From Me To You...

Welcome to the June edition of The Hamlet.

As a child my parents were god-like to me. They knew everything. They could kiss away my injuries, drive me anywhere without getting lost and answer all my questions with sincerity and authority. Remember, this was before Google which makes that feat even more impressive.

Then the teenage years arrived. I was full of angst and the belief that I absolutely, positively knew everything. By default this meant that my heretofore adored parents now knew nothing. Less than nothing, because they were embarrassing me with their lack of intelligence.

I know, I am cringing too as I write this. I was horrible and my only saving grace is that I am not alone. Look in the mirror, you know you were a piece of work as a teenager too.

Let us fast-forward to the time of my awakening, or as I like to call it parenting 101. I had these squealing, crying, frustrating balls of joy and I again knew nothing. The calls to my Mum became less self assured and more frantic.

“Why is she still crying?”

“What should I feed her?”

“How do I stop them fighting?”

“For the love of Mike, what is that smell?”

“Will I ever sleep again?”

and my personal favorite whispered one late night as I prepared for the birth of my second child, “Can I possibly have enough love left over for another child when this one has already filled my heart?”

The answer, if you are curious, was that you don’t have to share the love, it doubles.

Just like that my parents were back on top of the hill. Kings of Knowledge. Sultans of Swing. Hold on, that was from a song. But you get my drift...

Now we are travelling along a road of companionship. Equals in our lack of real knowledge, swimming against the current together. There is a wall coming up that I know will be hard to climb, the time when I will be responsible for their well being. When I will have to provide the answers to questions I do not want to hear.

The hard conversations about when to stop driving, where they want to live if their health declines, and end of life care including quality of life. I read a book recently that had an enlightening perspective on that. You should ask your parents what quality of life means to them. Is it the ability to finish a crossword or just to enjoy the taste of chocolate ice-cream? Is their life not worth holding on to if they can’t communicate with their family or when self mobility is lost?

Everyone has a different response and not one is wrong. Once you have the answers to those questions, the book comforts, the other decisions have less weight.

Whenever that time comes I will face it head on, even though as life comes full circle, I am again the one who knows nothing.

On Our Cover Goodyear Firefighter of the Year

The Arizona Elks Association named Goodyear Fire Department Fire Engineer Gilbert Aguirre Firefighter of the Year. The award was presented in front of the entire Elks Association at the annual state convention on Saturday, May 12th.

Gilbert is an 18-year veteran of the fire service.

He brought his skills and talents to the Goodyear Fire Department in August of 2007 where he has excelled ever since by promoting to Fire Engineer and becoming a state certified Paramedic.

Gilbert was nominated for the award because resilience and the ability to overcome adversity is a positive trait in a human being. In a firefighter, it is an absolute necessity. No one embodies this trait in the Goodyear Fire Department the way that Engineer Gilberto Aguirre does.

Just over two years ago, Gilbert was diagnosed with Leukemia and battled for his life. His tenacity and ability overcome challenges was tested to

the limit. Through the love and support of his family he has endured and emerged cancer free.

Gilbert is back on a fire truck doing what he loves to do, taking care of the citizens of Goodyear.

He has taken on a new fight; he has partnered with other firefighters around the state to lobby for legislative changes to the firefighter cancer laws which the International Association of Firefighters reports that cancer is now the leading cause of death among firefighters. Gilbert is also leading the way in department changes to reduce or eliminate exposure to toxic chemicals by developing new procedures, station design and awareness.

His efforts and results are a direct reflection of who he is.‌a champion. A champion for others, a champion for the Fire Service, for his brothers and sisters in the Goodyear Fire Department and for his family. Gilbert is setting the example of resilience and perseverance and he is a natural recipient of the Arizona Elks Association’s Firefighter of the Year.

Eat Smart

It’s a sadly familiar situation: You ate a nutritious breakfast, packed a salad and ate a healthy lunch. You’re eating better, cutting out the junk and everything is going well ... until late in the afternoon.

Around 3 p.m. is when the cravings always hit.

When your stomach tells you it wants carbs and sugar, and those snacks in the break room are irresistible. You start to convince yourself that one candy bar isn’t really going to hurt anything.

Almost everyone has experienced these hunger pangs. The trick is, knowing how to handle them.

These five tips will show you some of the best ways to manage and beat these cravings.

1. Are you hungry or thirsty? When hunger first hits, take a step back to ask yourself if you need food or just a few ounces of water. People often mistake thirst for hunger, and the solution here might be that you need to stay hydrated throughout the day. Keep a water bottle at your desk and refill it often.

