From Me To You...

I have come to the conclusion that I live in a very interesting state. Why? Because nearly everyone here is a transplant. There are very few people born and bred in Arizona. It is a destination state - a place to retire to, certainly, but also a place where the real estate is affordable and the cost of living is comparatively low. A place people migrate to because of the weather at home and the weather here.

Personally I will never forget my last winter in NY when the wind chill had our temperature at minus 17 degrees Fahrenheit. As I shovelled the snow off our sidewalk at 9 months pregnant, (I did this because I discovered that I am liable for accidents happening on the sidewalk in front of our house!) I decided then and there that it would be my last year doing so.

So here we are in this sunny climate, separated form our extended family. I am used to this way of life, having immigrated from the UK at 21, but my husband and most people here are not. It leaves you with a feeling of being slightly adrift.

There is no anchor to stabilize you, or hold you back. Suddenly the question of “Whose house do we go to for Thanksgiving?” or “Why does Aunt Doris always get Passover/Easter?” becomes moot. Now we ask, “What do you want to do this holiday?” Or my favorite, “Where are we making reservations this year?” Sometimes we open our home to friends and family who are also without a

destination, sometimes it is just us.

The downside to the situation, I have found, is that there is no tribe who have to be there when you call. No sister-in-law who will grudgingly watch the kids if you have an emergency, or a gaggle of cousins for the kids to play with and grow up with and build family memories with.

That is a distinct disadvantage.

As time goes by we make connections, build our own tribe if you like. I have found that as I get older I am more circumspect about choosing those friends. People no longer become my companion because our children are the same age, or do the same extracurricular activity. That is a similarity of circumstance and I have found that it is not a good indicator of folk who share your values and goals. Being in a group of people who live a different lifestyle is never comfortable.

So over time my circle has ebbed and flowed into a solid core of people I love. I can truly say that they are the family I choose, not the ones given to me, and I am content. Some of them have children and some do not. Some own their own businesses, some work for ‘the man’ and a lucky few have retired. The one thing they all have in common is me and I am thankful for them.

Last month a longtime friend who had moved out of state was visiting for my daughter’s wedding, and as she left something she said struck me profoundly. She said that she could see I was surrounded by people who cared for me and that she was glad. She could relax knowing that even though she was no longer around the corner, I had people who would, and did, step up to fill the void she left. Friends who always help when I need it, whether I ask or not. These friends have become my family and I am so grateful I have found them and they have found me.

Home Sweet Home Whether your plans include renovating one room, a floor or your entire home, there’s no denying that a renovation project greatly increases the scope of the work to be done - and the expense.

And because of that, it’s incredibly important to have your entire plan laid out before you begin.

After all, the last thing you want to do is renovate your latest renovation. To be sure you’re ready for the renovation project of your dreams, apply the tips below. * Finalize your goals. The largest projects are more successful when they are planned down to the finest details. Decide if you’re trying to up the resale value, add more space, create a hobby area or finally build the bathroom you deserve. * Determine if you need to update/replace core systems. Your air conditioning unit, water softener and furnace are all vital components in your home. However, these systems eventually

need replacement as well, and your home renovation could be the perfect time to tackle this task. * Set your budget. Many homeowners have no idea what a renovation project will cost and even if they do, unexpected expenses can appear very quickly. If you are working with a contractor, they should be able to give you a fairly accurate estimation of how much your project will cost.

However, it’s still a good idea to determine what your absolute spending ceiling is for the project and not go above it. * Organize your calendar. Senior Living As people age, they become more likely to develop osteoporosis, a disease that occurs when bones lose density and mass, which can cause them to be brittle, weak and easily broken.

Osteoporotic bone breaks most often occur in the hip, spine or wrist, but other bones can break too.

Beyond significant, often permanent pain, these fractures can have many other consequences, including frailty and limited mobility, complications related to the broken bone or the surgery to repair it, and the necessity of long-term care.

Talking to your doctor will help ensure you get the test that may be needed to correctly diagnosis osteoporosis, which may be a simple bone mineral density (BMD) test like a DEXA scan.

BMD tests can identify osteoporosis before a broken bone occurs and measure your response to treatment.

The NOF recommends BMD tests for women age 65 or older and men age 70 or older.

Osteoporosis is more common in women than men, and more common after menopause, so women should begin talking to their doctor

about osteoporosis before menopause. Anyone with several risk factors - controllable and uncontrollable - should also discuss it at a younger age than the general guidelines.

