From Me To You... Those of you who know me understand that I love to travel. Covid put the kibosh on that for a while, but I am beginning to spread my wings again. In fact, I am writing to you from a foreign country - not the trip I planned, but it has it’s bright spots nevertheless. In my youth I would fill a backpack with whatever clothes were clean, grab my camera, and I was off. Not a care for creature comforts, not much planning at all, but with a ton of enthusiasm! As I have aged my requirements have changed somewhat. The itinerary is considered, reviews taken into account, and excursions mapped out along the way. Packing is more specific too; I have to factor in comfy shoes and adequate layering. What stays with me on the plane now must allow for all the electronic devices - plus chargers. The most useful necessity I travel with though, is my own pillow. I cannot emphasize enough the value of sleeping with the right pillow. Imagine

51 Years

traveling to a far-flung location and you can’t appreciate all the glory of those Roman ruins because you have a crick in your neck. It is the little things that make so much difference. On this particular trip I am in the land I grew up in, so my packing became even more challenging. I had to bring enough clothes for varied weather possibilities, the aforementioned electronic devices, adapters so I don’t blow up said electronic devices, and most importantly, room to bring home delicacies form my youth. Although I can have almost anything shipped to me in the US, it is vastly more expensive, and I don’t get to try things first. Plus, there are Easter Eggs like you wouldn’t believe here. Giant hollow chocolate spheres filled with yummy confections! Then there is coffee. I do love my coffee, and recently, thanks to a discerning relative who introduced me to Nespresso, I have become a coffee snob. As with my pillow, a great cup of coffee sets me up for a wonderful start to my day. And as I only drink one cup a day, it has to be good! I used to travel and make-do with whatever coffee I could find, but on this last trip I decided that as I was going for an extended stay, and I knew that the only coffee on offer would be instant, I would have a machine shipped to my location. Oh boy am I glad I did. Not only did I find it for a third of the original price but now I can gift it to my hosts when I leave. You could say I gave them two gifts, the joy of a cheerful morning, plus a new appliance. Catherine Uretsky Editor, Mountain View Magazine info@estrellapublishing.com 623.398.5541

Spiritual Thoughts In 6th grade I decided to join after-school Track and Field. That year had been one of a lot of transitions. My father had been laid off from his job and we thought we might move to Texas. I told all my friends, and then it didn’t end up happening. Instead, we moved into a rental home on the other side of town and I decided to go to a new school. I had also just gained 15 pounds as a result of being told that I did not have a milk-digestion disorder called galactosemia and was now able to eat dairy products (after 10 years of not eating any at all.) So, I was a “newbie” at school and not in great shape. It was surprising to my family when I decided to join track and field because I had never done it before. (You have to have a “first time” at most things, right?) I found out quickly that I was not

You Deserve to be Comfortable

a runner. I almost had a heart attack when the coach made us run warm up laps. So I did Shot Put all season. Then, one day, when we were on the bus going to a track meet the coach told us we did not have anyone assigned to the 200 meter hurdles. He looked at me and said, “Can you do the hurdles?” I have discovered that I like challenges. Especially one time, very dramatic challenges. So I agreed to it. At the event (one in which I had NEVER DONE BEFORE) I ran and jumped as fast and high as I could. I made it over the first hurdle, softly hitting it with my knee.. I did the same with the next one. And the next one. I was exhausted. I didn’t have enough energy to make it over the last hurdle and I ran right into it and skidded across the dirt track. I still have the scar on my knee. I feel like the event gave me a unique perspective on “hurdles.” We face many hurdles in our lives. Sometimes it can seem that what we thought was a clear path suddenly has hurdles to jump over, obstacles to dodge, or even something so difficult that it makes us feel as if we skidded through the dirt. When facing my own hurdles I remember Bible passages like this: Hebrews 12:1 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”

The last few years have brought incredible challenges to small and micro businesses (SMBs), plus some amazing stories of tenacity and survival. These businesses have seen enormous changes, fueled by consumer habits that are here to stay. If your small business does not yet have an online presence and hasn’t yet mastered ways to accept digitized payments online or in-store, now’s the time to get on board. E-commerce has grown exponentially and it’s not going anywhere. Plenty of tools and tactics are available to help any size business develop and grow their e-commerce capabilities. Here are some tips to help get your business where it needs to be. Create or improve your website Developing an attractive, seamless and userfriendly website is not only crucial to compete in today’s marketplace, but it can also be the difference maker in a business’ survival.

