From Me To You... I have found that as we get older it is hard to lose weight and sadly even easier to gain it. We also tend to gain it in more unhealthy areas - did you know that if you hold onto weight in their stomach you are more likely to have heart problems, diabetes and cancer?

So my husband and I decided that we were going to head this situation off at the pass, so to speak. We bought the shakes and used the step trackers but the weight was not really shifting. There was a funny quote on the internet that sums up my problem. It goes something like this: “Diet: Breakfast - 2 egg whites, Lunch - Caesar Salad, dressing on the side, Snack - cheese crisps, Dinner - large pizza, family size bag of Dorritos, gallon of vanilla Ice cream.” That was becoming more and more like my daily routine. I was chock full of good intentions until I sat down at night to watch tv and boom, I ate everything I could grab.

quite demoralizing to see the fat melt off someone else and not experience that myself. We had all our measurements taken before we started this and I am holding on to the idea of seeing those numbers go down when we get measured again in a few weeks. I do feel stronger and that was one of my goals so I guess I am getting something out of this. I just have to stay away from the pint of vanilla ice cream stashed under the broccoli in the freezer. Realizing that we needed help we brought in a professional who would keep us accountable. Not only does he train us twice a week, he also helps with food choices and motivation. I am not a happy exerciser. I don’t like to sweat, or even move too much to be honest, and Ben is great at making it ... fun? Yes I can admit that exercise can be fun. We play games and laugh and sweat. A lot. BREAKFAST SERVED ALL DAY! OPEN DAILY AT 7AM

Now on to the most annoying part of this experience. We do the same exercises, eat healthy food and limit our calories. My husband has lost over 10 pounds in three or so weeks and I can see he is becoming more healthy. Me? I have gained weight. I know that muscle weighs more than fat and I think I am losing inches but it is

Furry Friends As you’re filling the candy buckets and assembling the perfect costumes, be sure to heed these tips from the experts at PetSmart for a Halloween filled with pet-friendly fun:

Out and about Make sure pets have proper identification by microchipping and registering your pet’s microchip, and keeping identification and registration tags on their collars. This is especially important around Halloween, when open doors offer more opportunity for escape. If your pet will be joining the family while trick-or-treating, be sure they are visible to motorists by using a reflective collar, harness or leash. Costume concerns Just like with children, there are safety issues to consider when costuming your pets. Not all dogs like wearing clothes and some may become stressed or agitated while wearing a costume. However, many dogs just need a little coaxing and positive reinforcement.

Keep the Halloween fun going by establishing some rules for your family and any guests joining the festivities: * Xylitol a sugar substitute found in candy, gum, mints and baked goods can be extremely dangerous to pets, even in small amounts. Just 1/8 teaspoon can cause dangerously low blood sugar in dogs and 1/2 teaspoon can cause liver damage. If xylitol is consumed by your pet, take him or her to a veterinarian immediately. * Natural stimulants in chocolate can cause a range of symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea and abnormal heart rhythm. * Raisins may cause a toxic reaction in dogs from vomiting to kidney failure. * Cellophane, plastic and paper from candy wrappers and lollipop sticks can cause gastrointestinal upset. * As an alternative to sharing dangerous snacks, stock up on some seasonal dog-friendly treats and set out a pet-specific bowl.

* Start with a simple accessory, like a bandana, working your way up to a costume. * Make sure costumes include eye and ear holes, and if they don’t, consider removing whole portions of the costume to ensure your pet’s ability to see, hear and breathe. Make sure there Find more tips and tricks for keeping your pets safe this Halloween at PetSmart.com. isn’t anything that could be a tripping hazard. Also, be sure to check the costume for little parts within biting or chewing distance. * Dogs can overheat easily, so ensure your dog’s clothing is not too bulky or heavy if the weather is warm. * In the end, the top priority should be your pet’s comfort level. “It’s fun to include our pets in our celebrations, but it’s also important to be aware of the dangers associated with Halloween to ensure their safety,” said Jennifer Freeman, DVM, PetSmart’s resident veterinarian and pet care expert. 4 Estrella Publishing - The Hamlet magazine

Home Sweet Home

Did you know that many police departments have a community affairs officer whose primary goal is to build a strong working relationship with the community? That means you have access to a trained safety expert who wants to give you ideas to keep your home and neighborhood safe. Read on for simple home security hacks from a recent home safety evaluation conducted by a police officer. 1. Change the locks When was the last time you changed the locks? How many previous owners have there been and how many keys have been given out to neighbors, friends, family or delivery people? You never know who has a second copy, and for less than $100 at Home Depot, you can change your locks immediately. 2. Replace outdoor lightbulbs

If you don’t have outdoor flood lights, get them. If you have them, make sure the bulbs are in working order.

