From Me To You...
Flemming discovered Penicillin in 1928, a mere 16 years after the Spanish Flu decimated the world.
It is amazing what you can buy online now. Everything from office supplies, to medication, to treats from your hometown. If you are anything like me you have a subscription to Amazon which makes it all too easy to click a button and have almost anything delivered within a couple of days.
Once again science is coming to our rescue. This time more swiftly than Penicillin and with the amazing potential to eradicate this virus that has changed the world for all of us. At it’s most basic, the vaccines will protect individuals and once enough people are inoculated it will protect those who are unable to be vaccinated.
In the past, or BC as I like to call it (Before Covid), this was seen as lazy or pandering to big business. Now it is a lifeline. Local businesses are more and more frequently offering online options and delivery, and being able to stay at home is the way to go. We can chat with family and friends far and wide, through video chats. Our children can still get a modicum of education, although the quality of that education has been reduced dramatically. We can, to a degree, live our lives and maintain a functioning society. Could you imagine life without the internet? It is so much part of our lives that I barely remember how to function without it.
Like many of you I am waiting for my turn to get the vaccine. It is frustrating for sure, but I know that once I have been cleared I will be able to hold my loved ones once again and that is worth waiting for.
Catherine Uretsky

Now try to imagine going through the pandemic without that lifeline. I think things would be very different indeed. Good grief, people would have to entertain themselves and they would absolutely be more isolated. I have been looking up the 1912 Spanish Flu pandemic and the parallels to today are remarkable. Masks recommended by the government. Lockdowns. Businesses and schools closed temporarily. Vaccination sites popping up. And even a rash of crazy claims that would ‘cure’ you - quinine or bloodletting anyone? What they didn’t have then that could have made a huge difference in reducing the number of deaths was antibiotics. The flu vaccine helped with the initial infection, but the pneumonia and other infections that set in as a result of that flu ran rampant, killing many thousands of people. Antibiotics could have made all the difference and they were so close on the horizon. Alexander 4 Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

Spiritual Thoughts Hello Vistancia!
I am terrible at using self-checkout lanes. I use them almost every time I go to the grocery store. At first, I used them so I could use my reusable bags. Most days they seem the most convenient. However, each time I use these accommodating lanes there is inevitably a problem with the way I scan and I always trigger the blinking yellow light that brings assistance. Sometimes I think the selfcheckout lanes are out to get me. Similarly, I was playing video games with my family and my character needed to jump quickly, but I couldn’t do it successfully. Time and again I failed to make the jump. “The button is broken!!” I exclaimed, over and over again. In both cases I am tempted to blame the things around me for my own mistakes. A popular verse from Matthew 7 says, “Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.”

