From Me To You...
but you will have to check in with a ticket agent at the airport.” Great! So there is more time to add. Heck, I might as well bring a large suitcase if I have to wait (it is included for free on international flights so woo hoo!). Back to the timeline. I am getting in my car at 4am which means I get up at... you guessed it, 3am. With that annoying sound mocking me, “You could have flown in the afternoon!” it seems to say.
For years now, my alarm has been a blaring, cacophony of sound. An angry klaxon, shrieking at me, “Wake up! Wake Up! WAKE UP! The noise would jar me out of sleep and hurtle me into whatever horrible thing I had decided I needed to wake up early for. Flights I couldn’t miss, children who had to go to school, deadlines I had to make. Well this is not a good way to start your day. Ahem, you get the idea. Take it from me, all that does is get me angry and no-one wants to start a trip angry. So I recently I always manage to book a flight that means I had an epiphany. Why not change my alarm have to get up at 3am. Why? I have no idea. Perhaps that is the cheaper flight, or in the frenzy to something soothing? My phone has at least of making sure I don’t miss out on a deal I ‘forget’ a hundred options to choose from, with many more that I can download - just as soon as I that a relaxing 8am flight means I need to be figure out how to do that. My children have had there 3 hours before which puts me at 5am. Still a ton of different alarm clocks through the years. do-able. Oh, right, I live almost an hour from the I remember one that yelled “Get out of bed you airport. So now I need to be in my car, passport in hand, bags packed to the limit (but not over) so lazy child!” in a Simpsons character’s voice, one that you had to throw at a wall, and the latest I can avoid checking in. Why not check in online version is the most torturous of all. You have to you say? Great idea, but I can never check in solve a math problem to switch it off. Now the online. I must have been flagged somewhere problem is something simple like “What is 7x6?” because I always go through the online process However at that time in the morning what I hear in a vague hope that this time it will be different, only to be denied at the final page. “We are sorry is, “If a train leaves Newark at 10am and the cookies need 17 minutes to bake, what color is the cat?” Not good. I resolved to use something that would gently wake me, ready to start the day with a smile on my face. I found a sweet chiming song that starts quietly, gradually getting louder if you don’t turn it off. Fantastic, I am ready for my 3am wake up call. Funny thing though, I find that I can hate anything that wakes me at 3am, even the sweet, dulcet chimes that seem to mock me anyway. I guess I am just not a morning person. But will I remember that the next time I book a flight? Probably not. Catherine Uretsky Editor, The Hamlet magazine info@estrellapublishing.com 623-594-9283 Estrella Publishing - The Hamlet magazine

Eye Health
If you’re like many Americans, you’re diligent about maintaining your health by eating right, exercising and regularly seeing your doctor. But even the most health-conscious people are often unaware of daily behaviors in their lives that could be straining or even damaging their eyes. The good news? Taking steps to protect your eyes isn’t difficult. Guarding yourself against these potentially damaging behaviors should be part of your regular health routine. * Not wearing sunglasses. Sun wear does more than just block glare. The sun can also damage your eyes over time, sometimes leading to cataracts and macular degeneration. As a precaution, ophthalmologists recommend wearing sunglasses anytime you’re outside, seeking lenses that block out at least 99 percent of UVA and UVC rays.
always keep your phone at least 16 inches away from your face and take screen breaks every 20 minutes. * Overusing eye drops. Some people form a dependency on the over-the-counter whitening drops that reduce redness by temporarily restricting blood flow to the eye’s blood vessels. Repeat users often notice that their eyes “rebound” and get red again as oxygen returns to those deprived capillaries, creating a vicious cycle. As a rule, non-prescription eye drops should not be a long-term solution to any eye issue. * Using old or borrowed eye makeup. You should replace your makeup every three months to keep from introducing new and potentially harmful bacteria into your eye area. Getting in the habit of caring for your eyes need not be time consuming or difficult if you follow these tips.
* Failing to visit your eye doctor annually. Seeing an eye doctor once a year to check on any prescription changes is important, but a visit can also help detect other serious eye issues. * Staring at your smartphone. If your eyes are often sore or tired at the end of the day, you may be spending too much uninterrupted time zeroing in on your phone. To avoid that strain and even worse symptoms such as blurred vision, dry eyes, dizziness or nausea, enlarge your font,

