From Me To You...

Welcome to the April edition of Mountain View magazine.

During a recent conversation with my Mum I found out that my childhood home is up for short term rent. For the next 6 months I could rent my memories. Let me tell you it was very tempting.

Due to the location of this house it would probably cost more to get there than it would to rent, and I really could not take advantage of it this year as my summer is ridiculously overbooked already. Plus it is unfurnished and England in the summer is not exactly comfortable to start with.

Even if you don’t know, you can learn. One of my fondest memories was cooking pancakes on the griddle of that Aga. Sure it could be tricky cooking a cake in an oven that was powered with coal but where is your sense of adventure?

I noted that with an energy rating of ‘F’ they had not decided to improve the heating or insulation in the house. Now that I could have got behind.

Every room had a fireplace to provide heat, and for that reason I can now win the fire starting challenge if I ever make it onto Survivor. Also the eaves over my sister’s bedroom would collect snow every winter, only to release it in a beautiful waterfall in the spring. In front of her doorway.

Inside. I am guessing that may still be a problem.

I flipped through the online pictures and immediately a sense of outrage overtook me.

They had cut down nearly every tree that had surrounded my home. The cherry tree that I lay under reading Tess of the D’Urbervilles - gone.

The oak I learned to climb and hide in - gone.

The broad limbed beauty my siblings and I built a tree house in - gone.

Despite all these glitches it is still the home I grew up in and it holds a special place in my heart.

The indoor shutters are still there - 19th century insulation at it’s best. The amazing staircase that wraps around the outside of the entrance hall reminds me of decorating trees at Christmas. And sliding down the banister, to my parent’s horror.

The long driveway where I learned how to use a stick shift and had the horrible job of shoveling when it snowed still winds past fields and around the front of the house.

What else had changed? Well it seemed they had removed one bathroom only to relocate it on the opposite side of the house. Why? Beats me.

Yes, the house has changed but my home is still there, peeking out behind the improvements that subsequent owners have made. Anyone want to go in on a temporary house share with me?

But still. It made me think, can you ever really go home?

Peace On Earth Studies reveal that people are seeking two things; to know their purpose and to make a difference in the world. We aren’t really surprised by this. We can feel it in ourselves. We want our lives to have meaning and to contribute to the good of others.

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (1 Peter 4:10) We were gifted both to make a difference for others and to reveal God’s grace in the world.

Sadly, we don’t always exercise our gifts. We get excited when someone tells us about a great way to help in the community, but when it comes to signing up and committing, well, we sometimes back off. There are other things we’d like to do.

We have a lot on our plate right now. Have you reacted this way? I admit I have.

Let’s face it, serving others is an interruption.

However, we can look at this as an opportunity.

Serving others is an opportunity. It is also a ‘divine appointment.’ It is God who invites us to take part in making a positive difference in this world, serving as God’s hands, feet and heart, as the slogan of Spirit Song church reads.

Even when I don’t see the outcome, I still know peace at having contributed to the good of others.

Last year, Spirit Song church sponsored a 6K Walk for Water in the community of Vistancia to raise funds to help a village without access to clean water receive a deep water well providing both a clean and dependable water source. (6K is the average distance countless women and children typically walk daily to find clean water in developing countries.) Many people joined in the walk and others chose to sponsor this great cause. We funded an entire well with installation!

Moments Of Zen From work to working out, kids’ activities to household tasks and so much more, modern life has never been busier. The problem is hectic schedules can lead to unnecessary stress.

If you’re one of the many people who feel frazzled on a regular basis, you’re probably longing for a vacation or a day at the spa.

Fortunately, there are plenty of easy ways to cut stress that you can sneak into everyday life. From mealtime to bedtime, if you start embracing small moments to be more mindful, you’ll be surprised how fast you can cut down on overall stress.

Living With Faith

I would venture a guess that nobody will remember the forty-fifth anniversary of the end of the undeclared Viet Nam War. Nowhere will we find mention of it, nor the tremendous affect it had on the conscience of this country. Nowhere will we find mention of the close to 60,00 of our finest, who perished in this fiasco of unparalleled proportions. Nowhere will we find mention of the trillions of dollars expended to execute the disaster that ensued.

