From Me To You... It’s January already and you know what that means? Resolutions! Ideas of things you want to improve upon, or achieve, in the next calendar year.
I usually try not to make any resolutions because I feel I am setting myself up for failure. If they were things I could do, wouldn’t I already be doing them? However, I am always up for a good challenge, so this year I am determined to try and run a 5k. Oh boy, now I’ve put it out there for everyone to see. I have many friends who run, they do 5ks, 10ks and I even know a couple who ran a marathon this year. (Well she was disappointed in herself as she only did the half because she had no time to train, but for heavens sakes if I could run 13 miles without training I would be pleased as punch!) In order to see if 5 kilometers was even possible I tried running 3 to start. I would say I managed 2/3s of it at a decent pace and had to walk the rest. In my humble opinion that’s how far a normal person goes without training. In theory I am fit enough to do the race, but my stamina is what gets me. I have been working out consistently over the last year and my strength has improved dramatically (not to brag but I can lift over 100lbs with my legs and a whopping 45lbs with my puny arms) and health-wise I am ready. Now I have to increase the dreaded cardio to get my lungs to stop screaming at the mile mark.
realized it was a 5k up into the Estrellas before the 17 obstacles my stomach plummeted. I had no choice at that point, it was run or get trampled under the enthusiastic feet of the other runners. I got through the race and thought the easy part was in front of me. Boy was I wrong, here came the obstacles. The first obstacle was a swim under logs in a pool filled with water and ice. Ice! Fine. Then came a tunnel. In the ground. I took one look at the tiny hole in the ground and thought, “There is no way I can fit in there!” But I did. And then I found some relief. It was quiet and dark in there. No-one to see if I was moving. So I rested my head and relaxed. Until I heard the next contestant behind me army crawling towards my refuge. The race ended with a leap over a fire pit. At that point I couldn’t imagine jumping over anything but somehow I managed. I am determined to train and not to repeat my mistakes next time. One might even call that a resolution.

I have done a 5k in the past, but I think I was so traumatized by the experience it has me a little gun shy. I signed up for the Gladiator 5k Fun Run for charity - and to be honest because my friend and I had drunk a glass of wine or two and thought it would be a great idea. We planned on training and of course did nothing to prepare. So when the day loomed over me, I knew I was in trouble. When I got to the course and Estrella Publishing - The Park magazine

Up, Up And Away! Temps have cooled off in Phoenix. The sun will be out early in January 2020 when the hot air balloon races and Street FoodFest return to the Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Arizona. For the third year, the Goodyear Ballpark will play host to the 9th Annual Arizona Balloon Classic featuring the Street FoodFest and will benefit the Valley of the Sun United Way as a Community Partner. The Valley of the Sun United Way’s mission is to champion youth success and break the cycle of poverty for Valley families. “We fight to end hunger in the classroom, to end homelessness, and to put a stop to financial instability.” A portion of ticket sales will go directly back to the Valley of the Sun United Way programs. The Arizona Balloon Classic is Arizona’s premier hot air balloon race & festival and will attract up to 20,000 fans and consumers. In 2020, the Arizona Balloon Classic will consist of multiple “Hare and Hound” Hot Air Balloon races. Actual hot air balloon racing consists of multiple competitions in order to get the closest to the center of a target, which will determine who the winner of the “Race” is. The “Hare” balloon leaves first to place the “Target” and the rest of the balloons; the “Hounds” chase the “Hare” to the target. The “Hound” balloons are subjected to dropping markers onto a large target on the ground. The closer the marker is to the center of the target; the better chances of qualifying for

Races will be open to the public on Saturday, January 25th and Sunday, January 26th. A Facebook group is a page created for an organization, community or business to promote activities. Users can then join the group and post their thoughts on a wall and interact through discussion threads. Groups are a great way to connect with friends and neighbors and have discussions that are relevant to your community such a local business, school activities, criminal activities, lost fur babies, request recommendations, etc.... The main purpose of groups is to help Facebook users socialize around any topic in their community. Once inside the Group, Facebook works only slightly different than your profile. A Group does not use the timeline but rather displays posts in direct chronological order, similar to the pretimeline manner. Also, members of the Group can see who has seen a post, which is a unique feature for Group accounts. The Park magazine has established and facilitates a community Facebook Group for Litchfield Park called Litchfield Matters. All residents and people with a connection to the community are welcome to join this FB group. It is highly recommended that you avoid discussions associated with politics, religion and other sensitive topics which can make some group members feel unwelcome or uncomfortable.
Standard rules such as Be Kind and Courteous, No Hate Speech or Bullying, No Promotions or Spam, and Respect Everyone’s Privacy. The only business promotions that are permitted are those that support and sponsor The Hamlet magazine, bringing it to the community at no charge to the residents.
Please be sure to join us at LITCHFIELD MATTERS Facebook Group: www.facebook.com/groups/LitchfieldMatters. Once you join, you can then SHARE / INVITE your friends, family members, and neighbors.

