From Me To You... The world is full of distractions. As I sit down to write this column, for example, I am listening to music (brain building Grieg but admittedly it is a distraction), looking out the window at my neighbors washing their vehicle, smelling my breakfast cooling on the counter, and a myriad of other small things. One distraction that I love is television. In particular cooking shows. There is nothing more enjoyable to me than watching other people cook and thinking that if I had the time or the patience I too could make a perfect Mille Feuille or Beef Wellington. I am also realistic enough to know that I probably shouldn’t try them if I want to keep the waistline I have worked so hard for. I know some people who cook for others and do not eat anything themselves. Not me. I am the ‘taste a little as you cook then dig in when it is ready’ kind of person. One cooking show that I delight in is The Great British Baking Show. Not only is there a cornucopia of delightful food, but the contestants are a joy to watch. They all get their instructions and off they go. Then something wonderful happens. They start to help each other. Even the hosts get in on the act. “What can I do to help dear?” They often ask, grabbing a large bowl or sifting an ingredient. And when the time draws to a close all the contestants jump into action. “I’m done, love, what can I do?” Or “Let me put those on your plate for you!” One time a contestant noticed an oven that had not been turned on and she helpfully told her fellow baker as she turned it up to the correct temperature. I love it! It is their competitive camaraderie that makes me smile. My husband doesn’t understand it at all, shaking his head in bemusement. “Don’t they realize this is a competition?” he mumbles under his breath as he walks away.

time to get back into the kitchen and whip up a country loaf. In my youth I baked all the time. I joke about Mille Feuille but I can actually make it, rough puff pastry and all. Now this baking occurred at a different altitude and hemisphere so the ingredients are not at all the same. Did you know that flour contains different amounts of gluten depending on where you are in the world?? Something to be aware of if you are making bread. Needless to say, my recipes no longer work, so I scoured the internet and set to baking. The first day (I had forgotten how long it takes to make bread) yielded one sprained wrist (kneading accident), flour in my eyes and a slightly dense loaf. Not to be defeated I ate it with as much butter as I could slap on it and the next day I adjusted my kneading, proving and baking times and I managed to bake a pretty decent loaf of bread. I think I may try to make Beef Wellington after all. Someday...

Find us!

A Facebook group is a page created for an organization, community or business to promote activities. Users can then join the group and post their thoughts on a wall and interact through discussion threads. Groups are a great way to connect with friends and neighbors and have discussions that are relevant to your community such a local business, school activities, criminal activities, lost fur babies, request recommendations, etc.... The main purpose of groups is to help Facebook users socialize around any topic in their community. Once inside the Group, Facebook works only slightly different than your profile. A Group does not use the timeline but rather displays posts in direct chronological

order, similar to the pre-timeline manner. Also, members of the Group can see who has seen a post, which is a unique feature for Group accounts. The Park magazine has established and facilitates a community Facebook Group for Litchfield Park called Litchfield Matters. All residents and people with a connection to the community are welcome to join this FB group. It is highly recommended that you avoid discussions associated with politics, religion and other

sensitive topics which can make some group members feel unwelcome or uncomfortable. Standard rules such as Be Kind and Courteous, No Hate Speech or Bullying, No Promotions or Spam, and Respect Everyone’s Privacy. The only business promotions that are permitted are those that support and sponsor The Hamlet magazine, bringing it to the community at no charge to the residents. Please be sure to join us at LITCHFIELD MATTERS Facebook Group: www.facebook.com/groups/LitchfieldMatters. Once you join, you can then SHARE / INVITE your friends, family members, and neighbors.

Understanding Data Use With unlimited talk and text becoming more common offerings, what most of us are really paying for on our cellphone bills is data. You’re using mobile data whenever you’re not connected to Wi-Fi and doing things like browsing the web, using apps, checking social media, sending or receiving picture messages, and streaming music or videos. Here are a few important things to understand to make sure that you get the best service, at the best price, on your monthly data plan. How it’s measured Simply put, data usage is the amount of data you use in a billing cycle (usually a 30-day time frame). Your cellphone plan’s data is used whenever you use your phone’s internet connection to perform a task. Anytime you send email, download a photo, stream video, view a web page, or post on social media, your phone is sending or receiving data across your carrier’s network. A megabyte (MB) and the larger gigabyte (GB) are the units used for measuring data. Industry analysts have found that an average cellphone user consumes about 5GB of data per month. It’s hard to determine exactly how much data specific activities consume, since file sizes and download times can vary. To provide a general idea, it’s estimated that with 1GB of data, you can browse the Internet and