In the early years of this undeclared war the list of those killed in action were published daily. Day after day, the list became so numerous that the media neglected to remind us of the tragic end to so many who could have become husbands, or fathers, or entrepreneurs, or laborers, or teachers. Their dreams and aspirations destroyed in an instant.

There was a song written that contained the phrase, “Where have all the young men gone, longtime passing?� The ground they cherished and fought for, this America, has now received their remains. The Valley of the shadow of death has consumed our beloveds and now cries out for us to remember.

abandoned them, mocked them, spit on them, and made them feel ashamed. Shame on us!

Perhaps it was our collective failing that caused us to turn our backs on those forgotten martyrs.

Perhaps when we saw a veteran and a person in uniform we showed our disdain because we could not face them and explain why – why they sacrificed so much for so little. Perhaps their offering of body and soul dimmed our memories.

A monument is all we have to offer. Memories of a time that left us bereft fill our hearts. A nation that once adored its military and lifted them to enormous heights cannot fathom the tragedy of defeat.

We need to pause and remember. We need to remind ourselves that they did not die in vain.

We need to gather this year, more than ever, and stand proudly behind all who serve. We need to pray that God will continue to bless us all because of them. May all merciful God continue to grant them eternal peace in His loving arms as they reap the reward of everlasting life.

America has lost but two wars in its long history: the War of 1812 and of course, Viet Nam. In both instances we felt ourselves to be invincible. Since the end of World War ll we considered ourselves to be the savior of the world. Viet Nam changed all that and showed the world and us that conflict with no purpose is an exercise in futility.

Our hearts are laden with guilt.

Digital Payments Modern digital technology has replaced landlines, television antennas, VCRs, CDs and many other things that were once part of our daily lives - and the next thing to go may well be cash.

Put yourself in those tiny shoes and join a team of individuals that smile, are creative, and passionate about ensuring every child that walks through the doors at Arizonans for Children feels welcomed and loved. We have Visitation Centers with an environment that is homelike and inviting to all children and parents that need time to bond. The children we serve are in foster care or have been away from one parent for a variety of reasons including a divorce, domestic violence, or substance abuse. Our staff invites you to join

From checking in and greeting families, to leading a session of yoga or creating new memories through art, to learning how to supervise a family’s visit, there is a role for you.

Streaming 101 WHAT IS STREAMING? How do you “cut the cord”? It’s a big buzz right now…but what the heck is it and how do I do it? Can I watch the shows and channels that I want to? Can I watch live tv? Can I get sports channels?

With so many questions surrounding streaming, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. Don’t let it scare you off – it isn’t as hard as you may think to begin streaming. With a few clicks you can enjoy the freedom from increasing cable prices, ditch the 200 channels that you never watch and still watch live tv and sports!

Streaming services are just like cable or satellite subscriptions, complete with live broadcasts and a variety of familiar channels, except they come over the Internet rather than through analog cables or satellite signals.

The streaming services offer an all-you-canwatch buffet of streaming content, often at a price well below what most of us spend each month for pay TV. Plus, you can watch TV programming through a streaming app on any internetconnected device, such as a laptop or tablet, anywhere you go. Streaming is not tied to your home’s location.

College Costs The last year of high school is a whirl of activity, and it’s no different when it comes to the final leg of college selection. Once the acceptance notifications arrive, it will soon be time to sit down with a different stack of mail: financial aid letters.

As you undoubtedly know, the cost of college is no small investment. In the 2017-18 academic year, the average tuition and fees for four-year public colleges is $25,620, while for private colleges, the costs are $33,520, according to the College Board. At the same time, the College Board reports that more than 70 percent of students receive grants to help pay for college.

Hopefully, those financial letters contain some good news.

For most families, analyzing the letters is a process of uncovering the college that can offer the best education at the best value for your student. One way to get there is to parse the

details of the letter itself so you understand the net cost of your student’s education.

Still, it’s critical to look at other factors and opportunities around higher education costs.

Taking a deeper look at these can help you and your student reach the best possible decision.

Deciphering free aid vs. other options: Take a close look at each line in the aid column.

Key words, such as scholarships, grants and fellowships, signal no-strings money for school.

Work-study and student loan packages are options that will need students to find a job or pay the money back.

Cost-of-living expenses: Think about those extra costs that come up over the weeks and months of any college year. Don’t forget entertainment.