Germs!
Although a quick daily clean might keep some of the bacteria at bay in your kitchen, it’s important to remember that germs are lurking in the dark corners often overlooked! That raises your risk of getting sick. These are three places in the kitchen where germs like to hide, along with things you can do to clean up your act. 1. Your refrigerator It’s true, germs can and do hang out inside your refrigerator, especially in the meat and vegetable compartments. In the NSF study, these tested positive for E.coli, salmonella or listeria 36 percent of the time. To keep food safe, discard food that’s past its prime, and maintain a consistent temperature level in the fridge, ideally between 40 and 32 degrees Fahrenheit. You should also get in the habit of regularly cleaning refrigerator door handles and meat and vegetable drawers! 2. Your dishwashing station Be honest. How long has that kitchen towel been hanging on that loop by the kitchen sink? A week? A month? Can’t remember? If you’re not
Estrella Publishing - The Hamlet magazine
careful about how often you wash your towels, your kitchen rags could become a breeding ground for dangerous, stomach-sickening germs. According to researchers from the University of Mauritius, towels can develop some nasty bacteria - the kind that causes foodborne illnesses - when they’re used for a full month. Yuck! To keep things cleaner, get into the habit of grabbing a clean towel every few days. Sponges should not be used for longer than two weeks. 3. Your food prep surfaces Don’t be deceived by the spotless appearance of your countertops, sinks and cutting boards. The NSF study discovered that fecal coliform has a presence on these surfaces - 45 percent of kitchen sinks, 32 percent of countertops and 18 percent of cutting boards. Even if these are wiped or rinsed daily, it’s important to take the extra step to keep bacteria from lingering on these surfaces where they can contaminate your food. Before you gather your ingredients, wash all meal prep areas with hot, soapy water. Now that you know what to do to combat hidden bacteria lurking in your kitchen, you can prepare meals and feed your family with much greater peace of mind.

Positive Parenting With cold and flu season just around the corner you might think there isn’t much you can do to prepare for the inevitable aches and achoos. A few small changes in your routine and at home can go a long way toward keeping you and your family healthy all season long.
The toilet can be a breeding ground for bacteria, but instead of slipping on the rubber gloves and scrubbing with a grimy brush, consider ContinuousClean from Kohler. This factoryinstalled system housed in the toilet tank dispenses a consistent dose of cleaner during each flush. Simply place your preferred cleaning tablet in a compartment, choose a cleaning setting and let the system go to work. You don’t have to lift a finger. Launder towels and linens Washing linens regularly helps eliminate germs
and viruses while cleaning off dirt and grime. This is especially important when someone in the house is sick because it prevents the spread to others. For frequently used and potentially shared items like bed sheets and bath towels, be sure to wash in hot water or use the sanitize setting. Follow this by drying using the high-heat setting in order to kill any microorganisms. Disinfect household hotspots Doorknobs, cabinet handles and light switches are frequently touched by everyone who lives in your home. That means any dirt, bacteria or germs on their hands will get transferred to those surfaces and onto the hands of the next person who touches them. To prevent this spreading and keep family members healthy, wipe down common surfaces with a disinfectant wipe. It takes just seconds to do but can make a big difference. Clean hands Regularly washing hands is one of the best ways to eliminate germs and prevent illness. All family members should scrub up every time they use the bathroom to keep fingers fresh and surfaces clean. Self-care Getting proper rest and nutrition is essential to maintaining a healthy immune system that fights off the germs and viruses that increase during cold and flu season. To prioritize these two essential steps, consider meal planning and creating a regular bedtime routine. By meal planning weekly you stock your fridge with healthy home-cooked foods. At night, create a routine with relaxing activities like bathing, reading or meditating. These four simple steps will help keep your home clean and your family healthy. That way you can enjoy the best of the season, without the runny noses and raspy voices.