Consider asking your doctor if you should complete a bone density test to determine how healthy your bones are. If you’re a UnitedHealthcare member, you might get a call offering an osteoporosis screening that wouldn’t require a prescription from your doctor.

Your doctor will discuss your test with you, and help you interpret the results. Results are reported using T-scores, which show how much less dense your bones are than those of a healthy 30-year-old. A T-score of -1.0 or above is normal bone density, and a T-score of -2.5 or below is a diagnosis of osteoporosis, according to the World Health Organization. Although not everyone who has low bone mass will develop osteoporosis, those with low bone mass are at higher risk.

There is no one single way to ensure healthy bones, but there are many great habits that can put you on the right path. Incorporate enough calcium and vitamin D in your diet; avoid smoking and drinking; maintain a regular exercise routine; and take steps to minimize your risk of falls.

Getting your house in order can be a struggle, especially as we age. Sorting through decades of belongings is often emotional and stressful, as questions and decisions pile up: Is this jewelry valuable? What should I do with all these tools I no longer use? Will this china set have sentimental value to my children?

But while it can be exhausting, this effort to declutter and simplify can be worthwhile, not only for our homes but also for our health. Getting rid of things you no longer need or want may have a positive effect on mental health and can also make for a safer environment. Decluttering can help keep paths clear and obstacles to a minimum. A tidy home can also mean we’re more likely to invite people over - prompting interactions that can help alleviate feelings of depression and isolation that can accompany aging.

With these tips, decluttering doesn’t need to be a dreaded task: * Don’t judge yourself. It’s harder to decide what to do with items that have been in the family for

generations than it might be for millennials to decide what to do with items from their college years. * Take it one room at a time. The kitchen is a good place to start the decluttering process, because throwing away chipped dishes and expired spices isn’t as taxing as wading through boxes of potentially important paperwork or personal items. Once you feel good about your progress in the kitchen, move on to tackle the garage, office and other spaces where belongings tend to pile up. Like closets! * Keep only what you wear the most. Pick a handful of favorite outfits for everyday wear, social outings and special occasions, seasonal wear and wardrobe staples, and donate the rest. If it’s hard to part with handmade or other sentimental items, consider finding creative ways to remember them, such as making a memory quilt of old T-shirts or photographing special items for an album and then letting them go. * Stop the build-up before it begins. Keep a recycling bin handy for unwanted credit card offers and coupon packs before they enter the house. Eco-Cycle has some tips to cull the tide of junk mail, and mobile apps like Evernote can help collect and digitize recipes, warranties, instruction manuals and memorabilia to clear away more piles of paper.

At the end of the day, it’s OK to hang on to belongings that are near and dear to you. But for items that don’t hold sentimental or functional value, kick-start a decluttering mission today so you can enjoy a tidier, safer home tomorrow.

If you’re an American woman today, chances are your busy lifestyle is preventing you from seeking out the regular check-ups and screenings so important to maintaining your health. And that’s true regardless of your economic status or whether you live in a rural, urban or suburban area. So reports a recent HealthiHer survey showing that only 66 percent of U.S. women ages 30 to 60 feel “somewhat in control” of their own health.

“Women today wear many hats - they’re wives, mothers, caregivers, employees, business leaders and breadwinners, often at the same time,” says Wendy Lund, CEO of leading communications agency, GCI Health. “And this constant juggling can come at the cost of our own health.”

* Try online resources. An annual in-person physical is always recommended, but health issues in between check-ups can often be taken care of through online sites that diagnose issues through questionnaires or video chats - then prescribe medicine or other therapies without need of an office visit. * Make exercise a no-brainer. As the saying goes, sitting is the new smoking. If you don’t make daily movement of some sort a priority in your life you’re putting your physical and emotional health at substantial risk.

This is an investment in both our health and the health of our families. Women who don’t take care of themselves are not going to be around or it will affect their ability to care for their loved ones. The good news? The survey also reveals that 79 percent of respondents see positive change as achievable. The HealthiHer movement aims to give women the tools they need to make such changes at home, at work or in their communities. If you’re among those struggling to take good care of yourself because of other obligations, consider how these suggestions might help. * Truth: You can’t help others without caring for yourself. That same principle applies to your general health; you must maintain your own energy and well-being so you can stay around to be an effective mom, wife, daughter, sister and/or friend. * Take stress seriously. While not all stress is bad, long-term unrelieved stress can have major adverse effects on your health, reducing the effectiveness of your immune, digestive, sleep and reproductive systems. Recognize the risks, plan methods for fighting stress and carve out time for exercise, sleep, and/or other remedies.