2. Get the right kind of protein. Experts frequently recommend increasing your protein intake in order to stay full, but not just any protein will do; you need to be sure you’re getting the right kind of protein. For instance, casein protein found in cottage cheese allows your body to digest more slowly and keeps you full longer. With flavors

like strawberry, blueberry, pineapple, peach, mango, black cherry, raspberry, vanilla and plain, satisfying your hunger has never tasted better.

3. Add some spice to your life. Research has shown that spices such as red pepper can help curb hunger. Other spices such as turmeric, curry powder, ginger and chili powder may have a similar effect. So be generous with your spices.

You’ll have an additional kick to your meal and skip the late-afternoon hunger pangs.

4. The foods you crave won’t satisfy. It’s tempting to think a frosted scone or piece of toast is your ticket to a full stomach. In fact, foods made up of refined carbohydrates and a lot of sugar metabolize quickly, leaving you hungry and craving more food. Instead, reach for foods that are high in protein and low in carbohydrates.

Here again, Muuna cottage cheese can come to the rescue with up to 19 grams of protein and just 4 grams of carbs per serving.

5. It’s all in your mind. A lot of times our mind plays tricks on us. Those late-afternoon hunger cravings might not be the work of an empty stomach, but rather, a brain that’s been programmed to tell you to grab a sugary snack at a certain time. The feeling will pass and eventually you’ll break out of the habit.

Positive Parenting One of the best habits you can teach your son or daughter is the habit of goal setting. The best news; you can start this immediately by having your kids set goals for the summer. Keep it simple; let’s say no more than three goals. Maybe set one for health and wellness, another for personal growth and a third for something they are passionate about.

What are the benefits of goal setting?

• Builds self-confidence • Builds self-esteem • Focus energy in a positive direction • Builds a track record (memories) of successes • Tends to keep one focused on the future rather than the past • Less likely to get distracted by the drama and the garbage of life This is a great way to communicate with your child. Imagine if you set and shared your goals too. What a great way to deepen the relationship.

You may find yourself saying things like: • “Let’s turn that into a goal.”

• “That would make a great goal!”

• “Have you ever thought of making that a goal?”

• “What would your goal be?”

When should you start?

I started with my youngest child when he was in kindergarten. He had goals like campout with his 6 Estrella Publishing - The Hamlet magazine

father, build a fort, and go to Cedar Point. These were all things I, as a parent, could help him accomplish. My goal as a parent was to help my son develop a track record of success. I was able to check that goal off!

The Basics: 1. Must be in writing 2. Stated in a sentence 3. Must be their goal…not yours – so important!

4. Stated in a positive way. Rather than setting a goal of “not” sleeping after 9 a.m., the goal would be to be out of bed before 9 a.m.

5. Must be realistic – my middle son wanted to set a goal of getting 100% on every spelling test for the school year. Immediately my unrealistic goal buzzer went off. I was able to have him change his goal to get 100 % on three-quarter of his tests. Together we made a chart that tracked progress each week and placed it on his bulletin board. By mid-April he reached his goal.

It’s not about the goal; it’s about the key word – HABIT. Think of this as practice. When August rolls around they will be ready to set goals for the school year!

Here’s a tip to create buy-in: Go to the store with your child for the purpose of buying a “goal notebook.” Check in to see progress and when the goal is complete make a big deal about checking it off! Imagine if your son or daughter develops the “habit of goal setting.” Where could they take their life?

Fire Safety

Think of all the items you replace regularly - your cellphone, lightbulbs and even your toothbrush.

But when was the last time you replaced your smoke alarm batteries, or even the alarms themselves? It’s easy to overlook, but the time to think about fire safety is now - before an emergency strikes.

Many assume that because they have smoke alarms in their homes, they’re protected in the event of a fire. In reality, smoke alarms need to be installed, maintained and tested regularly to ensure they’re working properly. The fact remains that all smoke alarms - even hardwired and sealed battery models - expire after 10 years.

First Alert offers the following advice to ensure your family is best protected from fire.

Count the alarms - In most cases, one alarm isn’t enough. In fact, the U.S. Fire Administration, recommends smoke alarms be installed inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement, as well as one carbon monoxide alarm on each level and in each sleeping area.

Install them properly - Smoke alarms should generally be installed at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance to minimize false alarms. It’s also recommended to install smoke alarms high on walls or ceilings. Remember, smoke rises, so high placement provides a direct path for detection. Lastly, don’t install smoke alarms near windows, doors or ducts, where drafts might interfere with their operation.

Install and maintain - Having smoke alarms is only one part of the story. In order to function properly, all alarms must be regularly inspected and maintained. Make sure to test the alarm, by simply holding down the test button, at least once a month. Check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall.

