From Me To You...

Welcome to the March edition of The Hamlet.

During a recent conversation with my Mum I found out that my childhood home is up for short term rent. For the next 6 months I could rent my memories. Let me tell you it was very tempting.

Due to the location of this house it would probably cost more to get there than it would to rent, and I really could not take advantage of it this year as my summer is ridiculously overbooked already. Plus it is unfurnished and England in the summer is not exactly comfortable to start with.

But still. It made me think, can you ever really go home?

I flipped through the online pictures and immediately a sense of outrage overtook me.

They had cut down nearly every tree that had surrounded my home. The cherry tree that I lay under reading Tess of the D’Urbervilles - gone.

The oak I learned to climb and hide in - gone.

The broad limbed beauty my siblings and I built a tree house in - gone.

What else had changed? Well it seemed they had removed one bathroom only to relocate it on the opposite side of the house. Why? Beats me.

In the kitchen there was an addition. A stove. Do

people not know how to use an Aga anymore?

Even if you don’t know, you can learn. One of my fondest memories was cooking pancakes on the griddle of that Aga. Sure it could be tricky cooking a cake in an oven that was powered with coal but where is your sense of adventure?

I noted that with an energy rating of ‘F’ they had not decided to improve the heating or insulation in the house. Now that I could have got behind.

Every room had a fireplace to provide heat, and for that reason I can now win the fire starting challenge if I ever make it onto Survivor. Also the eaves over my sister’s bedroom would collect snow every winter, only to release it in a beautiful waterfall in the spring. In front of her doorway.

Inside. I am guessing that may still be a problem.

Despite all these glitches it is still the home I grew up in and it holds a special place in my heart.

The indoor shutters are still there - 19th century insulation at it’s best. The amazing staircase that wraps around the outside of the entrance hall reminds me of decorating trees at Christmas. And sliding down the bannister, to my parent’s horror.

The long driveway where I learned how to use a stick shift and had the horrible job of shovelling when it snowed still winds past fields and around the front of the house.

Yes, the house has changed but my home is still there, peeking out behind the improvements that subsequent owners have made. Anyone want to go in on a temporary house share with me?

On Our Cover Foster Care. Two words that evoke all types of emotions. Foster care touches the lives of many people. Either they were in foster care, know someone who was in foster care, were a foster parent or work in an industry that interacts with kids placed in care.

In Maricopa County there are over 10,000 kids in foster care. Kids that have been removed from their homes and families. According to the US Administration of Children and Family Services of these 10,000 children 74% will go to prison, 50% of these children will go to prison before they turn 19 once they “age out” of foster care at 18 years old. 50% of the 10,000 girls in foster care will be pregnant by the age of 19. 80% of the prison population on death row are former foster kids.

self-esteem. Mentors truly change the lives of kids in foster care. Having a Mentor for one year 100% of the kids grades improved, their attendance improved, their behavior got better and their self-worth improved. 100%!

Arizonans for Children Mentors spend 8 hours a month with a school age child in foster care and commit to a year with that child. Most of the children are placed in a group home setting, a house that has staff and 6-15 other children of various ages and backgrounds. Often these kids are not exposed to daily life lessons that are vital to their success as they age out of care.

Things like when to say thank you, how to count change, what public transportation looks like, how to grocery shop and pay bills. Arizonans for Children Mentors help by introducing their mentee to these life skills and enjoy activities like going to the park or library.

If you are asking yourself what you can do to help this most vulnerable population there are many ways to make a difference in their lives. How can you have a lasting impact and help change those statistics? After all not everyone can be a foster parent. Arizonans for Children is a non-profit that provides services to improve the fragile lives of children in foster care. One of the most effective opportunities to give these kids a chance is to become a Mentor to a school age child in foster care. 89% of the kids that have had a mentor for 6 months or more experience improved grades in school, have fewer discipline problems and instances of running away from their group home and a significant boost in their The Hamlet

Eat Healthier If you’re indulging in too many break room snacks or swinging by the drive-thru after work, you’re not alone. With such a busy life, it’s easy to grab something quick and unhealthy on the go. But, the good news is, it’s also easy to make changes in your diet that will reap powerful health benefits in no time.

Start small. You don’t have to completely overhaul your diet in a day. Start with small things, like taking your lunch to work instead of eating out, cutting down on soda or getting a new cookbook of healthy recipes to inspire you.

