From Me To You...

Welcome

to the January edition of The Hamlet.

Happy New Year! You had to know it was coming, an editorial about resolutions. It is the time of year after all.

My resolutions are probably much the same as many of yours. In the past I have resolved to eat less and move more. That one is not fun, but it works... over the last year I have lost over 20lbs following that mindset. I fell off the proverbial wagon many times and I did not enjoy most of it, but there is a great satisfaction once the pounds finally start to disappear. I really thought I was doing well in my goal until I renewed my driver’s license recently and discovered that I am still 20lbs heavier than I was when we moved here 13 years ago. Rats.

Another resolution I tried in the past was to eat less chocolate. That was a non starter. I really don’t even know why I suggested it in the first place.

A big one for me was to stop procrastinating. I am living in the Land of Last Minute Tasks and I am their queen. Putting things off until I have no choice but to finish them is my raison d’etre - or reason to be if you prefer English. There are always so many other things I would rather do than whatever it is that I have to do. Part of my problem is the lack of focus that has seemed to follow... Squirrel!!!

Where was I? Ah yes procrastination... I think the only thing I do on time is meet my deadline, producing these magazines every month. I am actually quite proud of my record for hitting my print deadlines for the last almost decade. I do have to admit that if there was not a team of people at the printer waiting for me, that would probably not be achievable. However I do hate to disappoint others. So thank you Gene for keeping me accountable.

On to this year.

I get to meet many people through this job and I love talking to them and hearing their stories. Some of the people are young and some not so young. From the last group the thing I hear most often is that they wish they had taken better care of their teeth. Sure there is a smattering of regret over the one that got away and the life choices made in error. But mostly it is the teeth.

I am guilty of not going to the dentist on a regular basis. I have had so many fillings and crowns that the last time I complained to my dentist about pain in a tooth he actually said, “That is not your tooth it is a crown, so I don’t think it can be hurting.” Ah. As a parent I am vigilant about the 6 month check ups and cleanings for my kids. I march my children in there telling them it is not an option and that they will thank me one day.

Meanwhile the nagging guilt that I am not following my own advice is thrumming away in the back of my mind. “I am so busy” I tell myself, or “I will make an appointment next time I take the kids.” I have an excuse for every point. But those people I spoke to are right. If I lose my teeth I cant eat chocolate. Hold on, I have a great point there. Excuse me I have to make a phone call...

Positive Parenting If you’re a parent with a smartphone or tablet, it didn’t take long before your little one first reached for your shiny device. To your surprise - and theirs - learning how to swipe and tap objects to make them move on the screen came quickly and naturally. Oftentimes the challenge soon becomes how to keep their hands off the device. It’s perfectly acceptable, even beneficial, for young children to have these interactions with technology ... but only with appropriate parental guidance.

Young children can strengthen their interactions with other family members, as well as improve their familiarity with sounds, words, language and the world around them, through the responsible use of technology. Most experts agree, however, that children under the age of 2 probably shouldn’t trade their rattles in for tablets. There are enough real-world interactions to keep them busy, and whether they play with blocks or pull the cat’s tail, these tangible experiences are important to their development.

Once beyond the 24-month mark, you can begin introducing technology to your little tyke. Chances are he or she may already enjoy the privilege at preschool; many toddler day-care centers and preschools now incorporate technology, from computers to tablets, into their curriculum.

Whether at school or at home, most youngsters interact with screens before they turn 5. According to a survey conducted by the Joan Ganz Cooney Center, more than eight in 10 children from age 2 to 10 use digital media every week. In fact, two-thirds have tablets or e-readers. While the interactions are practically inevitable, significant parental and caregiver involvement can help steer them in the right direction, ensuring kids are exposed to content providing the best opportunities for learning.

Between laptop computers, desktop PCs, tablets, televisions and smartphones, there’s probably a screen in nearly every room of your home. Although these screens can and often do serve as virtual babysitters, games, apps and other content should be carefully selected, and screen time should be limited to an hour or less a day for toddlers.