SVP Merchant Sales & Acquiring at Visa. “We’ve seen that SMBs who have embraced digital commerce and made changes to the way they operate not only have weathered the pandemic better but are also setting themselves up to thrive in the future.” Build customer loyalty and engagement Social media platforms can help you attract new customers, engage with them and reward their participation and loyalty. Creating content like blogs as well as encouraging customer reviews and postings can help build a sense of community with your customer base. You can also use technology to create a digital customer loyalty program, offering special discounts and promotions for your frequent buyers. Offering benefits like these motivates consumers to do business with you and creates positive buzz about your business. For more information on the programs Visa has made available to small and micro businesses visit the Visa Small Business Hub and the Visa Small Business COVID-19 support site.

If you don’t have a website, start here: * Make sure your web address/URL is easy to say, spell and remember. * Select a website host and platform. The host allows your website to have connectivity to the internet, while the platform helps you design and build your website. * If you don’t have a web designer on staff, hire a professional to design a website that’s easy to navigate, and that helps consumers quickly understand your business, its services or products. Create new ways for customers to make digital payments “More than ever, people are engaging across multiple channels - shopping online, in-store and through mobile apps,” said Jeni Mundy, Global Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

The Bug Guy Spring in the desert, certainly, is the best time of year! Comfortable weather, not too hot, not too cold unfortunately some of the animals we share the desert with feel the same way. Western diamondback rattlesnakes are pit vipers. This means that they have a heat sensing pit located behind each nostril that can detect differences in temperature, sometimes differences that are only a fraction of a degree apart. The heat given off by an animal is detected by the snake helping it to determine predator from prey. This snake is considered a generalist, which means that it isn’t too picky about its habitat. It can be found living in deserts, grassy plains, forests, rocky hillsides and areas along the coast. It lives in elevations from below sea level up to 6500 feet (2000m). This species ranges throughout the southwestern United States (Arizona, California, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas) and northern half of Mexico. Mice, rats, rabbits, gophers, ground dwelling birds, lizards and other small animals make up the diet of this snake. They also have many predators, and not always because the predator wants to eat them. Animals such as deer, antelope, cows and horses regard the diamondback as a threat, and they may try to trample or stomp the snake. Eagles, hawks, roadrunners, kingsnakes, coyote, bobcats or foxes however are predators who look at these 10 Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

snakes as a source of food. Diamondbacks will often spend the hot daytime hours coiled in the shade of low-growing shrubs, piles of natural or artificial debris, or rocks. They will also utilize underground burrows of other animals. In the winter, they retreat into caves or similar places to hibernate. These snakes can live approximately 15-20 years in captivity and can range in size from 3 to 5 feet long with a few reaching 7 feet long. The rattle of the rattlesnake is made up of a protein called keratin (the same protein that your hair and fingernails are made of). A new segment is added each time a rattlesnake sheds, but they can shed at different rates. Because of this, and the fact that segments can break off, you really can’t tell a snake’s age by counting the segments. A rattlesnake can move its rattle back and forth 60 or more times per second. Rattlesnake prevention methods can include habitat modification and alteration. Areas around your home can be addressed to make it less appealing to rattlesnakes. Controlling prey populations is another key way to prevent a rattlesnake encounter. Submitted by Larry Cash, of Estrella Mountain Pest Control