Cook at home. When you eat out, even when opting for the “healthy” items on the menu, you could be getting hidden doses of salt, sugar and fat.

Explore your health insurance discounts. Many health plans offer resources, discounts and incentives for leading a healthier life. Participating Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) companies, for example, have the Blue365 program, which

features a variety of health and wellness products and services.

Eat the rainbow. Colorful foods are packed with nutrients. Red foods help heart health and improve memory. Orange foods are good for your eyes, yellow foods help with digestion and brain function, purple foods are powerful antioxidants and green foods are good for your eyes, musculature, bones and teeth.

Slash the sodium. Lowering your sodium intake can help lower your blood pressure and get rid of water weight.

Watch your sugar. Too much sugar leads to weight gain, abdominal obesity, low HDL and high LDL, elevated blood sugar and a whole host of other problems.

Meatless Mondays! Going vegetarian one day a week is a great way to get more veggies into your diet. Just don’t pack on the refined carbs like white bread, pasta or potatoes in place of the meat.

Practice mindful eating. Focus on what you’re eating, how you’re nourishing your body, and how much you enjoy the taste of the food.

School Threats Are NO Joke!

We live in a nation gripped with fear over the recent school shooting at Douglas High School in Florida. Unfortunately, as we look back over the past 18 years, what should be an impossible fear has somehow become a reality in this country.

Children are afraid to go to school and parents are even more afraid to see their children walk out the front door. As we approach the 19th anniversary of the first large scale mass killing at Columbine High School, we are seeing this type of tragedy happen more and more frequently.

Threats in general, but especially threats against our children, teachers and schools are always taken very seriously by the Goodyear Police Department. Our top priority is the safety of our

community, especially our children! Unfortunately, there are individuals out there, some of whom are teens or even younger children, who have a common motive, a desire to gain attention through empty threats and hoaxes. They seem to get a thrill out of scaring the community and getting a reaction out of authorities and media.

The Goodyear Police Department will not tolerate such behavior. All threats are thoroughly investigated and those individuals deemed responsible will be held accountable to the fullest extent allowed under the law.

The Goodyear Police Department enjoys a great partnership with our schools and district personnel. In addition to having 3 dedicated School Resource Officers in our three high schools and servicing the other schools in each of their districts, the police department also has a Police School Sub-Station Program, located at three schools around the city; Mabel Padgett, Centerra Mirage and Westar Elementary.

This unique and innovative program has proven to be very effective in not only deterring crime on campuses but also providing a quick response time when a problem does occur at a school, an officer is likely on campus, utilizing the substation.

Goodyear Police encourage parents and school administrators to discuss with their students the serious nature of threats against schools, real or not. A threat is never funny, even if it is intended to be a joke or hoax. We always encourage anyone who witnesses suspicious activity, especially as it relates to the safety of a school, to report it to authorities immediately, so it can be properly investigated.

Allergies

From flowers poking through the ground to ditching heavy winter parkas, it’s easy to look forward to spring. Unless, of course, you have allergies. Then, the path to warmer weather and additional daylight could be marked with watery eyes, sneezing and a runny nose. Makes it hard to be excited, right? It doesn’t have to.

While spring carries its own concerns for allergy sufferers everywhere, there is relief. Now is the perfect time to set plans in place to help ease your allergy symptoms before they begin.

“People think they’re doing everything they can to battle spring allergies,” says allergist Bradley Chipps, MD, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. “What they don’t realize is that by following a few simple rules they can make life a lot more pleasant, and their allergies more bearable.”

As you start your spring allergy planning, keep these tips from ACAAI in mind. Use them and your spring will be filled with flowers and breezes, not coughing and sneezes.

4. Clean your air effectively. If you have central air, change your filters every three months and use filters with a MERV rating of 11 or 12 to keep your air as clean as possible.

5. Resist the urge to breathe in fresh air. Opening windows allows pollen and other debris into your home where they can settle in your carpet or upholstery. As hard as it can be, you’re better off keeping your windows closed during peak allergy season.

By using the tips above, you can ensure that you have everything you need to make spring great.

Water Leaks

Home water leaks waste 1 trillion gallons of water per year, and 10 percent of American homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons of water a day, according to the EPA. Fixing easily detectable leaks like dripping faucets and malfunctioning toilets can reduce water bills and water waste.