By using technology with your children, you’ll introduce them to the most beneficial content, while also bonding with them over an exciting, shared experience. Something as simple and fun as taking turns in a game or reading together on a tablet can also help ensure technology is being consumed in a responsible way that can educate and aid development.

While education is key, it doesn’t always have to be about learning your ABCs and 123s.

Plenty of games and apps combine learning and entertainment experiences that are fun for kids. Checking the ESRB age and content rating information in console and online stores is a great way to find appropriate games for kids of all ages.

ESRB ratings are also assigned to mobile games and apps in the Google Play Store, complete with content descriptors and interactive elements when applicable.

As your little ones mature from toddlers to tweens, their use of technology as well as the technology itself will certainly evolve. The breadth of content they enjoy will greatly expand, highlighting the importance of parental involvement in managing and monitoring their time with tech. Regardless of where our smartphones and tablets take us, parental involvement and engagement is key to ensuring kids enjoy a healthy, responsible relationship with technology.

Happy New Year! Let’s get started on the traditional New Year’s Resolutions! Who’s with me?

I think I heard some groans, gleeful cheers, and an equal amount of silence. Half of Americans make a New Year’s Resolution with only eight percent achieving it. Maybe it’s a tradition that needs to end or change.

How about daylight savings time? It’s been a tradition since Germany was the first to use it. No, it wasn’t Ben Franklin, and an argument could be made Canada used it first. Arizona doesn’t change clocks, but we feel the effects. Of course, the tradition became a law, it might be time (no pun) to change it. We don’t save a whole lotta candles with the shifting of clocks twice a year.

Sometimes holiday traditions change. When I was much younger, Christmas Eve was spent with my family at my grandfather’s house with about eighty aunts, uncles, cousins. A fuse would always blow due to the four giant coffee percolators. It was tradition! Decades later and thousands of miles away, my Christmas tradition is to call family followed by a video game marathon with friends.

Oh, I added two new traditions after getting a rescue kitten last summer called “Spoil the Cat” and “Fix the Christmas tree.”

Changing a tradition might result in confusion, animosity, or outright hostility. Put a new roll of toilet paper on the wrong direction and there could be pandemonium! Recently, Google created online chaos when they released their cheeseburger emoji.

Google put the cheese under the burger instead of on top. Thousands of people took to their keyboards to protest or heckle. Apparently, we shouldn’t mess with the traditional cheeseburger in any form.

Do you have ketchup with your french fries? Do you dip your fries into the ketchup or squirt ketchup all over the fries? Ask any group of hot dog eaters the best toppings. Anyone who says “ketchup” will be required to defend their belief. I say, break tradition and use Russian dressing on hot dogs and fries!

The start of the year marks a point in time where we can reset or focus in a new direction. Whether you’re resolving to accomplish something, making a change, or starting a new tradition, I wish you a most wonderful New Year!

Black hole, begone: 5 tips for curating your treasured photos Are you one of those dedicated people who snap great photos at every meaningful moment of your life? And do most of those shots end up in virtual memory, filed away in a sea of unsorted images?

If so, you’re far from alone. Analysts say a whopping 1.2 trillion photos will be taken across the world this year, with many adding to the 4.7 trillion photo stockpile accumulating in digital storage.

In a way we’re victims of our own success when it comes to enjoying the key images that define our lives. While smartphone technology has made capturing and preserving our best memories easier than ever, we end up taking so many images we can’t curate them all; after that they often wind up forgotten or just plain lost somewhere in the digital realm.

There’s light at the end of the lens, however.

The photography industry has offered up several solutions for helping you sort and curate the photos that remind you of your most treasured memories.

Consider how the following ideas may help.

1. For easier organization and retrieval, there is software available to help you categorize, store and search for your most valuable shots, using technology such as face recognition and your camera’s GPS to make the process more efficient.

Mac users can source the free Photos app while Windows users can invest in helpful tools such as Adobe Photoshop Elements.

2. Immediately print those meaningful photos, especially if they’d make great gifts. After an exceptional photo session, take your smartphone or memory card directly to a Kodak Picture Kiosk (found at most CVS and Target locations) that can create the prints in minutes. You can even order ahead through the Kodak Moments App or place an order through kodakmoments.com to have it homedelivered.