Respite Care Caring for an aging loved one, especially a parent, can take more commitment than any full-time job. Being on call 24 hours a day is physically and emotionally draining. In many cases, caregivers soldier on without complaint while their stress grows, their relationships weaken and their own health often suffers. If you are your parent’s primary caregiver, you likely already know how hard it is to find time to look after yourself and other family members, run errands or simply rest. Chances are, you just need a break. That’s where respite care can help. Many caregivers don’t know that respite care is an option, or how this service can change their lives. Most importantly, respite care can help improve the relationship you have with your loved one, while providing a new perspective on how to care for them. “Respite care taught me a lot about how to care for my mom,” said Sherrie Matteson, who cared for her mother for nearly six years before her mom moved into a Brookdale Senior Living community. “I learned things about caregiving I didn’t know. I recommend respite care for parents and caregivers.” 1. What is respite care?
like a long vacation. In addition, it can be a valuable resource to use when your loved one’s health further deteriorates or a new complication requires special assistance. Respite care can also be used as a resource to help caregivers think about long-term care. Recognizing you may no longer be able to care for your loved one in a few years, you can use respite care to provide an introduction to a full-time care community. 3. How do caregivers know when they need respite care support? Besides vacations and other date-specific events, you should look for a respite care backup solution whenever the quality of the care you are providing or your own health suffers because of the obligation. Choosing to move forward despite these hardships is only jeopardizing the health of yourself and your loved one. It can also cause friction in your relationship, sometimes leading to resentment. Taking a break - and ideally relaxing and having some fun - will allow you to come back and apply more passion to the care you provide. 4. Where can you find respite care resources? Many senior living communities offer respite care services, so they should be your first point of search. Look for senior living communities that are close to you, allowing for easier transportation and visiting opportunities.
Respite care offers short-term relief to caregivers, allowing them to recharge, take a vacation or just a short break. It typically involves bringing your loved one to a senior living or skilled nursing community, but professional at-home care can also be arranged. Respite care can also be utilized after a short stay in a rehabilitation facility, a hospital stay or visit to an emergency room. 2. When can respite care be used? Respite care can be used whenever you need a break or you are planning a larger event Estrella Publishing - The Hamlet magazine