Plan your escape - Maintaining alarms is essential to every household, but what about your escape route? To develop an effective plan, walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes. Identify two ways out of each room, including windows and doors. Practice your home fire escape plan at least twice a year and make sure to plan a meeting spot.

Thankfully, most Americans don’t experience large-scale natural catastrophes, but millions of homeowners do experience some kind of property loss each year and need to make an insurance claim. The most commonly reported homeowners insurance claims are actually the result of events that can occur at any time, so it’s important for homeowners to be prepared.

“Water claims are the ones we see most often,” says Christopher O’Rourke, Vice President of Property Claims at Mercury Insurance. “While certain perils are seasonal, water damage can occur any time of year. It’s important for homeowners to conduct routine maintenance of appliance hoses and water pipes to make sure there aren’t cracks or leaks and, if any are detected, have them repaired or replaced immediately.

“Another thing everyone can do to protect their homes from leaks is turn off their main water supply when they’re away for an extended period of time. No one wants to return from a relaxing

vacation to find water running through their home.”

While water claims are the most common, fire damage is another possible concern for homeowners and can be caused in several ways. O’Rourke suggests controlling the things you can and mitigating against the perils you can’t.

“Most home fires happen when people are inattentive or negligent. These fires are preventable if people don’t leave things like lit stoves, fireplaces, candles or portable heat sources unattended. You should also refrain from overloading electrical outlets and using appliances with frayed electrical cords,” he says.

“These things seem like common sense, but it’s amazing how many claims we see that result from simply not paying attention.

Theft doesn’t necessarily pose a threat to the physical structure of a home, but it too can be costly and it often leaves homeowners feeling scared and violated. Homeowners can help safeguard against theft by taking simple, but often overlooked precautions like ensuring doors and windows are locked, and not leaving spare keys in easy-to-find locations.

Out & About

The onset of warmer weather means taking to the outdoors, be it boating, camping or simply tackling big jobs in the backyard. The result is a heavy increase in traffic on the roads - and often tagging along with the extra vehicles are the trailers, boats and campers that can put motorists at risk. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 20,000 people require medical attention every year as a result of crashes involving trailers towed by passenger vehicles.These recreational outings don’t need to go sideways - nor does whatever you may be towing. Here’s a safety checklist to ensure you are towing the right way: Get hitched: A starting point to towing is knowing the pulling capacity of your vehicle, as too much weight can cause a load of problems, no matter how much power your engine has.

When it comes to connecting a trailer to the towing vehicle, a critical component, of course, is the coupler - the part of the hitch system that is attached to the trailer. The coupler needs to be secured, tight and locked.

is applying the safety chains, which need to be rigged to the tow vehicle. Avoid the common mistake of rigging the safety chains to the hitch or ball mount itself. Safety chains are federal law and will keep the trailer from drifting in the event the trailer coupling separates from the ball mount.

Light it up: No matter what you’re driving, communicating with other vehicles is paramount to safety - and that means having properly working brake, tail and turn signal lights. Before departing, sync up the trailer lights with the tow vehicle and test it out so that other motorists will know your actions.

Locked down and loaded: Once everything is hitched, it’s time to load up the cargo. It’s best to be balanced with weight distribution, but put heavier cargo in the front of the trailer. And of course, do not overload.

This pre-departure checklist is only a start. Once on the road, remember the basic safe driving practices when towing a trailer: Drive at moderate speeds, avoid sudden stops, don’t use cruise control and allow more distance for stopping.

No matter how much of a rush you are in to hit the road this summer, don’t take any shortcuts when it comes to towing safely.

On the towing vehicle, avoid using a ball mount and hitch that is rusted, cracked, corroded or poorly designed - anything that can compromise its integrity.

Bottom line: Always reference the “coupling to tow vehicle” section of your vehicle manual to make sure it is done right.

Feel the (tire) pressure: An often forgotten element on the trailer towing checklist is making sure the trailer’s tire pressure is at the right level.

In addition, inspect tires for wear or trauma - and be sure to have a spare.

Money Matters Father’s Day is almost upon us. If you’re a dad, you certainly may enjoy getting cards and gifts, of course. But, over time, you will gain even greater satisfaction by giving your children valuable financial lessons.

Setting goals – If you are contributing to an IRA and a 401(k), explain how you build these accounts now, so you’ll have enough money to enjoy a comfortable retirement someday. And you can bring your children into the picture by telling them that another financial goal is saving enough to help send them to college.

Value of understanding the financial markets – You may actually be quite surprised at how interested your kids are in investing, especially the concept of “owning” companies through stocks and stock-based vehicles. Depending on their ages, you might even want to show them the progress of your own investments and describe, in general terms, how different events can cause the markets to rise and fall.

