THINK BIG THIS SCHOOL YEAR
As your growing child gets ready for a new school year, think beyond shopping for a bigger backpack or a bigger pair of shoes. You may also need to upgrade to bigger speeds for your home’s internet connection — to better handle the bigger demands of more online homework (not to mention more streaming when the homework’s done). Wyyerd offers A+ internet plans with speeds up to 2 Gbps (2000 Mbps up and down), and they all include responsive local customer service, unlimited data, and no hidden fees or contracts!

From Me To You... Back to School! Those three words struck terror in my heart as a child, new people, new schedules, new places, new opportunities to embarrass myself with the amount of things I didn’t know. Would my new back-to-school outfits be cool or not? Would I get the teacher everyone loved, or be stuck with the ones everyone dreaded? The list was endless.
As a parent I felt slightly differently about back to school time. Entertaining 4 small people of varying ages for several months in the blistering heat of summer vacation went rapidly from an adventure full of opportunities to becoming a burden of keeping them busy and trying to stop the endless bickering. I must say that despite my resolutions at the beginning or each summer I did use television and later the internet in heavy doses - always in a educational way, of course ;) Now I am getting a degree and back-to-school applies to me. It is very different approaching education as an adult who has chosen to reapply myself to academia. I am soon to begin my second year as a Mature Student and this time

I have a confidence in my abilities as well as an interest in what I will be learning. Finding notebooks and pens is fun when I am doing it for myself. Ordering text books and choosing my subjects holds an appeal that I don’t remember from my youth. I studied Shakespeare in high school and we all dreaded it. The groans as we tried to understand the language would reverberate around the classroom. Now I see Twelfth Night on the curriculum and I am excited for the challenge. Perhaps that has something to do with my ability to get help via the internet now but either way it is going to be interesting. Having a full year under my belt I have the confidence that I can do this, and I realized that I enjoy learning. Interacting with others taking the same path and making new friends is all part of this journey and I am looking forward to going back to school! Yum Yum
I’m a soup girl, usually ordering it when I’m dining out if it’s on the menu, and I make it at home since it’s often a great way to use up leftovers in the fridge with a few pantry additions. This version of corn chowder is a crowd favorite ~ layering of flavors and textures ~ the sweet crispness of corn kernels, the creamy smoothness of the pureed potatoes and coconut milk, and the spicy kick of Madras curry powder. Many supermarkets carry McCormick Organic Mild Curry, yet you can easily order Rajah Mild Madras Curry Powder from Amazon for $7. Summer Curried Corn Chowder 1 large yellow onion, diced 2 garlic cloves, minced Pinch of dried thyme OR ¼ tsp fresh thyme leaves 2 T unsalted butter 3-1/2 C frozen corn OR 4 ears fresh, shucked with kernels cut off cob 4 C chicken bone broth or vegetable stock 2 large gold potatoes, peeled & diced
1 tsp sugar 2 T unsalted butter, melted 1 T Madras curry powder (or mild curry if you like it less spicy) ¼ - ½ C canned coconut milk 1 T chopped fresh cilantro Salt & pepper to taste Saute onion, garlic, and thyme in butter over medium heat in a large stock pot until onion begins to soften. Add the corn, stock, potatoes, and sugar and bring to boil. Lower heat and simmer for 25-30 minutes. In separate pan, melt 2 T butter and add curry powder; cook 3-5 minutes until fragrant. Remove soup from heat to puree in food processor. Scoop half of the soup into the bowl of the processor and blend until smooth. Return to soup pot. Stir in curry butter, coconut milk, cilantro, salt & pepper; cook for an additional 15 minutes so that flavors can blend. Best eaten the day it’s made! And always have some crusty bread nearby whenever you serve soup!! Submitted by Maureen Woods

Train Daily
Do you plan on leading your life or following everybody else? Most plan on leading their life with no training to do it effectively. Would developing your leadership skills give you an advantage in creating a successful personal life? If your answer is yes, then read on. In Youth4Youth, we learn the one quality that separates a leader from everyone else is…a leader has vision. We also discover we are not born a leader; we are trained to be a leader, so we recommend you train daily. Three easy ways to help you train daily and develop your leadership skills: 1. Read. Always be reading or listening to an uplifting, inspiring or positive book. It is not the amount we read but the quality of what we read. This habit will point your mind in a positive
You Deserve to be Comfortable
direction while increasing your leadership skills and creativity. 2. Set Goals. Your goals MUST be in writing. Make sure they are achievable, measurable, and specific. Set a date when you will accomplish each goal. READ your goals daily. (Ideally, do this first thing in the morning and just before bed.) BELIEVE it’s possible; let it go and go about your day or dream about it as you sleep. 4. Step out of your comfort zone. As an emerging leader, you want to find one opportunity to step out of your comfort zone each day. It may be asking a question in class or speaking up when you see someone being treated unkindly by others. The more we expand our comfort zone, the more confidence we develop and the bigger our world becomes, resulting in more opportunities. Practice these easy steps, and one day you will realize you are making the path and leaving the trail for others to follow. People will see you as lucky...you will know in your heart — it was because you decided to train daily. Legal Advice NON-STRESS ESTATE PLANNING
Estate planning does not need to be complex or confusing. You deserve to have your questions answered and have documents that help you when you need it most. On-line services and computer forms simply do not address the variety of issues that might arise. The court process of probate can be avoided with a revocable trust for some but others can utilize a beneficiary deed with more ease. Privacy laws can prevent you from being assisted by your spouse or trusted friend or family member. Powers of attorney can be give the right person the legal authority to help you.
However, you need the correct power of attorney – whether it be for finances; medical health or mental health. Inheritances for minors, whether children or grandchildren, can be bogged down by a court conservatorship, if a trust is not used. A court conservatorship is more costly and burdensome than a probate. A good estate plan provides centralized management for your assets whether you are incapacitated or upon your death and can avoid obstacles and disputes when there are multiple disputes. Spiritual Thoughts When I was younger, I was a Youth Director in Tucson Arizona. Together we went on service trips, to concerts, hosted lock-ins and dances, worshiped, camped. At one event I took the youth on we were given a beautifully acted-out portrayal of a young man who went to heaven and met with God to talk about all that he had done good and bad in life. Some believe God keeps track in order to reward us in the future. It isn’t in my tradition to believe that doing good works buys you a trip to heaven but instead that God gives salvation through grace, a gift that cannot be earned. Rachel Held Evans quoted Alexander Schmemann in her book Searching for Sunday. He writes of communion, but to me it is about more than that holy meal, it is about God’s love and forgiveness. “Life comes again to us as Gift, a free and divine gift…Everything is free, nothing is due and yet all is given. And, therefore, the greatest humility and obedience is to accept the gift, to say yes- in joy and gratitude.” With permission, I share this story. My husband and I were reflecting on his new dedication to balancing the house chores between us more equally. I commended him for the dishes he did,
Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine
the laundry he put in, the clothes he folded - all done in a night after he worked a full day. He responded that I had been carrying all that and more alone for years and that I should expect more from him in the following days and weeks. “Wow that’s a lot of weight to place on yourself if you are keeping track of everything.” I said, “How about we start fresh?” He agreed. I think what God does for us is pretty amazingforgiving and letting go of our mistakes. I also think it is something we should try and emulate. Let us forgive ourselves and others and thank God that if God keeps track of us, God is willing to forgive and offer love and life anyways. Spirit Song Church is dedicated to living out the commands to love God and love our neighbor. One way we are doing that is by offering a free after-school program starting in September on Wednesdays where school gets out at 1:00 pm at the Mountain Vista Club.
