From Me To You...

‘Tis the season. Just not the season you are thinking of. Sure the holidays are upon us, but the season I am talking about is the “let’s tighten our belts and make do” season.

I am sure you are well aware of the supply chain restrictions. Couple that with the massive number of people who have left their jobs and you see a gap in the market that is unprecedented.

That is a word that has been used far too much lately but it is, again, true. Have you noticed the emptying shelves at your local supermarket? The items ‘out of stock’ when you try to order them online? This is all due to that pesky supply chain problem.

I watched a news segment the other day and I was shocked to find that, on top of all the containers sitting at ports waiting to be unloaded and trucked to their destinations, there is another problem. The ports are limiting which color of container can be returned empty to the yard.

So, say you are a truck driver with an empty green container and you wait 8 hours or more in line to return your ‘empty’ and pick up a ‘full’ in exchange. You get to the front of the line and a supervisor says,”Sorry mate, we are only taking red containers today. Back of the line!”

It seems to me that the problem goes further than infrastructure, at this point it is organization that is needed. Either that or someone needs a good kick in the pants. You decide.

So that is the first problem but let’s add another one to the pile. Gas prices are rising, and that is never a good thing. Especially in a state where we have to drive for everything. Growing up I was used to a robust train and bus network. If you didn’t drive and needed to get around, there was a bus or train that could get you where you had to go.

public transportation, I knew that trains were the way to go.

So I booked an around-thecountry train ticket on Amtrak.

I packed a backpack and set out with a friend to see the sights. We started in New York and headed south for the first leg of our trip. Things were ticking along smoothly as we sat sandwiched between commuters and children on school field trips.

Then we got south of D.C. and things ground to a halt. Well not completely, but they may as well have. The trains outside of metro areas travel at approximately 30 miles an hour. And the dinging.

Oh my goodness! That noise is one I still hear in my nightmares. Ding, ding, ding! It went on for hours.

Despite the noise and the lack of speed I managed to see a good amount of the country, in fact there are only 9 states I have yet to visit.

Now if the price of gas ever goes back down, then I may go on a road trip and finally see those last few states.

Next time you escape to nature, remember these few tips to keep our outdoor spaces as beautiful as they can be: 1. Do some research Learn about the places you visit before venturing out, so you have a plan to safely enjoy the outdoors while protecting it. Look up specific trails to follow and view the natural wonders you’ll want to discover. You can also prepare in advance by becoming well-versed in important information about park passes, waste collection, rules and camping permits, plus inclement weather warnings and fire safety tips.

2. Leave no trace Tread lightly and respectfully through nature and make sure to carry out what you carry in. Bring along at least two reusable trash bags and take the initiative to pick up trash or items left behind by others.

3. Do not disturb Respect wildlife habitats. Avoid feeding wild animals, as this can cause health issues for them.

Research about that area’s wildlife to learn whether your visit coincides with a special time like nesting or mating for certain animals. If so, it might be best to reschedule your trip.

4. Stay on trails When you stray even slightly off a trail, your foot traffic can cause significant damage. This can create a domino effect - other visitors behind you will likely see the squashed flora and follow suit, unfortunately causing even more harm to the habitat by widening the newly created “trail.”

5. Get involved Community organizations across the U.S. have faced funding and volunteer participation challenges due to the ongoing pandemic. It’s more important than ever to help local nonprofit organizations make a difference.

Unlimited?

How much data do you really need on your monthly cellular plan? To hear most wireless companies tell it, the answer is simple: go unlimited! Mobile data usage has been on the rise over the past decade, even before the pandemic forced us to stare at our phones more than usual. Audio streaming, online gaming and especially HD/4K video streaming have steadily increased; and as apps get more complex, they require more data to run effectively. But are your individual data needs truly “unlimited”? Recent data would seem to suggest otherwise.

Even with the quarantines and shutdowns of Covid-19 forcing us to rely more heavily on our mobile devices than ever, the average smartphone user consumed about 7 gigabytes (GB) of cellular data in 2020. And whether your personal mobile data usage reaches this 7GB average depends entirely on your needs and

lifestyle. Streaming a full HD game of your favorite sports team will require around 4GB of data. A 10-minute HD video chat uses almost 0.5GB. On-the-spot social media updates, sporting event streaming and remote videoconferencing can quickly elevate a data diet.

But with the rapidly growing availability of WiFi, which lets you access a wireless Internet connection without consuming any data from your cellular plan, it’s possible for a user to stay connected all day long - and not use a bit of cellular data.