use social media for around 40 minutes a day, stream about 10 hours of music in a month, and view 1-2 movies a month. High-speed limits When a cell phone plan has a designated monthly allotment of data, it means that you’ll get optimal data speeds up until you have reached the limit. So, if your plan has a 3GB data limit, you can use up to 3GB of data at full speed. Once you go over that 3GB of data usage, you can expect to encounter slower data speeds. With that in mind, you might expect unlimited data plans to provide you with all of the best data you can possibly use in your billing cycle. But this is not the case. Most “unlimited” data plans actually have what is referred to as a “deprioritization threshold.” This is a cap on your high-speed data, meaning that if you reach the threshold (ranging anywhere from 20GB to 50GB) during a billing cycle you will actually be subject to slower data speeds. Choosing the right plan So, the first step in managing your data usage is being realistic about how much you really need. The best way is to track your usage through your cellphone carrier: most offer up-to-the-minute details on your data usage either online or through a mobile app. Then, seek out a carrier who offers plans that fit what you really use. Before you decide, read the fine print. Find out what, if any, caps are placed on your usage, or if there are fees for going over or changing your plan. By understanding your own needs and what your carrier specifically allows, you’ll have everything you need to get the data you require.

Scorpions!

Scorpions are a common nuisance pest in the Southwest Valley that are closely related to spiders, ticks, and mites. Although these pests are portrayed in Hollywood movies as being aggressive towards humans, scorpions try to avoid human contact and their well-known “stings” tend to be accidental. Most scorpion stings are like that of a bee sting, while others can be deadly and cause severe reactions. With 1,200 species of scorpions across the world, it is important to know what species might be lurking in your backyard and how you can avoid a run-in with them.

regions. Striped tail scorpions get their unique name from the dark brown stripes that line its tail. Like any other scorpion, this species is fastmoving.

Arizona Bark Scorpion The Arizona Bark Scorpion is the most wellknown species of scorpion living in North America. These scorpions can deliver a deadly sting and are one of a few species of scorpions that has a high level of neural venom that causes general illness for up to three days. As their name suggests, Arizona Bark Scorpions are native to Arizona but also inhabit Utah, New Mexico, and Nevada. These scorpions are yellow with horizontal lines, making it easier for them to blend in with their desert habitats.

Scorpions from the Southwestern United States are also known to enter structures through torn screens and holes and cracks in building exteriors, so it’s equally important to seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home with caulk and repair any damaged window and door screens. These pests also enter homes through poorly fitted garage and entry doors.

Scorpion Prevention To avoid run-ins with scorpions, eliminate harborage sites around your home, including woodpiles, trash and debris. Homeowners should also consider removing stones and landscape timbers from the property, and store firewood at least twenty feet from the home and at least five inches up off the ground.

This information Provided by Larry Cash, Estrella Mountain Pest Control, and the National Pest Management Association.

Arizona Hairy Scorpion This scorpion is the largest species living in the U.S., growing to sizes of up to 5.5 inches. Arizona hairy scorpions can be found in California, Nevada, and Utah and can capture small lizards living in the deserts due to its larger size. These scorpions have yellow legs and a brown body. Striped Tail Scorpion These southwestern U.S. scorpions are native to the Arizona and New Mexico Estrella Publishing - The Park magazine

Elevate Your Evening Whether you’re hosting a sit-down dinner, a familystyle meal or a cocktail party, offer unique food and drink choices to suit the season. A charcuterie board is a great start - all you need to add are some stand-out drinks to make an impression.

1. Create a charcuterie board. Charcuterie boards can be appetizers or the main attraction at a cocktail party. Select cured meats like salami, and prosciutto along with with spreadable choices like pate, plus an array of cheeses. Choose cheeses to appeal to every palate. Add sliced French bread and/or crackers, with accompaniments like olives or fruit. Round out the board with little dishes of mustard, honey or quince paste. Get creative as you arrange everything on a board or platter. The idea is to provide guests with a variety of seasonal flavors they can mix and match in fun ways. 2. Punch up your party. Instead of adding bartender to your multitude of host duties, make a delicious Rum Punch and empower your guests to serve themselves: Rum Punch Ingredients: 3 ounces Angostura 5 Year Rum 1.5 ounces lime juice 3 teaspoons brown cane sugar 1 dash Angostura orange bitters 4 dashes Angostura aromatic bitters Garnish: lime wedge, grated nutmeg, maraschino cherry Shake all ingredients and strain into ice-filled glass. Garnish with lime, cherry and nutmeg. 3. Sugar and spice and all things nice. For an 8 Estrella Publishing - The Park magazine

easy dessert you can make well in advance, offer guests a platter of chocolate truffles or fresh-baked cookies. Another fun option: Cut squares of ready-made puff pastry, add your favorite jam, fresh fruit, chocolate or nut spread, then fold the dough, seal with wet fingers and bake on parchment paper at 400 degrees for about 10 minutes.

