From Me To You...

I have come to the conclusion that I live in a very interesting state. Why? Because nearly everyone here is a transplant. There are very few people born and bred in Arizona. It is a destination state - a place to retire to, certainly, but also a place where the real estate is affordable and the cost of living is comparatively low. A place people migrate to because of the weather at home and the weather here.

Personally I will never forget my last winter in NY when the wind chill had our temperature at minus 17 degrees Fahrenheit. As I shovelled the snow off our sidewalk at 9 months pregnant, (I did this because I discovered that I am liable for accidents happening on the sidewalk in front of our house!) I decided then and there that it would be my last year doing so.

So here we are in this sunny climate, separated form our extended family. I am used to this way of life, having immigrated from the UK at 21, but my husband and most people here are not. It leaves you with a feeling of being slightly adrift.

There is no anchor to stabilize you, or hold you back. Suddenly the question of “Whose house do we go to for Thanksgiving?” or “Why does Aunt Doris always get Passover/Easter?” becomes moot. Now we ask, “What do you want to do this holiday?” Or my favorite, “Where are we making reservations this year?” Sometimes we open our home to friends and family who are also without a

destination, sometimes it is just us.

The downside to the situation, I have found, is that there is no tribe who have to be there when you call. No sister-in-law who will grudgingly watch the kids if you have an emergency, or a gaggle of cousins for the kids to play with and grow up with and build family memories with. That is a distinct disadvantage.

As time goes by we make connections, build our own tribe if you like. I have found that as I get older I am more circumspect about choosing those friends. People no longer become my companion because our children are the same age, or do the same extracurricular activity. That is a similarity of circumstance and I have found that it is not a good indicator of folk who share your values and goals. Being in a group of people who live a different lifestyle is never comfortable.

So over time my circle has ebbed and flowed into a solid core of people I love. I can truly say that they are the family I choose, not the ones given to me, and I am content. Some of them have children and some do not. Some own their own businesses, some work for ‘the man’ and a lucky few have retired. The one thing they all have in common is me and I am thankful for them.

Last month a longtime friend who had moved out of state was visiting for my daughter’s wedding, and as she left something she said struck me profoundly. She said that she could see I was surrounded by people who cared for me and that she was glad. She could relax knowing that even though she was no longer around the corner, I had people who would, and did, step up to fill the void she left. Friends who always help when I need it, whether I ask or not. These friends have become my family and I am so grateful I have found them and they have found me.

On Our Cover

The adorable family on our cover this month are the Campbells - Chris, Cynthia, Deborah, Joshua and Matthew. The Campbell family moved here from Florida with a job transfer for Chris.

Chris and Cynthia met through work when she was a buyer for Office Depot and he was a vendor. There was interest but nothing happened and they lost touch with each other. Seven years later they reconnected over Facebook by which time Chris was living in California. Meeting again on his way to a cruise departing from Florida they decided to make it work and after dating long distance for a while Chris moved back to Florida and they got married.

When the children came along Cynthia realized that the demands of her job were taking away from family time and she was missing the ‘day to day’ of her children, so she became a full time stay at home mom. Then her life took a different turn. After the birth of Matthew, Cynthia began to feel blue. Not wanting to say she had Post Partum, but definitely feeling down, she wanted to feel better but was unwilling to take medication.

Her father encouraged her to look into essential oils and she thought, “Why not give it a try?”

As Cynthia began to feel better she decided to research the use of oils more and after much deliberation enrolled in the Essential Oils Institute to get certified as an Essential Oils Coach.

The change in their lives has been wonderful for everyone (and boy does their house smell good!).

Cynthia can work from home, doing something she loves and still spend time with her family.

She concentrates on educating others in the use of Essential Oils, helping them navigate the confusion and guiding them to a treatment plan that works for them. The next stage is to convert a room in their house so she can do treatments at home.

The Campbells love the area and take full advantage of their local park, going on walks and having picnics - when the weather is cooler.

The children are all adorable, and full of energy!