But what do you do about the leaks you can’t see? Hidden leaks can be dangerous. Leaking pipes within walls can cause mold. Dripping faucets behind appliances can be a fire hazard.

Leaking irrigation can cause significant lawn damage. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

In a national study of more than 300 homes, intelligent-water industry leader Phyn found that 17 percent of homes have some type of leak.

Of those leaks, half were from a broken toilet flapper. This type of common leak wastes 800 to 1,100 gallons of water each day!

Uncovering hidden links is important for your budget, your safety and to protect your property investment. Here are some ways to easily detect hidden leaks so you don’t have to worry: Proactive inspections: Look where hidden leaks commonly occur before you see signs of a problem. Early detection could prevent costly damage. Even new homes need this approach, since human error during construction could lead to hidden leaks later.

Inspect systems: First check your irrigation system by walking around the yard, looking for signs of leaks, like puddles of water or depressions in the ground near sprinkler heads or lines. Also, inspect around your water heater for moisture. Remember to watch the water meter, too. An unexpected spike in a water bill could indicate a problem.

Technology: New advancements help detect leaks using intelligent-water technology. Installed right after the meter on the main water line, a device analyzes your home’s water use by measuring tiny changes in pressure at 240 times per second. This allows the device to shut off the water automatically, so the owners can rest assured that they won’t come home to surprise water damage from a burst pipe.

Keep age in mind: Older homes have older pipes and systems that may be more prone to leaks, so it’s important to keep close attention on your home as it ages. That being said, new homes aren’t immune to water leaks. You may have heard stories of new homeowners hanging a picture on their wall, only to find a puddle on the floor the next day right below where the nail had punctured a pipe. Pipes and soldering can fail at any time, whether your home is brand new or 100 years old.

College Costs The last year of high school is a whirl of activity, and it’s no different when it comes to the final leg of college selection. Once the acceptance notifications arrive, it will soon be time to sit down with a different stack of mail: financial aid letters.

Hopefully, those financial letters contain some good news.

For most families, analyzing the letters is a process of uncovering the college that can offer the best education at the best value for your student. One way to get there is to parse the details of the letter itself so you understand the net cost of your student’s education. Still, it’s critical to look at other factors and opportunities around higher education costs. Taking a deeper look at these can help you and your student reach the best possible decision.

Ongoing costs: The financial aid letter describes the student’s first year. As much as you can, do some forecasting for the next three to four years. It’s especially important to understand whether awards are renewable, or if they’re available only to first-year students.

Negotiation: If the college isn’t coming through with enough aid to make college affordable for your student and family, don’t give up. You might be able to negotiate more aid. Submit a letter and ask for a follow-up appointment. Be specific about what you are requesting, and be sure to explain if you have specific circumstances such as medical costs or a job loss that may have affected your ability to meet the expected family contribution.

If you find the amount of financial aid provided isn’t enough families may want to research and explore private student loans as an option to cover the additional expenses.

Deciphering free aid vs. other options: Take a close look at each line in the aid column.

Key words, such as scholarships, grants and fellowships, signal no-strings money for school.

Work-study and student loan packages are options that will need students to find a job or pay the money back.

Cost-of-living expenses: Think about those extra costs that come up over the weeks and months of any college year, such as meals, phone, transportation and laundry. Don’t forget entertainment. After all, they’re not going to spend all their time studying in their dorm room Local economy: One thing worth considering is the local economy of the first-choice school, especially if your student may want to pick up a part-time job along the way. Even better, look for local employers that are compatible with your child’s career goals. An entry-level job at one of these workplaces can help make ends meet, while making your student more marketable when it’s time to graduate.

Ask a Pharmacist There’s no denying that prescription drug coverage and medications can be complex territory. Enter UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement’s Chief Pharmacy Officer Mike Anderson, PharmD, who has spent his career navigating the ins and outs of the Rx world.

Below, Anderson answers some common questions people ask about drug coverage and prescriptions.

Q. How do I know if my prescriptions are covered by my Medicare plan?

A. Whether you get coverage through Medicare Advantage or a standalone Part D plan, each has a list of prescription drugs covered. You’ll want to look closely to make sure your medications are covered. Health insurers post listss online, or you can call your plan to request a printed version.