Most interpret this as “don’t judge others when you have also done things that need to be taken care of.” I wonder if another acceptable takeaway is “take responsibility for things yourself before blaming others.” Stephen Covey in 7 Habits of Highly Effective People remind us we have control over a lot more than we think we do. He uses the example of a student coming to ask him if he can miss a class to play in a tennis tournament. The student said, “I have to miss your class because I have to go to this tournament.” Covey walked him through his decision by saying “No, you choose to play in the tennis tournament because the consequences would be you would get kicked off of the tennis team if you do not play. The consequences of missing my class will be you get the notes from someone else.” He makes sure to re-frame the student’s way of thinking so they know they have the power to make choices. He adds “I would play in the tennis tournament.” Each of us has power to make choices. When we evaluate what happens to us through the lens of empowerment we can help fix our own situations and even others’. Money Matters If you’re in a blended family, you’re already aware of the emotional and financial issues involved in your daily life. But what about the future? When it’s time to do your estate planning – and it’s never too soon for that – you’ll need to be aware of the entanglements and complexities that can get in the way of your vision for leaving the legacy you desire. Nonetheless, the task does not have to be overwhelming – as long as you put sufficient time and thought into it. Here are some ideas that may help: • Seek fairness – but be flexible. Even in a nonblended family, it’s not always easy to be as equitable as you’d like in your estate plans. Keep this in mind: Fair is not always equal – and equal is not always fair. When deciding how to divide your assets, you’ll need to make some judgment calls. There’s no guarantee that everyone will be satisfied, but you’ll have done your best. • Communicate your wishes clearly. When it comes to estate planning, the best surprise is no surprise – and that’s especially true in a blended family. Even if you’re the one creating your estate plans, try to involve other family members – and make your wishes and goals clear. You don’t have
to be specific down to the last dollar, but you should provide a pretty good overall outline. • Consider establishing a revocable living trust which gives you much more control than a will when it comes to carrying out your wishes. Plus, because you have transferred your assets to the trust, you are no longer technically the owner of these assets, so there’s no reason for a court to get involved, which means your estate can likely avoid the process of probate. • Choose the right trustee. You can hire a professional trustee – someone with the time, experience and neutrality to make appropriate decisions and who can bring new ideas to the process. Above all else, make sure you have the right estate-planning team in place. You’ll certainly need to work with an attorney, and you may also want to bring in your tax advisor and financial professional. Estate planning can be complex – especially with a blended family – and you’ll want to make the right moves, right from the start. Mask Choice
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, you have probably wondered what kind of face mask provides the most effective protection but is also easy and comfortable. You have probably also heard that double masking provides better protection against the more easily transmissible variants of COVID-19 that have been spreading recently. So how can you know what kind of mask to use?

Surgical masks are meant to be single-use only and are disposable, and they are not tight-fitting. Homemade masks Because respiratory droplets and the airborne coronavirus particles they might contain are extremely small, it is still possible for someone wearing a cloth mask to be exposed to COVID-19 if they are close to someone who is infected. Loose-fitting cloth masks, single-layer masks, or wearing them incorrectly (such as exposing your nose) are far less effective in offering any protection from COVID-19 or other viruses. For these reasons, bandanas and neck gaiters are examples of some of the least protective cloth masks. If you prefer homemade cloth masks, creating masks with

