From Me To You...

Lately I have been feeling like a swan. No, not graceful or suddenly beautiful. I feel like I am maintaining poise and remaining calm on the surface, whilst under the waterline I am peddling furiously, trying to keep up. Anyone else?

The world is not the place it was a mere six months ago, heck it was different a mere two weeks ago. The things I worried about then seem almost laughable now. Except they are still the things I worry about, there is just a new layer of larger issues placed on top of everything else.

Perhaps I am not a swan but a camel, balancing straws one after another, wondering which one will break me? And yet, they don’t. Break me. I can’t let them. I have to keep balancing, keep peddling away under the water. Because if I stop what happens to the people who rely on me? I will not let them be dragged down. I know I am not alone in this place — many others are feeling this way. You can tell when you talk to them. A flicker in their gaze, or an unexpected pause in a conversation that displays a slight distance midsentence. That moment when they remember their problems looming overhead.

I feel you. I know you. I am you.

There have been many times in history when civilization was in the balance, when people despaired that the future belonged to them.

(The Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, the Spanish Flu, wars, famines, and plagues, to name a few.) We will look back at this period one day and marvel at what we overcame, what we achieved and what we survived. Our children and our children’s children will read about it in history and be relieved that it didn’t happen to them. I do that when I read about tragedies. Phew, I am sure glad that didn’t happen to me! Well this time it did and it is.

Is this a test from God? Are we being measured against an almighty yardstick? I hope not. I am not confident in my ability to pass that test.

But I can tell you what I am confident in. Our perseverance, our will to survive and thrive. We, as a human race, always come through in the end. We are scrappy.

I don’t know what is coming next - and believe me there will be another challenge next week. I do know we can handle it. Together.

Cabin Fever?

It’s not always easy to be at home with kids day after day, but with a little creativity, you can beat cabin fever. Whether you’re in your own backyard or venturing out, there are plenty of things you can do to have fun together. Here are just a few things to try.

Play tourist Pretend your car is a tour bus. Let Mom or Dad play tour guide first, modeling what to say (serious and/or funny). Drive by picturesque or unusual locations and make up the “tour” as you go along. Then let your kids take a turn narrating the “sights” as you drive.

Enjoy a treat with the family Take a tour to find the best shake or burger.

Make washing the car an event Young children will have a blast being in the car during the washing process. Turn up their favorite songs while you sit back and watch the suds and water do their work. Or you could involve the kids in washing the family car in your driveway.

Make the most of your own yard You’d be amazed how much kids can appreciate their own yard, with just a little help. * Create an obstacle course using large cardboard boxes, hula hoops, cones or other items from your garage. * Make bubbles with 1 part dish soap to 3 parts water, adding a little sugar. Stir the mixture gently. Use pipe cleaners or cut out the bottom of plastic water bottles to create wands. * Use sidewalk chalk to draw hopscotch and other games, plus pictures and hopeful messages for neighbors walking by. * Find veggies or flowers your kids want to grow and involve them in gardening projects. * Dig through your garage for neglected toys and games. Or make your own games, like jump rope, cornhole or horseshoes, using household items.

Take a trip down memory lane Scour your memory and ask grandparents about outdoor games from when they were children.

Have grandparents explain how to play their games via phone or FaceTime. Then, video kids playing the games for the whole family to share!

Spending time together, outside or in, creates special memories your kids will treasure as they grow up - making all your efforts worthwhile.

Zona Wyyerd Cutest Pet Cutest pet winner: Story of survival and friendship

With all of us doing our part to stay safe, healthy and distanced, one companion has been very happy to have the extra friends at home; our pets! Zona Wyyerd, home of the fastest fiber in the west, reached out to customers asking to share their cute pets for a chance to win a new Roku device - a device that helps cut the cable and stream TV stations over the internet - over a $100 value for the winner.

The contest garnered nearly 80 submissions mostly dogs that, in categories, included cute, cuddly, fluffy, sleepy, long hair, short hair, and even cats with no hair! There were many sizes big and small, and ages ranged from puppy to elder. The team at Zona Wyyerd judged the contest and narrowed it down to 10 finalists.

