From Me To You... Lately I have been feeling like a swan. No, not graceful or suddenly beautiful. I feel like I am maintaining poise and remaining calm on the surface, whilst under the waterline I am peddling furiously, trying to keep up. Anyone else? The world is not the place it was a mere six months ago, heck it was different a mere two weeks ago. The things I worried about then seem almost laughable now. Except they are still the things I worry about, there is just a new layer of larger issues placed on top of everything else. Perhaps I am not a swan but a camel, balancing straws one after another, wondering which one will break me? And yet, they don’t. Break me. I can’t let them. I have to keep balancing, keep peddling away under the water. Because if I stop what happens to the people who rely on me? I will not let them be dragged down. I know I am not alone in this place — many others are feeling this way. You can tell when you talk to them. A flicker in their gaze, or an unexpected pause in a conversation that displays a slight distance midsentence. That moment when they remember their problems looming overhead.

Spanish Flu, wars, famines, and plagues, to name a few.) We will look back at this period one day and marvel at what we overcame, what we achieved and what we survived. Our children and our children’s children will read about it in history and be relieved that it didn’t happen to them. I do that when I read about tragedies. Phew, I am sure glad that didn’t happen to me! Well this time it did and it is. Is this a test from God? Are we being measured against an almighty yardstick? I hope not. I am not confident in my ability to pass that test. But I can tell you what I am confident in. Our perseverance, our will to survive and thrive. We, as a human race, always come through in the end. We are scrappy. I don’t know what is coming next - and believe me there will be another challenge next week. I do know we can handle it. Together.

Furry Friends In uncertain times, there is one source of comfort we can all agree upon, and it is the unconditional love provided by our beloved four-legged friends. Pets are family and are there for us when we need it most. And when tragedy strikes a family member, whether through a natural disaster, domestic abuse, a health problem or job loss, we do everything we can to help. Bringing animals out of crisis and into care and strengthening the bond between humans and animals is at the heart of everything RedRover does. In the current time of economic and social uncertainty, there are a variety of programs that can help people and pets who are struggling, including: Urgent veterinary care grants The RedRover Relief program offers financial assistance and resources to pet owners struggling with economic hardship when pets are facing life-threatening emergencies. These grants are intended to fill a small gap in

funding that is keeping an animal from receiving urgent veterinary care. In addition to financial support, case managers are there to provide emotional support and guidance throughout the application process. COVID boarding grants The new “Emergency Boarding grant program helps animals who need temporary boarding while their owners are ill due to the COVID-19 virus. This grant will cover the cost of up to two (2) weeks of boarding while a pet owner is hospitalized, or if the pet owner is recovering at home and unable to care for their pet or place him or her with a friend or neighbor. Resources Beyond providing grants and support, RedRover has also assembled a list of COVID-19 emergency resources for pets and people. Visit www.RedRover.org With so many struggling right now, these resources will help keep your family safe during the pandemic, and beyond.

Minimize Waste

Spending more time in the kitchen means learning the importance of not only keeping food fresh for weeks at a time, but also minimizing waste for fewer trips to the grocery store. Whether aiming to reduce waste, save money or just find new ways get creative in the kitchen, these five tips will help you make the most out of your ingredients while saving all kinds of dough.

1. Take inventory and get organized When it comes to refrigerator and pantry organization, being able to see your items is half the battle. Use clear, stackable containers to repack loose items or tough-to-store packages, such as oatmeal, condiment packets, nuts or grains. When it comes to the refrigerator, use the first in, first out method as well as organizational features like split or adjustable shelving to your advantage. 2. Shop for a variety To avoid overstocking, start by making a list. In addition to fresh fruit, vegetables and other necessities, add versatile non-perishables,

