From Me To You...

There is something about a front porch that has always called to me. A place to sit and sip, take in the world and let the neighborhood get acquainted with you. It screams Americana to me. One of the iconic things about this country that I was quite surprised did not exist as much as I had thought.

I always imagined that when I bought a house it would have a front porch, complete with a swing, comfy cushions, a flag waving proudly on a pole, a dog curled up at my feet while I sipped coffee and waved my children off to school in the morning. None of that ever happened. Except the coffee - I have sipped a lot of coffee in the mornings as I scrambled through the chaos that is getting children ready for school.

Back to the iconic image idea. As a foreigner moving to this country I imagined many things that I would find. The vastness of the country that one is very true - this country is bigger than some continents. As a young adult I travelled across country by Amtrak. If you ever have the chance, travelling by rail is a wonderful way to

see and appreciate this beautiful country. Its states are as different as countries and are worth taking the time to visit.

Opportunity is another iconic ideal that many people come here for, streets not quite paved with gold but at least the ability to find your place and do well if you try hard. To some extent that is true, I have done well and it was due to a lot of hard work, but that is changing for our children. Despite their endeavors and opportunity the sheer cost of everything is holding them back. Many young adults are either foregoing college because of the cost, or if they do go they are crippled with debt that they will most likely carry well into their 50’s. Families are forced to welcome their offspring back into their homes so they can survive. Not the image I carried in my backpack 27 years ago when I first landed at JFK. Then we moved west. Into the Wild Wild West land of cowboys and rugged desert. Surprisingly there were more front porches out here than I expected, still not at my house though...

I had heard that there were Coyotes and Roadrunners to be found out here. Images of large brightly colored creatures zooming around dodging cunning animals wielding TNT danced through my head. Imagine my surprise to see the diminutive brown bird scurrying across the street one morning without a Meep-Meep to be heard. That was a Roadrunner? Wow, sadly disappointing. Now the coyotes, those I have found to be as wiley and scrawny as in the cartoons, but thankfully with less access to explosives.

It’s easy to accumulate a lot of things throughout your life. From clothes and household goods to antiques and treasured keepsakes, decades of living often means decades of stuff. When you get to a certain age, it can be smart to start downsizing your belongings.

Peace On Earth New Beginnings

need to rise toward the light of the sun.

There was lush new green grass growing in the sand and the rocks were scoured clean. Just weeks after the flood, the evidence of the raging waters were being erased and new life was emerging.

I was recently in Sedona and walked along Oak Creek looking for evidence of the recent flooding.

It was fascinating to look up at debris caught in tree branches and mud lines over my head and realize just how high the flood waters had been.

Yet, at the same time, the shores on both sides looked surprisingly normal.

This is what God does for us. We too get caught up in ‘flood waters’ and confusion and disruption.

Yet, God walks with us through those times. He is our concrete or metal pillar. He is our grounding in the bedrock. He brings about the new thing in us as the waters subside and our lives are restored.

There were two metal benches placed about 20 feet back from the creek. These were rooted deep into the bedrock. Because sand had washed away, the seat of one bench was now several feet above the ground and my feet barely touched. Sand had washed in under the second bench and the seat was just a few inches about the ground. Yet, as the ground shifted under the benches, they had remained rooted.

We never go back to ‘the way it was.’ We live in ‘new normals,’ ‘new beginnings.’ Like a new baseball mitt that feels stiff and inflexible or new shoes that feel overly snug, our new normals are not comfortable right away. Yet, like the glove and the shoes that become more comfortable, our new normal becomes more familiar and comfortable and we begin to see the blessings of God.

There were several homes along the creek built on concrete or metal posts, again grounded in bedrock. When the waters rose, the pillars supported the homes high above the water and held firmly. The only evidence of the flood on these structures was the mud line on the pillars above the ground.

“This is what the Lord said…‘When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.’” (Isaiah 43:1-2) We will face ‘floods’ and challenges.

