From Me To You...

During this quarantine phase of our lives we have been looking at the inside of our house more than we used to. I am sure this has happened to you too. After a few weeks, and a few too many home improvement shows, we decided that things could do with sprucing up.

What did we decide to change? Well the lighting was original to the house, circa 2004, so that had to go. What followed was an intense internet search and voila, a box was delivered. Actually 5 boxes. The electrician was called and in a couple of weeks we had an updated lighting package.

Next the adult daughter was moving into her own apartment so that meant furniture moving.

It also meant a free room. We rearranged some things and voila, a new office! My desk (which was actually an old dining room table) is far too big for the new office space so I am ‘making do’ with my son’s desk for the moment. Due to the onset of online school in a few weeks I will be taking a trip to Ikea so that he can have his desk for his work, and I can get one that fits my needs too.

During the move we took a close look at the walls and I thought, “You know, this house could do with a refresh. Let’s paint it!” Easy right?

Off to Lowes we went and 7 paint samples came home with us. After staring at the samples and asking the opinion of everyone we could think of, a color was chosen. But before we could paint the walls, the cabinets needed our attention. We had painted our kitchen cabinets white a few years ago and they just needed a touch up.

Next on to painting the rest of the house. In the last 2 weeks we have completed the family room/kitchen, one bathroom and our office. It will be quite a project to complete the whole house especially if I keep getting side-tracked.

It reminds me of the children’s book about giving a mouse a cookie, he is going to need a glass of milk to go with it. The tale goes in a circle ending up with the mouse being thirsty and wanting a glass of milk, then he needs a cookie to go with it...

Spiritual Thoughts

Hello Vistancia!

My family and I were recently looking through a book of artist’s imaginings of stories from the Bible. The painting of Jesus at the temple at age 12 years of age caught our eye. “Which one is Jesus?” my son asked. I pointed to the boy in the center of other men gathered at the temple.

It appeared as if the young boy was teaching the elders. It made me think of the youth in our community and the feeling of unknown that is happening in relation to how our children will be educated this year.

In a normal year my family and I would be preparing for the school year’s return. I would be involved in getting school supplies to those who need them, and taking stock of our own needs. Right now, we are stuck in the unknown.

I do not envy the decision makers in our schools and government. They do not have an easy job right now.

Will we have in-person classes, distance learning from our homes? A mix of the two?

How should we respond to the on-going unknowns of trying to raise our families and living a “normal life?” In some ways, the famous song from the first Frozen movie resounds in my head, “Let it go...let it go…” I think it would help if I let go of the need to return to “normal.”

In the Hebrew scriptures we get the reminder to “Be Still and know that I am God…” This reminder happens in the midst of danger and chaos. Perhaps right now is a good time to be still and challenge ourselves to see the good around us.

And then I think about the young boy in the temple and his parents. His parents felt lost.

They did not know where their son was. He was not in a “normal” situation and they did not expect to find him where they did. We can learn so much from one another and we can learn a lot from letting go of our expectations. May you be blessed in this time of unknowing.

When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.”

There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown.

•

The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. It also allows for advertisers to re-position a brand or introduce a new product.

• Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times.

•

Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, which can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession.

• When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current – and possibly future – sales.

An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.”

An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits.

Another strategy used by marketers is changing the ad message and using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. Some advertisers will offer interest-free loans, coupons or special promotions to boost sales and market share. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return. For some advertisers that don’t give cost incentives, they can change the ad message to being expensive but worth it.

Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides.

Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/ or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share.

Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.”