3. Before downloading your photos for storage, get in the habit of quickly reviewing them and sorting definite keepers from duds. Delete the bad ones or simply rank them via your camera’s rating system so your photo library software categorizes them accordingly. Be sure to clearly name and date your folders and subfolders using multiple descriptive keywords pointing to themes, subjects, locations, occasions, seasons, etc.

4. Check out other time-saving tools. For example, the easy-to-use Kodak Moments App offers a “Made for You” feature that automatically searches your rolls to identify standout photos and show you how they’d look as prints, cards, photo books, canvases, mugs or magnets. Such personalized items can make meaningful gifts for the loved one who has everything.

5. For added security, some experts advise maintaining files for your digital photos on at least three different media, with one set stored outside of your home. That ensures you’ll always have options for retrieval if something goes awry.

When they’re brought out of storage and enjoyed, your most stellar photos can remind you of the best parts of your life. Make sure you’re curating and celebrating your most treasured memories.

Everyone has those days. You’re operating in a fog, or perhaps you spaced out on a family member’s name in the middle of dinner, or maybe you just find it hard to concentrate on work or hobbies. When these unwanted situations begin to come up more often, you may start to worry. Aging has long been associated with a slow mental decline.

The good news is there are simple things you can do to clear the cobwebs and regain your focus. Dr. Mike Dow, a psychotherapist and best-selling author, says we often don’t realize the brain is just like the heart, our muscles, our lungs and bones - it needs maintenance, and healthy habits to help keep it working at its very best.

To help you reach your optimal brain health, Dow offers these everyday tips.

Give yourself a daily challenge If you catch yourself in a rut or locked in your routine, it may be time to find ways to stretch your mind muscles with a new and challenging activity.

Researchers have discovered that healthy brains need certain levels of reserves, and challenging them is one way to build those reserves.

“Think of your brain like a bank account,” Dow says.

“Relationships tend to buffer us from the stress of daily life, which is good because over time, excess stress can cause inflammation,” Dow says. “At the same time, good, healthy relationships give our lives meaning.”

To meet new people, try simple things like inviting a neighbor over for dessert, joining a book club or volunteering for a nonprofit or cause that’s important to you.

Get enough sleep We often short ourselves on sleep when life gets busy, but it’s important to make it a priority, Dow says.

“Think of nighttime sleep as a wash-and-rinse cycle that clears away the ‘bad stuff’ that builds up during the day,” Dow says. “Brain fog and dementia-causing plaques are washed away by cerebrospinal fluid, and this process is more effective when you’re sleeping.”

Dow recommends practicing healthy sleep habits, such as striving for eight hours each night, being consistent with your bedtime routine and using melatonin instead of prescription and over-thecounter sleep aids to help you drift off.

3) Strategically place throw rugs around the house. Carpet and rugs are a magnet for pet hair-so use them to your advantage! Place throw rugs in areas your cat or dog frequents and they can collect the lion’s share of the shedding before the hair infiltrates every nook and cranny in the rest of your home. Then you can easily vacuum those rugs!

From their loyal ways to their silly antics, pets bring so much joy to homes. While you wouldn’t trade any of the cuddles and welcome-home slobbers, one thing most pet owners don’t find quite as lovable is all the pet hair!

When you live with a furry friend, it’s inevitable that there will be pet hair everywhere-hiding under tables, collecting in corners and clinging to clothes and furniture. Cleaning up after it all can be hard work-but the good news is that there are some ways to keep it under control. With a few simple steps, you can keep your home clean and free from pet hair (at least until that next shake).

1) Embrace your inner groomer. The best way to deal with pet hair in your home is to stop it even before it starts. Regularly grooming your pet will help control pet hair and shedding. Get into the habit of brushing your pet each day. Chances are, they’ll enjoy the extra attention, and you’ll be able to collect and dispose of their hair before it gets everywhere else. If your pet needs extra care, take them to a groomer every couple of months to really control the undercoat or longer hair.

