From Me To You...

Have you ever found yourself trying to pick a Netflix show to watch and an hour later, you’re still scrolling through an endless library, contemplating the implications of your choice on the space-time continuum? In a world filled with so many possibilities, you might think that having endless choices is a luxury. However, as a victim of choice paralysis, for me it’s more like navigating a buffet with a never-ending menu.

Welcome to choice paralysis - where too many options leave us paralyzed, unable to make a decision.

As amusing as the Netflix scenario is, for some, choice paralysis can extend beyond leisurely activities to more essential decisions, such as career paths or major life milestones.

The pressure to make the right choice can be paralyzing, leading to prolonged periods of indecision and anxiety. The paradox of choice, (as coined by psychologist Barry Schwartz) presents the idea that too many options can diminish the satisfaction derived from the final selection. Or as I like to say, it’s not fun anymore!

If any of you have jumped into the heady whirlwind of home building you have seen the answer to this conundrum.

A well timed visit to the showroom has a designer with a limited selection of flooring, countertop and lighting available for you, making the process much easier. Give me three choices and I am happy, I will swoop in and masterfully decide the entire look for my environment in under half an hour. Having recently gone through the agonizing process of remodeling without help, I can say that it was much harder to make confident decisions by myself, and at times my brain felt like candy floss.

In hindsight, once I broke through the idea that the wrong decision would be a disaster, making choices was much easier.

So I challenge you to pick up that remote control, point it at the TV and make a choice.

And if you cant seem to pick, there are endless reruns of Friends and The Big Bang Theory to keep you entertained long into the night.

If you are thinking about purchasing an EV for the first time, here are some questions to consider to make a smart purchasing decision: 1. What is the long-term cost?

The initial price on the sticker doesn’t cover everything for any vehicle, and the same is true for EVs. Drivers must consider the cost of maintenance, insurance and, of course, fueling up.

However, the cost difference to charge an EV is an incentive for many car shoppers. Hankook found that 24% of drivers are most likely to switch to an EV for a lower cost to charge rather than pumping gas.

4. What does my local charging infrastructure look like?

Charging stations continue to pop up across the U.S., but is there a charging station convenient to your daily life?

Hankook found that 30% of drivers are more likely to consider driving an EV if there were more charging stations near where they work or live.

Knowing where the most convenient stations are will make the transition to charging even easier.

There are many questions that new EV buyers should ask before making the shift, but thinking strategically and asking questions about factors that may impact you in the long run will set you up well for an electrified future.

2. What type of maintenance will my EV need?

The general consensus among drivers is that EVs require less maintenance than their ICE counterparts, but understanding what is needed to keep the vehicle running at peak performance is still key. While there’s no oil to change in your EV, brakes, fluids and various air filters will still need to be maintained over the course of your vehicle’s life. As a new EV owner, it is important to be aware of the maintenance needs.

3. What tires come on my EV? Did you know that there are tires specifically made for EVs? EV tires are created with the change in road noise and increased weight of the vehicle in mind. If the tires on your vehicle are not EV-specific, consider purchasing new ones through rebates and other tire sale opportunities.

And don’t forget to consider tire qualities that are important to both yourself and your driving habits. The Gauge identified performance (14%), safety (14%) and longevity (14%) as the top considerations for EV drivers when purchasing a new set of tires.

Heart Health

Valentine’s Day is a good time to remind ourselves that while heart disease is still prevalent in American men and women, it can be managed and in some cases, prevented altogether. The traditional risk factors for heart disease – such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and obesity – affect women and men equally. It’s an equal opportunity condition, which is why annual health check-ups and screenings are so important, according to Tammy Querrey, Director of Clinical Cardiovascular Care for Abrazo Health.

The most common forms of heart disease are coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, heart valve disease and heart failure, explained Querrey.

may lead to a heart attack. The most common symptoms of a heart attack are chest pain/ pressure, or pain that occurs in the shoulders, arms, back, jaw, or it may also mimic indigestion.

The pain may get worse with activity and decrease at rest.

• Arrhythmias, also known as atrial fibrillation (Afib) or irregular heartbeat, are abnormal heart rhythms that occur when the electrical impulses in the heart are not working correctly. Common symptoms may include fluttering in the chest, sweating, fatigue and dizziness.