In addition, some carriers promising “unlimited data” will actually limit your high-speed data to just a couple of gigabytes per month. Once you use up that allotment, you’ll have unlimited access, but at much slower speeds. This makes it more difficult to load pages quickly, or to stream video, even though you’re paying a premium for “unlimited” access.

While the big carriers keep coming up with creative new ways to encourage you to go “unlimited,” real deals can be found that provide more affordable options while delivering data that fits your lifestyle.

Cellular competition is fierce, so make sure you’re getting what’s best for the way you really use your data. Check your current bill to find out how much you’re actually using, then shop around. One size never fits all, so with a bit of smart research, you’ll find all the data you really need, and for less.

The Holidays & Mental Health The holidays can be full of high expectations. In many cases, we put them on ourselves. Whether it’s meal preparation, picking the right gift or just over thinking the details, it’s easy to get caught up in the events of the season.

In order to manage stress and keep feelings of anxiety and depression at bay, consider these practical tips: • Don’t overspend. Plan ahead and set a budget for your holiday gift giving.

• Don’t over think it. Try to manage your expectations of people who have a negative effect on you. Limit your time with them.

• Set realistic goals. Don’t try to get everything done in one day. Make a list and try to check off two to three items every day.

• Tuck in early. A good night’s sleep is incredibly important to your physical and mental health. In fact, it’s just as important as eating healthy and exercising.

• Don’t overindulge. Overindulging can lead to feelings of guilt or shame, deflating your selfesteem. Enjoy your holiday season by practicing moderation.

• Practice Self Care and Stay active. When you plan your holiday schedule, allow time for yourself and be active.

• Ask for help. Ask friends and family members to check in on you from time to time. If you feel the need for more formal support, talking with a

mental health professional can help.

• Make a mental health crisis plan. Be sure to continue your therapy sessions. And if you’re taking prescription medications, beware of the side effects of mixing your medications with alcohol.

And finally, if you’re concerned about getting together with family and friends for the holidays because of the pandemic, do the following: • Talk about it early.

• Accept that some people you normally celebrate with may choose to opt out of the holiday get together.

• Get tested. COVID-19 testing is readily available.

• Celebrate outside.

Yum Yum Peppermint Bark Mini Cupcakes For a party, family get-together or weekday dessert, enjoy the iconic holiday flavor combo chocolate and peppermint.

Ingredients 1/3 cup almond flour 2 tablespoons coconut flour 1 scoop Quest Chocolate Milkshake Protein Powder 2 tablespoons zero calorie sweetener 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 teaspoon baking powder Pinch salt 1 Peppermint Bark Quest Bar, chopped 1/2 cup almond milk 1 egg 1 egg white 1 tablespoon melted butter Frosting 1 cup low fat ricotta cheese 2 tablespoons powdered zero calorie sweetener

1 scoop chocolate milkshake protein powder 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 1-2 tablespoons almond milk Instructions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and prepare two cupcake tins with 14 mini liners.

In bowl, stir together almond flour, coconut flour, protein powder, sweetener, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt, then set aside.

In microwave safe bowl, add chopped bar and almond milk and cook on high for 1 minute. Stir until smooth.

Let cool 5 minutes before whisking in eggs and melted butter.

Add dry ingredients to wet and stir until batter forms.

Distribute batter between liners and bake cupcakes 12-14 minutes. Let cool.

For frosting, use handheld mixer to beat ricotta, powdered sweetener, protein and cocoa powder until smooth.

Add almond milk 1 tablespoon at a time for smoother consistency.

Transfer frosting to piping bag and add dollop of frosting onto each cupcake and smooth with knife. Top with sprinkles if desired. Makes 14 mini cupcakes.

Buyer Beware Today’s online marketplaces - where anyone can buy or sell new items - are numerous, offering a wide variety of products. But buyers should be aware there are risks involved when buying from these types of marketplaces including ending up with stolen or counterfeit merchandise, receiving an item that’s different from what you ordered, or never receiving it at all. Unscrupulous sellers can show up on any of the many legitimate marketplaces. Because these sellers often hide behind fake accounts with fake names, and they aren’t required to provide or verify their contact information, it’s extremely difficult for law enforcement to catch them. Being aware of potential red flags can help you avoid problems.

For example, here are signs that may mean you could be buying a stolen or counterfeit item:

* It seems too good to be true - such as a new, brand-name item on sale for a drastically lower price. * The product is described as “brand new,” “new in box” or “new with tags.” * Large quantities of the same item/brand are available at the same time. * The seller indicates they can “get other products upon request.” * There are signs of box tampering or removal of security devices when you receive the item.