2) Use a vacuum designed to pick up pet hair. After you’ve used a conventional vacuum that fails to pick up your dog or cat’s hair a couple of times, it’s probably safe to say that you’ve had enough. Get your hands on a vacuum built for the job which is engineered specifically for homes with pets. 4) Give your pet a designated hang-out spot. 5) Washable slipcover. There’s no reason to cut out couch cuddles with your fluffy friend. A washable slipcover for your furniture can work wonders to protect furniture from hair and messes. And, it doesn’t have to be the unsightly plastic covers people used to have -contemporary slipcovers are made of soft cloth, are easy to remove and look great. Most you can even throw in your washing machine to easily to remove the hair. In between washings, using vacuum attachments will help keep your couch hair free.

After trying out these tricks, the only evidence that there’s a pet in your home will be from the lovable, furry greeting they give you when you walk in the door!

First Person Throughout her career, Lindsay Norris had a close connection with cancer, helping others battle the disease. Then one day, it became even more personal.

The 33-year-old oncology nurse still remembers the moment she heard the news of her own diagnosis - Stage 3 colorectal cancer. “I’ve been in those conversations so many times,” she said. “I’ve shared a plan of care so many times. I’ve explained this stuff so many times.” Lindsay knew the cancer journey but now she was the one on the receiving end of the conversation.

While the magnitude of a cancer diagnosis cannot be denied, a Pfizer-sponsored survey of cancer patients and caregivers shows nearly 85 percent of the patients surveyed have a positive outlook on cancer. In fact, nearly 90 percent of patients believe cancer has forced them to prioritize important things in their life and 3 in 5 patients surveyed said cancer allowed them to discover the “real me.”

That said, day-to-day life with cancer is challenging and the same survey shows a majority of those patients and caregivers surveyed say it would be helpful to have an all-in-one mobile tool or app while managing life with cancer, stating some of the most helpful resources would be the ability to keep track of questions that come up during the day and during medical appointments, keeping track of medications and being able to communicate with loved ones. Pfizer recently launched LivingWith, a free mobile app to help patients and their loved ones manage life with cancer and organize important information in one place.

While Lindsay has adjusted some things in her life since her diagnosis, her commitment to her work as a nurse has remained steadfast and each day she comes to the hospital as both patient and professional. “I figured I have to come every day

for treatment anyway, so I might as well work,” she said of juggling care for her patients with her own treatment schedule. “I’ve always taken pride in my job and taking care of my patients. I have always tried to put others before myself.”

Of course, like most people with cancer, Lindsay, a mother of two young children, has her good days and her bad days. On her good days she can go without taking a nap and is able to make dinner for the family and enjoy bath time. But on her bad days, she simply can’t enjoy these activities and that’s when her husband steps in to help.

The missed opportunities sadden her, but she understands these struggles are part of living with cancer and refuses to let them define her. She still remembers breaking the news of her diagnosis to her family and her 3 year old son Harrison referring to the disease as mom’s “cancer owie.” He said to me, “Mom, after your cancer owies are all gone and you’re done taking your special medicine, you can have a sleepover in my boys only fort.” Lindsay keeps this goal in mind, and while her battle with cancer is far from over, she’ll have her sleepover in that fort.

Drivers’ re-education on flat-tire fixing For many Americans, fixing a flat remains a mystery. According to a survey from AAA, nearly 20 percent of U.S. drivers don’t know how to change a flat tire. This is compounded by research saying there are 220 million flat tires annually - and each driver will experience up to five flat tires in their lifetime.

Before hitting the road, study up on these flattire-fixing hacks and build up the confidence to complete this all-American road test: Be spared: Knowing how to change a flat is all for naught if a spare tire is not along for the ride.

Spares are usually hidden under the carpet in the trunk area, but they aren’t always included in newer vehicles (allowing manufacturers to make lighter, more fuel-efficient vehicles). When purchasing a new vehicle, ask the dealer about the inclusion of a spare.