Peace On Earth Only Human

“I’m only human!” I’m certain you’ve heard these words or perhaps spoken them yourself. You might say them when your child, grandparent, neighbor, boss, spouse, and dog have all demanded something of you at once. We can only be spread so thin. We’re not superheroes!

At the same time, those being exalted as heroes or stars or top leaders may exclaim, “I’m only human!” I can relate to that experience, too.

When my husband and I visited northern India, we were surprised to discover that the people hold pastors in very high esteem - uncomfortably high for me. Talk about being placed on a pedestal. They didn’t quite bow to us or part paths for us to walk through, but it felt like they revered us. We were given places of honor and, while others sat on the floor and ate with their fingers, we were given seats and utensils. It was humbling. I wanted to shout, “I’m only human!” A very true statement.

The group I want to write more about are all those who believe they have no gifts, no talents or skills, or believe they aren’t smart enough to do anyone any good. They belittle their capabilities and cease trying. When they say, “I’m only human,” they are saying, “I’m not capable of anything.” They are missing out on a wonderful truth. Each of us was knit together in

our mother’s womb by our Creator! God doesn’t make junk! And God has a plan, a good and perfect plan, for every life and gifts us accordingly.

We are called to use our gifts for the good of all. We aren’t called to be mini gods. We, as humans, because of God’s gifting, can make a difference. “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.”

(1 Peter 4:10) Each one. Not some of us. Not just those with graduate degrees. This verse means all of us have gifts we can use for the betterment of the world. Imagine, what would the world be like if each of us tapped into these amazing God given gifts?

Yes, we’re each ‘only human.’ That’s ok, because in our weakness, our humanness, we lean into Christ more and his power rests on us. Because of Christ, when we are weak, we are made strong and capable. (Read 2 Corinthians 12:810) Learn to call on the strength of the Lord in all you attempt, and you’ll learn God’s faithfulness in helping you to accomplish much more than you thought possible. Yes, you!

Age In Place

American household demographics constantly change. With kids grown and moved out, many adults are considering remodeling to meet their future needs. This has inspired the idea of aging in place, meaning the desire to have a high quality of life in your home as you get older. In the United States, it’s a desire shared by many.

According to the AARP, 87 percent of adults age 65 and older want to stay in their current home and community as they age. Furthermore, among people age 50 to 64, 71 percent of people want to age in place. The desire to age in place typically requires making thoughtful updates to a home to accommodate senior needs.

Multigenerational households are also changing for older family members. Sometimes it’s necessary to have elderly relatives move in to your home for them to thrive. Adult children will opt to make remodeling updates so spaces are safe, comfortable and accessible for all.

Whether you’re remodeling for yourself or a family member, there are many things to consider. Making changes where it matters most will help transform the household into a secure space for aging adults.

Avoid using rugs and instead install slip-resistant flooring.

There may be spaces in a home where you can’t avoid installing a ramp or stairs. The entryway is one such area. For ramps, the National Association of Home Builders recommends slopes no greater than 1-inch rise for each 12 inches in length, a 2-inch curb for safety and a 5-foot landing at the entrance.

As vision decreases with age, lighting becomes a critical element throughout a home. Consider adding windows and skylights for plenty of natural light. Swap in brighter bulbs and add adjustable features that allow you to customize settings for frequently used spaces. Finally, add motion lights to hallways and bathrooms for easy evening use.

Hard-wired lights are preferred to plug-in options, but if you must have cords, make sure they are hidden or secured to the ground.

When aging in place matters to you or your family members, these guidelines can help you remodel wisely. Smart updates will help you enjoy your home today and thrive in the future.

Having all rooms on a single story is the ideal layout for senior living. That means the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen can be accessed without having to travel to different levels of the home.

Keep in mind, open-concept designs can be beneficial for seniors, but if you are updating hallways, make sure they are at least 36 inches wide for easy maneuverability.