• Heart valve disease is when one of the valves is not working correctly. Symptoms can include shortness of breath with activity, fatigue, swelling in the legs/feet, dizziness, or chest pain, and a heart murmur is typically heard. Treatment options for valvular disease include minimally invasive Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) or open heart surgery.

• Heart Failure is when the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the needs of the body.

People may experience shortness of breath with activity, swelling in the legs, rapid weight gain, and increased fatigue, these are often dismissed as being age related or out of shape. This can often be treated with medication, or cardiac devices.

• Healthy lifestyle choices can make a world of difference for healthy hearts, said Querrey.

Stay active and try to get at least 30 minutes of moderate activity five days a week. Follow a healthy diet with more fruits and vegetables and less fast or processed foods, maintain a healthy weight, try to manage your stress, quit smoking, and get regular health screenings and physicals.

Don’t hesitate to call 911 if you’re experiencing symptoms described above.

The good news is that there are many treatment options for heart disease that not only allow patients to live longer, but also improve their quality of life. Being proactive about your health can help you enjoy time with your Valentine year after year.

Ah, February in Phoenix, a time when the cacti shiver and the sun decides to play hide and seek. But you know who’s always on time and never late for the party? Bugs! Yes, those tiny six-legged critters buzzing around like they own the place. Let’s take a closer look at the hilarious world of bugs in Phoenix during February.

First up, we’ve got the ladybugs. They must have mistaken February for a fancy dress party because they show up in their vibrant red coats ready to strut their stuff. “Welcome to the Ladybug Fashion Week,” they seem to say as they pose on every green leaf they can find. After all, who needs a catwalk when you have a rose bush?

Then there’s the caterpillars, inching along like they’ve had one too many Valentine’s Day chocolates. These little guys are on a mission to nibble their way through every green leaf in sight. Their motto? “Eat, sleep, and repeat.” It’s like they’re training for a leaf-eating competition, and they take their training very seriously.

But wait, what’s that buzzing sound? Ah, it’s the bees! February seems to be their time to shine, and they’re zipping around like they’ve had one too many cups of coffee. They’re so busy collecting pollen that they seem to have forgotten it’s not summer yet. “We’re just

Legal Advice AVOID PROBLEMS WITH IRA DESIGNATIONS For 401ks, IRAs and other qualified retirement accounts, the designated beneficiary form directs how the funds will be paid on your death.

Common problems that arise with beneficiary designations are: • When the “Estate” or no beneficiary is listed, so a probate is needed and the IRA will be not be stretched for 10 years and will be taxed at a higher rate.

• When a beneficiary dies before you, the financial company rules apply to who gets the deceased beneficiary’s share. When a trust is listed as the beneficiary, your directions are applied.

• When the designated beneficiary is a minor, not a trust for the minor, then a costly court conservatorship is need and deferred tax benefit is at risk.

• When your spouse, who is not your children’s parent, does not sign a spousal waiver, then your spouse is entitled to half or possibly all of funds.

Remember, currently, an inherited IRA must be paid in 10 years, if the beneficiary is not a spouse. Leaving a portion or all of your qualified retirement account to charity can make sense, because the charity does not pay income taxes and will receive more funds than a family member. Other assets which are not taxable can be left to family or friends.

Ask Dr Jen Stop Living in Fear

“I seem to feel so anxious about putting myself out there in one way or another. I’m often afraid of doing things, whether it’s asking a question in a group, talking to new people at a party, going after a promotion or even trying something new.

I feel like my ‘comfort zone’ is so small. I don’t want 2024 to be as limited as 2023. How do I stop living in fear?” - Janine R. When we are blocked from doing something, however big or small, it’s fear that’s in charge.

Fear is generated by negative automatic thoughts, or NATs, as I call them, and they are just as annoying as the winged-variety. Check out these 3 steps to tackle your fear: 1. Start by asking yourself, “What are the selflimiting thoughts that are in my way right now?”

Some examples: What if they don’t like me?

I should just stick with what I know.

I can’t do this.

I’ve never done anything like this before.

I’m not good enough.

What if it doesn’t work out?

I don’t deserve it.

I’m not worth it.

2. Next, ask yourself, “What is it that I am really afraid of here?” Common fears include abandonment, betrayal, rejection, failure, embarrassment and success. Then, there’s being afraid of being afraid. That’s known as anxiety.

