From Me To You... I am no longer allowed to throw balls in the house. Apparently my family is tired of dodging random missiles, picking up broken items and occasionally getting winged themselves. In fact as soon as I reach for a dog toy people duck for cover. I find it a little insulting to be honest. My aim is not that bad, most of the damage is caused by rebounds and people walking into the line of fire. That is the line I am going with anyway.
It is amazing how many things I aim for in life and get a near miss, but it is not about the ones you miss. As I try to instill in my children, you learn more from failing than success. Sure success is more fun, but failing builds resilience, tenacity and drive. Learning that lesson young is preferable as it can be a hard lesson to learn as an adult. One of our children is good at math. I mean he just gets it. When I hear a problem that starts with “A train leaves the station at 10am...” my head starts to throb and the world fades to black.
He always knows the answer, always did. Then he went to high school and hit a wall. He stopped loving math and took a couple of years to come back to it. But he did, and pretty spectacularly at that, completing his college math before even starting his finance degree. He fell, figured out that if you fail at something you learn, pick yourself up and do it differently next time - and he learned it when he was young. That is a skill which makes him able to roll with the punches in his adult life. Many people never learn that lesson, repeating their mistakes over and over again. “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” ~ Albert Einstein We see it all the time, in parenting, business, even politics, (don’t worry I am not going there...) and it rarely pays off for anyone. We all see the pizza joint that goes out of business only to be replaced by yet another pizza joint. There has to be a reason it is not successful in that location! As for my pitching skills, I am not giving up just yet. Practice makes perfect is another phrase I am hanging on to - perhaps I should just take it outside for a while.

Massing of the Colors An Open Letter to All Veterans and Their Families
Sunday, September 8, the 54th annual Massing of the Colors and Service of Remembrance will be held at the B.P.O.E. Phoenix Elks Club 335, 14424 N 32nd Street 85302. It is a moving and stirring event and is sponsored by The Military Order of The World Wars, a veteran’s organization consisting of Commissioned Officers who served on active duty in any of the Uniformed Services. Over 23 organizations participate in this annual event together with the Arizona Army National Guard, clergy and dignitaries. Perhaps this will remind us that patriotism begins with human allegiance as described by Norman Cousins, Political Journalist, – (1915-1990). Sometimes we feel as though we, as a nation, are no longer interested in the sentiment of sacrifice and dedication. Heinrich Heine, Journalist, Essayist – (1797-1856), in describing a veteran wrote, “I doubt that I deserve the laurel wreath, for poetry has always been merely an instrument with me, a sort of divine plaything. If you would honor me, lay a sword rather than a wreath upon my coffin, for I was, above all else, a soldier in the war for the liberation of mankind.”

Reading these words should give us pause to think about the bravery and sacrifices the men and women of our Armed Forces make every day. We read tales of their courage on distant shores trying to fulfill their commitment to their country. There is the ever-present danger of suicide bombers and terrorists attempting to destroy the very fabric of human existence. The numbers of dead keep increasing with each passing day. There was a time, early in our struggles to eradicate the menace to our society and that of the free world, when the count of the dead and the wounded were repeated on a daily basis. There have been over 5,000 members of our Armed Forces who have died between Iraq and Afghanistan and over 30,000 of them wounded some seriously. The war is no longer on the front pages. The men and women in the front lines are no longer headlines. And we sit here, in the comfort of our homes, and neglect to appreciate the duty and honor with which they serve. It is a dramatic reminder that we have become so complacent. How can we memorialize the innocent people murdered daily and not pay honor to the valiant efforts of our fighting men and women? Where is the patriotism of generations past? They were times when gold or blue stars would appear in the windows of families who had relatives fighting on distant shores; a time when thousands would pour onto the streets watching our troops parade and cheering them on; a time when songs of valor and encouragement were heard throughout the land and beyond – “Over there….” We were so proud of our country and our flag.

Now we are faced with questions regarding the displaying of our flag or the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, or even the singing of the Star Spangled Banner, the anthem of our heritage and the significance of our purpose. Our young go into battle to protect or lives and we cannot even signify this heroism by being proud of who we are.