Bathrooms are one of the most dangerous rooms in a home, particularly for those age 65 and older who are more prone to falls. Living With Faith The art of Healing

The beginning of anything is quite amazing. Of course there are good beginnings as well as bad.

But when we think of the start of something we always believe that the goodness of creating is in itself a blessed event.

We are taught that creation began with words – “And God said…” The lesson is quite simple: Words are a vital part of beginnings. We meet someone, we fall in love, but we begin the process with a conversation so that each of us is aware of the other. We cannot have any kind of relationship without some form of communication.

And yet there are times when we just don’t want to talk or listen and want to be alone with our thoughts. But we are reminded that that it is not good to be alone. We were created to be part of, not apart from each other. Adam wanders aimlessly, unsure of his purpose and God realizes that to be alone is not the intention of creation. Loneliness is not an endurable feature of humanity. God tells us that everything that was created was good but when it comes to man being alone He says that it is not good.

We meld our thoughts and actions so that we can dream dreams, learn about who we are and where we want to go. We struggle with just enough tension to keep us even closer and

enough joy to make us glad we have awakened to a new day.

We wish for a warm wind to blow to cool us, and a winter chill to enable us to hold tightly to each other. We listen to each other because words brought us together and will give us even greater strength to know each other’s hearts. And we need to see each other’s smile and wipe the teardrops in the corner of our eyes before it becomes a river.

Imagine that today is the beginning of the rest of our lives. There will be disappointments but there will also be ecstasy. There will be bitterness but there will also be sweetness. The commitment we make is a promise to bring into the relationship a feeling of family and friends. The words spoken ever so softly in the moment of passion should remind us to value each other as special and unique individuals with respect for each others thoughts and feelings.

This can be a special moment in time, the beginning of the rest of our lives. Perhaps we should enhance the sacredness of this time with the beauty of forgiveness and the understanding of the love shared. Perhaps, also, we will know that our dreams are connected to each other and the hopes that we carry forward will enable us to get through any storm and complete the blessing of union. This is true Healing!

Kitchen Safety Cooking equipment is the top cause of home fires, and the second leading cause of home fire deaths, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

“Considered to be one of the more preventable types of fires, kitchen fires can be avoided by following a few common-sense guidelines,” says Tarsila Wey, director of marketing at First Alert.

“Home safety experts recommend having at least one fire extinguishing product conveniently located in the kitchen, as well as on every level of the home and in the garage.”

Be prepared to fight the small flames by following the below tips to stay safe in the kitchen.

Properly equip your home. Keep your family and house safe by ensuring that functioning smoke alarms are installed throughout your home.

The NFPA recommends one alarm on every floor, including the basement, and inside every bedroom. In addition, install smoke alarms at least 10 feet from cooking appliances to minimize false alarms. All alarms should be tested monthly, and for alarms without 10-year batteries, replace the batteries every six months.

Drink Up!

Staying hydrated is a necessity, but sometimes it’s difficult to tell when your body needs water, especially during warmer months. Experts say on average men need 15 cups (3.6 liters) and women need 11 cups (2.6 liters) of water per day.

Our bodies are about 60 percent water, and just losing 1.5 percent can be the tipping point for mild dehydration. Culligan International, a world leader in the treatment of water, is offering tips to keep you and your people well hydrated.

1. Bring water on the go.

Going to work, the park, the pool or the library?

Wherever you are headed, always bring a reusable water bottle.

This goes for your people too. Have each member of your household choose their own water bottle and label it with their name. Allowing young children to pick a favorite water bottle provides added incentive to take frequent water breaks. Set the water bottles in a high-traffic area or close to the door so you don’t forget them when leaving home. And refill, refill, refill whenever empty.

Before eating, be sure to rinse produce under filtered water to safely clean and maintain the health benefits. Fruits and veggies are also easy to serve at home and eat on the go.

2. Drink good water. Not all water is created equal. Filling your reusable bottle with filtered water can ensure it not only tastes better, but is also better for you. Home filtration or reverse osmosis (RO) systems work to reduce contaminants that may be in your tap water.

