From Me To You...

Things I will miss when we get back to ‘normal’.

My family at home. When this lockdown started, my adult child came home from college, my high school child stayed home from school and my other adult child had just moved home to save money and get back on her feet. At first it was tense and fraught with bickering. Then things settled down. We play games together, laugh together, tease each other in a loving way and are genuinely creating a new relationship of peers. This would not have happened without having to live together for an extended period of time. And for that I am grateful.

Time off from working out. Before Corona (BC) my husband and I had been working out quite seriously for 18 months and if I have to be honest I was reluctantly enjoying it and the health benefits that ensued. Since lockdown we really have not been successful at staying on track and I have come to enjoy the relaxation and lack of guilt from missing a workout or two. And for that I am grateful.

Figuratively tightening our belts. (See last paragraph.) The necessity of spending less at this time, plus the forced inability to go out and spend as we used to, is liberating. I am frugal at heart as I was raised with a ‘make do with what you have’ attitude. Teaching my children that at this time has also been a good life lesson. Changing the Amazon password helped

tremendously with that one.

And for that I am grateful.

The beauty of our planet that is being revealed. After only a few weeks we saw nature returning to our congested cities. Dolphins in Venice, seals scattered along coastlines usually crowded with tourists, goats taking over a Welsh town and record numbers of turtles hatching on beaches. The most stunning image I have seen recently was the blue skies over the Taj Mahal. A before and after shot of the grey smog compared to the sun shining on such a beautiful building shocked me. And for that I am grateful.

Renewed contact with relatives near and far.

Once a week we Zoom with family on the East Coast. That was an interesting one. As with my children, reconnecting on a regular basis has been challenging. I remember why I love them and also the things that irked me about them.

At least there is a mute button when we need a break. And for that I am grateful.

Hugs. When I first came to America I found the practice of hugging invasive and intrusive. In England a polite nod or firm handshake is all that is required in almost any social setting. But not here. The first time you meet someone a hug could be involved. Step back to put some distance between you and the newcomer and you can be seen as cold and unwelcoming.

Navigating the social requirements was always intimidating. Not anymore. Now I look forward to the act of reassuring someone with my presence, a hug can say so much more that a polite handshake. And for that I have learned to be grateful.

I know we will return to our old ways soon enough and life will, indeed go on. Let us all try to be grateful for the lessons we have learned.

Family Caregivers AARP offers guidance to family caregivers with vulnerable family members, especially those who might be new to caregiving because of Coronavirus.

Make it a team effort Create a list with contact information of friends, family and services in your community that can help you perform key caregiving tasks.

For example, find out if services such as Meals on Wheels can help deliver meals, or if there are other local services to help with food or medication delivery.

Inventory essential items Inventory how much food, medication and basic supplies the person you’re caring for has currently. If possible, help them have a two-week supply of food, water, house cleaning supplies, and medical equipment.

Get medications in order Create a list of medications, medical contacts, and important information like allergies for easy access. If there are upcoming non-emergency

medical appointments, reschedule those or, if possible, switch to a virtual visit to receive telemedicine.

Ask your pharmacist or health care provider if you’re able to have an extra 30day supply of essential medications on hand.

Stay connected Current social distancing recommendations will impact many older individuals. To keep connections strong, set up communication using a variety of technology such as FaceTime or Skype, or simply phone and text. Use these to stay connected with your caregiving team as well as your older or aging family members. If your loved one lives in a long-term care facility, see if they have accommodations for online visits and how they plan to communicate with families.

Send in cards, letters, magazines, puzzles or other items you know your loved one would be grateful to receive. T Maintain personal safety and self-care While you are likely very focused on the person you’re caring for, it is essential to also care for yourself.

Peoria 411

The past few months have been a difficult time for the nation, our neighborhood businesses and the community. The increase of social distancing has been a difficult, but necessary step toward a healthier future. At a local level, I particularly miss interacting with you, my constituents. The spontaneous conversations in the grocery isle, seeing our kids participate in friendly competition, or sharing ideas over a cup of coffee – small interactions we so often take for granted.

While I hold onto the hope that we can return to “normal” soon, I encourage you to stay connected with me through my weekly e-newsletter or follow the Mesquite District Facebook page. Small Business Support As the community works through the economic impacts of COVID-19, the city recognizes that small businesses are going through some very real and unique challenges. We are fortunate to have amazing local agencies, like the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and ASU Peoria Forward.