We should be asking God to tenderly kiss the souls of each and every man and woman wearing the uniform of this great country because they understand duty, honor and country, as He leads them to their eternal reward. We should be asking God to watch over our brave defenders as they continue to march into harm’s way. Above all, we should pray that God’s open arms would embrace the tortured bodies of our wounded and dying, and bring comfort to their families. This is remembrance. These are fitting tributes. This is what America was and should still be. This is how we acknowledge our debt. These are the reasons we should all participate in the Massing of the Colors. True, there are several opportunities on our calendar, but all of them are important. All deserve our attention and participation. As a veteran, I urge all to pay homage to the past and tribute to the present. We, who serve and have served, understand the need to celebrate, commemorate, and continually remember. Purple Leash An estimated 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men will experience some form of domestic abuse in their lifetime. Escaping abusive situations and starting over in a new and safe environment is an overwhelming experience for victims, especially when pets are involved. An added challenge is that very few domestic violence shelters in the U.S. currently accept and house pets. This leaves abuse victims with a difficult decision - flee to safety but leave their pet behind or stay with their abuser? Almost half of domestic violence victims choose to stay in an abusive situation out of fear of what might happen to their pet. As those who live with pets can attest, pets do so much for their humans - they provide unconditional love and comfort, they demonstrate loyalty and devotion, and they teach people about care and compassion. In essence, pets and people are better together.

That’s why Purina has partnered with RedRover, a national nonprofit organization that helps people and animals in crisis situations, to create the Purple Leash Project. The Purple Leash Project not only raises awareness about this issue, but the program also helps provide funding and resources necessary to help more domestic violence shelters become safe, healing spaces for pets and people. As part of the initiative, Purina is committing more than $500,000 to establish Purple Leash Project grants, which are awarded to shelters across the country to fund renovations to make their shelter spaces pet-friendly. The Purple Leash Project aims to increase the number of pet-friendly domestic abuse shelters across the U.S. to ensure there are more resources available for survivors with pets in every state. If you or someone you know or love is a victim of domestic abuse, call or visit the Domestic Violence Hotline 24/7 for support and resources: 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) & safeplaceforpets.org.

Designating IRAs and 401Ks Wills and Trusts generally will not govern the distribution of your IRA’s or 401k’s. The designated beneficiary form directs who will get the benefits of a qualified retirement plan. If your “Estate” is listed as the designated beneficiary or if there is no designated beneficiary, probate will be needed and the IRA will have to be paid in a lump sum, not over time as an inherited IRA.
valid under state law, become irrevocable upon the death of the participant and the beneficiaries have to be identifiable from the trust agreement. If you are married, then normally your spouse will be the initial beneficiary. In order for a children or a trust to be listed as the primary beneficiary, federal law requires spousal consent in regard to 401K or other ERISA qualified retirement accounts. Federal law does not require spousal consent for IRAs, but Arizona’s community property laws create a presumption that the spouse is entitled to one-half of the IRA.
The benefits of a qualified retirement plan can be distributed through a revocable Trust, over time, as long as certain precautions are taken. First, the Trust must be listed as the beneficiary, the trust agreement. Then, the revocable Trust must be

Protect Your Devices Resourceful thieves and cyber criminals continue to find new ways to hack U.S. consumers’ sensitive personal information. Dumpster diving, stolen or lost wallets and mail fraud should still be concerns, but the digital age of tablets, smartphones, PCs and Wi-Fi networks leaves people even more vulnerable than ever.
Think about it: Have you ever stored credit card information on your phone for added convenience to make payments in a checkout lane? Do you ever store passwords in apps to transfer funds between accounts? And what’s to keep hackers from accessing a wireless network you check your email on while you’re grabbing a quick cup of coffee? “More than 15.4 million people a year will experience identity theft, with an average loss of more than $1,000,” said Jane Li, Mercury Insurance’s director of product management. Keeping aware of the latest schemes and ensuring members of your household, friends and others you care about have the right tools helps stop criminals in their tracks. Following are five do’s and don’ts to help protect your connected devices, as well as your electronic identity, from hackers.
their jobs easier. Turn off Wi-Fi access on your devices unless it’s a password-protected network you trust. * Do monitor your children’s device usage. It’s a good idea to limit use of computers, tablets and phones to public areas within the home like the living room or kitchen. This makes it easier for parents to keep an eye on who their kids are communicating with, especially on social media or gaming sites, to help prevent the sharing of sensitive information like full names, addresses or other things that can be used for identity theft or other potentially dangerous activities. * Do install recommended updates. Smartphone, computer, tablet and smart TV manufacturers, among other providers of connected devices, offer periodic software updates to protect against potential security breaches. Chances are, if an update is recommended, hackers have already discovered a way to access your personal property and information, so keep your software up-to-date. “It can be daunting to try to regain your financial footing if a criminal takes advantage of you,” said Li. “Insurance exists to help protect consumers from unexpected events and, in this case, it’s better to be safe than sorry.”
* Do power down your devices. This disables the internet connection, cutting off access to any personal information stored on your computer, tablet or phone. Unattended machines, especially if you’re asleep or you leave them at home while on vacation, are easy targets for hackers. * Don’t connect to unsecured wireless networks. Information accessed on an open network, including email passwords and sensitive bank information, is fair game for hackers. Don’t make Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

