From Me To You... We are at a new stage in our lives, we have finally arrived at our Empty Nest. It feels like an amazing achievement to be honest. I have had the responsibility of raising children since 1988 (with one year off for good behavior) and I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I am so proud of the adults we have raised who are leading their lives and forging their own paths. But before I can truly hand off all responsibility, I have to get the last two to the finish line - graduation and college. I just wound up two sets of final college tours, and let me tell you, I learned a few interesting things along the way. Not about college or even raising children. About the Wonderful World of Travel. That is what my life has become of late. From Mom to travel agent in one easy step. Between scouring the internet for airfares, arranging hotel accommodation, and transportation at the college, I have barely had time to catch my breath. I did discover a way to save money on flights in the process. I was searching for cheap flights from Phoenix to Pullman, Washington. I know the

normal routes and airlines that service them, but during my search a new option popped up. I didn’t want to book with the cut-rate site that had the deal, but they did show me how to get my son from here to Pullman in less time, and saved me $300 in the process - book separate tickets through two different airlines! That moment when I had purchased the first fare and was trying to secure a seat on the next one gave me chills, but it all worked out in the end. He made it there and is on his way back as I write this. This was his first solo adventure and although I was nervous that something would go wrong, he navigated it with ease. He even got to play in the snow, in April... The upside of that experience is that I know he is going to be just fine on his own, and that eases the transition into the next stage of our lives. But is it truly an empty nest? Not really, they are all still there with us, we just have to loosen the reins and let them do it on their own from here. Allergies

If you have or suspect you have seasonal allergies, there are many ways you can address your symptoms. Take stock of your environment and learn how to relieve indoor and outdoor allergy symptoms. Below are some tips to help you manage your spring allergy triggers. 1. Wear protective clothing When you spend time outdoors, make sure to wear pants, long-sleeve shirts and hats help keep pollen off your skin and out of your hair. Make sure to wear a pair of sunglasses to keep pollen out of your eyes. Finally, when you’re ready to go back indoors, take off your shoes to minimize outdoor allergens coming into your home. 2. Use an antihistamine Allergy medications like over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamines can help relieve allergy symptoms. While there are many allergy medications, a 24-hour antihistamine taken once daily can be

You Deserve to be Comfortable

incredibly effective in managing allergies during the day. 3. Shower Showering, or at the very least rinsing off after spending time outside, can help manage allergens. Even with protective clothing, pollen and other allergens can get stuck on your hair and skin. Rinsing off any pollen can also reduce the number of outdoor allergens that make it indoors. 4. Change your clothes and stay on top of your laundry Once you finish showering or rinsing off, make sure to change into a fresh set of clothes. Avoid putting clothes you’ve just worn outside back in the closet and try to do laundry at least twice a week. When your laundry is dry, clean the dryer lint trap after every load to eliminate any lingering allergens. 5. Use a nasal spray If you are in need of 24-hour continuous relief from nasal allergy congestion, Nasacort is a nondrowsy nasal spray with no scent or harsh taste. 6. Use an air purifier Any remaining pollen that may have snuck into the home will stay suspended in the air. Using an air purifier can remove airborne pollen, dust and other irritants from your indoor air so you can breathe easily at home. Keep an eye on the filter and regularly clean it of any trapped allergens. By using these tips, you can reduce your exposure to allergens and manage your allergies so you can enjoy the outdoors again.

Legal Advice NON-STRESS ESTATE PLANNING

Estate planning does not need to be complex or confusing. You deserve to have your questions answered and have documents that help you when you need it most. On-line services and computer forms simply do not address the variety of issues that might arise.

– whether it be for finances; medical health or mental health. Inheritances for minors, whether children or grandchildren, can be bogged down by a court conservatorship, if a trust is not used. A court conservatorship is more costly and burdensome than a probate. A good estate plan provides centralized management for your assets whether you are incapacitated or upon your death and can avoid obstacles and disputes when there are multiple disputes.

The court process of probate can be avoided with a revocable trust for some but others can utilize a beneficiary deed with more ease.

F.A.S.T.

Did you know that stroke has no age limits, and younger adults are increasingly affected by stroke and its risk factors? Strokes happen when blood supply to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. In either case, parts of the brain become damaged or die. Every minute counts when a stroke is suspected. May is National Stroke Awareness Month, when health care professionals remind the public that understanding the signs of stroke are key to getting care. Stroke affects about 800,000 people in the U.S. each year. Thankfully, residents of the West Valley have a Primary Plus Stroke Center nearby at Abrazo West Campus in Goodyear. Risk factors commonly associated in older adults, such as hypertension, diabetes, tobacco use and obesity are now being seen in younger stroke patients, according to Amanda Rowell,

MPH, BSN, PCCN, SCRN, RN, Stroke Program Coordinator at Abrazo West Campus. More than 87 percent of strokes in the U.S. are ischemic strokes, caused by a clot that cuts off blood flow to a part of the brain. These types of strokes are largely treatable if a patient gets to a hospital in time. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers a simple test to act FAST if you think someone may be having a stroke: Face – ask the person to smile, does one side of the face droop? Arms – can the person raise both arms? Does one arm drift downward? Speech – ask the person to repeat a simple phrase, is the speech slurred or strange? Time – if you see any of these signs, call 911 right away. Also, note the time when the symptoms first appear, this helps health care providers determine the type of treatment needed. Caregiving Myths The number of baby boomers, a demographic with 52 million people who are 65 and older, is projected to double by 2060. Many from this group will want to stay in their homes. In fact, a recent AARP study from November 2021 finds that 77% of older adults want to remain in their homes for the long term. That’s where caregivers come in. They can help seniors gain independence, not lose it. This article busts some myths about caregivers that may be keeping some people from a rewarding profession. Myth #1: You need a medical background to be a caregiver. Not true. All you need is a caring heart. Look at this list of people well suited to a caregiving career: Myth #2: I am a caregiver only if I care for a family member or someone who lives with me. Caregivers come from different walks of life. Some are teachers taking on caregiving as a part-time way to give back. Some caregivers are retired or semi-retired, offering their unique skills to help older adults with limitations stay in their homes and communities. Some are just starting

12 Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

out in their careers. Some work full time as caregivers. Myth #3: Caregiving can be too challenging or timeconsuming. Whatever your expertise, you can offer customized services to meet the needs of seniors or other adults in need of assistance within a flexible schedule. The rewards are as tangible for the caregiver as they are for the person receiving care.

Myth #4: Caregiving is viewed as negative at a time when someone is losing independence. Think of caregiving as a way to help people keep their independence. Aging doesn’t have to mean seniors have to stop living. Caregiving allows older adults to thrive. By 2030 the boomer population will outnumber children. The need for caregivers has never been higher, nor more rewarding. In addition to making clients’ lives brighter, safer and more enjoyable, caregivers deliver the companionship, inspiration and happiness people deserve.
