From Me To You...

Back to School! Those three words struck terror in my heart as a child, new people, new schedules, new places, new opportunities to embarrass myself with the amount of things I didn’t know. Would my new back-to-school outfits be cool or not? Would I get the teacher everyone loved, or be stuck with the ones everyone dreaded? The list was endless.

As a parent I felt slightly differently about back to school time. Entertaining 4 small people of varying ages for several months in the blistering heat of summer vacation went rapidly from an adventure full of opportunities to becoming a burden of keeping them busy and trying to stop the endless bickering. I must say that despite my resolutions at the beginning or each summer I did use television and later the internet in heavy doses - always in a educational way, of course ;) Now I am getting a degree and back-to-school applies to me. It is very different approaching education as an adult who has chosen to reapply myself to academia. I am soon to begin my second year as a Mature Student and this

time I have a confidence in my abilities as well as an interest in what I will be learning.

Finding notebooks and pens is fun when I am doing it for myself. Ordering text books and choosing my subjects holds an appeal that I don’t remember from my youth. I studied Shakespeare in high school and we all dreaded it. The groans as we tried to understand the language would reverberate around the classroom. Now I see Twelfth Night on the curriculum and I am excited for the challenge.

Perhaps that has something to do with my ability to get help via the internet now but either way it is going to be interesting.

Having a full year under my belt I have the confidence that I can do this, and I realized that I enjoy learning. Interacting with others taking the same path and making new friends is all part of this journey and I am looking forward to going back to school!

Food and gas prices continue to rise, on top of record-high housing costs in many cities across the U.S. If you’re an older adult who is already living on a tight budget, today’s inflation can be particularly difficult. Fortunately, there are programs available that can help you save money on health care, prescriptions, food, utilities and more.

One of the easiest ways to find out if you’re eligible for benefits is to visit the National Council on Aging’s BenefitsCheckUp.org. The free and confidential tool connects older adults, people with disabilities and caregivers to benefit programs. The site is easy to use, even for people with minimal digital experience.

“It only takes a few minutes to learn about all the programs available and how to apply,” said Ramsey Alwin, president and CEO of NCOA. “For example, there are Medicare programs that can boost your budget by helping with prescription drug costs, as well as premiums, deductibles and coinsurance.”

to stress and anxiety. Those with mood disorders are even more susceptible to the negative impact of this chemical release. What you may not know is that the inflammation leads to increased levels of quinolinic acid (QUIN). QUIN is a neurotoxin that causes physical and psychological problems.

It is produced by activated immune cells known as microglia, which are the primary form of defense of the central nervous system. They are located throughout the brain and spinal cord and account for 10-15% of our brain cells.

QUIN increases free radicals and is implicated in conditions like Alzheimer’s, autism, MS, HIV and many more. Furthermore, increased QUIN is correlated with increased depressive symptoms.

It’s also elevated in the cerebrospinal fluid of people who attempt suicide.

Inflammation can also affect our body’s ability to produce the brain chemical serotonin, which plays a role in anxiety and depression. The precursor for serotonin is an amino acid known as tryptophan, which is found in foods such as chicken, eggs, peanuts and turkey. At the right level, serotonin can have a positive impact on our bodies and minds. When we have inflammation, though, tryptophan in our gut can turn into QUIN rather than serotonin.

Helping Others Together (HOT) Community Foundation was founded in 2019 by a group of philanthropic-minded women who are passionate about helping struggling children and families. Our mission is to bring people together to provide help and hope for struggling children and families in the West Valley. Throughout the year, we raise money through events and campaigns to support our Sugar Plum Fairies program, which provides a magical Christmas to struggling children across the West Valley.

We work with local school districts and other organizations to identify the families who need our help the most. There are 172 Title One elementary schools in the West Valley meaning that 40% or more of the children attending the school are low income and qualified to receive assistance through the Arizona Qualified Charity program. This year, our goal is for 225 children to have a magical Christmas of wrapped gifts of clothing, hygiene essential, toys and groceries.

Last year 267 friends and neighbors from across the West Valley volunteered 408 times. As the lifeblood of our organization, our volunteers do it all — from managing our nonprofit as members of the Board of Directors, to organizing and implementing fundraising events, to purchasing, wrapping, and delivering gifts to children during the holidays. Since our inception 508 generous friends, neighbors and local businesses have given over $216,000 to HOT. Our events such

as our Party with a Purpose and our Diamonds in the Rough golf tournament were attended by friends and neighbors from across the West Valley.

How can others help?

• Donate to HOT - We rely on the generosity of our friends, neighbors, and local businesses to contribute financially to support HOT’s mission.

Our annual Christmas in July campaign will begin July 1st and run through July 31st. Our goal is to raise $30,000. Because our overhead is so low, donors can be confident that their tax-deductible gifts are put to good use right here in the 15 cities west of Interstate 17. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law. We are also an Arizona Qualified Charitable Organization; that means individuals can deduct a $400 gift to HOT ($800 for a couple) directly off the bottom-line of their state income taxes. Yum Yum Fresh ears of corn are one of those foods that bring back memories of care-free summer days with backyard barbeques or beachside clambakes ~ yet we can take advantage of it year ‘round in its frozen and canned forms as well!