1. Make a list of retirement “needs” and “wants.” If you do not have enough savings for all of your “needs,” make a ten-year plan to increase your funds.

2. Take a hard look at any major debts you have and develop a plan to eliminate them.

3. Brainstorm any “big ticket” financial commitments for the next 10 years and consider how these items might affect your ability to save for retirement.

4. Continually monitor and analyze your asset allocation to make sure it is the right one for you. Understand whether you should move to a more conservative asset allocation or continue investing for growth.

5. Be tax efficient with your investments. For example, you should defer as much of your salary as you can to your defined contribution plans.

6. Save to an emergency fund and stay aware of your company’s financial situation. Companies are prone to reorganizations and layoffs, and older workers can be vulnerable.

7. Ask your HR department about the relationship between your current health insurance and Medicare, as well as what your options are when you reach age 65. Get information about any pension or defined contribution options and any other retiree benefits.

8. Research when stock-based compensation might expire and what stock awards you can retain after retirement.

9. Double check your reported Social Security earnings and resolve any discrepancies now.

Decluttering

Getting your house in order can be a struggle, especially as we age. Sorting through decades of belongings is often emotional and stressful, as questions and decisions pile up: Is this jewelry valuable? What should I do with all these tools I no longer use? Will this china set have sentimental value to my children?

But while it can be exhausting, this effort to declutter and simplify can be worthwhile, not only for our homes but also for our health.

Getting rid of things you no longer need or want may have a positive effect on mental health and can also make for a safer environment.

Decluttering can help keep paths clear and obstacles to a minimum. A study at Indiana University showed that people with clean houses are healthier than people with messy houses.

Regular household chores like vacuuming and washing windows can be great physical activity.

A tidy home can also mean we’re more likely to invite people over - prompting interactions that can help alleviate feelings of depression and isolation that can accompany aging.

* Don’t judge yourself. It’s harder to decide what to do with items that have been in the family for generations than it might be for millennials to decide what to do with items from their college years. * Take it one room at a time. According to a study

by Moen, the most-cluttered areas of a home are the garage, kitchen and home office. The kitchen is a good place to start the decluttering process, because throwing away chipped dishes and expired spices isn’t as taxing as wading through boxes of potentially important paperwork or personal items. Take everything out of the fridge and cupboards and spread it all out on a counter or table so it’s easy to review. Give shelves a good wipe-down and restock them with the necessities, putting go-to things within easy reach, and donating or storing appliances and dishes that are used less often. Once you feel good about your progress in the kitchen, move on to tackle the garage, office and other spaces where belongings tend to pile up. Like closets! * Keep only what you wear the most. Pick a handful of favorite outfits for everyday wear, social outings and special occasions, seasonal wear and wardrobe staples, and donate the rest. * Stop the build-up before it begins. Keep a recycling bin handy for unwanted credit card offers and coupon packs before they enter the house.

At the end of the day, it’s OK to hang on to belongings that are near and dear to you. But for items that don’t hold sentimental or functional value, kick-start a decluttering mission today so you can enjoy a tidier, safer home tomorrow.

Back 2 School Back-to-school readiness contributes to your child’s academic success

Approximately 55 million students in the U.S. will head back to class soon. From dealing with firstday jitters to shopping for school supplies, it’s an exciting and chaotic time.

Reports show a correlation, however, between the start of school and student performance - early positive school experience leads to better emotional wellbeing and academic achievement. So, the pressure is on for parents to get it right.

A little advance planning can go a long way toward making sure the transition is smooth for everyone.

1. Start the school night bedtime routine at least a week before the first day. It gives your child’s body clock time to adjust when there are fewer distractions. Plus, good rest the night before will eliminate stressful mornings on school days.

2. Fuel them up with a protein-packed breakfast.

Kids and teens who have a good breakfast are more focused, perform better in school and make healthier food choices throughout the day.

Without breakfast, kids (and their parents) can become irritable, distracted and tired.