Positive Parenting For moms, back to school means transitioning back into routines filled with more activities to shuttle kids and their friends to and from, more homework to keep track of and more chaos to deal with at home. But with a little preparation and an arsenal of secret weapons, moms can get through it, even if it’s simply sharing strategies so they know they’re not alone.

Here are some of the other ways moms say they cope with everything from household chaos to mealtime madness.

Who needs sleep? Unfortunately, most moms handle chaos during the day and revisit other responsibilities late at night after kids are in bed.

In fact, 61 percent have stayed up until midnight or later to finish chores or responsibilities they couldn’t complete during the day. More than 1 in 4 moms have stayed up until 2 a.m. or later.

Nodding off at work. Late nights can take a toll on moms who need to be up and “on” in front of coworkers during the day. Half of working moms concede they’ve been so exhausted from lack of

sleep that they’ve taken a nap at the office, and onethird of them confess to taking on-the-job snoozes more than once.

Sanity-keeping strategies. Moms turn to many strategies to minimize the daily crisis at home.

Their most common ways are prioritizing what’s important (81 percent) and posting lists such as chores and to-dos (73 percent). More than a third (34 percent) look to mom blogs for tips.

Send help now! Some moms end up turning a blind eye to what’s under the surface - literally.

Nearly a quarter (24 percent) admit they can see just half or less of their floors clearly, meaning parts of the floor that aren’t covered with toys, paper or furniture. Moms crave help so often, nearly half (48 percent) agree they would choose a full day of housekeeping and caretaking versus a full day of spa treatments.

Defusing dinnertime drama. Pizza is more than a convenience; it’s a peacemaker. Eighty percent of moms believe pizza would quiet their kids quicker than an air horn, providing one less battle to get everyone through the school year. One delicious slice at a time.

Drink Up!

Staying hydrated is a necessity, but sometimes it’s difficult to tell when your body needs water, especially during warmer months.

Experts say on average men need 15 cups (3.6 liters) and women need 11 cups (2.6 liters) of water per day. Our bodies are about 60 percent water, and just losing 1.5 percent can be the tipping point for mild dehydration. Culligan International, a world leader in the treatment of water, is offering tips to keep you and your people well hydrated.

1. Bring water on the go. Going to work, the park, the pool or the library? Wherever you are headed, always bring a reusable water bottle.

This goes for your people too. Allowing young children to pick a favorite water bottle provides added incentive to take frequent water breaks.

Set the water bottles in a high-traffic area or close to the door so you don’t forget them when leaving home. And refill, refill, refill whenever empty.

Back 2 School Approximately 55 million students in the U.S. will head back to class soon. From dealing with firstday jitters to shopping for school supplies, it’s an exciting and chaotic time.

Reports show a correlation, however, between the start of school and student performance early positive school experience leads to better emotional well-being and academic achievement.

So, the pressure is on for parents to get it right.

A little advance planning can go a long way toward making sure the transition is smooth for everyone.

1. Start the school night bedtime routine at least a week before the first day. It gives your child’s body clock time to adjust when there are fewer distractions. Plus, good rest the night before will eliminate stressful mornings on school days.

2. Fuel them up with a protein-packed breakfast.

Kids and teens who have a good breakfast are more focused, perform better in school and make healthier food choices throughout the day.

Without breakfast, kids (and their parents) can become irritable, distracted and tired.

3. Involve the family in meal planning for the week ahead. This way everyone gets to request a favorite dish and the detailed shopping list makes getting in and out of the grocery store more efficient.

When school work becomes a family activity instead of a solo chore, kids are more engaged in what they’re learning.

5. Consider using an app to create a family calendar for tracking everyone’s deadlines, activities and commitments. Getting your kids to choose which app you use will help them take ownership of their assignments. Some apps even feature reward systems to motivate family members to complete tasks.

6. Germs show up to school just like your kids do, so schedule those annual exams. Be sure your children are up to date on their vaccinations, and talk with your pediatrician about ways to keep them healthy throughout the year.