Lunch Box Ideas Packing a healthy lunch is on of the easiest ways parents can support their child’s education during the day while they can’t be there. Healthy foods keep distracting hunger pangs at bay while providing important nutrients to support focus and learning. Many traditional healthy foods aren’t necessarily kid-friendly, which leaves moms and dads wondering how to pack a wholesome lunch that will actually get eaten. Fortunately, a little creative thinking and a few simple lunchbox tricks can help you create tasty meals that will fuel your kids throughout the school day. Consider these ideas and be inspired to create your own kidapproved combinations. Think outside the loaf: Sandwiches are a lunchbox staple, but that doesn’t mean you’re limited to two pieces of bread. To add variety and boost nutrient intake, incorporate fun variations. For example, use whole-grain tortillas to create wraps, or, go one step further and cut up the rolls for bite-size “sushi” that makes it fun for lunching. Another idea: use whole-wheat waffles as the sandwich ends and fill with peanut butter and banana or cream cheese and apples.
store or decide to make a batch at home, look for options packed with different vegetables and limited salt. Simply heat up in the morning and it will be ready and waiting come lunch time.
Dip and munch: If you have a hesitant kid who is known to snub their nose at fruits and veggies, consider making eating more fun by packing a side of dip. Children adore the act of dipping and it makes eating a fun, interactive activity. A little yogurt will encourage kids to gobble up fruits like orange wedges, apple slices or halved strawberries. Low-fat salad dressing or hummus is the perfect pairing for veggie straws including carrots, celery or sweet peppers. Protein pick-me-up: Protein helps kids feel fuller for longer, getting them through those lengthy school days. It’s important to pack a protein source in lunch, but meats aren’t your only option. Eggs are high in protein, so try hardboiled or scrambled and pack in an insulated container. Other kid-friendly foods high in protein include cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, beans and many nuts or nut butters. You are what you eat, so it’s important to choose your children’s foods wisely.
Colorful creations: Ever notice how everything associated with kids has tons of color? Children are attracted to vivid hues and you can use this to your advantage when you pack lunches. Put a rainbow in every lunch by packing colorful produce such as green cucumber, cherry tomatoes, purple plums, orange carrots and yellow peppers. You’ll keep things visually stimulating and the various colors of fresh foods mean they are getting a variety of vitamins and minerals. Slurp up soup: Cold lunch doesn’t necessarily need to be cold. Get a reusable insulated container and get ready to delight those kid’s taste buds with vitamin-rich soup. Connections
During the holidays, friends and families gather to celebrate and spend time together. This is a wonderful opportunity to create meaningful connections between people of different ages. However, it’s not uncommon to struggle with how exactly to do this when those of different generations, political and cultural beliefs, and religious backgrounds often seem worlds apart. If you’re looking for thoughtful ways to connect all generations of your family, from the youngest to the oldest, and bypass divisive topics these smart ideas will inspire. Passing down trades and traditions Older generations have wisdom, experience and many traditions to share with those willing to learn. Talk with loved ones about their favorite traditions and then ask which they could teach to family. You might be surprised what older generations cherish as traditions. For example, consider organizing a time for everyone to bake a time-honored recipe together. Perhaps it’s learning a holiday tradition that provides a cultural experience that younger generations have never done. Keeping an open mind and trying something new together is guaranteed to be a bonding experience.
encourage meaningful conversation, plus the app allows you to record, share and keep the stories and voices - of family and friends forever. Plan a game or movie night Games and movies are timeless activities that appeal as much to Grandma as they do to your 5-year-old. By planning a game or movie night, you’ll bring everyone together for a good time. Consider finding a board game or movie that was popular when you or your parents were kids so everyone enjoys their time together. To make the day even more special, shop for old-fashioned candy and snacks that spark nostalgia. You may have to order some items online, but it’s worth the effort because everyone will think it’s fun to sample the treats that were popular during different decades. Use these ideas to transform your next holiday into one filled with memories. You’ll inspire new connections between family members as you laugh, love and live life to the fullest.
Storytelling and archiving One of the most meaningful ways people of different generations can connect is through sharing stories. Sometimes you just need a little help getting the conversation started. That’s why Atria Senior Living, inspired by its residents, created Atria StoryWise, a curated collection of cards featuring thoughtfully selected topics and cues designed to spark memories and fuel conversation. You can spur conversation with loved ones in a similar manner with the Atria StoryWise companion app, available free to everyone. Wine Pairings Have you ever looked at a wine list and wished it actually told you what the wine tastes like? Have you ever wanted wine connoisseurs to stop swirling and sniffing, and just take a big sip? Well, you’re not alone and Dan Dunn is on a mission in the name of all things craft to take the stuffiness out of wine, make it more approachable, and let people know it’s not about the glass you drink it out of, it’s what’s in it that matters. Better yet, buck tradition, ditch the fancy stemmed glass and grab a rocks glass. “Bourbon barrel-aged wines are trending right now, and they are a great gateway for guys who typically drink craft beer and bourbon,” says Dunn. Forget everything you’ve heard about pairing wines with Brie and apples, he says. In the man’s own words, here are Dunn’s pairings. 1. With a big, juicy burger Think of a great hamburger as you would a classic artist such as Paul Simon. Both are
something special on their own, but when paired with the right partner - be it a robust cabernet sauvignon or a spindly, curly-haired tenor from Queens - well, that’s when the real magic happens. Alas, Simon and Garfunkel called it quits a long time ago, but I’m happy to report that cab and burgers are still making beautiful music together. 2. With pork The pig is indeed, as Homer Simpson once put it, “a wonderful, magical animal.” You should know going in, though, that pairing with pig is a delicate dance. For smoky roasted pork, you can go with a little richer, heavier red - say, cabernet sauvignon - but try the same thing with a honey or maple-glazed ham and you’ve got a mouthful of clash. For sweeter preparations, think mid-bodied reds like a bourbon barrel-aged red blend, aged in charred bourbon barrels for 6 months, delivering a finish as smoky as it is smooth. 4. With lamb No matter how it’s cooked - grilled, braised or roasted - that rich, savory meat demands robust red wine at its side, like a nice zinfandel, with its larger-than-life berry fruit character. The bottom line is, if you enjoy the wine then drink up!

