From Me To You... We are at a new stage in our lives, we have finally arrived at our Empty Nest. It feels like an amazing achievement to be honest. I have had the responsibility of raising children since 1988 (with one year off for good behavior) and I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.
I am so proud of the adults we have raised who are leading their lives and forging their own paths. But before I can truly hand off all responsibility, I have to get the last two to the finish line - graduation and college. I just wound up two sets of final college tours, and let me tell you, I learned a few interesting things along the way. Not about college or even raising children. About the Wonderful World of Travel. That is what my life has become of late. From Mom to travel agent in one easy step. Between scouring the internet for airfares, arranging hotel accommodation, and transportation at the college, I have barely had time to catch my breath. I did discover a way to save money on flights in the process. I was searching for cheap flights from Phoenix to Pullman, Washington. I know the normal routes and airlines that service
Estrella Publishing - The Park magazine
them, but during my search a new option popped up. I didn’t want to book with the cut-rate site that had the deal, but they did show me how to get my son from here to Pullman in less time, and saved me $300 in the process - book separate tickets through two different airlines! That moment when I had purchased the first fare and was trying to secure a seat on the next one gave me chills, but it all worked out in the end. He made it there and is on his way back as I write this. This was his first solo adventure and although I was nervous that something would go wrong, he navigated it with ease. He even got to play in the snow, in April... The upside of that experience is that I know he is going to be just fine on his own, and that eases the transition into the next stage of our lives. But is it truly an empty nest? Not really, they are all still there with us, we just have to loosen the reins and let them do it on their own from here.

Home Sweet Home Do you want a bathroom update that will be stylish and functional for many years to come? More homeowners than ever are renovating using universal design principles that allow these spaces to serve people of varying ages and abilities. This provides numerous important benefits, including higher levels of safety and increased property value. Universal design creates an environment that is accessible to all people to the greatest extent possible. That means a bathroom will function as well for a child as it does for a senior. Basic principles of universal design focus on functionality, and in the bathroom that might mean adding strategic lighting, slip-resistant flooring and features like grab bars. Keep in mind, you don’t have to sacrifice aesthetics to achieve the functional goals of universal design. More options than ever are available for enhancing the bathroom’s safety and functionality while adding luxurious upgrades that are as useful as they are eye-catching. When function and fashion blend like this in home improvements, it can add significant value to your property. Consider one of the year’s top bathroom design trends: curbless showers with linear drains. This creates a barrier-free experience that is visually appealing, making it ideal for the universal design home. A curbless walk-in shower eliminates hazards like curbs or thresholds that can cause people to slip or trip. It’s easier to use whether you walk or utilize a device for assistance, such as a shower wheelchair. Curbless showers also provide an 4
Estrella Publishing - The Park magazine
open feel, which makes the space feel larger because visual lines are not disrupted.
Curbless showers are enhanced by linear drains that are installed flush to the flooring, further reducing trip hazards while adding a sleek appearance to the space. With no barrier to cross, the floor more easily accommodates a freestanding bench, a walker or other mobility aids. An added benefit is that linear drains generally avoid looking institutional, like some wheelchairfriendly bathrooms can. An excellent example of this counter-institutional trend is QuickDrain’s WallDrain, which practically disappears into the wall, offering an ultra-clean and contemporary look. A curbless shower is achievable with various drainage points, therefore offering versatility in terms of design. A curbless shower also provides flexibility regarding its location in the room, since the designer and contractor are not tied to placing the drain in a specific spot. Learn more at LRBrands.com/ QuickDrain. Deciding on shower doors is another important aspect of universal design. Glass doors work well for curbless walk-in showers because they open the space and let in light. Another option is to design the space to be completely open as a wet room. Glass dividers are a hybrid option that provide a partition without a door, but can be easily removed if you want to potentially open the space in the future. Universal design is important in bathrooms because these spaces are used every day. Whether your goal is to age in place or you want to make home improvements to improve your property value for a future home, bathrooms with stylish universal design will help you meet your goals. The Dr. Is In!