But we do not walk through them alone. God is our faithful companion leading, guiding, and comforting us. May you know God’s peace in your life challenge.

Yum Yum!

Recipes have evolved over the years to include different ingredients and fun variations, such as adding in nuts, chocolate chips and flavoring like almond and vanilla. What better reason to bake this classic recipe for your friends and family?

Chiquita Banana Nut Bread Ingredients: 4 ripe Chiquita bananas 3 eggs 1 cup almond flour/spelt flour 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup 1/4 cup pecans 1/4 cup walnuts 2 tablespoons baking powder 2 tablespoons ginger powder 1 teaspoon vanilla powder 2 tablespoons cinnamon 1 can coconut milk (13.5 fl. oz.)

1 tablespoon honey 1 teaspoon vanilla powder

Directions: Puree 3 bananas with a hand mixer. Scoop the bananas into a big bowl.

Chop nuts coarsely. Now add all other ingredients and mix thoroughly.

Pour batter into greased pan. Cut the fourth banana lengthwise in half and place the slices on top of the batter.

Bake loaf for about 45 minutes in oven.

The night before, put the coconut milk in the fridge (to separate fluid from cream).

Scoop only the top layer of cream from the can into a big bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 teaspoon of vanilla and mix it until you get a smooth mixture. Serve with the loaf.

Family Traditions While modern mobility may mean that distance keeps members of a family apart, more - and younger - members of many families across the country are finding significance in their heritage, and making it come alive in their own ways. Special family and cultural traditions can strengthen family bonds, provide a sense of belonging and connect the present day to a richer history. Whether tied to holidays or unique meaningful moments, gathering in together helps a family have fun and create new memories.

1. Identify your family’s origins and cultural heritage. Water Safety Two children die every day due to drowning, and according to a study from the National SAFE KIDS Campaign, 88 percent of children who drown do so while under adult supervision. Many don’t realize that drowning can occur quietly, with no overt signs that the child is in trouble.

Supervising children vigilantly and creating barriers to accessing water unexpectedly are the first steps in averting a tragedy. Teaching children how to be safe in and around water is one of the most important life skills parents can give their children. In fact, research shows that participation in formal water safety and swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning among children 1 to 4 years of age.

Lindsay Mondick, Senior Manager of Aquatics at YMCA of the USA (Y-USA) offers important safety tips to protect your children from harm around water, whether it’s in the bathtub, at the beach or in a pool.

Never swim alone. Nobody should swim by themselves, in case of accident. Teach your children that they should never enter the water anywhere without a lifeguard and/or responsible caregiver attending them.

Stay attentive and watch without distraction. If

you’re with a large group, or even if a lifeguard is present, designate one person to watch the child or children at all times. If children are in a pool or near a body of water, a caregiver needs to be close, paying full attention and not distracted by a phone or other diversions.

Wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets. Children and adolescents must wear appropriately sized and weighted life jackets in or around watercraft. It’s important to understand that not all life jackets are Coast Guard approved.

Adults can check this feature by looking at the tag on the inside of the jacket. Non-swimmers and small children should always wear life jackets when near water and while swimming.

Adults should also wear them to model safe behavior.

Don’t practice holding your breath under water.

Children should not have breath-holding contests or participate in underwater swimming challenges that could risk their lives.

Learn CPR. When seconds count, bystanders may be the first to help, so learning CPR may save a life. If you were CPR certified years ago, take a refresher course. CPR classes are available at community centers, hospitals and the American Red Cross.

Teach basic swim skills early. Not only do most children enjoy swimming lessons, but taking formal lessons can save their lives. Water safety not only saves lives but also builds confidence.

Learning to enjoy activities in and around the water nurtures children’s social-emotional, cognitive and physical development. Water safety and swimming lessons promote a lifelong enjoyment of swimming while encouraging healthy living. For more information visit www. ymca.net.
