From Me To You...

I don’t know if you dream, or if you remember those dreams but I have very vivid dreams which I usually remember. Every night I go to sleep thinking what will my next dream be?

Sometimes I dream of things that have been bothering me during the day, sometimes I find a solution to something I have been pondering, sometimes my dreams are just random and erratic.

For example there was this one time when I was a child, probably about 16, and it was the night before a big exam (similar to the SATs). I fell asleep and dreamed that I was potato, baking in the oven. I was warm and comfy, quite content to be there, and then I heard a ‘ding’.

“Oh!” I thought, “Time to turn over and bake the other side!” So I turned over. Then a couple of minutes later I thought, “Hold on, that was the alarm. I have to get-up-and-go to school!” and this is where it gets really weird because at that point I remember thinking, “Don’t be silly Catherine, potatoes don’t go to school!” and went back to sleep.

For those of you that are concerned about the exam, my mother did come in and wake me up so I was actually able to go to school on time and take the exam, but this just goes to show how crazy my dreams can be.

Many times I dream I am driving and the brakes don’t work properly. I can slow down, but never come to a complete stop no matter how hard I push on the pedal. People who believe in dream interpretation would say I am worried that I am not in control of something in my life. That could be true, I have 4 kids, a husband, two unruly dogs, family who live far away, and a business we run from home.

Many people report dreams of flying. That sounds like fun, but sadly I have never had that dream. Apparently that one means you feel in control of your life, so I get why I don’t dream I am soaring over Arizona. Anyone dream of showing up at school or work naked? That one is always jarring.

Here is another one that is much more recent and pertinent. Last night, in my dream, I was sitting in a parked car waiting for my husband to come out of Safeway. As I watched, a woman opened the trunk of the car opposite me, climbed in, and shut herself inside. A different woman was singing hymns and praying loudly beside the car.

It doesn’t seem too hard to figure out what that means. Anyone else drawing parallels to the current situation of us shutting ourselves inside with others praying for our safety?

Dreams are so important now, the dream of a world where we can gather with friends and family safely, the dream of going to a movie, and the dream of letting our children attend school again. I dream that we will get back to that world, perhaps not quite as easily or in such a carefree way, but in a new way. Let’s hope that dreams can come true.

On Our Cover Although Trilogy at Vistancia resident Ruth Rotkowitz has been a freelance writer for many years, the novel ESCAPING THE WHALE, is her first published book. The novel’s protagonist, Marcia Gold, is a daughter of Jewish Holocaust survivors, and the reader follows Marcia as she attempts to lead a “normal” life in 1980 Brooklyn, New York. She thrives in her job as a high school guidance counselor specializing in pregnant teens, and she also has a handsome, successful boyfriend. According to family and friends, she has it all.

All is not as it seems, however, for Marcia is plagued by fears and delusions, which she conceals from everyone. She suffers from her legacy of inherited trauma, and is mortified by her symptoms. A series of crises at the high school, combined with the atmosphere of tension sparked by the Iranian hostage situation, drive Marcia to a breaking point and she can no longer keep up her façade. Once her world explodes, Marcia realizes she must face her problems and take action on her own behalf.

Ms. Rotkowitz has spent years experiencing, observing, and researching the lives of children of survivors. When she realized that Holocaust literature largely neglects the issues of the second generation, she was inspired to draw on her own knowledge and write about it. In the past, she has published fiction, nonfiction, and poetry in anthologies and literary journals, and spent several years as a staff writer and member of the editorial board of the Woman’s Newspaper of Princeton. However, she feels that this book was always inside her, waiting to come out. The reaction has been heartwarming to her, for she has been hearing from survivors of all types of traumas, who insist that the book speaks to them, and from psychologists, who marvel at the accuracy of the book’s depiction of Marcia’s mind.

Prior to moving to Arizona ten years ago with her husband, Ms. Rotkowitz resided in New Jersey and New York, where she was born to refugees from Vienna, Austria. She worked as a college and high school English teacher, and currently nurtures the teacher in her by volunteering with the Phoenix Holocaust Association, leading talks in the area about Holocaust-related books and programs that the Association sponsors.