As a parent, seeing your child struggling can be overwhelming. Between 2016 and 2020, the rates of depression and anxiety in children and adolescents increased by over 25 percent. Unfortunately, these rates have continued to rise since 2020 as a result of the stress and changes from the COVID-19 pandemic. What can you as a parent do to support your child? 1. Encourage your child to talk about how they are feeling and work to increase your child’s emotional literacy. 2. Limit screen time- this one is SO hard, I get it! Unfortunately, research has shown that for every hour above 1 hour of screen time per day there is an exponential increase in depression and anxiety. 3. Know the signs of when to get helpnoticeable changes in appetite and sleep
(increases or decreases), changes in mood such as irritability and isolating, a drop in grades, and/ or less activity. The signs are not always the same for kids and adults. 4. Spend positive and productive time together as a family talking, playing games or being outside (fresh air, activity and sunlight are linked to decreased depression and anxiety). Families who know me or follow Periscope Pediatrics, know I frequently recommend the UnGame as a great way to have meaningful and deep conversations with your children in a less intrusive way. This can be done in combination with a game like UNO or Jenga or have everyone draw a card at the dinner table to get the conversation flowing. 5. If your child comes to you to discuss depression, anxiety or even suicidal thoughts, DON’T take it personally and DO take it seriously. Remain supportive and understand how hard (and scary) it likely was for them to come to you about what they are experiencing 6. Don’t be afraid to get help. Fortunately, resources are available: from teen suicide hotlines to the Crisis team who will come to your house to evaluate if your child needs a higher level of care for mental health concerns to your school counselor, short term resources abound. Just know, you and your child are not alone; this has been a difficult time for everyone and many children are struggling- your child’s mental health is not a reflection of your parenting!!! And above all, remember you are not alone! Submitted by Counselor Amber- Periscope Pediatrics

Travel Tips
Warm sand between your toes, a cool drink in your hand, the sun setting over the beautiful ocean ... these are the dreams of an ideal vacation. With an all-inclusive resort, planning is minimal so you can focus on enjoying what matters most - your vacation. The best resorts have something for everyone: mom relaxing at the spa, dad having a cocktail poolside, kids playing all day and adventurous friends seeking beachfront activities and entertainment. And while today’s all-inclusive resorts deliver elevated experiences and offerings for every age and interest, not all are alike. For example, some all-inclusive resorts offer enhanced food and beverage options served in a seaside lounge, while others may offer mojito and tequila lounges or unforgettable views with customized drinks prepared by expert mixologists. But not all resorts offer this level of service. Before you book your all-inclusive vacation, make sure your resort has the following items: 1. Look for a variety of cuisine, and then some A vacation means a break from cooking and meal planning, so when looking to book an all-
inclusive resort, make sure they offer multiple onsite restaurants to remove the hassle of deciding where to eat with your group. 2. Find all the fun in the sun Second to plentiful food and drink at hand, the best thing about an all-inclusive resort is all the activities included in your stay. Be sure to find a resort that offers everything you want. Most Mexican and Caribbean resorts have pools and beaches. But if you need adventure, seek resorts that also include water sports equipment for snorkeling and kayaking. Look for resorts offering live music, dazzling shows and dancing. 3. Privacy by the sea If your vacation is a romantic getaway, you’ll want seclusion and serenity. All-inclusive hotels often cater to couples’ needs by offering privacy options including adult pools, private swim-out suites and jetted tubs, plus romantic restaurants, world-class spas and casinos. Or, choose an all-inclusive resort with a kids’ club, which offers supervised and fun programs for children while giving mom and dad some space to hit the links or enjoy a quiet meal. 4. Education destination via culture Learning about and enjoying new cultures stimulates the mind and satisfies the curious soul, without leaving the resort. Great all-inclusive resorts integrate the local culture with engaging programs, classes and experiences that will enhance your vacation, such as salsa and merengue lessons, tequila tastings and local crafts. 5. Above and beyond hospitality You want a place that spoils you yet feels like home. The right all-inclusive resort will have more than beachfront accommodations. Seek world-class spas, personalized concierge, friendly team members and high-end offerings. Once you have selected your resort, all you need to do is have fun.

Eating Clean
We’ve all heard the phrase “clean eating” but for some, creating a daily diet made up of only these foods can be intimidating, especially when looking to put a healthy meal on the table at the end of a busy day. Fortunately, “eating clean” doesn’t have to be daunting. Susan Bowerman, M.S., R.D., CSSD, CSOWM, FAND, senior director of Worldwide Nutrition Education and training at Herbalife Nutrition, shares four ways to clear your diet clutter: * Read food labels to help you ditch extra sugar, salt and fat. Check labels for fat, sodium and sugar content to find those with the least amounts. For example, choose plain yogurt and whole grain cereals rather than pre-sweetened and refined products, and look for unsalted or low sodium canned and frozen veggies.