In collaboration with these great partners, the city of Peoria has launched a Small Business Task Force to provide immediate outreach and support to Peoria businesses impacted by the pandemic. These programs directly serve Peoria small business owners and can help with everything from business automation, creative marketing strategies and navigating the process of small business loans and grants.

to help restaurants promote their services to residents by providing a free 4’ x 4’ banner to any restaurant who requests one. With two banner options, restaurants have the flexibility to choose a message that best fits their business, “pick-up available” or “delivery and pickup available.” These banners continue to be delivered to businesses and I encourage any restaurant owner who has not received one to please reach out. This grassroots effort is an opportunity for the community to come together and support local business owners during their time of need.

In an effort to provide residents with updated information, the city has updated its webpage to include an abundance of information and resources. Citywide updates, department information, federal and state resources and more are all available at peoriaaz.gov/covid19.

Local business owners are also encouraged to visit peoriaaz.gov/business to learn more about resources available for their company.

Beneficiary Deeds A Beneficiary Deed in essence is a “pay on death designation” for real property. It is very useful if you want to leave your house or other real estate to one or two persons upon our death. A Beneficiary Deed avoids probate without giving up any present ownership interest in the property like joint tenants with right of survivorship does.

The Beneficiary Deed is fully revocable. Where there are co-owners, the surviving owner can revoke the Beneficiary Deed.

The owner retains control. The owner does not need to consult the beneficiaries or be concerned about the beneficiaries’ creditors (unlike joint tenants).

The Beneficiary Deed is a great tool for people who have all other assets in accounts that

have a “pay on death” designation of some type.

The Beneficiary Deed is not a good tool if you want to leave your real property to more than two people, to minors or to adults with special needs receiving government assistance. In those instances, a trust should be used.

Pet Of The Month

Here’s my 1 year old, chocolate lab mix, Cap (aka Capone - I’m a fan of Italian / mafia movies LOL).

I adopted him in Nov 2019 from Ghost Town Dog Rescue in Mesa and he has brought nothing but laughs, love and a full heart to me (and my neighbors!) every, singe day. He’s the sweetest, most loving pup - both with people and dogs - and just loves life to the fullest every day. His favorite hobbies are basking in the sun, chasing bugs, playing fetch, and eating my shrubs down to a nub (lucky for him, I have plans of redoing my landscaping). LOL Hope you’re staying healthy & safe through this crazy time!

Spiritual Thoughts

Worry

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life…” (Matthew 6:25) The Bible has a lot to say about worry. Worry is a challenge for all of us. The most common worries are around finances, job security, relationships, and health. The Covid-19 crisis contributes to all those. Everyone struggles with these worries.

Maybe it comforts you to know you aren’t the only one.

Worry can be helpful, and it can be very harmful.

Worry can keep us on our toes. If we are worried about a test or an interview, we are more likely to prepare carefully. If we are worried about the virus, we’ll be more careful about social distancing, wearing a mask, and washing our hands. If we are concerned about sun exposure, we’ll use sunscreen or cover up. If we are worried about keeping our job, we’ll be more conscientious. If a relationship is a concern, we’ll try to listen better and be more attentive. Worry can motivate us to be proactive in preventing the

negative outcome of our worry.

However, worry can also consume us, make it hard to concentrate, and steal our joy. If left unchecked, it can lead to deep anxiety. If you recognize that worrying is endangering your state of mind and health, seek help from a professional who can guide you in better managing or even redirecting your worry in healthy ways. This can even be done via zoom in these days of self-isolation. Not only will you benefit, but all those you interact with will benefit.

The Bible includes these verses: “Why do you worry about what you wear?” “Do not worry about tomorrow.” “Do not worry about what to say or how to say it.” “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” God knows we tend to worry. He has a better way.

God invites us to lean into his presence, guidance and comfort. He is our creator and wants the best for us. Turn to God with your concerns through prayer and praise. When we recognize that God walks with us through the challenges, even this virus, we find peace. We can cooperate with the worry prompts, i.e. stay in isolation, pay the bills before pleasure purchases, and think before speaking. Then we learn to trust God with those things we cannot control.

Prayer is a wonderful gift. Asking for God’s presence and hope can increase our sense of peace and joy.

Connect with a church, read your Bible and learn more about prayer.

May you know deep peace in our Risen Savior.

When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.”

There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown.

•

The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. It also allows for advertisers to re-position a brand or introduce a new product.

• Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times.

•

Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, which can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession.

• When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current – and possibly future – sales.

An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.”

An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits.

Another strategy used by marketers is changing the ad message and using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. Some advertisers will offer interest-free loans, coupons or special promotions to boost sales and market share. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return. For some advertisers that don’t give cost incentives, they can change the ad message to being expensive but worth it.

Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides.

Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/ or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share.

Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.”