Anxiety can work for us or against us. It works for us when it comes in moderation. It works against us when it’s too high (choking) or too low (psyching out). Once you identify the true culprit, commit to overcoming it and make a plan of attack. It’s ok to ask for help in this process.

3. When you experience doubt, ask yourself, “What’s the worst thing that can happen?” or “What do I truly have to lose?” You can’t always guarantee success, but if no one is going to die or lose limb, you can get through it.

Money Matters As we begin the new year, you may be receiving tax statements from your financial services provider — so it’s a good time to consider how your investments are taxed. To understand the tax issues associated with investing, it’s important to understand that investments typically generate either capital gains or ordinary income. So, when do you pay either capital gains taxes or ordinary income taxes on your investments? You pay taxes on capital gains when you sell an investment that’s increased in value since you purchased it.

On the other hand, you pay ordinary income taxes on capital gains resulting from sales of appreciated assets you’ve held for one year or less. You also pay ordinary income taxes when you receive “ordinary” dividends, which are paid if you purchase shares of a company after the cutoff point for shareholders to be credited with a stock dividend. Because your ordinary income tax rate may be much higher than even the top long-term capital gains rate, you may be better off, from a tax standpoint, by focusing on investments that generate long-term capital gains. And the best

strategy for doing just that is to buy quality investments and hold them for the long term. By doing so, you could also reduce the costs and fees associated with frequent buying and selling.

The investment tax situation has another twist, because not all ordinary income is taxable — and if it is, it may not be taxable immediately. The most common example of this is tax-deferred accounts, such as a traditional IRA and 401(k).

When you take money from these accounts, typically at retirement, you’ll pay taxes at your personal tax rate, but for the years and decades before then, your taxes were deferred.

Finally, some investments and investment accounts are tax free. Municipal bonds are free from federal income taxes, and often state income taxes, too. And when you invest in a Roth IRA, your earnings can grow tax free if you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re at least 59½ and you’ve had your account at least five years.

Ultimately, tax considerations shouldn’t be the key driver of your investment choices.

Nonetheless, knowing the tax implications of your investments can help you evaluate which investment choices are best for your needs.

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and when we hear that our minds instantly jump to the typical ways to celebrate - a romantic dinner for two, breakfast in bed, flowers, and chocolate.

These ideas are all amazing and make for a wonderful intimate time with your partner, but this year, let’s switch it up and show that special someone how much love you have for them with other ways to celebrate, rather than the cheesy classics. But whether you’re spending February 14 with your spouse, friends, or family, you can do so many amazing things on Valentine’s Day that can take the holiday from good to great, starting with this list of ideas.

Recreate your favorite or first date. Who doesn’t love a trip down memory lane? This is sure to put a smile on your partner’s face or even give them a good laugh.

Have a photoshoot. Schedule some time to book a professional photoshoot for you and your partner or even the entire family. This is a great way to create long-lasting memories and

Yum Yum Strawberry and Nutella Crepes This recipe for thin and delicate crepes filled with chocolate hazelnut Nutella and fresh strawberries will be the perfect breakfast or dessert for your loved one this Valentine’s Day. The first time making crepes can seem a little intimidating as they can seem to be fussy (in a way that a lot of French pastry can be) or that flipping something so delicate would require great skill. But not at all. These basic French crepes are surprisingly easy to make.

The ingredients are simple and the recipe is straightforward - you can even make it a family event with your kids.

You can make the filling with any ingredients you desire but for this recipe, we’ll focus on strawberries and chocolate spread. Other popular fillings include lemon juice and sugar, berries and cream, bananas and chocolate, or cinnamon apples.

Prep time: 5 mins | Cook time 10 mins | Total time: 15 mins Ingredients (6 servings) 3 eggs 6 tablespoons of flour 1 cup of milk

1 pint of fresh Strawberries (or any berries of your choice) Nutella Steps Wash and slice berries.

In a large bowl mix together milk, flour, and eggs until smooth.

Pour batter onto a lightly greased frying pan. Tilt and rotate the pan in a circular motion until the batter isn’t running anymore.

I find a ¼ cup of batter works best for each crepe in an 8-9 inch frying pan.

Flip over to cook the other side. Remove from pan.

Spread a thin layer of Nutella over one-half of each crepe and top with strawberries. Fold the crepe in half, covering the Nutella and strawberries, and then fold again (into quarters) Garnish with powdered sugar.
