Amongst other things, I believe in science.

Perhaps because I can see the proof in front of my own eyes. You pose a hypothesis, test it and see if you are right or wrong. See? Proof. I also believe in things I can‘t prove, like the innate goodness of people. I just know everyone has the ability to be good - whether they show it or not.

A disease is a harder one to prove to the everyday man. I can see why there are many people who still do not believe in the pandemic that is sweeping our world into tiny shards.

Unless someone you know has Covid-19 then who is to say it is real? Well that goes back to belief. Do you believe the scientists? Do you believe the CDC? Do you believe your neighbor who swears by Windex as a cure for everything? (Throwback reference to My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Great movie, you should watch it if you haven’t seen it already.) FYI I do not recommend using Windex for anything other than sparkling windows.

Peru has determined that to keep everyone safe they will allow men to go out on the streets on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and women can go out on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Some countries are limiting groups to less than 10 or 50 or 100 people. How does that work? The virus only comes near if there are 101 people but knows that 99 would be a cue to stay away?

Either way it has been proven that one thing does help. Wearing masks slows the spread of Covid-19 whether you are in groups of 10, 100, or 1000, if you are male or female, and it doesn’t matter which day of the week it is.

I know there are people who believe that wearing a mask is an infringement of their rights, and I hear them. I wonder though. Is it an infringement of rights to request you wear shoes and a shirt in an establishment? The vast majority of people manage to adhere to that request without a murmur. Why is it so much harder to cover your nose and mouth? “I can’t breathe through a mask!” Ah. I know it is not always comfortable and especially in Arizona it can get hot. But. It does not stop you from getting oxygen. It does not increase your intake of Carbon Monoxide. How do I know? Science. I have watched doctors place an oximeter on their finger and measure the oxygen in their blood while wearing all kinds of masks. It does not make a difference.

So I have a request for you. Even if you do not want to wear a mask in public, or you don’t believe it will help, please prove to me that my belief in your inherent goodness will prevail and wear one anyway. Thank you.

Hello Vistancia!

Have you ever experienced a horrible sunburn?

In college I went tubing down the Salt River and forgot to put sunscreen on a little patch right above my bathing suit on my chest. It burned so badly, it blistered. With an awful sense of humor I told my friends who saw it that I had gotten it in my chemistry lab course!

In Galatians 5:16-21 Paul refers to these things as “Works of the Flesh.” Call them what you will, if we are not careful we may be guilty of releasing them into the world to do damage to others even if we do not intend to!

There is hope, however, in those things that bring us life. Retirement Plans As the ongoing coronavirus pandemic continues to present health and economic challenges, it is difficult to focus on anything other than the present. It’s important, though, not to lose sight of the years ahead and to take steps that can put you in a better position when we emerge on the other side. grow even faster by contributing enough to take full advantage of any matching contributions your employer offers. 3. Understand how your retirement savings translates into income.

Take the time during your working years to understand how much income you might receive in retirement based on your retirement savings.

The U.S. Department of Labor offers a simple retirement income projection tool that can help you get started. If you see that projections are falling short of where you think you might need them to be, consider filling the gap by increasing the amount you are saving. Additionally, if you are over the age of 50, you can make catchup contributions to your 401(k) or individual retirement account.

Having a predictable income can make a big difference and fortunately relief may be in sight. While many employers don’t yet offer guaranteed retirement income options in their 401(k) plans, a new law passed at the end of 2019 could change this. That’s good news, considering that 95% of workers and retirees say it’s important for retirees to have a source of guaranteed retirement income they cannot outlive.

Non-Stress Revocable Trusts A trust can remove stress and ease the administration of your estate. Without a trust, a court probate could be needed, and would require all heirs to be notified –even heirs you may be omitting from your estate plan.

Our Town

I am very excited to share with you that Paloma Community Park will be opening in the fall!

As you know, we have been working on the development of this community amenity for several years. In 2017, you helped name this park in a citywide contest. “Paloma” is Spanish for “dove,” this park is named for the beautiful, wing-like shape created by the mountains surrounding it. I want to thank the residents for their support and patience. I know you are as eager as I am to enjoy this wonderful amenity.

Paloma Park includes amenities for the whole family to enjoy, including trailheads, a dog park, a fishing pond, splash pads, playgrounds, ramadas, soccer fields, pickleball courts and baseball fields. This will also be a communitygathering place for special events. Your family will be able to host reunions and birthdays under the ramadas, and there will also be an event stage and lawn for larger gatherings and shows.

Imagine concerts under the sky, and a splash pad and courts for the kids to enjoy. Lighted courts and ball fields mean we can enjoy pickleball, baseball and soccer for day and evening games.

Instead of having to drive to multiple places for family activities, this park will provide something for every member of the family, both two legged and four legged.

Phase two of the Paloma Community Park amenity planning will begin in 2021. An intentional public process will begin with a design team and conceptual renderings for possible future amenities and improvements.

City staff will use several citizen feedback methods both online and at virtual public meetings. While the park master plan has a high level of special uses identified across the city, the input from residents and stakeholder groups will ultimately assist in guiding the prioritization of the final park and amenity designs the phase two budget authorizations.

We are hopeful to have the park open in late September early October,but stay tuned for information about the official opening date – you will not want to miss it! Our park will be the envy of the Northwest Valley. Paloma Park is ready to take flight!

When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.”

There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown.

• The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend.

• Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times.

• Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, which can provide greater short-term sales

When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current – and possibly future – sales.

An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.”

An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits.

Another strategy used by marketers is changing the ad message and using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. Some advertisers will offer interest-free loans, coupons or special promotions to boost sales and market share. For some advertisers that don’t give cost incentives, they can change the ad message to being expensive but worth it. Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides. Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share.

Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.”