Flatlining signs: It’s fairly easy to spot a flat tire it’s usually accompanied by a loud noise or rubber flapping. The vehicle will feel like it is being pulled toward the side of the flat tire, and it will feel as if the vehicle can no longer accelerate. When in doubt, activate hazard lights and move the vehicle safely out of traffic, ideally on a flat area with enough space on the side of the road. Once in a safe spot, remember to practice high visibility: Wear a reflective vest and position reflective emergency

Hit the road, Jack: Having the right tools on board is critical, of course, and that’s where a jack comes in. A Strongway Jack from Northern Tool + Equipment is a compact, strong and reliable partner in replacing the bum tire and raising up the vehicle.

Remember, the jack is only used to get the vehicle off the ground, not to hold the vehicle in place that’s where the jack stands come in to ensure a safe and sustained lift. Refer to the owner’s manual for the proper placement of the jack and the stands, which is typically the sturdiest part of the vehicle.

Rider’s block: A common, and dangerous, error when changing a tire is not using blocks to prevent the wheels from rolling once the vehicle is raised.

A tire-changing tool pack should include bricks or wooden wedges to be placed behind the wheels at the end of the vehicle that isn’t being raised.

Get loose: Once the jack has been cranked up, and the wheel is slightly off the ground, it’s time to remove the hubcap and then call for another key tool, a tire iron, to loosen the lug nuts and then pull off the flat tire. Be careful not to strip the lug nuts.

On the road again: With the flat tire off, line up the spare tire’s holes with the wheel bolts and push on, hand-screwing the lug nuts back on. Then, lower the jack a touch so the wheel is in slight contact with the ground. Use the tire iron to further secure the lug nuts in a “star-like” pattern: After tightening the first lug nut, tighten the one that is diagonally across from it and continue in that pattern. This will prevent the wheel from wobbling.

In an age of mobile phones and easy connection to roadside assistance, the knowledge of addressing a flat tire has gone out the window or the sunroof. But, motorists should know - and practice the basics of changing a flat to ensure they are prepared for the dreaded pop.

According to a 2013 poll by NPR and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, only half of children in the U.S. are in families that dine together. Yet research cited by the American Academy of Pediatrics shows that children reap many benefits from regular family meals, from improved academic performance to developing a deeper sense of resilience.

But busy families can find time to sit down together more often, says Colleen Burns, a lifestyle expert.

To be successful, set the intention with good planning and smart strategies. What’s more, these meals can also be delicious and nutritious.

“When you have simple solutions in your toolbox to get those well-balanced and tasty meals on the table in the little time that you have, it lets you establish and keep an important family ritual,” says Burns, who is also a busy mom of six boys. “At the same time, you don’t get burned out, and that’s key to staying motivated and inspired.”

To help you get started, Burns shares her top three simple tips to get delicious and nutritious meals on the table quickly.

Shop the freezer section: When you’re in a time pinch, frozen foods have many offerings that set a good foundation for any home-cooked meal, Burns says. Oftentimes, the quality is just as good as their fresh counterparts, and they eliminate many steps

of prep time. On top of all that, fruits and veggies are flash-frozen, which locks the nutrients in place.

Don’t sacrifice: If you know what to look for when shopping the grocery aisles, you can find convenient entrees and sides without sacrificing taste or quality.

Maintain balance: Look to a variety of entrees and sides to bring a nutritional balance as well as delicious flavors to your dinner menu. Marinated Garlic and Lemon Roasted Chicken Drumsticks with Honey Mustard Sauce 10 chicken drumsticks 1 large lemon zested and juiced 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 3 whole cloves garlic, chopped 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon oregano 1 pinch each salt and pepper Minced parsley for garnish Honey Mustard Sauce: 3 tablespoons melted butter 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup mustard 1 tablespoon lemon juice Directions • In a bowl, mix together lemon juice, zest, olive oil, chopped garlic, paprika, oregano, salt and pepper.

• Add chicken drumsticks and toss to coat evenly.

Cover bowl with plastic wrap and place in refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

• When ready to cook, let chicken come to room temperature for about 20 minutes.

• Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

• Arrange chicken on oiled foil-lined sheet pan.

• Bake uncovered for 20 minutes. Flip chicken pieces and cook another 10 minutes until chicken reaches 165 degrees and is no longer pink.

