From Me To You...

As a child summertime was full of endless possibilities. Playing with friends, reading, going on long family walks, visiting relatives, vacationing, sleeping in, and just relaxing. As a parent it seems to be full of finding things to do with the kids. Summer camps, activities, swimming, travel, more swimming, organizing school supplies for next year, day trips, museums, and more swimming. Also in Arizona the importance of staying cool either at home or anytime we have to leave the house is at the top of the list - hence all the swimming.

This year my summer is being dubbed “The Summer of Moving Out” and with 3 kids going on to college or the start of their own independent lives, we have a busy time ahead.

As I write this I am in Tennessee with one kid (ahem adult), buying furniture and helping her set up her life here. There are so many things to help her organize that it sometimes makes my head spin, I really think moving from state to state is more complicated than moving to America here from abroad.

Once this one is settled, it is on to the next location for a college drop off. I am looking forward to that one because of the weather.

Summer in Washington state sounds a heck of a lot better than braving the Arizona heat. I can go for walks outside without applying factor 70 sunscreen, I will have to apply bug repellent though, so there is a trade off. After that we go to Hawaii. I know these kids have made some interesting choices... but who am I to argue with a week spent floating down a lazy river or touring a volcano?

Although this summer is packed with exciting trips and activities, what I am really looking forward to is the fall. I can read, sleep in, go for long walks and reconnect with friends and family.

As I think about it, it is beginning to sound a lot like the summers of my childhood, but thankfully without the specter of a new school term ahead of me!

Cool It!

As the summer cooling season gets underway, there are several practical and low-tech steps that homeowners can take to help improve the comfort of their indoor environment. Following are five tips that can help homeowners stay cool, get more value from their home’s cooling dollars and care for their home’s air. * Consider the heat source. The two most common paths for external heat to infiltrate a home are through the windows and via problems with attic ductwork. “Solar heat gain through windows is a primary source of heat gain, closely followed by attic ductwork,” says Tom Casey, an Owens Corning AirCare Contractor. “But when it comes to bang for the buck, attic issues are easier to resolve, are more affordable and may have a faster payback.”

Closing curtains and blinds or installing awnings can also help keep heat out of a home. * Size matters. Bigger is not better when it comes to a home’s HVAC system. Proper sizing of a home’s comfort system refers not only to the condenser unit that powers air through the home, but the system of ducts that deliver air to each room. A high-efficiency system will not deliver its value if ducts in the attic are leaky, loosely connected or have developed holes and tears. * Service regularly. Regular maintenance by a qualified technician can help protect the longevity of a homeowner’s investment in a highefficiency system. During the visit, the technician should ask the homeowner about any unusual noises or smells, as well as any comfort issues such as a room that is always too warm or cold.

Let Go Of The Past Letting go of things you’ve done or things that have been done to you in the past can be difficult. Like forgiveness, letting go means releasing yourself from emotional pain you live in by holding on to what happened. You’re not condoning what was done or giving anyone a pass; you’re simply deciding that you don’t want to live in that place of hurt anymore.

Letting go involves four components: 1. Change your self-talk. There’s no sense hanging on to something you can’t change.

Come up with a phrase to say whenever a memory of the past is triggered, such as “let go”, “stay in the present” or “I am not my past.”

2. Focus on what you can control by working on mindfulness, or staying in the moment and enjoying what’s in front of you. Don’t judge the past by saying you failed at something so you shouldn’t try again. Don’t make assumptions about the future by saying you’ll fail because you’re not capable, smart enough, etc. Don’t let preconceived notions get in your way. Instead, handle each situation in the now.

3. Take the perspective of a friend. If a friend did what you did, would you judge her so harshly?

Likely not. You would probably give her the benefit of the doubt or say she did her best with what she had. Apply this to yourself instead of holding yourself to a different standard.

4. Try to find a lesson in what happened. Is there

anything you learned, any takeaway from the experience?