Mental Health How to know when somebody needs help

Have you ever felt stressed more than normal?

Or had racing thoughts keep you up at night?

If you answered yes to one of these questions, I have good news… you’re human! Every person deals with different stressors all throughout life whether it is presenting a project via video conference for work or addressing a problem in a personal relationship.

While everybody reacts to stress in different ways, it is important to know there is a difference between the stress we may feel in our everyday lives such as meeting a deadline at work and the stress that lingers long after the deadline has been met.

Just as you maintain a regular diet and exercise to keep your body healthy, your mind requires

some medical attention as well. When it comes to mental health, some of the issues that can arise include depression, anxiety and addiction. Sometimes stress doesn’t go away once the problem is gone. But if that happens, what should you do? And how can you tell if somebody you love is in need of mental health support?

The signs and symptoms of mental health issues can look very different depending on the person and the condition. If you suspect a loved one is dealing with mental health issues, it may be a good idea to assess some of their emotions. Ask yourself: • Does (s)he feel sad or irritated for long periods of time?

• Does (s)he worry and consistently talk about fears?

• How often have I experienced his/her mood swings?

• Is (s)he having troubles understanding or focusing?

Also, take some time to evaluate his/her recent behavior. Ask yourself: Has there been any change in the way (s)he eats?

Have I noticed a change in behavior that is angry or violent?

Is (s)he tired or does (s)he have low energy?

Does (s)he seem intoxicated or act out of character?

Even if you try to keep to a healthy diet and work out regularly, chances are there are times of day when your energy fades, or entire days when you just don’t feel like you’re on the right track.

Between the constant demands on your time from work and family, it can be tough to stay energized all day long.

Here are some easy tips for ways to boost your energy and add more pep to your step, throughout your day.

1. Protein-up your breakfast You probably know you shouldn’t skip breakfast, and many of us have to eat it on the go, but there’s more you can do - your energy level will thank you later if you add more protein to the first meal of the day. * Fix a quick omelet or scrambled eggs * Add 1-2 servings of Egg Whites to your smoothie or protein shake * Try this recipe for Strawberry Protein Pancakes, which your whole family can enjoy: Ingredients 1 scoop vanilla protein powder 1/2 cup old fashioned oats 1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce 1/3 cup Egg Whites 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 cup fresh or frozen strawberries, chopped

Instructions Blend everything except the strawberries together, until there are no remaining chunks. Set chopped strawberries aside. Heat a nonstick pan to medium high (a large or pancake pan works best). Pour batter onto the pan in small circular shapes, then sprinkle chopped strawberries on each pancake. When the pancakes start to bubble, flip and cook the other side. Top with more strawberries, low-sugar maple syrup, Greek yogurt or whatever calorie-conscious topping you like!

2. Plan ahead Pack protein-rich snacks to bring with you on the go, so you have healthy options handy to give you a quick pickme-up throughout your day, especially when you feel your energy is fading. Small snacks throughout the day won’t make you feel sleepy the way a large meal can. * Nuts with little or no added salt or oil * Low-fat cheese * Meat sticks * Greek yogurt without added sugar 3. Stay hydrated Often energy levels can drop when you’re dehydrated. Be proactive to keep yourself ready for anything. * Bring along a reusable water bottle to sip throughout the day. * Pack a protein smoothie or shake for lunch to prevent the dreaded afternoon slump.

Health Care Power of Attorney The medical healthcare power of attorney identifies an agent, such as a trusted family member or friend, who can give consent to medical treatment if you cannot. If insurance requires transfer to a skilled nursing facility before going home from the hospital, your agent can arrange that for you.

Different from other states, the Arizona allows you to authorize your health care agent to follow your instructions for burial or cremation.

Otherwise, when there is no surviving spouse, all of the children or other family members may have to be consulted.

Another difference from other states is the mental healthcare power of attorney which helps avoid costly court intervention when

there is mental illness, brain injury, dementia or Alzheimer’s.

If a person does not have these healthcare powers of attorney, the court must give authority to act. An attorney is needed for the patient and a different attorney for the petitioner. After a court investigation, a hearing is held in open court—in about 45 days after a petition is filed.