Home Fix Ups With cooler days and temperate weather around the corner, fall is a good time to get outdoors and tackle some larger home projects, as well as prep your home for winter. “Cold weather can wreak havoc on your house, leaving you with a long list of repairs,” said Cathy McHugh, director, brand management at DAP. “It’s important to take preventative action now so you can enjoy the coming weather change, rather than making costly repairs later.” Refresh around windows and doors Temperature fluctuations and weather extremes can cause cracks and crumbling in sealants around windows and doors. The resulting gaps allow air to creep inside, putting your energy bills on overdrive. In addition, if current sealant has any dirt build-up, the hot weather of summer can foster mold and mildew. Protect your home and give your windows and doors a refresh and waterproof seal that stands up to the elements by applying a new exterior sealant.
Repair imperfections and surface damage It’s important to take a walk around your property and inspect your home and outdoor living areas for surface damage issues. Common damage includes cracks in sidewalks and driveways, as well as chips in siding. Address problem areas like these with an exterior filler, which can fill in exposed, vulnerable areas and prevent further damage. Inspect your roof Start by making a simple visual inspection of your roof. Before hauling out the ladder, use binoculars or zoom in with a smartphone camera to spot obvious damage. If your roof has a relatively flat surface and you feel comfortable on a ladder, then go up for a closer look. Shingles that are cracked, buckled, loose or are missing granules need to be replaced. Prepare your furnace for fall Now is the time to prepare your furnace for fall. Change the filter, clean vents and remove any dirt or dust that has settled on the unit and connections. If you suspect problems, schedule a professional to check it out now - rather than wait until temperatures drop. For more information to help tackle your to-do list, visit DAP.com

Peace On Earth “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” (Romans 12:18)
The World Health Organization defines violence as “the intentional use of physical force of power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community which either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, physical harm, maldevelopment, or deprivation.” ‘Violence’ does not pull the trigger, set the bomb or abuse someone. People are behaving in violent ways, including verbal abuse on social media, and we need to figure out why. Psychologists say anger management used to begin with teens and up. Now they are treating young children and toddlers. Studies found that playing violent video games increases aggressive thoughts and behaviors in youth. Meanwhile, these same games decrease helping behaviors and feelings of empathy. (www.verywellfamily.com/causes-of-youthviolence-2611437) Violent media is prevalent in television, movies, advertising, and music. Many