I’m a soup girl, usually ordering it when I’m dining out if it’s on the menu, and I make it at home since it’s often a great way to use up leftovers in the fridge with a few pantry additions.

This version of corn chowder is a crowd favorite ~ layering of flavors and textures ~ the sweet crispness of corn kernels, the creamy smoothness of the pureed potatoes and coconut milk, and the spicy

kick of Madras curry powder.

Many supermarkets carry McCormick Organic Mild Curry, yet you can easily order Rajah Mild Madras Curry Powder from Amazon for $7.

Summer Curried Corn Chowder 1 large yellow onion, diced 2 garlic cloves, minced Pinch of dried thyme OR ¼ tsp fresh thyme leaves 2 T unsalted butter 3-1/2 C frozen corn OR 4 ears fresh, shucked with kernels cut off cob 4 C chicken bone broth or vegetable stock 2 large gold potatoes, peeled & diced 1 tsp sugar 2 T unsalted butter, melted 1 T Madras curry powder (or mild curry if you like it less spicy) ¼ - ½ C canned coconut milk 1 T chopped fresh cilantro Salt & pepper to taste Saute onion, garlic, and thyme in butter over medium heat in a large stock pot until onion begins to soften. Add the corn, stock, potatoes, and sugar and bring to boil. Lower heat and simmer for 25-30 minutes. In separate pan, melt 2 T butter and add curry powder; cook 3-5 minutes until fragrant.

Remove soup from heat to puree in food processor. Scoop half of the soup into the bowl of the processor and blend until smooth. Return to soup pot.

Stir in curry butter, coconut milk, cilantro, salt & pepper; cook for an additional 15 minutes so that flavors can blend. Best eaten the day it’s made! And always have some crusty bread nearby whenever you serve soup!!

Back 2 School Back-to-school can be an exciting time of year for children who know what to expect. But for children headed off to school for the first time, the unknown can trigger worry and stress. The good news is that the separation anxiety children feel when starting school or child care is a normal part of development that can be eased through a variety of techniques.

1. Talk about any back-to-school worries Read books about going to preschool or kindergarten a few weeks before school begins to help ease the transition and encourage excitement. Once your children have been exposed to the idea of going to school, discuss any questions they have to ease their minds and make the impending experience seem more familiar.

2. Make school preparation special Buying a special outfit and shoes, finding a backpack with a favorite character on it and picking out a special comfort object from home to bring to school can all help create excited anticipation for the first day of school. Take some

time to visit the school before dropping your children off for the first time and let them meet their teachers. When you show up on the first day, your children will be more familiar with their surroundings.

3. Have everything ready the night before Avoid added morning stress by prepping the night before. If you’re packing lunch or snacks, make sure those are ready in advance. Lay out clothes, choose a hairstyle and make sure everything is tucked inside the backpack and ready to go so that your morning can be laidback and enjoyable. When your children feel your calmness from being prepared, they are more likely to be calm themselves.

4. Say a short goodbye but don’t sneak away Now that you’re ready, it’s time to nail the drop off! Confidence is key when dropping your child off for the first time. You’ll want to give a quick hug and kiss, provide assurance that they will have a good day and offer a short farewell, without lingering. But don’t sneak away!

Sneaking away usually adds more anxiety into the equation. Sometimes, a child will not be OK with the drop-off, and that’s part of the process.

Don’t look back, don’t turn around, just walk away confidently, and they’ll eventually adopt your attitude.

Clean Machine Face it - as much as you enjoy having a clean home, limited time and energy can make cleaning seem like a never-ending chore.

However, there are some tips and tricks that can help you optimize your time for better results, so you can get back to doing what you love.

Schedule it Just as you schedule important appointments on your calendar, make sure to block off time for at least one regular cleaning session each week, so you don’t run into the end-of-the-weekend panic or go into a whirlwind of cleaning when someone’s about to drop by. Baby Basics

If you’re expecting a new family member, you probably have lots of things on your to-do list, including that all-important list of baby supplies and equipment. But do you really need all this stuff? While everyone’s parenting journey is different, there are some items most parents consider essential to make parenting easier and more comfortable for you and your little one.

1. You can never have too many onesies From their first hours through age 2, onesies are a staple in your baby’s wardrobe for many reasons: They work well on their own in warmer weather, or as a first layer when it’s cold. Stocking up on onesies in newborn and infant sizes will get you ready for the baby’s rapid growth spurts.

2. Swaddle up with receiving blankets Before becoming a parent, you may wonder - what is the purpose of these small, thin, soft

flannel cotton blankets? The fact is that they are indispensable. Newborns love being tightly swaddled and often calm down when they’re snug in these little blankets. It’s worth having the nurses at the hospital give you swaddling lessons if you haven’t learned this yet. These handy blankets are also great as over-the-shoulder burp cloths (they cover more territory than actual burp cloths).

3. Protect your baby’s skin Speaking of all those onesies and receiving blankets, you’ll be going through a lot of laundry, so you’ll need a laundry detergent that’s tough on baby stains while also being gentle on skin.