Not all situations have obvious lessons and some may not have a discernible lesson at all. It’s always worth seeking, though. Sometimes, the lesson is in what you learned about yourself.

Life is too short to hold onto pain. Ending your self-inflicted suffering is within your control. Free yourself from your emotional chains by letting go of what’s holding you back. Be patient with yourself. You are reprogramming your brain, and this takes time and lots of practice.

Before moving to Scottsdale almost 10 years ago (and then Victory at Verrado in 2020!), I enjoyed living on Cape Cod and operating a quirky gourmet food shop called Mermaids Pantry.

Whether you find yourself by a beach or here in the desert, summer means turning off the oven and exploring refreshing, cool recipes! One of my more versatile and popular salads is Pomegranate Couscous, bursting with vegetables and a sweet bite of honey vinaigrette. It works great as side to grilled meat and seafood or as a main dish with the addition of a few slices of goat cheese over baby greens.

If you can’t find the larger pearl couscous in your local supermarket, it can be easily ordered through Amazon ~ Geten Israeli Pearl Couscous/3-pack for $8.79.

Mermaids Pantry Pomegranate Couscous Salad 3 C Large Pearl Couscous 3 C boiling water 2 T olive oil

2 small Zucchini, diced (or combo of green & yellow summer squash) 1 lb Butternut Squash, cubed ½ C Red Bell Pepper, diced ½ C Currants ½ C Dried Cranberries OR Pomegranate Arils ½ Red Onion, diced ¼ C Italian Parsley, rough chop Dressing: 1/3 C White Balsamic Vinegar 2/3 C Olive Oil 2 tsp Honey 2 T Pomegranate Juice 1 tsp Dijon Mustard 1 tsp Kosher Salt ½ tsp Black Pepper Pour boiling water over couscous and olive oil.

Allow to bloom, approx 30 minutes. Allow to cool. Toss butternut squash with 1 T olive oil, add salt & pepper to taste. Saute over med-high heat until beginning to brown; turn off heat and cover. Let it steam until tender. Allow to cool.

Combine the salad components, whisk together vinaigrette ingredients, then toss. Serve at room temp or chilled ~ can be refrigerated up to 3 days.

Burden of Debt

One of the biggest factors impacting mental health is the burden of debt. The Hidden Cost of Debt survey by National Debt Relief revealed that 70% of people believe that debt makes them feel like a black cloud hangs over them, in addition to one-in-three people reporting debt has led to an increase in anxiety and stress.

Getting outside isn’t just good for your kids’ mental and physical health - it’s an excellent way for families to bond and create memories together. Not sure where to start? Below are five tips on how you can make your outdoor space more exciting and engaging with fun activities the whole family will enjoy.

1. Sports Many kids develop a passion for sports from their parents. You can nurture their interests by regularly playing different sports with them.

While you may not have enough people to play teams, you can teach your kids the fundamentals and help improve their skills. Turn your lawn, backyard, or even the park into a mini training camp.

2. Games The tried-and-true classics like tag, water balloon fights and hide and seek are always a hit, but you can also try fun creative games as well.

You can create a backyard obstacle course with cones, pool noodles, hula hoops or any other materials you may have. Bend the pool noodles or cardboard boxes to make tunnels or hurdles, and place hula hoops, or use chalk to create hopscotch-like obstacles.

3. Gardening It’s never too early to get children involved in gardening. Teach them which plants grow best in which seasons, show them the different parts of

4. Art Arts and crafts aren’t just indoor activities. You can have your child look for natural materials in your backyard to incorporate into their art projects. For example, they can paint a rock or press flowers to use as decorations for bookmarks.

5. Camping No list of outdoor recreation would be complete without camping. You don’t need to plan for a long weekend at a state park to enjoy camping.

Simply set up a tent in your backyard, break out the sleeping bags and make sure you have bug spray and sunscreen. If you don’t have a tent, grab some blankets and get creative!