Internet Safety Today, Americans lose more money to digital crime than to home burglary. About 80% of U.S. adults say they are not doing enough to protect their personal information online, however, most don’t know where to start conversations with their families about internet safety. Here are five tips you can follow to stay safe online 1. Get creative with passwords While it’s easier to remember a few passwords for many accounts, you are leaving your family open to identity theft and other cyberattacks. Update your passwords to consist of a random combination of letters, numbers and symbols. 2. Tighten up your social media privacy Most people provide personal information like their name, birthday, job and hometown on social media without a second thought. To help prevent identity theft, review the privacy settings

for your social media platforms. 3. Don’t ignore updates

Don’t ignore system and browser updates as they provide critical updates that protect against hackers and fix any critical issues in software. When possible, enroll in automatic updates and use antivirus software, antispyware and a firewall on your computer. 4. Avoid suspicious websites When shopping online, it’s crucial to know what makes a website safe to explore. Check to see if “https” appears in the URL. Also, review the site for misspellings, grammar mistakes and low-quality images. 5. Stay alert for phishing scams

Phishing attacks are emails, phone calls and texts that appear to come from a reputable source but attempt to instill fear and urgency in the recipient. Phishing scams offer too-good-to-be-true deals, urgent notification to reset an account login or contain an attachment or hyperlinks. To protect your family against phishing, teach your loved ones to: * Never share credit card details or sensitive personal information like your Social Security number via email or phone. * Don’t open any attachments or click embedded links. * Don’t download software from unknown email addresses. Live Long & Prosper Say goodbye to fad diets and fleeting exercise trends; it’s time to introduce yourself to a new way of living life to the fullest: The Blue Zones way. National Geographic researcher and best-selling author, Dan Buettner spent two decades researching areas of the world where people live the longest, healthiest lives, and identified five locations where people consistently live to 100 or beyond. He calls these areas “The Blue Zones”: * Sardinia, Italy * The islands of Okinawa, Japan * Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica * Ikaria, Greece * Loma Linda, California, United States

are simple and often fun to achieve. It’s 5 o’clock somewhere Raise a glass and smile because people in all Blue Zones drink alcohol moderately and regularly. The trick is to drink one or two glasses of wine, per day, with food or friends. Everyone can toast to that.

Go ahead, skip the gym Regular physical activity is still an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but Buettner suggests moving naturally around your environment, doing things that you love. Grow a garden and tend to it daily. Walk to the store with friends. Just move your body naturally and frequently. Grab a buddy Successful centenarians in the Blue Zones put their families and friends first; they keep aging parents and grandparents nearby or in the home, they commit to a life partner, and keep a valued group of friends close.

Once these areas were established, Buettner and his team studied and identified the lifestyle characteristics that might explain the longevity After a difficult 2021, and a rough start to 2022, of those living in each location, including their it’s officially time to start living a better, longer, diets, levels of physical activity, social networks, views on life’s purpose and more. Fairness

My grandmother (a.k.a. Mom) was always about fairness. When people would say, “That’s not fair or life’s not fair,” she would look at my brothers and me, smile, and wink. She saw life differently than most and believed the more a person tries, the fairer life became. She would say, “You can go through life complaining about things or you can do something about it.” Her favorite saying, “Be fair to yourself.” When I didn’t understand my math homework, I became frustrated, threw my pencil down and quit. Mom would say, “Be fair to yourself: when you don’t understand something…ask a question.” I asked and I became very good at math. When I couldn’t make a basket because the basketball hoop was too high, Mom would say “Be fair to yourself; give yourself a chance to become good.” I became good and in sixth grade I played on the eighth-grade basketball team and we won the CYO Championship.

When I started playing little league baseball I would always strike out and spend most of the game on the bench. Mom would say, “Be fair to yourself; give yourself a chance to improve.” I improved and became very good at getting on base. I became a great coach and understood that fairness was to help kids learn and encourage them to continue trying. (Be fair to yourself and give yourself a chance to be all you can be, at math, as an artist, reader, writer, athlete, friend, parent, teacher or mentor.) Years ago, my grandmother had her Fav Five: Be fair to yourself; ask questions. Be fair to yourself; try something more than once. Be fair to yourself; believe you can do it. Be fair to yourself; do not give up. Be fair to yourself and you will know how to be fair to others. My grandmother was about fairness. She taught me the more I tried, the fairer life became. But most importantly she taught me to be fair to myself. Author Larry Tracey is Executive Director of Youth4Youth, author, speaker, and member of the 3PC (Peoria Primary Prevention Coalition).