And who knows? If they truly master the ideas you’ve taught them, one day they might give you some really nice Father’s Day gifts.

Putting time on your side – You might want to emphasize the importance of patience, and how investing is not a “get-rich-quick” scheme, but a process that requires decades of diligence and persistence. Let your children know that it’s of great value to start investing as early as possible.

Life as a Caregiver

Expectation and Acceptance

My mother is in a care facility for Alzheimer’s disease. Those words are still hard for me to say out loud sometimes. In fact, I can be out to lunch with friends, or walking my dog, and those words hit me like a bolt of lightning and the tears begin to fall.

She IS in a care facility. And it’s a nice one. It’s clean, spacious, nicely appointed and not far from my home. The staff is attentive, knowledgeable, and always trying to make her comfortable. She is indeed well cared-for in her new surroundings.

And I am grateful.

way….anymore. I always tell people the hardest part of caring for someone with Alzheimer’s is trying to get over the denial part. Say the words ‘Alzheimer’s disease’ out loud until it is absorbed into your being. And yet, the word “expectation” is often ignored.

My expectation of visits with my mom would be that I would walk into the room and she would give me that warm, loving and wonderful smile, and be almost gleeful that I had arrived. And when that wasn’t the case, I would be hugely disappointed and saddened. I couldn’t change her mood. I was powerless. I didn’t matter anymore.

Well—once I stopped making it about ME, expected less and accepted the reality of the disease and taking each moment one day at a time, things got better for me. I would sit and hold her hand, make sure she was comfortable, relish every smile…and leave knowing that this was the best it was going to be. That she was in good hands and not under my day-to-day care where I would be stressed and frustrated…and inept.

But all she seems to do is sleep when I’m there.

No more conversations about whatever, no more football, no more Wheel of Fortune. When I come to visit she sometimes knows it’s me–sometimes doesn’t. She generally keeps her eyes shut so the light can’t get in. And occasionally she will smile & call me honey when I talk to her….but not too often. She does enjoy the CDs I have brought for her….the likes of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, I still am her advocate, however, checking to and Celine Dion….three of her favorites. be sure the care she is receiving is gentle, thorough and done with affection. Which it is.

The first few visits left me terribly sad when I I had suspected she might be suffering from would leave. But then that word “expectation” depression…a common symptom of Alzheimer’s. crept into my head. I wanted her to be a certain So, the staff called her doctor, brought her in for way and expected that it would be so. But the a bit of testing and he prescribed a mild medicine reality was that it was NOT going to be that to help with that.

The take-away here is this: expectation in anything can be your worst enemy if we let it knock us down because it didn’t measure up to what we want or need. Acceptance can be our salvation…or our downfall, depending on how we interpret it. I’m going with taking a deep breath, doing what I can for her while I’m visiting, and knowing that the situation is what it is.

The Bug Guy Who invented the Fly swatter?

The first modern fly-destruction device was invented in 1900 by Robert R. Montgomery, an entrepreneur based in Decatur, Ill. Montgomery was issued Patent No. 640,790 for the FlyKiller, a “cheap device of unusual elasticity and durability” made of wire netting, “preferably oblong,” attached to a handle. The material of the handle remained unspecified, but the netting was crucial: it reduced wind drag, giving the swatter a “whiplike swing.” By 1901, Montgomery’s invention was advertised in Ladies’ Home Journal as a tool that “kills without crushing” and “soils nothing,” unlike, say, a rolled-up newspaper might.

Montgomery sold the patent rights in 1903 to an industrialist named John L. Bennett, who later invented the beer can. Bennett improved the design — stitching around the edge of the netting to keep it from fraying — but left the name.

Crumbine, secretary of the Kansas Board of Health. In 1905, he titled one of his fly bulletins, which warned of flyborne diseases, “Swat the Fly,” after a chant he heard at a ballgame.

Crumbine took an invention known as the Fly Bat — a screen attached to a yardstick — and renamed it the Fly Swatter, which became the generic term we use today.

Fly-killing technology has advanced to include fly zappers (electrified tennis rackets that roast flies on contact) and fly guns (spinning discs that mulch insects). But there will always be less techy solutions: flypaper (sticky tape that traps the bugs), Fly Bottles (glass containers lined with an attractive liquid substance) and the Venus’ flytrap (a plant that eats insects).

During a 2009 CNBC interview, President Obama killed a fly with his bare hands, triumphantly exclaiming, “I got the sucker!” PETA was less gleeful, calling it a public “execution” and sending the White House a device that traps flies so that they may be set free.