Money Matters If you find yourself constantly postponing a review of your finances and feel your current money situation is more out of order than ever, turns out you are not alone. In fact, according to a new survey by Marcus by Goldman Sachs(R), the overwhelming majority of Americans (82 percent) wish they felt more in control of their finances. By following a simple checklist and exploring options that fit your specific circumstances, you’ll be well on your way to making the most out of your money and achieving financial well-being. 1. Get out of credit card debt. First and foremost, be conscious of any revolving credit card debt you are currently carrying, and the fees, variable rates and payment terms that may be draining your bank account. A debt consolidation loan allows you to combine your debts into one consistent, easy-to-manage monthly statement. 2. Conduct an assessment of your service providers. Take a look at your monthly expenses and see if there are ways you can lower them by switching to different providers or calling your current provider to re-examine your rates. Whether it is your car insurance or your cable and internet bill, a quick search online and a call to lower your rates could limit your monthly expenses. You should also consider easy-to-use personal finance apps, like Clarity Money, that allow you to track your finances at your fingertips
and make it easier for you to spend, borrow and save. Clarity Money can even suggest subscriptions you could cancel and help you set up savings for specific goals, so you could be more in control of your finances by the time next October rolls around. 3. Get ready for tax season. With changes to the tax law, you should take the time to prepare for next year’s taxes by analyzing potential benefits you may be able to take advantage of and figuring out what deductions you might no longer be able to claim. By getting out in front of tax season early, you can be ready for the impacts it may have and be able to file earlier, which could lead to receiving any refund earlier as well. 4. Maximize your 401(k). If your company matches employee contributions to a 401(k) account, it’s a good idea to take advantage of this and make sure you are doing everything you can to build up your 401(k). Consider making changes that could put yourself in a better place to have a nest egg ready for retirement, like increasing your contributions by 1 percent a year. 5. Check your APY. Lastly, make sure you are saving your money strategically by checking the annual percentage yield on your savings account. Make your money work for you by exploring savings account options with higher returns, rather than storing your money in accounts with interest rates near zero. High-yield online savings accounts, like those offered by Marcus by Goldman Sachs, can provide high rates so you can start making money instead of storing it. Marcus offers a rate of 1.90 percent APY on its Online Savings Account, which is 4X the National Savings Average, requires no minimum deposit to open and has no fees. Take the time to explore reasonable options that address your specific needs and put you back in control of your financial future. For information on approachable solutions to your financial management, head to Marcus.com.

Health Tips For Busy Moms heart disease. Doctors can then recommend treatments to help you stay healthy and feel your best.
Mothers are the CEO of the home. Organizing schedules, paying the bills, doing food shopping, managing pick-ups and drop-offs, and making sure everyone is healthy is just part of the job. Unfortunately, because they are so busy taking care of others, many moms often put off taking care of themselves or scheduling their own health appointments. Making your health a priority can help you stay healthy and keep illnesses at bay. Here are a few tips to help: Sleep consistency You harp on the kids about the importance of a good night’s sleep, but when it comes to your own sleep, it’s often the first thing that’s sacrificed. Sleep deprivation is common among moms for a variety of reasons. Make it a priority to get 7 or 8 hours of quality rest each night. Keeping the bedroom quiet, cool, dark and free from the distractions of devices such as cell phones and tablets can help you relax and sleep.
Fill prescriptions Your doctor’s treatment plan may include a prescription medication. Doctors advise that it’s important to fill and use the medication as prescribed. If you are not insured, or if your health insurance plan doesn’t cover the medication you were prescribed, you can check a free prescription savings program called Inside Rx which can help save an average of 40 percent off brand-name and 80 percent off retail on generic medications. Boost nutrition You meticulously pack your kids’ lunches, but when it comes to your own, sometimes you eat whatever you can grab. Eating well helps fuel the body and mind, so skip the junk and instead eat wholesome meals three times a day with healthy snacks in between. Stock the fridge and pantry with healthy foods that are easy to eat on the go and always have nutrient-packed snacks, such as dried fruit or nuts. These simple tips will help you prioritize health as you take care of your family, so you can feel your best today and in the future!
Annual physicals Just like with your kids, proactively seeing a doctor every year can help you tackle health issues head on rather than putting them off until they become a bigger problem. During wellness visits, your doctor will use health indicators like weight, blood pressure and heart rate to screen for common conditions such as diabetes and Estrella Publishing - The Hamlet magazine

