From Me To You...

As a child summertime was full of endless possibilities. Playing with friends, reading, going on long family walks, visiting relatives, vacationing, sleeping in, and just relaxing. As a parent it seems to be full of finding things to do with the kids. Summer camps, activities, swimming, travel, more swimming, organizing school supplies for next year, day trips, museums, and more swimming. Also in Arizona the importance of staying cool either at home or anytime we have to leave the house is at the top of the list - hence all the swimming.

This year my summer is being dubbed “The Summer of Moving Out” and with 3 kids going on to college or the start of their own independent lives, we have a busy time ahead.

As I write this I am in Tennessee with one kid (ahem adult), buying furniture and helping her set up her life here. There are so many things to help her organize that it sometimes makes my head spin, I really think moving from state to state is more complicated than moving to America here from abroad.

Once this one is settled, it is on to the next location for a college drop off. I am looking forward to that one because of the weather. Summer in Washington state sounds a heck of a lot better than braving the Arizona heat. I can go for walks outside without applying factor 70 sunscreen, I will have to apply bug repellent though, so there is a trade off. After that we go to Hawaii. I know these kids have made some interesting choices... but who am I to argue with a week spent floating down a lazy river or touring a volcano?

Although this summer is packed with exciting trips and activities, what I am really looking forward to is the fall. I can read, sleep in, go for long walks and reconnect with friends and family.

As I think about it, it is beginning to sound a lot like the summers of my childhood, but thankfully without the specter of a new school term ahead of me!

2/3 C Olive Oil One of my more versatile and popular salads is Pomegranate Couscous, bursting with vegetables 2 tsp Honey 2 T Pomegranate Juice and a sweet bite of honey vinaigrette. It works 1 tsp Dijon Mustard great as side to grilled meat and seafood or as a main dish with the addition of a few slices of goat 1 tsp Kosher Salt ½ tsp Black Pepper cheese over baby greens. If you can’t find the larger pearl couscous in your local supermarket, it can be easily ordered through Amazon ~ Geten Pour boiling water over couscous and olive oil.

Allow to bloom, approx 30 minutes. Allow to Israeli Pearl Couscous/3-pack for $8.79. cool. Toss butternut squash with 1 T olive oil, add salt & pepper to taste. Saute over med-high heat Mermaids Pantry Pomegranate Couscous Salad until beginning to brown; turn off heat and cover.

Get In The Way The teenage years are an exciting time for our teens. What triggers this excitement? Physical development (aka puberty). This also initiates brain development where teens experience increased cognitive abilities, learning, and memory due to rapid brain development. During this time, the teen brain is hardwiring itself for adulthood. Thoughts, feelings, and actions repeated over time become a set of neurons that become pathways that are used for decisionmaking and behavior patterns in adulthood.

Physical development is on autopilot. Once it starts, it just happens, unlike the intellectual, social, and emotional growth which has to be nurtured and developed. Part of that growth is becoming aware of emotions and learning to deal with them rather than avoid them. The use of alcohol or drugs during this period creates pathways that often lead to poor decisionmaking and a pattern of questionable choices

resulting in a lifetime of struggle. This is a key reason 93% of people who enter treatment for a substance use disorder began using in their teenage years, impacting the brain’s hardwiring.

Here’s another crucial point: Elaborate changes in the brain’s dopamine system are also happening.

The dopamine system influences learning about what is rewarding in the environment. And if that’s not enough, throw this into the mix; the teen brain focuses on risk and excitement – that’s why teens get bored quickly. What’s exciting to many of them? Rumors, gossip, drama, social media, sports, theater, parties, who is dating who, and high-risk behaviors like sneaking out of the house at night, having sex, stealing alcohol or pot from home, taking a few prescription drugs from the medicine cabinet, and one more thing; not getting caught. All these high-risk behaviors have what the teen brain focuses on – risk and excitement.

Our job as parents is to foil these high-risk behavior attempts. The teen’s focus is on the here and now. Future scenarios or consequences are not part of the thinking process for most teen brains. Teens place more weight on perceived benefits like being accepted, being liked, a sense of belonging, and social engagement; thus, many follow the crowd due to peer pressure.

Legal Advice

MAKE A WILL, NOT A MISTAKE While there are many forms of estate planning documents available on line, there are just as many ways to make mistakes that could cause problems for you and your loved ones.

Original documents are important. Financial institutions want to see original powers of attorney and Wills. The court process to probate a copy of a Will can be double the time and cost of probating an original. Legal terms have specific meaning. The term “heir,” when meaning “descendants,” could result in unintended rights to a spouse or sibling.

Powers of attorney should not be contingent on you being incapacitated. Once you are found

incapacitated, you lose your legal rights to handle financial decisions. You should not have to lose your rights, when you just need help on the phone or going to the bank.

Health care powers of attorney should cover mental health as well as medical health care.

Avoid court intervention by having a complete health care power of attorney.

If you have a revocable trust, be sure your assets are titled in the trust or made payable to a trust.

If you do not have a trust, be sure you fully utilize beneficiary designations in order to avoid probate.

Spiritual Thoughts I love you. I thought I would get that out of the way before I shared any other thoughts. I really do. And I know we don’t know each other, but I really hope you and yours are healthy. I hope you are finding meaning in life and staying hopeful about the future.

I have found that there is a big difference between loving someone and having love for someone. Loving someone is an action.

It is working for their well-being. It is putting resources behind your intentions for their wellbeing. It does not mean liking them, agreeing with their beliefs, or agreeing with their actions.

It just means you hope they are healthy, taken care of and that they turn out alright in the end.

Confession. I have a hard time loving people

sometimes. Which really means - I don’t always have fuzzy feelings for people.

For example, I don’t have fuzzy feelings for people who try to take more than their fair share who don’t need it. I don’t have fuzzy feelings for those who put the welfare of others at risk for their own agenda, power or wealth. I do not have fuzzy feelings for liars or for people who act out of hate for another. However, the more I work for someone’s well-being (love them), the fuzzier feelings I have for them (love them.) The more I love on them, the more I have love for them.

This kind of love that we have for people is like the unconditional love of God. And we can practice having it every time we work for one another’s well-being. In Romans 8:35-37-39 we are reminded of this kind of love. It is the kind of love that isn’t determined by how good or bad we are, how we feel, etc. God loves us and there is nothing we can do about it!

At Spirit Song Church we have begun looking at how God is Love and Love is the Way. This theme will help guide us through the 2022 and 2023 year. I will begin on this journey by working toward the wellbeing of others, even the others I don’t like.

I challenge you to do this in your life.