3. Place an alarm sign in your yard Many would-be thieves won’t approach a house if they think it has an alarm. You can get an alarm sign online. 4. Buy an indoor camera Cameras can capture a suspect in the act and let homeowners check the footage from anywhere. FunLux indoor cameras offer high-quality images and night vision, and they’re motion activated and affordable. You can get them on Amazon for about $25 each. 5. Get out the garden shears Every bush outside of your windows should be below the window line, usually 2-3 feet in height, to maximize your visibility from the inside of your house to the outside, so that means you must trim your bushes. You can get garden shears at your local hardware store for $15. 6. Bake some cookies One of the best ways to stay safe is to work together as a neighborhood. We all need to keep an eye on each other and what better way to start that relationship than with a plate of cookies? 7. Protect your neighborhood There are many measures you can take to improve your community safety, with varying levels of affordability. Outdoor security cameras, can reduce crime and prevent would-be criminals from entering the neighborhood. 8. Ask for a security survey Officers will walk around your house, inside and out, to assess its safety and could reveal some surprising tips. They want to help, and they are motivated to solve and prevent crime. For more information on keeping your home and neighborhood secure, visit www.flocksafety.com/ securityhacks.

Medicare Part D Medicare Annual Enrollment runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, so now is the time for a refresher on key words to inform your coverage decisions for 2019.

Deductible, copay and coinsurance A deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket in a given year for eligible prescription drugs before your plan’s coverage kicks in. The deductible can vary from plan to plan. Some plans charge a copay, a flat fee, each time you fill a prescription. For example, a plan may require you to pay $2 when you fill a prescription for generic drugs and a higher amount for brandname drugs. With coinsurance, you pay a set percentage of the cost of the drug instead of the flat fee associated with a copay. Formulary Part D plans are offered by private insurance companies, and each plan has what’s known as a formulary, a list of the prescription drugs covered under the plan. “When considering a Part D plan, review the formulary to make sure your

medications are covered,” said Kent Monical, of UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement. And keep in mind that plan formularies can change from year to year, so don’t assume that the drugs covered under your current plan will carry over in 2019. Drug tiers A Medicare Part D plan’s formulary is made up of tiers, depending on the cost of the medications. The lower tiers generally include preferred generic drugs, and many plans cover these medicines with low or no copay or coinsurance. Higher tiers generally include brand-name drugs and specialty medications and tend to have higher copays or coinsurance. So, talk to your doctor to see if you can take a generic version. Preferred pharmacy network A Part D plan may designate a preferred network of pharmacies, and if you use these pharmacies, you can save money on prescriptions. The donut hole The majority of Part D plans have a coverage gap known as a “donut hole.” For example, in 2019, you enter this donut hole once your outof-pocket costs for prescription drugs reach $3,820. While you’re in the donut hole, you will pay a percentage of the cost of the drugs. In 2019, once your out-of-pocket costs reach $5,100, you exit the donut hole and pay a smaller coinsurance. But, the days of the donut hole are numbered. Beginning in 2019, the maximum you will pay in the coverage gap for a branded drug is 25 percent of a drug’s cost. For generic drugs, it is 37 percent, but in 2020, that will be reduced to 25 percent as well. To learn more about Medicare or Medicare Annual Enrollment, visit UHCOpenEnrollment.com.

Money Matters We’re officially in autumn when we bring in what we planted in the spring. But the concept of planting and gathering isn’t confined to agriculture. In fact, it can be used in investing. So what can you do to help work toward a successful investment “harvest”?

Plant the right “seeds.” When farmers plant crops, they know what to expect When you invest, you too need to plant “seeds” by choosing investments that are designed to help meet your goals. For example, to accumulate enough money for a comfortable retirement, you will probably need to own a reasonable percentage of growthoriented vehicles, such as stocks. Nurture your “crops.” If you want to keep your investment portfolio healthy, you also must find ways to nurture it. First of all, you will need to keep adding new dollars regularly, but you might