• Make sauce in a small bowl by whisking together the mustard and honey.

• Add water as needed for a workable consistency.

• With a small pastry brush, brush auce over chicken and broil 5 minutes until bubbly.

• Place chicken pieces on a serving platter and sprinkle minced parsley over all.

It’s the busiest time of the year for home sales, and with this year’s stable economy and low unemployment rate, the spring of 2018 has the potential to be especially active.

Every market is defined by its trends, and while each year is different, identifying these trends early on can be a useful tool for buyers, sellers and agents to navigate the upcoming market and secure the best long-term solution for themselves or their clients.

Generations on the move The shift in home buying preferences is more than just an individual choice; it’s a generational one. Living With Faith It was approximately twenty-five hundred years ago that a Prophet of Israel roamed the countryside preaching about the goodness of humanity and how it could be found in each of us. In fact he emphasized that the most enduring force known to man was the power of our ability to conquer the wrong doing we witness every day.

There are many ways we can accomplish what was suggested so long ago. For example: Supporting institutions that give others the ability to survive and even carry themselves with dignity. Every day we witness the poverty and misery of those less fortunate. And there are those among us who were more independent but somehow woke one day to the progress of time.

It is not enough to acknowledge the problems. We are obligated, as partners with God, to ensure that the tear in our society is repaired to the best of our ability. Each tear in the fabric of our existence should bring us closer to understanding our place in the journey we are embarked upon. Age should not be a deterrent to reaching out to lend a helping hand. Rather it should encourage us to do more because we have been there and have seen the results of indifference. We are nothing without purpose and only when we lift a person who has fallen, can we with pride, declare who we are and truly comprehend the connection of Heaven and Earth.

That is the beauty of trying and our responsibility as God’s children.

God does not expect us to succeed in everything we undertake, but is disappointed when we do not attempt to improve our lives. The special ingredient in any attempt at connection with God and receiving the salvation we all so desperately need is a thing called forgiveness. Forgiveness gives us the ability to heal from wounds that have been inflicted. More importantly, forgiveness is a sign of positive selfesteem.

All these things are why a special time is set aside and designated for new beginnings.

We forgive, but never forget. For it is through forgiving that we remain a blessing and it is remembering that should help us refrain from repeating our mistakes.

May all of our New Year’s be fulfilling, and rewarding.

Senior Guests

Whether it’s for a special occasion or just because, hosting an older adult in your home can be a wonderful experience with lots of memory-making potential. However, for a safe and successful visit, you may want to make a few adjustments to your home before they arrive to make it more seniorfriendly.

“Spending time with aging parents or grandparents is a wonderful experience for all generations,” says Sara Terry, Brookdale Senior Living’s senior vice president of resident and family engagement.

“Creating a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere is the job of any good host and that is no different when entertaining seniors. Considering older adults’ varying mobility and comfort levels, there are a few adjustments you can make to your home to meet their needs.”

Whether your guest is staying short- or long-term, Terry offers these six tips to help you transform your home into a more senior-friendly environment so you can focus on what matters most: making memories with your entire family.

Clutter The easiest thing you can do is remove clutter to allow sufficient space for senior guests who may be in a wheelchair to maneuver around rooms.

Remove or tape down all cords. Rugs may look nice but they are a leading tripping hazard. Remove all accent rugs from your home, and in areas like the entryway where you must have mats, make sure they are secured with non-slip material.

Light Seniors need more light than you do in your home, particularly in notoriously dim areas such as entryways, hallways and staircases. Replace existing soft light bulbs with brighter or higher wattage ones and add motion-sensor lights to bathrooms. Adding night lights throughout your home is an easy addition that helps seniors see better, especially at night or on darker winter days.

Stairs Ideally, a senior won’t have to navigate stairs, but if you have some in your home, you can make the space safer by having railings on both sides.

Railings should be at least 1.5 inches in diameter to accommodate seniors with limited dexterity and aging grips. What’s more, help each stair be more visible by using contrast strips.