Workouts for Seniors You want to live the healthiest life possible and you realize that to do so, you can’t rely on the same old exercise routine. You need to change it up and adjust your plans as you grow older. It may seem daunting, but the good news is that staying fit can be easier than you think.
“Many older adults know their fitness routines have to change as they age because of injuries, chronic aches and pains,” says Julie Logue, SilverSneakers(R) training manager for Tivity Health. “That’s why finding the right health plan during Medicare’s open enrollment period is so important. It’s especially valuable to find a health plan that includes SilverSneakers, which is the nation’s leading fitness program designed exclusively for older adults. It’s much easier to be consistent with exercise when you find a program you love.” Yoga is popular with fitness enthusiasts of all ages, and for older adults, practicing yoga can improve balance, flexibility, mental focus, core strength and breathing efficiency. It can also be a wonderful stress reliever. If you are new to

the practice of yoga, or if you feel unsure or unstable during any class, consider using a wall or chair to aid you in your balance for certain poses. Strength training, sometimes called resistance training, supports bone health and aids in the prevention of osteoporosis, improves your balance and supports a healthy weight. Regular strength training also can make everyday activities easier. Whether it’s dance or another calorie-burning cardio exercise like cycling or walking, getting your body moving is a fun and healthy way to improve your lifestyle. Cardio exercise has also been shown to improve your coordination, agility and reaction time, as well as help you manage your blood pressure and improve cognitive function. Improvements to your regular exercise routine will support you in your goal of living a healthy life, but you can take the next step with the support of a program that includes classes, digital tools and workouts designed with seniors in mind.

Managing Depression Sadness and grief are normal human emotions. These feelings can often last for a short period of time. However, when these emotions last for many days or weeks, depression becomes a concern. According to the American Psychiatric Association, depression is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, depression is among the most treatable of mental disorders. Between 80 percent and 90 percent of people with depression eventually respond well to treatment. Almost all patients gain some relief from their symptoms. It can be difficult to know when feeling down is turning into something more concerning. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, a major depressive episode may include some of these symptoms:
* Decreased energy * Difficulty concentrating, remembering or making
decisions * Insomnia, early-morning awakening or oversleeping * Low appetite and weight loss, or, overeating and weight gain * Thoughts of death or suicide * Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment
Three steps that can help Step 1: Get screened by a qualified mental health expert. Step 2: Talk to your healthcare provider about a treatment plan. Depression can be managed with the right treatment options. Step 3: Follow a treatment plan closely and take medications as prescribed.

Be Thankful
As Thanksgiving approaches we take inventory of our lives and what we are grateful for. But what if you had few to none of these things? I have spent the last two years travelling between here and Kenya. I have gone to bed with the threat of waking up to war. I have shared my room with rats, snakes, cockroaches and many other crazy African bugs. And I have learned to not take so many things for granted in my life. Working at a children’s home with 184 kids, I have seen the poorest of poor. I have lived in the bush and at times without running water, electricity and common conveniences. What I have learned is heart wrenching and joyful at the same time. These kids have come from various situations, some survived near death, torture and other atrocities hard to imagine. They are true survivors. The children at the home have next to nothing, but they are happy! They are given a chance at an education, they eat three good meals a day and have dorms with beds and bathrooms. Bathrooms are a true luxury and not easy to
find when travelling around Kenya. Usually it’s a cho, meaning a wood hut with a hole in the ground and you better be carrying tissue with you too. These children also get medical care that very few can afford. Even with these amazing opportunities, they still live in a way that most westerners could not understand. The first thing people here usually say to me is “how awful and sad it must be”, but It’s not. It is obviously not an easy life, but I am humbled to be a part of these kid’s futures and helping make their little piece of the world better. It is not easy but as a group we are making a difference. My experience in living there has taught me to be grateful for not only the big things in life but things that no one here even thinks about. It is always more of a culture shock for me to return to The States then returning to Kenya since life is hard but simple there. I wish everyone could have the experience of living in a third world country. My purpose is still to help bring awareness about Kenyan struggles and especially the wonderful children’s home that has stolen my heart. As this holiday season comes around, be thankful, be grateful but most of all don’t forget to count the ‘little’ things that we have been blessed with. When the pie burns, the turkey is dry, crazy Aunt Mary lets her mouth run off and you missed that Black Friday deal, take a breath and step back. Look around at what is important and let it go.