12 Estrella Publishing - The Hamlet magazine

also need to do some “weeding” of your own, because over the years, you may have purchased some investments that, for one reason or another, are now no longer suitable for your needs. If that’s the case, you might be better off by selling these investments and using the proceeds for new ones that could fill the gaps. Diversify. Farmers plant a mix of crops so if one crop fails, it won’t sink the farm. As an investor, you, too, need to diversify, because if you only own one type of asset class, and a financial downturn hits that asset, your portfolio can take a big hit. Spreading your dollars among stocks, bonds, cash and other investments can help reduce the impact of market volatility. Harvest season only lasts a few weeks, but doing a good job of growing and managing your investment crop can help you reap the rewards far into the future. Goodyear Citizens Police Academy, Bringing Together A Community

As a resident of the City of Goodyear for the last 15 years, I can truly say, I am a proud resident. What would make any resident say that? Number one on my list was the safety and well being of my family. Second was the cleanliness of the city, and third was the sense of community that pulls together in time of need and always with a smile. I have learned the importance of policecommunity partnerships and citizen involvement in a fight for a safer city. Chief Geier has introduced citizen involved programs such as Coffee With A Cop and the Goodyear Citizens Police Academy. Coffee With A Cop is where the residents get a chance to get to meet the officers who serve our city to discuss any issues. The Goodyear Citizens Police Academy is a 10-week, 30-hour course designed to take the citizen on a behind the scenes look at the everyday operations of the Goodyear Police Department. The course includes operations, 9-1-1 communications, patrol procedures, traffic enforcement, drug unit, criminal investigation, K-9, special assignment, use of force encounters, NET, narcotics and gangs and an eight hour ride along.

neighbor (who was a wannabe DJ) had the music so loud that it rattled her windows and her husband could not sleep. After the call was over the officer and I discussed the matter at hand, and I said to him, how great is this for me as a DJ when a disturbance call was, “All About That Bass, No Treble!” There are so many details to cover in the Citizens’ Police Academy, that is why 30 hours are needed to graduate and to better understand what the officers do day to day. Overall, I would highly recommend the Goodyear Citizens’ Police Academy. The Goodyear Police Department has made great strides with this program and has become the model for other police departments across the country to implement this program in their cities. What I personally took away from this program was that behind the uniform and the badges the officers carry, they are human beings who took an oath to protect and defend our city and its citizens. In a nutshell, there are simply bad people who want to cause trouble and have no regard for personal property or respect for others. This is not acceptable to the residents of Goodyear and we are simply sending a message to criminals you are not welcome in our community. There is no racial profiling, just men and women who want to uphold the letter of the law. The bottom line is these officers are mothers, fathers, husbands or wives, parents and or grandparents too, just like us. They are normal, they are friendly and they care about you and I the citizens and residents of Goodyear.

In the Ride-Along Program, you must have Submitted by Ray Martinez no felony convictions or charges pending, no misdemeanor charges in the past year or charges pending, you cannot be on probation, you cannot have a pending lawsuit against the city of Goodyear or the Police Department. You must pass a background check, sign a waiver and can only ride up to twice in a twelve month period. My ride along experience was outstanding with six traffic stops, and two disturbance calls. The highlight for me as a professional DJ was a disturbance call at 5:00 PM from a woman complaining that her husband (who is a Phoenix Police Officer) was trying to sleep, but the Estrella Publishing - The Hamlet magazine

School Zone Finding the support teachers need during the school year

The school year has begun, and while the backto-school expenses of many parents are done for the summer, students will still have ongoing needs throughout the year. But parents are not the only ones who spend their own hard-earned cash to make the school year a success, and they are not the only ones that can expect the costs to continue throughout the year. According to Bankrate, the average teacher spends roughly $530 of their own money to pay for supplies, snacks and other items for use by their students during the school year. These supplies often include things like paper, rulers, scissors, notebooks, pencils, glue and poster boards, and while they must be purchased at the beginning of the year, they often must be replaced throughout the year as well. While these expenses can quickly add up, teachers are rarely compensated for these costs, and yet still cover these in order to create the best educational

14 Estrella Publishing - The Hamlet magazine

experience for their students all year long. Saving money on your expenses For teachers, the example above is probably all too familiar. Additional expenses small or big can take a toll, so minimizing costs here and there is crucial. It all begins with shopping at the right places with the right prices. Staples, the back-to-school specialty store, always offers a diverse collection of name-brand and exclusive supplies, services and resources to meet the demands of any classroom. In addition, Staples offers a 110 percent price match guarantee within 14 days. Perhaps most importantly, Staples offers instore specialists that are always available to help you with your needs, ensuring you get the best support you possibly can and have all of your questions answered. Staples also carries supplies all year long, at competitive prices whether it is the second week of school or the second semester. It is the one-stop destination for this school year and beyond. Thought Habits What quote motivates you the most? We as humans are aspirational by nature and many quotes appeal directly to our nature. Quotes serve as a reminder about who we want to become.