Bailey, a German Shepard ended up at a kill shelter not too long ago. Her owner, Mary Dunnill rescued her the day she was to be put down. Mary took Bailey home and

found a new companion and friend that has brought her life so much joy. Mary entered the pet contest to share her cutie, not thinking this football-fetching girl would win, but to share her love for Bailey. When Mary arrived to pick up her prize, the team at Zona Wyyerd were gifted with her rescue story, and her gratitude for helping highlight this incredible story of serendipity that brought the two friends together.

According to the Arizona Humane Society, dog and cat adoptions have dropped dramatically during the pandemic, and they could use your help finding homes for pets. Spiritual Thoughts

Hello Vistancia!

My family and I are looking forward to joining you as residents of this wonderful community.

I have heard about the wonderful events the Vistancia HOA hosts and I cannot wait to get involved! My family which includes, 6 year old boy/girl twins, is also looking forward to the warmth, the pools, the trails, and the community parks!

What is your favorite way to spend time with your loved ones and friends? I imagine it has been a little different since the Covid-19 pandemic and quarantine. While my family has enjoyed the change of pace, and the extra time together, we miss our “village.” What ways have you stayed connected? We love video calling friends and family members and use “getting

outside” as a great excuse to connect to new and old friends as we hike and play together.

Our online worship services have also helped me stay connected to my community of faith, and to continue to make God a priority in my life.

Moving in the middle of a pandemic has certainly been different. It has been hard to say “goodbye.” It is also hard getting to know our new community. All I really want to do is host a smoothie party or game night at our new home in Acacia Grove to meet everyone.

It can also be a challenge to meet the needs of our communities. Now we have to think about how to do it in new, safe ways. Suddenly, there are more of us who are in need. There are those of us who are lonely, those of us who are afraid we might contract Covid 19, those of us who have lost work and income due to quarantine closures. How do we comfort, assist and care for our community now? We have so many beautiful reminders of God’s promise to be with us, and reminders that God will equip us. One of my favorites is from John 21: “Jesus said to him the third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?”

And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.”

We live into God’s love when we love one another. Reach out. Write a letter, give a call, shop for someone who can’t go out freely. Find a new way to comfort, assist and care. And if you need comfort or care, reach out to someone. You are loved.

Our Town Brush Fire Awareness

We all know the adage of “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” and we all know, that too often fire is preventable. With Independence Day upon us, it is a good opportunity to remember that brush fire season is here and there are things we can do to help prevent them.

Peoria’s population has continued to grow in the north as residents seek to enjoy the beautiful desert landscapes that make Peoria such an amazing place to live. This growth has created an extremely complex yet beautiful landscape that is known as the wildland-urban interface.

Neighborhoods that share these areas with wildlife, recreation and nature are put at risk during a brush or wildland fire.

The good news is that these fires are preventable. You can reduce the possibility of a wildfire loss by following a few simple steps: · Move firewood and dense vegetation at least 30 feet away from your house. · Remove flammable plants that contain resins, oils, and waxes at least 30 feet away from your house. · When planting, choose plants with high moisture content. They are more fire resistant

than others and can slow a wildfire’s spread. · Trees and shrubs should be well-spaced, watered and pruned. Remove dead or lowhanging branches. · Pack out what you pack in if you head into our desert areas. · If driving off-road stay on existing trails; better yet use one of the off-road recreation areas that are close to Peoria. · Make sure all campfires are completely out and cool to the touch before leaving. · Follow all fire ban and restriction notices.

By working together, we can make Peoria a fire safe city this summer. If you see a possible fire hazard involving weeds and debris in Peoria please report it to the City Code Compliance team at 623-773-7226. They will contact the property owner to take care of the problem.

In addition, consumer fireworks can be used from June 24 – July 6. However, fireworks cannot be used on city property, including parks, streets and sidewalks. When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.”

There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown.

•

The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. It also allows for advertisers to re-position a brand or introduce a new product.

• Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times.

•

Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, which can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession.

• When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current – and possibly future – sales.

An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.”

An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits.

Another strategy used by marketers is changing the ad message and using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. Some advertisers will offer interest-free loans, coupons or special promotions to boost sales and market share. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return. For some advertisers that don’t give cost incentives, they can change the ad message to being expensive but worth it.

Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides.

Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/ or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share.

Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.”
