 1 to 2 teaspoons Orange, Lemon or Peppermint Extract, to taste Assorted Food Coloring Cookies: Combine butter, sugar, egg, extracts and milk in large bowl. Stir in flour and baking powder; mix well.

Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm (about 2 hours). Heat oven to 400 F. On lightly floured surface, roll dough one third at a time to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with floured cookie cutter. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 6 to 9 minutes or until edges are light brown. Immediately remove to cool on wire rack.

Frosting: Combine all ingredients; beat until smooth.

Retirement Planning If you’re like many Americans, retirement planning may not be high on your “to-do” list.

When life is busy and you’re shouldering the burden of looking out for yourself and your family, setting up a retirement plan can slide down the priority list - especially if you’re hoping it will somehow be easier in a year, two or more.

But if you look at the root causes of inertia behind retirement planning, it’s clear how the effects from your behavior can be significant. Below are some insights to help you get on track and better understand the kinds of behaviors that can get in the way of planning for your financial future.

1. Put simply, it’s overwhelming. Saving for retirement can feel open-ended and ambiguous, in large part because it’s difficult to predict just how much you’ll need. Adding to the stress

The good news is there are on-line calculators that can assist you in determining what your future needs may entail.

2. We procrastinate planning for retirement.

pork chops of one-inch thickness. Dice in three red delicious apples and a small yellow onion.

Mix up then add in 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar, 1/4 cup water, 3 tablespoons brown sugar and cinnamon, salt and pepper to taste. Cook on low for four to five hours, serving with crispy French bread that can mop up the drippings.

Some comfort foods are hugely rooted in nostalgia. Others are just so enjoyably crispy, crunchy, chewy, sweet or savory, they bring a smile as soon as we tuck in. * Apple and cheddar pasta bake: Create a sauce by sauteing two cups of chopped, peeled, tart cooking apples with 1/2 cup chopped sweet onion and 3 tablespoons butter. Stir in 3 tablespoons flour, 3 teaspoons thyme, salt and pepper, 1/2 cup apple cider, and 2 cups of whole milk, melting in one 23-ounce package of softened cream cheese and 1/2 cup of shredded white cheddar.

Add the melted sauce to 12 oz. of your favorite cooked pasta, sprinkle with panko crumbs sauteed in butter and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. * Slow-cooked apple pork chops: In your crockpot, place three to four boneless center-cut

* Slow-cooked spicy apples: Peel and slice six Granny Smith apples into your crockpot. Add 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 2 tablespoons butter, 3 tablespoons cornstarch and cinnamon, nutmeg and salt to taste. Home Sweet Home The house flipping show I watched with my family last night was both entertaining and provacative; you may entertain the fantasy of flipping a house while unleashing your creative side with hopes of potentially hitting that profitable home run by selling the home for a crazy profit. The reality of house flipping is a bit more complex and risky. I I’ve watched hundreds of house flipping shows and if any of my flips had come out that easy I would be relaxing at a nice resort right now!

My husband and I have flipped many homes over the years and here are a few things I have learned.

• Get a building permit if required: Failing to do so can lead to major headaches like lawsuits, fines and could jeopardize financing.

• Know your Neighborhood: Remember who your intended buyer is and cater to their needs. Is it a family neighborhood or a 55+ community?

• Don’t Always Expect A Profit: You aren’t guaranteed a profit, so be prepared to break even or maybe even lose on that deal.

• Don’t Over Improve: I’ve done this…and it

has hurt me in the long run.

Stick with the essentials and focus on the essential repairs.

• Hire A Professional: Especially when it comes to electrical, plumbing and HVAC repairs. Unless you are a qualified professional, take on other projects such as painting and picking out finishes.

• Curb Appeal: This is the first thing people see and they will judge you on how well it has turned out. Also, remember to upkeep the landscape while the house is on the market.

People are always driving by and an unkempt yard could push them away.

House flipping can look and be a great side business, but most of the time realty shows do not show just how demanding and difficult this can be. If you are still in the market for this, just be prepared, knowledgeable and flexible for whatever may come your way.

Where’s My Flying Car?

Do you remember being a child, sitting in front of a glowing television? Eyes wide, legs crossed and a little bowl of marshmallow-filled breakfast cereal in front of you? The familiar theme song would play, and there they’d be - that futuristic family in a flying cartoon car. It was an incredible sight, one that filled us with wonder and excitement, and the hope of having our very own airborne automobile by 2020. While we wait for that innovation to come to mass-market fruition, the reality of putting your car on autopilot from A to B is right around the corner.

There has been plenty of advancement in tools to downplay distracted driving - think Bluetooth, “Do Not Disturb” and similar functions for our mobile devices. It’s too bad there hasn’t been a way to keep our eyes off the other drivers. More than half say that other people’s bad driving is their top distraction on the road.

3. Expectation: Cars that can take care of themselves.

Nearly half of Americans would love to see their cars equipped with self-maintenance capabilities.

In reality, today’s maintenance technology can predict things like how far you can go until your next oil change. Now just imagine ... how easy would it be if your car couldn’t just tell you it’s time to take it in, but get the job done for you?

4. Expectation: Driverless vehicles for everyone.

Autonomous vehicle technology is certainly speeding forward, and there are some who argue it will help create a safer drive down the road.

The survey found that men are nearly twice as likely to opt for self-driving capabilities as women.

There’s no telling how long it will take to get us to a flying future, or even a fully self-driving one but we can expect some fascinating futuristic tech to come.

Whether you’re expecting your first child or you’ve been around the baby block a few times before, there are always a lot of questions when preparing for parenthood. Feeding often tops the list, leaving moms puzzled at which are the best ways to nourish their little ones.