proteins and starches. Fermented and pickled foods boost your immune system, while also lasting months and adding a flavorful punch to dishes. Beans, seeds, alternative milks and oats, plus a range of spices can also help add variety to your meals. 3. Use the “stem to peel method One way to maximize produce is to repurpose commonly discarded parts. Peels can be left on almost all organic veggies for added flavor, texture and a boost of fiber. Citrus peels can be used in anything from baked goods to cocktails for added acidity and spice. Stems and veggie ends can be boiled down into a stock for use in other recipes. 4. Be creative with what you have Now is the perfect time to experiment with new recipes, but maximizing ingredients means starting with what you have. Prioritize items that are going to spoil soon and build a recipe from there. Instead of running to the store for an ingredient, search your inventory for replacements. For example, if you are baking and run out of butter, replace it with coconut oil or apple sauce. Also, lemon juice, lime juice, vinegar and white wine are interchangeable in recipes. 5. Get friendly with your freezer When freezing meat, which will last three to four months in the freezer, wrap portions in plastic before placing in a resealable bag. Blanching vegetables before freezing helps maintain color and flavor. Frozen veggies, berries and cooked grains keep for two to three months in the freezer, while soup and bread will last three to six months. Just be sure to label all items with the date and prioritize the first in, first out rule. From the pantry to the refrigerator and freezer, these tips will help you maximize all your ingredients for less food wasted while also getting more creative and organized in the kitchen than ever.

The Perfect Martini Though some may think of the martini as a drink that’s difficult to master on your own due to the many variations and styles, you need not travel to your local bar to satisfy your desire for a cool, crisp martini. In reality, the classic cocktail is easy to make and just as effortless to customize to your taste preferences and personal palate. The classic 50/50 Martini is actually quite simple to create. The Perfect Martini has only three ingredients: gin, dry vermouth and orange bitters. The base is the star of the cocktail and focal point for flavor, so it is important to be selective. Craft the perfect or 50/50 Martini in four simple steps: * Add 1.50 ounces of gin, 1.50 ounces of dry vermouth and two dashes of orange bitters into a mixing glass. * Add ice and stir the mixture. * Strain the cocktail into a chilled glass, whether a martini, coupe or Nick & Nora. * Garnish the cocktail with a lemon peel. For added flavor and scent, try “expressing” the lemon peel above the cocktail, which is simply

twisting the peel above the glass, so the oils are released and dusts the rim.

Classic, dry, wet, dirty, with a twist, shaken or stirred - there are hundreds of martini variations. Creative mixologists can play with a range of flavors to customize their cocktails, adjusting the ratio of gin to other key ingredients and experimenting with infusions, garnishes and twists. Recipes to get started * Breakfast Martini: Combine 2 ounces of Gin with .75 ounce of Cointreau, .75 ounce of fresh lemon juice and 2 spoonfuls of peach marmalade or jam in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake. Fine strain the mixture into a chilled glass and serve for a delightfully sweet and fruity twist on the standard classic. * The Heirloom: Add 1.5 ounces of Gin, .5 ounce dry vermouth, 1 ounce of tomato water (the juice of a blended ripe tomato strained through cheesecloth) and a pinch of sea salt into a mixing glass. Add ice and stir. Strain into a chilled glass and garnish with a lemon peel for a savory treat for morning, afternoon or night.

Business 411 When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.” There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown. • The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. • Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times. • Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession.

•

When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current and future sales. An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.” An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits. Another strategy used by marketers is using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides. Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/ or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share. Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.” -----------------------------We at Estrella Publishing are open for business and here working overtime to support our clients and potential future clients with their marketing strategy. As people spend more time at home, creating a personal outdoor sanctuary is more important than ever before. Here are some simple, affordable ideas for transforming any space into an outdoor oasis:

Step 1: Pull up a chair A place to sit and relax is essential so you can fully enjoy your outdoor space. This doesn’t mean you have to order a whole new set of patio furniture though. Just one or two chairs along with a table for your favorite beverage can be an inviting start. You could even update a worn outdoor chair with a fresh coat of outdoor paint and new cushions and you’ll get a brand new look for less. Add a few outdoor accent pillows for a splash of personality and to make the space reflect the same level of comfort found indoors.