After all, they’re not going to spend all their time studying in their dorm room. Does the campus and community offer plenty of low-cost and nocost attractions and entertainment so they can have fun with their friends without breaking the bank?

Ongoing costs: The financial aid letter describes the student’s first year. As much as you can, do some forecasting for the next three to four years.

It’s especially important to understand whether awards are renewable, or if they’re available only to first-year students.

Negotiation: If the college isn’t coming through with enough aid to make college affordable for your student and family, don’t give up. You might be able to negotiate more aid. Submit a letter and ask for a follow-up appointment. Be specific about what you are requesting, and be sure to explain if you have specific circumstances such as medical costs or a job loss that may have affected your ability to meet the expected family contribution.

If you find the amount of financial aid provided isn’t enough (including the amount offered in federal loans), families may want to research and explore private student loans option to cover the additional expenses.

Eat Healthier What better time than now to take a look at your diet? If you’re indulging in too many break room snacks or swinging by the drive-thru after work, you’re not alone. With such a busy life, it’s easy to grab something quick and unhealthy on the go. But, the good news is, it’s also easy to make changes in your diet that will reap powerful health benefits in no time. Here are some easy ways to eat healthier: Start small. You don’t have to completely overhaul your diet in a day. Start with small things, like taking your lunch to work instead of eating out, cutting down on soda or getting a new cookbook of healthy recipes to inspire you.

Plan your meals. On the weekend, plan your breakfasts, lunches and dinners for the upcoming week, and then head out to the grocery store, and do your shopping so you’ll have everything you need on hand.

Cook at home. When you eat out, even when opting for the “healthy” items on the menu, you could be getting hidden doses of salt, sugar and fat. When you cook at home, you can control exactly what you’re eating, down to the nutrient.

Slash the sodium. Lowering your sodium intake can help lower your blood pressure and get rid of water weight. But it’s not as easy as putting down the salt shaker. Sodium lurks in places you’d least expect it. Some surprisingly high-sodium foods: raw chicken (if it’s been pumped up with a solution), pre-cooked frozen shrimp (usually processed with salt), condiments like ketchup and mustard, smoked anything and cottage cheese.

Watch your sugar. Too much sugar leads to weight gain, abdominal obesity, low HDL and high LDL, elevated blood sugar and a whole host of other problems. But like salt, sugar can hide in foods you might think are healthy, including instant oatmeal, jarred pasta sauce, smoothies, flavored yogurt and salad dressing. A good rule of thumb: Read the label, and if it has a double-digit sugar count, ditch it.

Meatless Mondays! Going vegetarian one day a week is a great way to get more veggies into your diet. Just don’t pack on the refined carbs like white bread, pasta or potatoes in place of the meat.

Practice mindful eating. Go all Zen with your food. Focus on what you’re eating, how you’re nourishing your body, and how much you enjoy the taste of the food. Eating at your desk, in the car or in front of the TV makes it more likely you’ll overeat.

The constant reminder of how mom is declining surrounds me mentally but not visually like it did when she lived here. That is the healthy ‘break’ that people speak about when warning family members who are caregivers…the ‘break’ from the visual picture we get of our loved ones in discomfort and decline 24/7…the frustration and sadness that we feel all of the time while trying to enjoy them.

I continue to work on getting over the guilt and the powerless feeling of not being able to control the situation. I am slowly getting my life back, but it is a new life. Life with my mom in a care facility.

The reality of this is that I will have to go through this loss again when she passes away. Hopefully, I will be stronger and better prepared. Hopefully.

Positive Parenting Children and teens experience some of the most important moments of their lives at school.

It’s where they spend two-thirds of their waking hours. Of course, school can be stressful, too and not just because of pop quizzes and science projects.

“Stress isn’t the same for all children, and it impacts every one differently,” said Dr. Cheryl S. Al-Mateen, medical director of the Virginia Treatment Center for Children. “In fact, in some cases this stress can even be traumatic. If left unnoticed, it can lead to real mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, selfharm and even substance abuse.”

Everyone deserves to feel comfortable talking about mental health - it plays an important role in a child’s overall health. Sometimes, however, topics around mental health can feel overwhelming or confusing for parents. Many may find it difficult to spot the difference between traditional school stress and the possibility of potential trauma. Fortunately, there are many resources available to help. As a start, Dr. AlMateen has five recommendations to support parents in understanding school issues, helping children cope and tackling potential problems. * Check in about school. It can be difficult in our go-go-go world, but give your child your undivided attention for 5 to 10 minutes every day.