Keep in mind that plans can change from year to year, so don’t assume that prescription drugs covered this year will always carry over.

Q. How can I save money while remaining on my medications?

A. There are many ways to do that: Home-delivery pharmacy benefits can save money and a trip to the pharmacy. Some mail-order pharmacies offer the convenience of ordering a three-month supply of drugs delivered to your home for less than purchasing at a retail location.

Switching to generic drugs or drugs on a lower tier of the formulary is another step that could save money. If you are taking brand-name medications now, discuss generic alternatives with your doctor.

Q. Can I split my pills in half?

A. Talk to your doctor about whether pill-splitting for your medication is medically advised. Also, consult your pharmacist on whether the actual pill form presents risks. Some pills are dangerous when split, because splitting affects how quickly the drug is released into your body. Other pills become ineffective when split, because the pill contains a coating to protect it from stomach acid, and splitting the pill breaks that coating.

Literacy at Home What was your favorite childhood book?

Chances are, you can come up with a title right away. That’s because books create powerful memories of stories and characters that inspire kids’ imaginations and will be treasured for a lifetime. Unfortunately, some children grow up with limited access to books, meaning they’re unable to create those memories so many people take for granted. A lack of books in the home is also linked to lower reading scores and less success in school, according to research by the Family and Community Engagement Research Compendium.

Here’s the good news: this problem does have a solution. Having books in the home has been proven to improve children’s reading performance, cause them to read more frequently and for longer lengths of time, and improve overall attitudes toward learning. It’s clear that promoting literacy in your home and in your community are worthwhile investments of your time and money. Wondering where to start?

Build reading into the routine: When the kids are small, it’s easy for many parents to create the nightly ritual of story time. Don’t stop just because they’ve started school and are reading on their own. Commit to sitting down every night to read together. When the kids see you reading books too, you set a great example.

Ask questions: Asking children questions while you read together helps them develop critical thinking skills. For example, you might ask, “How is the family in this book like our family?” or “The girl in this book likes to swim. What do you like to do?”

Give books as gifts: The next time you celebrate a holiday or child’s birthday, consider giving the gift of a book - especially a title or two that you loved growing up.

Share, share, share: Every year or so, go through your book collection with the kids and decide which titles should be given a new home. They can be donated to schools and public libraries, or given to other groups that make books available for free or little cost to young readers. Even better, when you buy a book, purchase a second copy to donate or give away.

Life as a Caregiver I knew the day would come when I could no longer care for my mom in the manner it took to keep her comfortable. I knew it because I had read about it over and over. I knew it because the support group I attend spoke about it. I knew it because that is the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. I knew it because all the people I know whose loved ones are victims of the disease have experienced it. Here is a perfect example of logic and intellect colliding with emotion. I knew the day would come….but when it did, I just couldn’t believe it.

I delivered mom to her new care facility: I brought what little stuff she had from my casita, helped arrange her new room the way she liked, gave her a big hug & told her I loved her with all my heart…and left. I wasn’t allowed to return for two weeks. It honestly felt like someone had socked me in the stomach, but I also felt an enormous amount of relief.

The kind people at her new home said their job was to take care of her…and MY job was to enjoy her. That sounded like a good plan. I could deal with that. So when the day finally came when I could visit her, I was so excited and anxious to see her.

I came through the beautiful living room and found her sitting in the family room. Her face lit up when she saw me. It was wonderful. There

wasn’t too much to talk about since she doesn’t remember much of what happens during her day, but we laughed and hugged….that was all we really needed. I left after about an hour…and would return in two days.

That day wasn’t as positive. She was still in bed when I arrived in the afternoon because she was suffering from one of her horrible chronic headaches. But when I work her up, she was happy to see me. I could see the pain on her face, but she smiled and decided to have some lunch. So, they brought it to her and we sat together while she ate. Then she said she needed to lie down, so I kissed her and said goodbye.

Putting our precious cargo in the caring hands of others is exactly the right thing to do as Alzheimer’s patients decline. These professional caregivers are emotionally removed from the horrible reality of the disease and can care for our loved ones efficiently and without hesitation.

The constant reminder of how mom is declining surrounds me mentally but not visually like it did when she lived here.

