From Me To You...

It is amazing what you can buy online now.

Everything from office supplies, to medication, to treats from your hometown. If you are anything like me you have a subscription to Amazon which makes it all too easy to click a button and have almost anything delivered within a couple of days.

In the past, or BC as I like to call it (Before Covid), this was seen as lazy or pandering to big business. Now it is a lifeline. Local businesses are more and more frequently offering online options and delivery, and being able to stay at home is the way to go. We can chat with family and friends far and wide, through video chats. Our children can still get a modicum of education, although the quality of that education has been reduced dramatically. We can, to a degree, live our lives and maintain a functioning society.Could you imagine life without the internet? It is so much part of our lives that I barely remember how to function without it.

Now try to imagine going through the pandemic without that lifeline. I think things would be very different indeed. Good grief, people would have to entertain themselves and they would absolutely be more isolated.

I have been looking up the 1912 Spanish Flu pandemic and the parallels to today are remarkable. Masks recommended by the government. Lockdowns. Businesses and schools

closed temporarily. Vaccination sites popping up. And even a rash of crazy claims that would ‘cure’ you - quinine or bloodletting anyone?

What they didn’t have then that could have made a huge difference in reducing the number of deaths was antibiotics. The flu vaccine helped with the initial infection, but the pneumonia and other infections that set in as a result of that flu ran rampant, killing many thousands of people. Antibiotics could have made all the difference and they were so close on the horizon.

Alexander Flemming discovered Penicillin in 1928, a mere 16 years after the Spanish Flu decimated the world.

Once again science is coming to our rescue. This time more swiftly than Penicillin and with the amazing potential to eradicate this virus that has changed the world for all of us. At it’s most basic, the vaccines will protect individuals and once enough people are inoculated it will protect those who are unable to be vaccinated.

Like many of you I am waiting for my turn to get the vaccine. It is frustrating for sure, but I know that once I have been cleared I will be able to hold my loved ones once again and that is worth waiting for.

Online Dating Whatever your dating life was like before the pandemic, it’s most likely changed due to the circumstances at hand. Thankfully, many onlinedating platforms are rising to the occasion, providing secure and safe ways for people to connect. Here are some tips for mastering the art of virtual dating and navigating in-person dating first steps.

by Harris Poll for Empower Retirement and Personal Capital reveals a change in attitudes about finances from April - as the pandemic’s effects were beginning - to December of 2020.

Reacting to uncontrollable world events, one theme emerged: People want to feel more in control of their own finances, whatever comes next.

These tips can help you feel more confident financially, no matter your circumstances.

Mask Choice

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, you have probably wondered what kind of face mask provides the most effective protection but is also easy and comfortable. You have probably also heard that double masking provides better protection against the more easily transmissible variants of COVID-19 that have been spreading recently. So how can you know what kind of mask to use?

Homemade masks Many people have relied on homemade cloth masks, as well as face covers such as bandanas and neck gaiters. But how effective are they?

Because respiratory droplets and the airborne coronavirus particles they might contain are extremely small, it is still possible for someone wearing a cloth mask to be exposed to COVID-19 if they are close to someone who

is infected. Loose-fitting cloth masks, singlelayer masks, or wearing them incorrectly are far less effective in offering any protection from COVID-19 or other viruses. For these reasons, bandanas and neck gaiters are examples of some of the least protective cloth masks. If you prefer homemade cloth masks, creating masks with several layers offers better protection than a makeshift bandana or other cloth. You should also wash masks frequently in soap and water to keep them as clean as possible.

Surgical masks Surgical masks are meant to be single-use only and are disposable, and they are not tight-fitting.

While they offer some protection for those people around the wearer, surgical masks are of limited use for protecting the wearer from airborne particles. They can be most effective when they are worn underneath an additional, tighter-fitting cloth mask.

N95 respiratory masks Worn by healthcare professionals in contact with infected patients, N95 respiratory masks are designed to catch particles as small as 0.3 microns when properly fitted to form an airtight seal covering the wearer’s nose and mouth.

While many assume (incorrectly) that N95 masks operate like strainers, allowing only particles small enough to pass through, these masks actually operate more like a spider’s web, using electrostatic force to “trap” particles. These masks are primarily needed by first responders and healthcare providers and the general public should avoid wearing them to prevent shortages.