Not driving as often right now? Here’s how to keep your car fresh During a season that’s usually devoted to adventure, many of us have been forced to stick a little closer to home. When it’s finally time to return to our globetrotting ways, it’s vital to make sure our vehicles are ready. That means taking active steps now, while our cars are mostly idle.

How do we make sure they’re in top shape for the journeys to come? There’s no one better to ask than Charles, the Humble Mechanic, whose YouTube tips have helped millions get the most out of their vehicles.

Get charged up If you’re charged up for adventure, we don’t blame you. As we wait for the pathway to become clearer, Charles notes it’s important for our batteries to stay charged, too.

“Things like big temperature swings and not being driven for extended periods of time cause extra strain on the vehicle battery,” he says. “With the average life span of a vehicle battery being three to five years, we want to do everything we can to keep it healthy.”

The key to getting your battery in gear? Using it regularly will keep it charged. Other tips include making sure your car is locked - so all computer systems know to sleep - and unplugging items from your cigarette lighter.

Be entirely confident Tires are your car’s only safety device that touches the road. While you wait to head back onto the highway for an extended trip, make sure they’re in excellent working order. There’s a danger to look out for if your car has been sitting for a long time: flat-spotting, or isolated flattening in parts of the tire that are in contact with the ground. The easiest fix: driving your car at least once each week.

Use the penny test to check tread depth, and use a tire pressure gauge to ensure they’re properly inflated - you can typically find your car’s recommended psi level inside the driver’s side door jamb or owner manual.

Embrace the fluid situation Check your dipstick to make sure your oil is at the right level. Check the other fluids while you’re at it, seeking out a dealer for help with tougher-to-measure fluids.

Keep your motor running “Cars are meant to be driven,” says Charles.

“Cars with high miles always seem to have fewer issues than cars that were barely driven. I take my cars for a cruise every 10-14 days. This gets the tires up to temperature and rolling, the fluids circulating, and the battery charged. Windows down and radio up is also good to clear the brain.”

Here’s to recharging now, so we’re ready for the days when the journey is beautiful once again.

Spiritual Thoughts Changes and New Normals “I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.” (Ephesians 1:17) I pray as I write these articles. I pray you are receptive to what God wants you to take away from the words. I pray that if I have communicated anything misleading, that you will not receive it, that you hear God’s message.

This is my final article. I am incredibly grateful to Estrella Publishing, specifically Catherine and Al Uretsky, for giving me the opportunity to write for the Mountain View Magazine these past years. I am retiring June 30 from serving as pastor of Spirit Song UMF meeting in Vistancia.

Life is changing for me and for Spirit Song. Life is also changing for a wonderful incoming pastor, her husband, son and daughter. Rev. Misty Howick is wrapping up her service at Prescott UMC and moving here to the valley to serve Spirit Song beginning July 1. Please hold her in prayer.

What changes do you face? Likely your ‘normal’ routine has been greatly disrupted in this time of self-isolation and restricted gatherings due to Covid-19 virus. It is easy in times like these to let circumstances dictate what we do and to slip into a routine that may not be well thought out. Take time to consider your new normal. Is it directed

by God’s wisdom?

Changing can be good. It opens us to new perspectives and new ideas. I am facing change with my retirement. The church is facing a pastoral change. Rev. Misty is going through change with her move to a new church. Change of routine can be renewing and invigorating.

Stepping out of the usual and into a new normal or a new challenge can bring inspiration and motivation. I pray that for Spirit Song and Rev. Misty. I pray it for you.

Look for what God is doing in your new normal.

Ask for the Spirit of wisdom. And be open to God’s leading in your life.

May you be blessed with the Spirit of revelation and grow to know God better especially during change!

When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.”

There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown.

•

The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. It also allows for advertisers to re-position a brand or introduce a new product.

• Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times.

•

Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, which can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession.

• When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current – and possibly future – sales.

An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.”

An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits.

Another strategy used by marketers is changing the ad message and using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. Some advertisers will offer interest-free loans, coupons or special promotions to boost sales and market share. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return. For some advertisers that don’t give cost incentives, they can change the ad message to being expensive but worth it.

Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides.

Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/ or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share.

Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.”