* Lose the refined starches and up your fruit and veggie intake. Including a fruit or vegetable at every meal can “squeeze out” many of the unwanted foods and ingredients you might otherwise eat. * Get rid of the calorie clutter in your beverages. Get in on the ground floor and see Between sugary sodas, fruit juices, alcoholic your business succeed. beverages and fancy coffee drinks, many people take in hundreds of calories a day from Secure your space in White Tanks View magazine, beverages alone. Plain tea is a Hacienda, great alternative covering Sierra Montana, Waddell Surprise Farms, and Sterling Grove because it can be drunk hot or cold, has virtually no calories, and has natural compounds that may offer some health benefits. * Clear the clutter from your fridge, freezer and pantry. Fill your pantry with high-fiber whole grains (like 100% whole wheat pasta, bread, cereals and flour, and foods like quinoa, millet and brown rice). Buy beans and canned tomatoes for soups, stews and pasta. Stock your refrigerator and freezer with plain fruits and veggies and nonfat or low-fat dairy products. BSN, PCCN, SCRN, RN, Stroke Program Coordinator at Abrazo West Campus.
Did you know that stroke has no age limits, and younger adults are increasingly affected by stroke and its risk factors? Strokes happen when blood supply to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. In either case, parts of the brain become damaged or die. Every minute counts when a stroke is suspected. May is National Stroke Awareness Month, when health care professionals remind the public that understanding the signs of stroke are key to getting care. Stroke affects about 800,000 people in the U.S. each year. Thankfully, residents of the West Valley have a Primary Plus Stroke Center nearby at Abrazo West Campus in Goodyear. Risk factors commonly associated in older adults, such as hypertension, diabetes, tobacco use and obesity are now being seen in younger stroke patients, according to Amanda Rowell, MPH,
More than 87 percent of strokes in the U.S. are ischemic strokes, caused by a clot that cuts off blood flow to a part of the brain. These types of strokes are largely treatable if a patient gets to a hospital in time. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers a simple test to act FAST if you think someone may be having a stroke: Face – ask the person to smile, does one side of the face droop? Arms – can the person raise both arms? Does one arm drift downward? Speech – ask the person to repeat a simple phrase, is the speech slurred or strange? Time – if you see any of these signs, call 911 right away. Also, note the time when the symptoms first appear, this helps health care providers determine the type of treatment needed. Allergies
If you have or suspect you have seasonal allergies, there are many ways you can address your symptoms. Take stock of your environment and learn how to relieve indoor and outdoor allergy symptoms. Below are six tips to help you manage your spring allergy triggers. 1. Wear protective clothing When you spend time outdoors, make sure to wear protective clothing to minimize your exposure to pollen and other allergens. Pants, long-sleeve shirts and hats help keep pollen off your skin and out of your hair. Make sure to wear a pair of sunglasses to keep pollen out of your eyes. Finally, when you’re ready to go back indoors, take off your shoes to minimize outdoor allergens coming into your home. Family owned & operated traditional Butcher Shop. We carry USDA prime grade meats, with a minimum of 30 day aging. Our chicken & pork is all natural with no sodium, nitrates or added solutions. We also have sausage! 14960 W. Indian School Rd, Ste 380 (623) 248-1206 oothehookmeatshop.net
2. Use an antihistamine Allergy medications like over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamines can help relieve allergy symptoms. While there are many allergy medications, a 24-hour antihistamine taken once daily can be incredibly effective in managing allergies during the day, especially if you spend lots of time outdoors. 3. Shower Showering, or at the very least rinsing off after spending time outside, can help manage allergens. Even with protective clothing, pollen and other allergens can get stuck on your hair and skin. Rinsing off any pollen can also reduce the number of outdoor allergens that make it indoors. 4. Change your clothes and stay on top of your laundry Once you finish showering or rinsing off, make sure to change into a fresh pair of clothes. Avoid putting clothes you’ve just worn outside back in the closet and try to do laundry at least twice a week. When doing laundry, make sure to use products free of fragrances and dyes. When your laundry is dry, clean the dryer lint trap after every load to eliminate any lingering allergens. 5. Use a nasal spray If you are in need of 24-hour continuous relief from nasal allergy congestion, Nasacort is a nondrowsy nasal spray with no scent or harsh taste. 6. Use an air purifier Any remaining pollen that may have snuck into the home will stay suspended in the air. Using an air purifier can remove airborne pollen, dust and other irritants from your indoor air so you can breathe easily at home. Keep an eye on the filter and regularly clean it of any trapped allergens. While there is no one-size-fits-all for allergy relief, these six tips are an excellent place to start. By using these tips, you can reduce your exposure to allergens and manage your allergies so you can enjoy spring to the fullest.