Step 2: Define the space Adding a rug is a great way to give the space a more intimate feel, just make sure it’s made for outdoor use specifically to stand up to the elements. You can also create a sense of enclosure with potted plants lined in the corners or along the sides to create the visual illusion of a wall. Try your hand at container gardening and you’ll enhance your space and provide fresh vegetables and herbs for home cooking. Step 3: Add decorative accents To make an outdoor space feel like your own, add a few thoughtful decorations. Outdoor mirrors are an upscale addition to your outdoor areas. Decor such as signs, statues and mosaics can add style to any space. To add elements of relaxation, consider a rock garden, fountain or wind chimes, which will help you escape stress while stimulating the senses. Step 4: Enjoy daily Create a routine to enjoy your outdoor space daily. Schedule a morning meditation, afternoon escape or evening happy hour. Raise a glass of your favorite Flat Top Hills wine and toast to living life to the fullest, even from the comfort of your backyard. Whether it’s a crisp sauvignon blanc, supple ros√©, lush chardonnay, mouthwatering red blend or rich cabernet sauvignon, it’s the perfect way to enjoy your outdoor oasis. There’s no better time than the present to begin your backyard transformation.

The Bug Guy The heat wave that closed out May carried over into June and has us thinking about what our monsoon season will be like this summer as it continues to get warmer in July. What about our monsoon season you may ask? It appears that the average start date for our monsoon season is July 6th, however the earliest start on record was June 16, 1925. While July is generally the start of our monsoon season, without a visible El Nino effect to bring in the high-level moisture it looks like we may be in for a hotter, dryer summer with an increased possibility of dust storms. This weather pattern could lead to a record number of heat advisory days and a significantly higher wildfire risk. As I write this the Tonto fire is currently the largest brush fire burning in the country and summer has only just begun. Please consider all safety and fire warnings as we celebrate our country’s independence this month. What does monsoon season and the weather have to do with bugs you ask? Well, with higher temperatures and lower rainfall/humidity I

believe we will see a reduction in visible termite activity and a big increase in scorpions, spiders, crickets, and all the other bugs we have here! While termite visibility is reduced, they will still be active and have a shorter swarming season When we have a strong monsoon season, we typically see a reduction in crawling bugs and an increase in flying bugs, this is because of the low-level flooding that even a mild storm can cause. Think about this from a bug’s point of view! Imagine if you were a tiny insect and a flash flood comes along and suddenly you are swimming for your life. This is the life of a bug during monsoon season! Monsoon storms can reduce the insect populations by up to 40%. This sounds awesome, until you realize that with the rain comes new growth and a better environment for insects to reproduce and thrive. So, with reduced potential for rainfall, we will likely see more insects that thrive on the ground. However, we need to continue to be prepared and do our part when it does rain. Be sure to reduce opportunities for standing water after the rains and keep your weeds in check to minimize insect habitats during this season. Estrella Mountain Pest Control, Larry Cash

Money Matters If you have young children, you may want to save for their higher education, whether that be college or trade school. At the same time, though, you’re moving ever closer to retirement. Can you save for your kids’ education and a comfortable retirement for yourself at the same time? It is indeed possible, although you may need to prioritize somewhat. Specifically, you may not want to put off saving for retirement in favor of education. But by viewing these goals together and investing as early as possible in each of them, you can take advantage of one of your biggest assets – time.

the 529 plan. Your earnings grow taxdeferred and withdrawals are free from federal tax, provided the money is used for qualified higher education expenses. Furthermore, your 529 plan contributions may earn a state tax deduction or credit if you participate in your own state’s plan. You can set up recurring contributions from a bank account to a 529 plan. And you don’t have to fund your 529 plan on your own. Instead of gifts for birthdays, holidays, graduations and other occasions, why not ask friends and relatives to contribute to the 529 plan you’ve set up for your child? They’re all eligible to participate – and their contributions may earn them tax benefits if they live in your state and you’ve invested in your own state’s plans. A financial advisor can help you plan for more than one goal, understand the benefits and tradeoffs of your decisions, and make the process of saving for those goals easier. So, get the help you need to stay on track – or rather, two tracks – toward the important objectives of education and retirement.