Or instead of dessert, finish off a delightful evening by offering your guests a nightcap with some sweetness in a glass that doubles as dessert: Amarula Espresso Martini Ingredients: 1 shot vodka 1 shot Amarula Vanilla Spice Cream Liqueur 2 shots of espresso coffee 1 teaspoon caster sugar Shake coffee, vodka, Amarula Vanilla Spice and sugar together with cubed ice. Strain into a martini glass and finish off with a light dusting of cocoa. There’s no reason fall entertaining can’t have the same fun and flair as summer soirees. With great food and drink choices, the possibilities are endless.

Litchfield Park City Council October 4, 2019 Mayor Thomas L. Schoaf City of Litchfield Park 214 W. Wigwam Blvd Litchfield Park, AZ 85340 Dear Mayor Schoaf and Council, During my over nineteen years as an elected member of City Council for the City of Litchfield Park, I have always firmly positioned the needs of the City ahead of my own business and personal interests. Despite nearly two decades of effectively separating those two very different aspects of my life, City Attorney Susan Goodwin has advised me of her concerns regarding my participation in discussions and voting on the development of the city center. Ms. Goodwin felt that my ownership of three restaurants

adjacent to the city center property created an actual conflict of interest and at the very least, the perception of one. In a City Council meeting earlier in the year I clearly addressed all present on the record, stating that I would declare a conflict when I felt it was appropriate. After much internal debate, I have decided to tender my resignation from the office of elected City Council member for the City of Litchfield Park, effective today. I feel it is in the best interest of the city to have a full council of seven that is able to vigorously debate and vote on all issues involving the future city center. The matter is too important to not have all council members fully engage, nor do I desire to risk a deadlocked vote with an even number of council members. I wish my fellow council members well and I deeply appreciate having had the opportunity to serve with you. Sincerely yours, Peter E. Mahoney

Everyday Celebrations

If you look at most people’s calendars, the days that stand out are the big ones - national holidays, anniversaries, graduations - in other words, those occasions that almost require special parties, rituals or ceremonies. But the truth is, it’s the everyday moments that people remember, and that are worth cherishing. Why wait for a “big” reason to celebrate the everyday act of living? Here are just a few ways you and your friends or family can elevate the small but special events that truly make life wonderful. Making a new friend You recently met someone you think could become a great friend. It gets harder to make new friends as adults, so why not nurture your new relationship in a memorable way? Invite him or her over for a casual lunch.

Nailing that presentation You or your partner just pulled off an amazing presentation for a meeting at work after stressing about it for days, so why not celebrate all that hard work with a special dinner together? Enjoy your favorite cheeseburgers, pork chops, juicy

steak or filet mignon - tonight is a good night to enjoy a favorite meal as your reward. Mid-week birthday While you wait for the blow-out birthday plans scheduled for the weekend, don’t just let the big day pass by without any festivities at all. Too busy to bake? Pick up a dark chocolate cake - or at least some cupcakes - at your local grocery store or bakery. Girls’ lunch How long has it been since you last invited your best pals over for a visit, just because you felt like it? Why not throw together a quick lunch party on the weekend for a couple of your favorite friends? Serve take-out on your most beautiful dishes - spending time together is the most important part, so don’t stress about the food! Find ways to commemorate - and treasure - the simple, ordinary days that mean the world to you.

Slow Down!

break. Our minds are overloaded, left feeling like we are forgetting to do something. We should not be made to feel guilty about making choices without a purpose or deadline.

In an environment where technology is supposed to make our lives easier and save us time, why is it that we feel so rushed and frenzied about life? Maybe we are taking that saved time and doing more and more things, making our lives more hectic than ever. Day in and day out, we run on “the hamster wheel” and it gets faster and faster.

Slowing down may be looked at as a bit radical, but it has to be a conscious choice. We live in a world where frustration builds when the red light takes too long to change or the website doesn’t load instantly. Email, FB and twitter are checked 20+ times a day, and we lose sleep over an upcoming deadline.