We have what we call thought habits; habitual ways of thinking that allows us to either talk ourselves into opportunities or out of opportunities on a daily basis. Thought habits also impact whether one’s thinking is mostly positive or negative. The words of Henry Ford, “Think you can or think you can’t, either way you will be right,” became an important mantra for life that instilled confidence within me, especially when trying new things. A quote by W. Clement Stone, “To every disadvantage there is a corresponding advantage. Find it!” became an important belief and driving force in my life. Maybe I saw the “find it” as more of a challenge. No matter the reason why, I am grateful that this quote has become an important part of my life. When I heard Tony Robbins say, “Success

leaves clues,” my realization was that there was no need to reinvent the wheel. Learn from the masters. Take what you learn and use it to go further, faster and easier through life.

Here’s an idea for success. It is what I call setting up the game to win. Where is the first place you go to when you get out of bed in the morning and the last place you go to at night before going to bed? Put a book of quotes in that room and read one or two quotes to start and end your day. Do this daily for 30 consecutive days (keyword consecutive). I must caution you: this will turn into a daily habit and an easy way to begin changing or reinforcing your thought habits. Got kids? Imagine if this became one of their daily habits for success…such as a daily breakfast and bedtime routine. As we say in parenting for prevention and success; start early and often. Now is a perfect time to start. Teen Dating

Dating is something for which many parents feel unprepared, yet whether we like it or not, our kids may already be sizing up potential dates to the next school dance or football game. It seems like only yesterday that we called them our babies. Now, for the first time, they are facing the unknowns of romantic relationships. And parents…there’s no turning back. Dating can be wonderful but adults are often unaware that teens experience dating violence. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and it affords me the opportunity to share some alarming statistics that every parent should know. • Nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner in a single year. • One in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner, a figure that far exceeds rates of other types of youth violence. • One in 10 high school students has been purposefully hit, slapped or physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend.

16 Estrella Publishing - The Hamlet magazine

Teenagers are going to date and experiment with different types of relationships. And they should…it’s fun and exciting to meet someone new. However, as a parent, how can you ensure your teenager is making good decisions about dating? The facts are scary but with guidance and support, teens can learn about healthy relationships and get the strength and courage needed to leave those that are not. So where do you start? Talk to your children and start young. Talking about and modeling positive behavior is a critical part of teaching your child about healthy relationships. Talk to your child about what makes a relationship healthy and how to recognize the red flags of an unhealthy one. Loveisrespect.org is a great resource to review with your child to spark productive, nurturing conversations. In addition, ask openended questions about what they think about relationships, and listen actively and without judgment to their responses. Sometimes we do everything right and our child still ends up in a questionable relationship. If that’s the case, do the following: • Give your teen a chance to talk. Listen quietly to the whole story and tell your child that you’re there to help, not judge. If your teen doesn’t want to talk to you, help find another trusted person for him or her to talk to. • Focus on your child’s safety and selfesteem. Point out how unhappy your teenager seems to be while with this person and the possibility of harm or danger.

October 2018

• Let your child know that abuse always gets worse. While it may start as minor verbal or physical abuse, it is likely to get worse if not stopped immediately. If your teenagers want to break up with an abusive partner, help him or her be prepared by doing the following: • Advise your child that the breakup be definite and final. • Develop a safety plan for when they find themselves in uncomfortable circumstances. • Tell him or her to avoid walking or riding alone, and traveling with a friend is best. • If necessary, have your child consider changing class schedules. • Get help from guidance counselor, school principal, or, if necessary, the police. We can’t control our kids, but we have significant positive influence over them. You may think your kids don’t listen to you…but they do. Talking to your child and modeling positive relationship behavior is a great start.

Estrella Publishing - The Hamlet magazine

At Sojourner Center, we believe that Teen Dating Violence is a critical issue since it impacts so many young people. We are committed to providing information and resources to prevent it and offer support for those who find themselves enmeshed in such a relationship. Our Community Outreach team held tabling events at 23 high schools and other venues during the last year, making direct contact with nearly 4,000 individuals to answer questions, provide awareness about healthy relationships and assist with on-the-spot safety planning for those who disclose abusive relationships. We are honored to work in conjunction with agencies which focus on teens for these matters, such as Paint Phoenix Purple, Bloom 365, Kaity’s Way and Teen Lifeline, and we are proud of the difference we are making for these young people.