The Right Pill While the effort to sustain better overall health is commendable, there is skepticism among healthcare experts regarding the medical benefits of dietary supplements. When caring for your health, it’s important to know the critical differences between prescription medicine, overthe-counter medicine and dietary supplements.
Prescription medicine is a pharmaceutical drug that legally requires a medical prescription to be dispensed. In the United States, before prescription medicine can be marketed and sold it must be tested rigorously and deemed safe, effective and manufactured to high-quality drug standards by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The prerequisite of medical practitioner oversight reflects the potential benefits and risks of prescription medicine and the importance of taking it appropriately.
are “products taken by mouth that contain a dietary ingredient such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and herbs or botanicals, as well as other substances that can be used to supplement the diet.” Dietary supplements can sound very appealing as they promote hope and possibilities. In part, this is because advertising of dietary supplements is not subject to the restrictions and disclosures of prescription drug advertising. Consumers need to know that when a product label says it “may work,” it hasn’t necessarily proven to the FDA that it is effective. With so many options and perceived “solutions” in front of consumers today, it’s critical that you check with your healthcare professional if you have a condition that requires a “therapy.” Only a healthcare practitioner should be providing medical guidance on what you should take given your specific medical needs and history.
Over-the-counter (OTC) drugs are drugs that consumers can use without prescription, based on the assumed ability of the consumer to selfdiagnose the condition and then use the OTC drug by themselves without medical monitoring. OTC drug candidates are also assessed by the FDA for safety and effectiveness. Often drug manufacturers submit data to the FDA showing a drug is appropriate for self-administration accompanied by studies showing that the product’s labeling can be read, understood, and followed by the consumer without the guidance of a health care provider. Additionally, concerns about side effects can sometimes be managed by approving OTC drugs at lower doses than their prescription counterparts. Dietary supplements are not prescription drugs. Rather, they are classified by the FDA as food. As such, they are not intended to treat disease and their safety, efficacy and manufacturing quality have not been reviewed or approved by the FDA as required for drugs.Dietary supplements Estrella Publishing - The Park magazine

Litchfield Park Girl Scout Earns Prestigious Gold Award
Emma Parry, a Litchfield Park Girl Scout with Girl Scouts-Arizona Cactus-Pine Council, lives her life at center stage. “I’ve been involved in theater since my freshman year at Agua Fria High School, and it quickly helped me break out of my shy and nervous shell,” says Parry. “Being a part of my school’s theater program has been one of my favorite parts of high school!” Parry was able to blend her passion for theater into her 13-year involvement with Girl Scouts, using it to help her earn her Gold Award – the most prestigious award available to girls. The Gold Award requires a minimum of 80 hours of work on a project that creates a sustainable solution to a problem that girls have noticed in their communities. Parry identified that problem as a lack of involvement in her high school’s theater program, and students simultaneously missing out on its benefits.
for local programs to put it on for themselves. Her website includes the free script, stepby-step instructions for assembling a backdrop and information for making costumes. “I hope my project can be shared with atrisk youth, who would greatly benefit from theater programs,” says Parry. “Lower-income areas usually don’t have these programs because of a lack of resources and funds, which is why I made my project available for free on my website.” Parry will be pinned with her Gold Award at the GSACPC High Awards ceremony in March 2020. For more information on earning the Gold Award or Girl Scouts in Arizona, visit www.girlscoutsaz.org. To read more about Parry’s Gold Award project, visit her website at gotheatregold.wordpress.com. Submitted by Annelise Krafft
“I noticed fewer and fewer people were coming out to theater events and not auditioning for performances every year,” says Parry. “Theater was an important aspect for me coming out of my shell and becoming more confident, and I wanted to find a way to get more people involved in the arts.” Parry dedicated her Gold Award project to improving general interest in her school’s theater program, and focused on making young people more aware of local opportunities in her community. Most of all, Parry wanted to spread the message of inclusion and kindness. “I wrote an anti-bullying one-act play using the characters from ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ with the help of 20 friends from my school’s theater program,” says Parry. “We were able to perform it for a group of 40 special needs students in our school’s black box theater, and talked at the end about why theater is so important to each of us. Of the 40 students, 26 said they wanted to pursue theater in the future.” Parry also made a website with more information on her one-act play, including all the materials needed Estrella Publishing - The Park magazine