Medicare Scams Since 1965, Medicare has provided health care coverage to millions of Americans. Anyone on Medicare is at risk of Medicare-related fraud, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) continues to warn people to watch out for scammers who steal Medicare Numbers and other personal information to exploit beneficiaries’ benefits. Broadly speaking, Medicare fraud occurs when someone makes false claims for health care services, procedures and equipment to obtain Medicare payments. “Medicare fraud is a serious issue that has affected millions of people in our country,” said CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure. “Anyone on Medicare is at risk of being a target of Medicare fraud, so you should use the CMS fraud tips to stay alert to protect yourself. By being aware of potential scams and reporting any you come across, you can do your part to protect yourself and others from Medicare fraud.” How to spot Medicare scams There are many types of Medicare scams, taking the form of unsolicited emails, phone calls, text messages, social media posts and phony websites. Scammers often claim to be from the Medicare office, an insurance company or a government office. They’ll ask for your personal and financial information, Estrella Publishing - The Park magazine
such as your Medicare or Social Security Number, so that they can submit false claims for payment.
Remember that Medicare will never call, text, email or contact you through social media asking for your Medicare Number. Some common Medicare scams to watch out for include: * Offers of “free” genetic testing * Calls or emails about free medical equipment, such as a knee brace, walker or cane * Solicitations for other services, such as offers of “paid” clinical research trials While this is not a comprehensive list, these examples give you an idea of how to spot potential Medicare fraud. Scammers will do their best to present these services and products as genuine in exchange for your Medicare Number. How to protect yourself Now that you know how to spot Medicare fraud, you’ll need to know how to protect yourself from potential fraudsters. Remember to: * Guard your Medicare Number just like your Social Security card and credit card * Share your Medicare Number only with trusted health care providers * Review your Medicare statements, watch for services billed that look suspicious, and ask questions if something looks wrong How to report scammers Reporting Medicare fraud protects you and millions of other people with Medicare and those with disabilities. If you or someone you know have experienced Medicare fraud or suspect an offer you’ve received is a scam, report it as soon as possible. You will never be in trouble for reporting fraud. To learn more about Medicare fraud, visit Medicare.gov/fraud. To report potential Medicare fraud, you can call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) or report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc. gov. May 2022

Back To Normal The pandemic caused massive disruptions in health care, from cancellation of elective surgeries to patients putting off critical screenings and procedures, including colonoscopies, mammograms, knee or hip replacement surgeries, and even in some cases more urgent heart procedures. As a consequence, many preventable health problems may show an alarming increase in the near future. Anesthesiologists who provide anesthesia or sedation for many of these procedures urge patients to get back on track and schedule your test, screening or surgery as soon as possible, especially because some hospitals and health systems are experiencing a backlog. “With safety measures in place and COVID-19 numbers decreasing, it is vital for everyone to resume their lifesaving and life-changing screenings and procedures,” said Randall M. Clark, M.D., FASA, president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). “Your health and well-being may depend on it.”
and for as long as possible afterward. Quitting even the day before surgery helps. Connect with your anesthesia care
team Whether you have an appointment with your anesthesiologist in advance of your procedure or meet them immediately before, be sure to share details about your overall health, medications you are taking, use of recreational drugs (including marijuana) and alcohol, your previous experience with anesthesia, your fears and any questions you have. Know what - and when - to eat and drink When your surgery is planned, your anesthesia care team will let you know when to stop eating or drinking prior to the procedure. In many cases you will be told to stop eating eight hours before the surgery, but you may be able to drink clear fluids up to two hours before.
If you are scheduling a long-delayed screening or procedure that requires anesthesia or sedation, ASA recommends seven ways to ensure you are prepared and as healthy as possible.
Don’t assume you should stop your medications In most cases, you should continue taking your medications before the procedure because they are important to your health. There are exceptions, so be sure your surgeon and anesthesiologist know which medications - both prescription and over the counter - you are taking, as well as any vitamins and supplements, so they can direct you.
Practice healthy behaviors Adjusting your diet to include healthier choices in the weeks leading up to your surgery or procedure can help you become stronger and recover quicker. Exercise can also help reduce complications and hospital stays, so if you are active, keep it up, and if not, consider working with your doctor to increase activity levels in the weeks before surgery.
Learn about your pain management options Many people assume opioids are the only drugs that will relieve postsurgical pain. In fact, there are many pain management alternatives that don’t carry the same risk of misuse, including ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Your anesthesiologist will work with you to develop a safe and effective plan to help you manage your pain.
Stop smoking Smoking increases the risk of problems such as wound infections, pneumonia and heart attacks. Quit smoking as soon as possible before the procedure - preferably a week or more before -
Advance preparation can help ensure you are ready for a procedure, but it’s important to take that first step by scheduling your important test or surgery without delay.