young people are ‘soaking’ in this stuff. And if we’re honest - so are many adults.
Let’s begin with ourselves. Let’s attend to the way we speak and interact with others. Let’s pay attention to the things we ‘soak’ in and the influence we have on those observing us. Let’s attend to the family and encourage families to find better ways to interact and violent free entertainment. Additional contributing causes of violent behavior include drugs and alcohol, child abuse, domestic violence, peer pressure, mental illness and traumatic events. But not everyone exposed to such things escalates. What are the coping skills that help us keep on track? Let’s identify these and teach them. We all need to try harder to live at peace with those around us. We are called to be a part of the solution. And pray. We tend to pray after we hear news of violence. Let’s pray before. Pray prayers of prevention and intervention. Let’s keep our eyes open and pray for those who show early signs. Let’s boldly draw alongside and share how we’ve coped. Simply observing is not decreasing the problem. This problem involves all of us. It can’t be legislated or left to leadership. This takes building relationships and community, being there for each other and paying attention. We can’t turn our backs on the screaming next door or the person shouting threats any longer. Reach out to those who are victims. Help them get help. After an incident, friends and neighbors say they knew something was going wrong. We have a moral and civil responsibility to report possible abusive and violent behavior. Maybe the next mass shooting can be prevented. Let’s practice authentic love of neighbor. Relaxation Techniques While the home should be a sanctuary to relax and de-stress, the reality is that a lot of life’s biggest activities happen there. The good news is that it only takes a few minutes to ground yourself through meditation. In fact, recent studies indicate that meditation can improve relaxation, lower blood pressure and reduce anxiety. Learning a few easy meditation techniques will give you the ability to power through even the toughest days.
Unplug for just 5 minutesWhen you’re at home, set your phone on airplane mode, turn off the radio or TV, close the laptop - and just shut your eyes. Breathe deeply, in through the nose and out through the mouth, at least five times. Repeat a word or phrase in your mind like “Relax,” “Calm” or “Breathe in, breathe out.” When you’re ready, slowly re-acclimate to your surroundings. The one-minute breath For just a minute, commit to practicing this breathing technique to quiet your mind and
restore energy. * Breathe in for 5 seconds * Hold your breath for 5
seconds. * Release the breath for 5 seconds. * Hold for 5 seconds. Repeat just long enough to feel yourself become calmer. Peace begins with you Try this meditation technique to help you stay centered even when you’re feeling frazzled. * Gently press the thumb of one hand against that hand’s index finger, middle finger, ring finger, then pinkie finger. * When you touch your index finger to your thumb, say to yourself, “Peace.” * When you touch your middle finger, say to yourself, “Begins.” * When you touch your ring finger, say to yourself, “With.” * When you touch your pinkie finger to your thumb, says to yourself, “Me.” * Breathe deeply as you think each word, and go as slowly or as quickly as you like.

It’s Been A Year We certainly all know how fast time goes by. One moment it’s the New Year and then suddenly its Christmas again…with everything in between! How does that happen? Something else that is a certainty is that all Alzheimer’s patients are different. The disease has similar traits, of course, but how they affect each person and in what time frame can be very different. My mom has been in her care facility for just over a year. Another example of how fast time flies. I can remember the day I brought her there like it was just yesterday. While having her in a place that cares for her 24/7, offers a warm environment, and keeps her well-fed and clean is a Heaven-sent, it comes at a steep price tag. But let’s evaluate the price tag for a minute. While I worry about the cost of her care each time I write the monthly check, I have to admit that giving me piece-of-mind and freedom from the daily worry of her condition often outweighs my anguish. I KNOW I would not be able to care for her in the manner in which she is being cared for if she were still living in my home with me. Nor would I be able to create a life for myself if her care was a 24/7 impact of that life. I remember what the caregivers told me when I brought her to her new home: “OUR job is to take care of your mother and YOUR job is to love & enjoy your mother.” That comment always makes me feel better. And it’s a true one.
The facilities often do NOT accept insurance and they are definitely NOT covered under Medicare. It is a horrible thing when we have to worry about the financial part of care giving when we are most certainly worrying about our loved one. It can make us feel guilty that the financial burden even enters into our thoughts. But it does. The alternative that some of us ponder is to keep them at home to save money and to be with them. But statistics have proven that is NOT the solution once they deteriorate beyond our ability to physically care for them. My mom’s condition has worsened and deteriorated considerably since she’s been at her care home. But not because of their lack of care and attention. Research has indicated that once an Alzheimer’s patient gets to a facility and doesn’t have to feel embarrassed or worry about what they CAN’T do and are among people that are like they are, they are able to let go and just be. While that kind of comfort isn’t always wellreceived by us family members, it really isn’t about us. It’s what’s best for our loved-one. So…what does all this mean? What it means to ME is that I want my mom to be cared-for the best way possible. The best way I can afford. And the best way that takes away some of the care giving burden from me. The financial worry will always be a concern….of course. But not enough to compromise on her care. Submitted by Kathy Linton
But it doesn’t stop me from worrying about the financial hit. Remember….I am retired, an only child without children or a husband. And I lived on one income for many many years. I certainly have funds invested, but no one knows how long this monthly drain on my financial security will remain. She could be lost in this horrible disease for another year or so. And THAT is the haunting feeling many of us have in dealing with a loved-one in a care facility. Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine
