From Me To You... Having many choices in life seems like a wonderful thing, but are you like me in that if I have too many choices I am paralyzed by indecision? I always say that if I can choose between three things then I am happy. Any more than that and I just can’t seem to decide. And if my decision affects others, which it most often does, then I am struck even more by the weight of my picks.
Take vacations. I love to plan them and dream about the destination and the cute boutique hotel or AirBNB that I will be resting in at the end of a day well spent. I can spend hours, or even days scouring travel sites and reading recommendations looking for that perfect holiday - and mostly enjoy it. Once it gets to making an actual decision I come to a screeching halt. I love this hotel but will my son be OK with sharing a room with his parents again? Or perhaps this house rental would be a better option, again someone will be sleeping on a couch, but it’s just for a few nights... I usually manage to narrow it down to a few options then the reviews throw me off - there are always good and bad ones. This house has the best ambience! But it is also in a shady neighborhood and we shouldn’t go out at night. This hotel has the largest rooms (very important when traveling with children)! But it doesn’t have a restaurant/pool on site (also very important when travelling with children). This one is perfect! But it is way out of budget. Sigh.
it for everyone. After 2 days of force-marching the family around the first two parks on a tight schedule, it occurred to me that there was no earthly way ‘to see and do everything’. So I took a deep breath and decided that being in the happiest place on earth meant that we should at least try to be happy ourselves. I gave up control and let the kids guide our days from then on. Did we do the Muppet 4D ride more times in a row than I care to remember? Yes. Did we blow our fast passes on It’s A Small World? Yes we did. Did the kids have the best time? I like to think so. The complaints certainly stopped, so I take that as a win. Our next vacation (the first since Covid) is coming up and I think I have everything set. As long as those darned hurricanes don’t decide to visit the same town as us, we should have a wonderful time. Even I know I can’t choose the weather!

The Bug Guy
The hot Arizona sun can send temperatures skyrocketing in June with daytime highs of 115 degrees or more hitting the west valley. Humidity levels crash because the sun’s energy heats the air, preventing water vapor from being released. We all look forward to the sweet relief of monsoon season when high temperatures fall about 10 degrees to the 100-105 degree range and heavy rains soak the parched desert. During the monsoon period, the dew point temperatures can rise to the 55-65 degree level across the Phoenix metro area and the relative humidity can exceed 40 percent. This increase in humidity produces thunderstorms, which are more common in higher elevations but occasionally move onto the desert floor. Sometimes these thunderstorms carry little rain but produce a haboob, or dust storm. The most intense haboobs lift dust over 5,000 feet into the air and travel up to 150 miles. Other times, thunderstorms across the Southwest produce torrential rain in a short period of time. In these situations, rivers, creeks or dry streams quickly fill and produce high water on roadways, even in cities like Goodyear and Buckeye. Monsoon season is a fact of life in the desert, but you might not realize they are a catalyst for some of the most dreaded winged creatures … termites.
6 Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine
Termites love monsoon season, which sends them swarming by the hundreds as they search for that “special someone” with which to make babies and start a new colony. The moisture eventually draws them inside where they look for wood that comes in contact with house foundations and cracks in building exteriors. A firmly established termite colony can be difficult to eradicate and if left untreated, termites can cause structural damage to your home. It’s good idea to get ahead of curve with some preventative service before the seasonal pests can cause permanent and expensive damage. Now that the summer rains are imminent, it’s time to call your pest professional to protect your most important investment – your home. Spiritual Thoughts
Hello Vistancia!
Can we start over please? Don’t get me wrong...I don’t want to re-write over 2020 entirely, but I do want to have 2020 version 2.0. We cannot go back and we cannot slow time down either. That’s not how it works. Do you have regrets over the past year? Is there something you wish you could do over? Something that you could have done differently? July marks 1 year since my family arrived in Vistancia. We have met kind, talented people. We enjoy everything about our physical neighborhood. We have appreciated the events that the Vistancia Village HOA has put on, even in the middle of the pandemic. I wouldn’t take any of it back. At the same time, I feel like we lost ground. We lost opportunities. Perhaps this happens whenever we reflect back on anniversaries or birthdays. We reflect on what we could have done differently. Are you a
MONTHLY SPECIAL
person who looks back to reflect on the past, or do you look to the future?
I am reminded that Jesus said to a potential disciple, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” For me, this means that if you hope to be successful in your endeavors, if you aim to be a part of something bigger than yourself, then you must learn from your past and then look to the future. You cannot keep your mind, your heart, or any part of yourself in the past. Another image comes from theawkwardyeti.com. It is a picture of Heart and Brain rock-climbing up a vertical cliff. Heart wonders aloud, “why is it so hard to move forward with our life?” Heart looks back and sees that Brain is holding onto a heavy bag labeled “Past Mistakes.” After letting go of those, Heart wonders why it is still so hard. Looking down, Heart sees that Brain is carrying a heavy load labeled “Fear of Failure.” These are the things that bog us down as we try to move forward. As we journey on, it is important to let go of the expectations that were not met. Look to the future. It is very bright. And know you are not journeying alone. Money Matters You might think you need to have a large estate or millions of dollars to benefit from working with a trust company, but that’s not the case. And if you’re not familiar with what a trust company can do, you might be surprised at all the services it can provide, including the following: • Wealth management – Typically, when working with a trust company, it can manage retirement accounts, monitor investments and disburse funds, make changes as needed and ensure compliance with government reporting for contributions, withdrawals and rollovers. While different companies operate in different ways, you may have an arrangement in which you work with a personal financial advisor and a separate portfolio manager. • Financial management during incapacity – If you were to become incapacitated and couldn’t make financial decisions, a trust company can step in, giving you peace of mind from knowing that your financial assets will be managed by a team of professionals, helping protect you and your family from potentially dire consequences.
•Trust administration – The company can act as trustee for a trust you’ve established, such as a revocable living trust, which can allow your estate to avoid probate while providing you with great control over how your assets will be distributed at your passing. Alternatively, the trust company can work alongside an individual you’ve designated to execute the terms of a trust. When it’s time to settle your estate, the trust company can handle the valuation, dispersion and re-titling of assets, pay off any debts and expenses, and complete any tax returns related to your estate. In addition to providing these practical services, a trust company may benefit you in a more intangible way. It’s unfortunate but true that, in many families, dividing up assets can cause conflict and bitter feelings. But when a trust company serves as trustee, it impartially administers distribution of the assets based on the instructions you’ve provided in the trust – helping minimize family disputes over inheritances. Summer Help Being a teacher always comes with challenges, but through the uncertainties of the pandemic, it quickly became one of the toughest jobs in the country. Tasked with keeping students calm, engaged and learning - whether in school, at home or hybrid (not to mention added safety protocols) - was a big ask. Yet, as they always do, teachers rose to the challenge and helped keep students learning while providing a muchneeded sense of normalcy. As educators attempt to rest and refuel for next school year, summer is a great time to show you care and appreciate all they do. Here are five simple ways to give a little love back to the teachers that work so hard for students:
Volunteer Leverage your talents and interests to help out at local schools. Ask about what your family can do over the summer months to help the community and build school pride. Ask about maintaining the school garden or grounds, see if the library needs help sorting books, offer your time to assist teachers cleaning their rooms, or sign up to volunteer during back-to-school days. Prevent summer learning loss During summer break, kids can lose valuable knowledge in reading and math - a phenomenon commonly referred to by educators as the “summer slide.” You can help prevent it by making learning a regular part of your child’s summer break by weaving in short activities

throughout the day. Make your way through fun workbooks and try to read 20 minutes a day. Explore your local community by visiting a museum, growing a garden or visiting a park. Embrace STEAM and try building DaVinci’s Bridge with pencils or creating bookmarks from duct tape and craft supplies. Experiential learning is great for the summer months. Spread the good word During difficult times, words of encouragement and appreciation mean the world. Write a handwritten letter to the principal and share your appreciation for a specific teacher who made an impact on you this year. Go online and post positive reviews on educational websites. Encourage your child to speak positively about school by leading the way yourself - kids adopt and reflect your attitude, so show appreciation for teachers and a high value of education, and your children will do the same. Buy extra supplies According to The National Center for Education Statistics, 94% of teachers reported spending their own money on classroom supplies without reimbursement. Buy extra supplies for the classroom when school shopping and shop at Staples Stores where it benefits teachers directly: Starting July 1 through September 30, teachers earn 20% back in rewards on every purchase parents make when they sign up for Classroom Rewards. Teachers can register and parents can sign up at Staplesconnect.com/ classroomrewards. Teachers do so much for children and have been a pillar of hope and stability during the pandemic. These simple ideas will have a big impact while conveying your gratitude. July 2021

Senior Fitness It’s no secret that staying physically active supports overall well-being, especially for older adults. Improved health, lower health care costs and reduced hospital stays are some of the benefits enjoyed by active seniors, according to a recent nationwide study by Avalere Health and Tivity Health, a national provider of SilverSneakers, a community fitness program designed for older adults. The study compared new SilverSneakers participants and closely matched non-participating Medicare Advantage beneficiaries. So how much are healthcare costs reduced by participating in this program? The study’s findings showed the total cost of medical care for participants to be 16% lower than for nonparticipants and total annual average health expenses among participants to be $4,463 compared to $5,303 for non-participants.
decide to do to stay physically active, start slow and increase length or intensity as you build endurance. Any movement is better than no movement, so be proud of your efforts. Listen to your body and when you need to rest or take a break, do what feels right. Research senior programs: Fitness programs focused on the needs of older adults help position you for success while also connecting you in community or virtually with likeminded people. Check virtual options: Not everyone is comfortable with indoor fitness, so consider online alternatives. Check eligibility: Some health plans offer options for low-cost or no-cost fitness programs. For example, SilverSneakers is available at no cost for adults 65 and older through select Medicare plans. Visit silversneakers.com to verify eligibility.
“This research shows that seniors who are regularly engaged in more healthy behaviors enjoy improved health outcomes and lower health care costs compared to those who do not incorporate exercise in their daily routine,” said Julie Logue, fitness expert and senior trainer at Tivity Health. “More than just exercise, the impact of senior fitness is also emotional and social, providing older adults an opportunity to make meaningful connections with others.” She recommends the following tips to keep in mind when starting an exercise routine: Talk with your doctor: Before you try a new fitness routine or take a class, speak with your doctor to make sure it’s a good fit for your health needs. You can typically reach out through your clinic’s nurse triage line or through a telehealth appointment so you can get insight without an in-person visit to the doctor’s office. Out & About After a devastating pandemic kept people in their homes for over a year, wanderlust is at an all-time high and more Americans are starting to get back out there. In fact, 92% of Americans will travel, or already have, in 2021, with more than half (52%) going as soon as this summer, according to the Priceline Work-Life Balance report. With that in mind, Priceline looked at how travel has changed and what trends are emerging for the summer peak travel season. 1. Escapism is top of mind When it comes to air travel, hotel stays and car rentals, Americans are prioritizing warm, tropical and entertainment-focused destinations, such as Hawaii, Las Vegas, Mexico and Orlando. Florida, in particular, is a traveler favorite right now. The Sunshine State dominates the top 10 destinations across all three categories with at least four cities on each list.
Black Hills, home to Mount Rushmore, or Pigeon Forge, a 25-minute drive from Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains National Park. 4. Package deals enable workcations The blurring of work-life boundaries gave rise to the “bleisure” trip or workcation, a hybrid of business and leisure travel. As flexible work schedules become a long-term possibility for many, these extended leisure-first trips, which incorporate remote work as part of the experience, will continue to drive booking preferences. Because of this, Priceline is seeing increased interest in bundled or package trips, which are conveniently booked together and offer savings. As domestic tourism ramps up, expect to see continued preference for beach getaways and entertainment, alongside an ongoing appreciation for the local surroundings and an increased willingness to blend vacations with work.
2. Local exploration matters more than ever When the pandemic took hold, flights came to an almost screeching halt. Travelers flew four billion miles fewer in 2020 than they did in 2019. Not only did people fly less often, but they also did not travel as far: The average distance dropped by 20% in 2020, compared to the same period in 2019. Instead, Americans are opting to explore locally, with 70% of car rentals used for road trips within their own state and driving an average of 184 miles. Likewise, today’s travelers are booking hotel stays within their own states 10% more than prior years. 3. Wallet-friendly stays abound in the South and West Travel deals are more important than ever. This year, the average hotel stay costs under $125 a night in Las Vegas; the Black Hills, South Dakota; Denver and Orlando, which means you can enjoy a great getaway without blowing your budget. College Visits If you’re a high school junior or heading into your senior year, college is likely at the top of your mind - and probably your parents’ mind too. A campus visit, virtually or in-person, is a key way to narrow down your college choice. The same is true for students who are considering transferring to a new school to complete their degree. So, where do you begin? 1. Research schools It’s important to give yourself time to explore different colleges. Make a wish list of schools - from the size of the school and location to area of study and post-graduation career opportunities. It’s also a good idea to attend college fairs, so you can talk with college representatives and current students. From your list of schools, check out their options for touring the campus - either in-person or online. By attending campus tours, you’ll get a feel for the campus environment, and ultimately, if a particular college is a good fit for you. 2. Budget for campus visits Expenses for traveling to and from college tours can add up quickly. Whether nearby or out-ofstate, know the maximum amount that you or your parents are able to spend on these visits. This includes the cost of gas, airfare, food, accommodations and other activities. Consider even setting up a separate bank account for money to use toward college visits. That way, you’ll be prepared to stick to your budget. 3. Get your questions about classes and campus life answered Most in-person college visits are led by student tour guides - giving you a great opportunity to hear their perspective about academic programs, admissions and student life. Additionally, make use of a college’s offer to talk with current professors and students. If you’re unable 14 Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine
to attend in-person, this is a way to still experience the school and people. Other questions to cover can include housing options, sports and extracurricular activities that interest you personally or are unique to a school.
4. Find out what financial aid options are available The College Board reported that tuition and fees reached over $10,560 for in-state students at four-year public colleges and more than $37,650 for students at four-year private colleges in the 2020-21 academic year. Look into financial aid options, such as scholarships, grants and workstudy programs. When federal student loans, grants or scholarships don’t cover your total costs, private student loans are a great way to bridge the gap in funding. Many lenders offer private student loans up to the school-certified cost of attendance, including tuition fees, books, computers, meals and housing.

Weekend DIY
Virtual birthday parties. Online family game nights. Digital dinners with friends. You’ve done your part to stay connected yet socially distanced, however, as restrictions lift across the country, you’re eager to host friends and family in your home again.
“The problem is after over a year of working, studying and playing at home, many people’s houses are looking a bit drab,” says Jennifer Meska, Director of Merchandising & Design at LL Flooring. “If you want to refresh spaces for future entertaining, start with the floor and work your way up to add both fashion and function to your home.” Meska shares some top DIY projects that can be completed in as little as a weekend so you’re ready to welcome back guests:

Create a statement wall Once you decide on an arrangement of furniture, try transforming a focal wall to give the space an elevated interior design. One easy way to do this is to paint one wall different than the others in an accent color, like a blue or yellow. DIY-friendly peel-and-stick wallpaper is growing in popularity and is another fun option if you want to add a pattern on an accent wall. Another way to create a noteworthy accent wall is to design a gallery wall with a collection of treasured items hung in a group. Framed photography is common for creating gallery walls and serves as a wonderful conversation starter when guests arrive.