That is the healthy ‘break’ that people speak about when warning family members who are caregivers…the ‘break’ from the visual picture we get of our loved ones in discomfort and decline 24/7…the frustration and sadness that we feel all of the time while trying to enjoy them.

I continue to work on getting over the guilt and the powerless feeling of not being able to control the situation. I am slowly getting my life back, but it is a new life. Life with my mom in a care facility.

The reality of this is that I will have to go through this loss again when she passes away. Hopefully, I will be stronger and better prepared. Hopefully.

Money Matters It’s that time of year again when you may find a little bit of extra money in your pocket, thanks to your annual tax refund. There are plenty of practical ways to spend it, such as putting it toward paying off credit cards, loan payments or even starting a college fund, but there is always something tempting about taking that money and putting it toward something just a little bit more fun. Instead, consider something that is both practical and fun that you will use every day and will help you save money throughout the year.

1. Learn something new: Maybe you have been meaning to learn a new skill or explore a subject that you have taken interest in. Your refund is the perfect solution to fund a new hobby.Look into your local community college, dance studio, art center, etc. and check out the various classes offered to find one that piques your curiosity.

If you are lucky, these courses could turn into something far more fruitful that will last far beyond tax season.

2. Be on the cutting edge: Haven’t you always wanted to be the first among your friends with one of the latest smartphones? Often though, it

becomes too expensive between the phone, the update charge and the data fees. This year, use your tax refund to purchase one of the latest smartphones and a new wireless plan that allows you to save in the long-term.

3. Plan a staycation: Planning a vacation can be tough with a hectic family schedule. Between working out the details and packing, the planning process can become overwhelming. Why make it complicated when you can instead vacation from the comfort of your own home? Use your refund to have family-based experiences in your hometown - many museums, zoos, waterparks, etc. offer discounted year-round family memberships, too.

4. Get fit: Your tax return is your second chance at getting into better shape this year. If the gym isn’t for you, put it toward trying a new exercise class, or better yet, do it with a friend or partner!

Many workout studios give discounted classes for your first session, so you’ll have the opportunity to “try before you buy”.

You work hard all year and deserve to reward yourself with something fun and practical that can bring a little more balance to your emotional and financial health.

Vaccines

Childhood and adolescent vaccination is considered by many to be one of the greatest public health accomplishments of the 20th century, but based on the results of a new study by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA), there is still more work to do to ensure children and teens are protected against the diseases vaccines were developed to eradicate.

The Blue Cross Blue Shield: Health of America Report shows childhood vaccination rates climbed 12 percent among young commercially insured members. Data shows 69 percent of young BCBS members born in 2010 were up-todate on their CDC-recommended vaccinations by the age of 2 years and 3 months compared to 77 percent of children born in 2013. The study also found that the rate of documented vaccine refusal went up by nearly 70 percent for children born in 2013 compared to those born in 2010.

The result of vaccine refusal can be dangerous, not only for the child who is vulnerable to diseases like measles and diphtheria, but for the community at large.

It played itself out in Minnesota last year, when a measles outbreak in the Twin Cities exceeded the total number of cases reported in the entire U.S. the year before. Health officials didn’t have to look far for the cause. Spread of the highly infectious disease started in the state’s SomaliAmerican community.

According to the Minnesota Department of Health, the vaccination rate among SomaliAmerican children dropped from the high 80s to a low of 42 percent last year in response to the anti-vaccine movement’s targeting efforts, fueling the outbreak. But the disease wasn’t confined to the Somali community. It spread throughout the Minnesota public school system as well, infecting non-vaccinated children.

The disease is nothing to take lightly. At the low end, it causes fever, runny nose, cough, sore throat and a rash, but it can be deadly, spawning pneumonia, blindness and even encephalitis.

One especially alarming complication lurks in the brain for years after a person has recovered and mysteriously reawakens, causing seizures, coma and death. No one who has contracted that complication has survived.

Low uptake of HPV vaccine It’s not just childhood vaccines that parents are refusing. According to the BCBSA report, only 29 percent of adolescents received a first dose of the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine before their 13th birthday. And that’s a problem.

According to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 31,500 people die every year from cancers caused by HPV. It’s a heartbreaking statistic, especially because the American Cancer Institute estimates that, if all teens were vaccinated against HPV, cervical cancer would be eliminated within one generation.