Talk about their friends, teachers and classes.

Open yourself to hearing the good and the bad, and ask what they find difficult - like feeling too nervous to talk or being teased for talking too much. These conversations help you identify problems as they arise, teach your child problemsolving skills and reinforce how deeply you care about their wellbeing. * Strengthen your lines of communication. Talk to them about the little stuff, and they’ll be more apt to tell you about the big stuff.

* Work with your school. If your child is showing signs of stress that concern you, don’t be afraid to reach out to their teacher(s) or school principal.

Your child’s teacher may be able to shed light on what’s causing the stress and, if nothing else, can help watch out for your child during the school day. * Establish a routine at home. Children thrive in stable, consistent environments. Creating a predictable schedule is helpful, if you can, but sometimes that’s just not possible. Make a big family calendar and keep it where everyone can access it. This empowers children to know what’s coming up and helps provide the solid foundation they crave at home. They’ll be better prepared to deal with changes and unexpected situations they may face at school. * Seek help when you need it. How do you know if your child needs help beyond what you or the school can provide? Look for warning signs. For example, young children may complain about stomachaches and headaches that have no physical explanation. When depressed, a child may say that they’re angry, rather than sad, so listen for both - especially when their eating or sleeping patterns also change dramatically, they seem to have low energy or they aren’t taking pleasure in things they enjoyed before. These may be signs of a larger problem that needs to be addressed immediately with help from mental health professionals.

The school years are exciting, important times for your children, but they can be tough. Check in with your child daily and don’t downplay the stress they may feel. Recognizing potential issues quickly can help prevent larger problems down the road.

Vaccines

Childhood and adolescent vaccination is considered by many to be one of the greatest public health accomplishments of the 20th century, but based on the results of a new study by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA), there is still more work to do to ensure children and teens are protected against the diseases vaccines were developed to eradicate.

The report shows childhood vaccination rates climbed 12 percent among young commercially insured members. Data shows 69 percent of young BCBS members born in 2010 were up-todate on their CDC-recommended vaccinations by the age of 2 years and 3 months compared to 77 percent of children born in 2013.

The study also found that the rate of documented vaccine refusal - in other words, doctors charting parental refusal of vaccines for their children went up by nearly 70 percent for children born in 2013 compared to those born in 2010.

The result of vaccine refusal can be dangerous, not only for the child who is vulnerable to diseases like measles and diphtheria, but for the community at large.

It played itself out in Minnesota last year, when a measles outbreak in the Twin Cities exceeded

the total number of cases reported in the entire U.S. the year before. Health officials didn’t have to look far for the cause. Spread of the highly infectious disease started in the state’s Somali-American community. According to the Minnesota Department of Health, the vaccination rate among Somali-American children dropped from the high 80s to a low of 42 percent last year in response to the anti-vaccine movement’s targeting efforts, fueling the outbreak. But the disease wasn’t confined to the Somali community.

It spread throughout the Minnesota public school system as well, infecting non-vaccinated children.

The disease is nothing to take lightly. At the low end, it causes fever, runny nose, cough, sore throat and a rash, but it can be deadly, spawning pneumonia, blindness and even encephalitis.

One especially alarming complication lurks in the brain for years after a person has recovered and mysteriously reawakens, causing seizures, coma and death. No one who has contracted that complication has survived.

It’s not just childhood vaccines that parents are refusing. According to the BCBSA report, only 29 percent of adolescents received a first dose of the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine before their 13th birthday.

The HPV vaccine rates lag far behind other adolescent vaccines, meningococcal and Tdap, which have rates of 72 percent and 82 percent, respectively. And that’s a problem. According to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 31,500 people die every year from cancers caused by HPV. It’s a heartbreaking statistic, especially because the American Cancer Institute estimates that, if all teens were vaccinated against HPV, cervical cancer would be eliminated within one generation.

The key to protecting children and teens from diseases like measles, rubella and HPV is vaccination, according to the CDC. Talk to your child’s doctor about the safety and benefits of vaccination, if you have any doubt.