Of course, you’ll still have to budget your resources. You want to invest as much as you can, but not so much that your monthly cash flow is crimped. Consequently, you may have to consider retiring later, contributing less to your child’s education, or a combination of the two. Positive Parenting Four Questions Not to Ask Your Child About Returning to School

Original article by Dr. Kyle Pruett, Contributing Writer & G oddard School Educational Advisory Board Member While the return to “life as we knew it” can make parents welcome sending their children back to school, it may not be a smooth transition for some. A common temptation is to start testing our children about school readiness topics. Examples of some things a four-year-old might say to some seemingly innocent questions include, “I don’t know if I want to see my friends yet.” or “I liked being at home with you every day.” Here are four questions you may want to approach differently: 1. Are you excited about going back to school? Most preschoolers will feel a mix of emotions: excitement, uncertainty, curiosity, even fear, and not all at the same time, so it’s hard for them to answer directly. Instead, let them overhear you

51 Years

talking to others about going back to school and some of your mixed feelings. This will let them know this is an okay topic and may encourage them to ask their questions about going back. Listen carefully, and deal with where your children are about going back, not just where you are. 2. Do you want to practice your letters and numbers to get ready for school? This might seem practical to parents, but may cause a preschooler to think they are a little behind. Instead, before your child heads back, start saying things like, “Can you find the letter A in the signs along the road?” Playing small games may help him or her get back in the swing of things without feeling like a chore. 3. Anything special you want to do before school begins again? Of course, we want to please our kids, but this question may carry the idea that something serious is about to happen, and they’d better get in their goodbyes. Instead, use the last weekend for family time that is more laid back. Talk about how much these times mean to you as a mom, dad or family and how you look forward to more of them. 4. When you do want to start getting ready to go to bed earlier to get ready for school mornings? This question may seem like you are trying to partner up with them on this issue, but it’s better to get it started when you think they should, since it will probably be a slow process. Senior Scams Crises and upheaval have a way of bringing out the best - and, sometimes the worst - in society. That’s why in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to protect the online information of senior and vulnerable friends and loved ones.

“Our elderly population are the wisest and most treasured members of our communities,” says DJ Johnson, Charles Schwab’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Risk Management. “However, they’re at a higher level of risk, not only due to possible physical complications with the virus, but also by being targeted by online scammers who have increased their efforts to defraud this susceptible group.” Scammers have deployed several methods intended to trick individuals into sending money, disclosing personal information or downloading malicious software. While fraud can come in many forms, here are a few specific schemes that can be more targeted at the senior population: Emergency scams: Schemers misrepresent themselves as a family member requesting money for care, or requesting supplies to “stay afloat.” Social Security: Scammers pose as someone from the Social Security Administration requesting payment or personal information to prevent

benefits from being suspended or reduced. Investment scams: Fraudsters promote investments in companies that claim to prevent, detect or provide a cure for COVID-19. People are turning to the internet for up-to-date information about COVID-19 and to purchase goods that either cannot be found in stores or as an alternative to shopping in person. To take advantage of this, fraudsters set up websites to offer goods or services, such as protective gear, cleaning products, vaccines, testing kits and home delivery services. They then use these sites to collect payment and personal information with no intention of delivering the goods and services. So now, more than ever, it’s important to stay informed in order to detect signs of fraud. Tips: * Visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), or coronavirus.gov, or contact your physician for information regarding COVID-19. * Avoid visiting pages offering cures or vaccines. * Go directly to websites by entering a trusted URL address into your browser. * Avoid using phone numbers for companies found through general web searches. * Read site reviews regarding product delivery and purchases. The reviews may indicate if a site is selling counterfeit products. Non-Stress Estate Planning

Estate planning does not need to be complex or confusing. You deserve to have your questions answered when they arise. On-line services and computer forms simply do not address the variety of issues that might arise as we do in our office. The court process of probate can be avoided with a revocable trust for some, but others can utilize a beneficiary deed with more ease. Privacy laws can prevent you from being assisted by your spouse, trusted friend or family member. Powers of attorney give the right person the legal authority to help you. We make sure you have the correct power of attorney you need, including for finances, medical health care or mental health care. Inheritances for minors, whether children or grandchildren, can be bogged down by a court conservatorship when a trust is not

The trusts we prepare address the needs of minors to avoid court conservatorship and if necessary provide incentives for education and employment.