Why The Glass Matters Wine connoisseurs know it makes a big difference how your wine is served. From the correct temperature to the glass you drink from, how any wine is presented can change the entire experience. And it’s not just about aesthetics - the size and shape of the glass affects not just how the wine responds to its environment (exposure to oxygen and temperature, for example), but how we drink it. The way you hold the glass, how you tilt your head (consider a martini glass versus a wine glass), where your nose is centered as you sip can all impact your experience of the wine. What do you need to know so your guests will experience your wine at its very best? Here are some guidelines. Red wines-In general, the best glasses to enhance the bigger and bolder flavors of most red wines should be taller and have a larger bowl
than glasses meant for serving lighter or more delicate wines. Larger glasses allow a wine to breathe more and permit the wine’s flavors and aromas to develop more fully. White wines-The ideal glass for most white wines will be U-shaped, with a smaller bowl than when serving red wines. One of the reasons is that it helps prevent the wine from warming up too quickly, as whites are best served somewhat chilled. The more upright shape of the glass also allows aromas to be released sufficiently - without losing any aroma - for these lighter wines. Sparkling wines-When serving champagne, prosecco or other sparkling wines to your guests, flutes or a tulip shaped glass are recommended. These glass shapes allow the chilled wine to stay cooler longer. Whereas a wider glass would offer too much surface area, letting the delightful bubbles fizzle out more quickly. A narrower glass helps to preserve the carbonation of your sparkling wine longer.

Resolutions You Can Keep Are you feeling reluctant to create New Year’s Resolutions? After years of failed resolutions past, I don’t blame you. However, if you pick the right resolutions, you’ll face the New Year head on, ready to make good on your big plans from January 1 all the way to December 31. Here are seven resolutions that you can keep and that will help you achieve big strides towards your fitness goals in 2020:
Resolution 4: Swap One Meal By swapping out one of your daily meals for a 1 or 2 scoop protein shake you’ll save yourself a few hundred calories each day while providing your muscles with much needed protein. If you only choose to make one resolution this year make it this one – you’ll be astounded at the quick results this simple daily swap will deliver.
Resolution #1: Get Fishy Giving your health a boost doesn’t have to take an incredible amount of time. With this resolution, it doesn’t even take will power. Enjoy fish for dinner once a week, and you’ll protect your heart from disease and increase your chances for a longer life. Go with salmon, trout, flounder, or tuna.
Resolution 5: Push Your Body Know that half marathon you’ve been considering? Want to stop feeling the need to eat cake at every birthday party you attend— even when the cake is dry? This is the year you train properly for that race, say no to cake on occasion, and take up mountain climbing. Find someone with the same goal, make a plan to reach the goal, and get started.
Resolution #2: Lather Up You want your skin to look young and healthy, so this is the year you do something about it. Make it part of your routine to spread some sunshielding lotion on your face, arms, and neck. It’ll save your skin so it’ll look its best in years to come and prevent skin cancer.
Resolution 6: Down More H2O A great way to make strides toward your watery goal is to fill up the biggest water bottle you can find and go at it. Preferably, you can drink from something that holds 2.2 liters (9 cups), as all you’ll need is a single fill up in the morning to stay hydrated all day long.
Resolution #3: Sweat in the AM One way to increase your odds for exercising each day is to knock it out first thing in the morning. This year, resolve to exercise right after waking up.
Resolution 7: Stretch Every Day One of the best ways to avoid injury, as we age, is to take a few minutes to stretch daily. This is most effectively done after you have warmed up and before you begin the intense portion of your routine. By taking the best care of your muscles, with stretching, you’ll avoid taking time off for injury recovery and will be able to accomplish your goals quicker.