Our jobs keep us uber busy, having to be more productive than our ‘neighbor’. The todo list at home never ends, we are always maintaining, fixing or upgrading something. We are encouraged to keep our kids busy, to make the most of their younger, impressionable educational years which leaves us shuffling them around all afternoon from school to clubs, sports and then violin lessons. Homemade costumes, birthday parties, even the Bougainvillea needs our constant attention, ouch! The percentage of children eating dinner “on-the-go” is staggering.

Life doesn’t have to be crazy. We just need to embrace the change and do the slowing down ourselves. Rebel against this hectic lifestyle, slow down, be in the moment and enjoy life.

We all go on living as if this is normal, and it’s the way it’s supposed to be. Are you ok with this fast paced frenzy? Most times we are left feeling defeated and without any sense of completion. If all of this is what we are supposed to be doing, then why are so many people unhappy? We see it in our everyday living, it’s not easy to get off the hamster wheel, and habits are hard to

Start to single-task versus multi-task. If the slow lane is looking more appealing, here’s how to get there: -choose 3 things to accomplish daily -be present -learn to say “no” and make good choices -disconnect from time to time -embrace quality over quantity -spend time with people you love -breathe Letting go can be incredibly liberating and so can the slow speed on the hamster wheel! Home Safety

While online shopping offers up a convenient way to purchase holiday gifts, many consumers are concerned about their delivered packages going missing. Ensuring your online holiday purchases are securely delivered can make your cyber shopping experience even more rewarding and stress free. Here are five tips that will keep your packages safe and your holidays happy. 1. Get deliveries straight to your garage with Key by Amazon Online retailers such as Amazon serve as a popular holiday shopping destination. This season you can get your Prime packages delivered safely and securely right in your garage with Key by Amazon in-garage delivery. Amazon recently launched the new service to provide Prime members in 50 cities and surrounding areas with the option to select in-garage delivery at checkout. 2. Give specific delivery instructions Most delivery services allow customers to set instructions. Ask your mail carrier to knock or ring the doorbell so that you are immediately alerted when a package arrives at your door. If snow, rain or any other weather issue is a concern, consider requesting that you mail carrier drop off packages in an out-of-sight dry spot. Get creative with these drop-off locations and use other delivery points such as back porches. 3. Sign up for delivery alert Major mail carriers and delivery services have systems for tracking packages. You can use tracking numbers to determine where an item is, and when it should be delivered. Check with your delivery provider to see if you can sign up 16 Estrella Publishing - The Park magazine

for alerts via email or text message for when your package is shipped, out for delivery and delivered. 4. Team up with a neighbor Work with a trustworthy neighbor to mutually look after each other’s packages. If a neighbor is home during an anticipated delivery, ask permission to have packages sent to their address or have them hold deliveries that come to your front door. Return the favor whenever possible, and bake a holiday treat or give a small thank-you gift to show your appreciation. 5. Request a signature If you are ordering expensive items online, it is a smart idea to require a signature for delivery. By requesting a signature before a package is released, you can ensure that your online purchases are never left unattended. Holiday shopping is already stressful. Give yourself the gift of peace by trying out some of these package delivery tips, and spend more time enjoying the moments that matter.

Not Ready For Fido?

Five ways to support shelter animals if you’re not ready to adopt 1. Donate money or product. Many animal shelters and rescue organizations have direct donation links posted on their websites. Monetary

donations go toward pet food, medical attention and vaccines for the animals. Animal shelters and rescue organizations also often create Amazon wish lists with desired products. Shelters typically ask for pet treats, toys and grooming supplies.

2. Provide a temporary home. An increased number of animals placed in shelters need foster care before they are ready to find their forever homes. Foster needs range from post-op surgical care to puppy growth care and medical support. Food, medication and other supplies are typically provided when fostering, and the length of time a foster pet may stay in your home varies depending on the animal’s needs. Contact your local shelter to fill out an application. Once approved, your local shelter will work closely with you to find the right foster pet for your household. 3. Volunteer at your local shelter or rescue organization. Animal shelters and rescue organizations offer numerous volunteer roles, such as dog walkers, adoption support and training support. Many positions don’t require prior experience and can be applied for on your local shelter or rescue organization’s website. Volunteer positions vary in expectations and demand, so there is a position for everyone. 4. Take photos of adoptable pets. Help animals find homes sooner by taking adoption photos for local shelters. Many people search for adoptable pets online, and with a great profile picture, animals have a greater chance at being adopted. 5. Become an advocate. Follow animal shelters and rescue organizations on social media and reshare their content. Talk to your family and friends about the importance of caring for shelter pets while they await their forever homes and share how they can help.