Bathrooms Make bathrooms safer by adding well-placed grab bars next to the toilet and in bathing spaces. In the shower or tub, add non-slip strips and a shower seat for comfort and ease of use. Finally, set the hot water heater temperature to 120 degrees as to avoid unintended burns.

Room selection Whether your loved one is staying one night, one month or more, selecting the right room will increase their comfort and safety. One-level living is key, so if possible use a room on the main floor with easy access to the bathroom, kitchen and living room. Furniture, including the bed and chairs, should be at a good height (neither too low nor too high) to be easily used. Knobs can be difficult, so consider replacing round door handles with lever handles.

“In addition to these tips, I recommend having a conversation with your loved one before their stay,” says Terry. “Talk to them about what will make them feel at home in your home. What’s most important is enjoying your visit to the fullest and spending valuable time together.”

Life As A Caregiver Imagine if you yourself had a disease or condition that was terminal for which there was no cure.

And, you were of the age that hindered you from understanding or remembering what it was that was wrong with you. That is often the scenario for an Alzheimer’s patient.

In my mother’s case, which is not unlike many, she has other issues. Hers is chronic head pain. The head pain is what keeps her in bed most of the day. The head pain is what robs her of a busy and happy life. And it’s the head pain that causes her be to depressed. She has had head pain every day of her life since her mid-20’s. That is cause for depression.

Everyone gets depressed from time to time.

But as it applied to me, there had always been something or someone to snap me out of it. Some special event to look forward to; some special person who did something nice and put a smile on my face. But when a person suffers from chronic pain or Alzheimer’s or any other terminal disease, there isn’t much that can make them snap out of it because the disease or condition is with them constantly.

I have found that living ‘in the moment’ is what is important. The only thing Alzheimer’s patients HAVE is ‘in the moment’. So….it is important to find the things that make them happy in that moment.

Right now. This very minute. Instant gratification.

Some of the things that have worked for us are as follows: ~ Ice cream.

Mom loves ice cream, so as an after dinner treat, I will give her some ice cream once in a while. The smile on her face says it all. She won’t remember she had it ten minutes later, but for that moment she is happy and enjoying every mouthful. ~ Music. Mom loved music The Hamlet

and always went around the house singing. So frequently I will play music on the cable music channel and she sings or hums right along. Again, the smile on her face says it all. It’s always amazing to me that with music, it is an instant recall. ~ Fastmoving sports on tv (like the Olympics, football, basketball….even baseball, if it’s the SF Giants).

She enjoys watching her favorites and can follow along since the games move quickly. ~ Wheel of Fortune. She enjoys trying to guess the puzzles…and is still pretty good at it. ~ Looking at old family photos and her high school yearbooks. They bring smiles to her face.

Once you have established a few things that they can still enjoy, you can make them part of your routine. My mom won’t truly remember eating the ice cream or listening to the music or watching the games or playing Wheel of Fortune or looking at the photos….but she knows what they are and knows they make her happy.

But what about MY depression? The caregiver is often left with depression of a different sort. We KNOW what is happening to our loved one. And we KNOW that we can’t fix it to the degree we want.

We continue to work hard to keep them comfortable and as happy as possible. But when the lights go out at night and we’re alone with our thoughts, we KNOW what is coming. We just don’t know WHEN. What about THAT kind of depression?

For me, I try and face reality. I try and tell myself that I am doing the best I can with the resources I have. And I tell myself that my mom knows I am taking good care of her. That does give me a bit of comfort. But I also find that I need to focus on ME, as well. The best way for me to do that has been to surround myself with people I can talk with.

They aren’t experts in Alzheimer’s disease or skilled therapists. They are friends who simply care about me and let me share my thoughts.

I try and stay active with projects and people that make me happy, I work-out to keep my mind and body healthy and to relieve stress, and I have come to enjoy the quiet. Taking the time to prepare my thoughts for what is coming. Depression is a horrible thing. But, if we’re smart about it and do what we can to keep it at bay, we can move forward in spite of it. That is my goal for both my mom AND myself.

For many of us, this is the best time of the year to spend with friends, family and lots of food. The weather has turned colder and we’re ready to invite guests over to eat, laugh and make new memories for the new year.