Online Dating \Whatever your dating life was like before the pandemic, it’s most likely changed due to the circumstances at hand. Thankfully, many onlinedating platforms are rising to the occasion, providing secure and safe ways for people to connect. In turn, singles everywhere are getting creative, figuring out how to learn more about each other before meeting in person. Here are some tips for mastering the art of virtual dating and navigating in-person dating first steps.
1. Switch up your means of communication Doing one video call after another is exhausting. Break up how you regularly interact with potential dates. Suggest a voice call one day, video chat another day, or stick to texting during the week. You can also spare your thumbs the trouble and leave an audio message. 2. Don’t treat virtual dates like job interviews While it’s common to ask questions about your date’s life, there are ways you can interact without making it seem like a job interview. Hop on a video chat, throw on your chef’s hat, cook the same meal from home, and compare the results for some friendly competition. Feeling lazy? Order takeout from the same restaurant. You can also offer a virtual tour of your place and ask to see theirs - or for less pressure, have them show you their view out the window. 3. Set time limits If you have several hours on your hands, trying to fill the void with conversation can be daunting - and awkward. Instead, set expectations and boundaries by saying, “I only have a half-hour to chat today” (with no excuse required). Once the time is up, you can politely excuse yourself. 4. Have “the COVID talk” At some point, especially if you want to meet in person, it’s necessary to discuss your level of comfort with social distancing. To avoid making Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine
the other person feel defensive, put it in terms of your lifestyle. Explain what health precautions you take, such as maskwearing and avoiding crowds. Everyone is going to have a different comfort zone. You don’t need to apologize - you just need to be a good communicator. Make sure you’re on the same page as your date before deciding to meet in real life. 5. Plan a socially distant first date (or two, or more) If you’ve ever seen a Jane Austen adaptation, you know that dating in the 19th century was all about taking walks. It seems like a good time to revive that fad! If you’d prefer to connect over a conversation during a more low-key date, bundle up or meet at a semi-sheltered location like an outdoor market. Just keep your distance from crowds - and keep that mask on. At the end of the day, don’t take dating too seriously. Dating is a form of exploration - it’s supposed to be something that adds to your life. Take a break if you need it. And when you get back to swiping, you’ll bring a more confident self to the table. 2021 Hacks
While 2020 was a rollercoaster of emotions, this year doesn’t have to be. These hacks will help you navigate the new norm this year - and make sure 2021 kicks off on a stress-free note. 1) Make your home cozy Make your home extra cozy this season since everyone is still spending more time at home. Missing family members who can’t visit? Incorporate their photos into your decor to invoke family memories and to feel closer. Cheery decor can improve your entire vibe - so whether you deck the patio with string lights, buy some new cozy candles or spice up your bar cart with festive beverages, embrace the athome life.
2) Protect your packages with in-garage delivery If you’re planning to do most of your shopping online like the majority of Americans, it’s even more important than ever to be prepared with a secure and contactless delivery solution like Key by Amazon In-Garage Delivery. Ensure your packages are protected against damage, theft and weather. All you need is a myQ smart garage door opener linked to Key by Amazon app to have packages delivered directly into your garage. myQ technology can be added to all leading brands of garage door openers in minutes via a myQ Smart Garage Hub. 3) Start a new family tradition Since life is slowed down and everyone is snuggled in at home, consider making the most of the situation and putting some extra thought into starting a new family tradition for special days in 2021. Try experimenting with new delicious family recipes (perhaps spark some friendly competition with a bakeoff over Zoom?), having an online trivia party for your birthday or maybe even try building an ice-skating rink or putting green on your lawn. 4) Entertaining and need extra space to spread out? Consider your garage Your garage is an extension of your home and can be a great place this year to remain socially distant. If you’re entertaining and need extra space to spread out, why not utilize your garage? The indoor/outdoor space lets in fresh air and creates additional room for hosting loved ones. Add space heaters, twinkling lights, some fun music and pour the hot cocoa!

Pets’ Moving Day
For families moving across town, Purina experts offer tips to help prepare pets for a stress-free move.
1. Take a ‘practice-run’ ahead of time: If you’re moving with dogs, let them explore the new neighborhood before you move if possible. This helps them become familiar with the scents and sounds of the area. For a cat, help him or her get used to their crate. Leave the carrier out with the door open for the cat to explore weeks ahead of time. Take a few short practice drives so the cat is used to traveling in the carrier. This will reduce the stress of travel on moving day. 2. Make a moving day plan: Consider your pets’ safety amidst the chaos of moving day. Keep cats in a space away from the moving process. A bathroom at your new home is an ideal spot to set up food, water and a litter box, so cats are out of the way and comfortable until the move is complete. Dogs can be trickier. It’s best to ask a trusted friend to pet-sit for the day.
3. Help curious cats settle in: It takes time for cats to become familiar with their new surroundings. Make sure doors and windows are closed, as they may try to escape to find their old home. Cats may “disappear” into a hiding place like a closet to calm their nerves. Keep their things in this first room, so they become used to the new home with familiar scents, then move their bedding and scratching posts across the house to make other rooms feel more familiar. 4. Let dogs sniff out their space: Allow dogs to use their natural instincts to smell and explore by walking them on a leash for their first tour around the house. The sooner they get used to the scents of their new environment, the sooner they’ll feel at home. Maintain a regular routine and spend extra time with them at home to help them feel secure. Avoid leaving your pup outside unattended at first; a new environment may bring out new skills you didn’t know your dog had like jumping over or digging under fences as an attempt to return to familiar ground. After you move, give your pet extra attention. Your presence will have a calming effect and reassure them.

Bike Lane & Sidewalk Safety
The COVID situation has been quite the challenge for everyone and hopefully it will all soon be under control. However, it has also provided some incredibly positive opportunities such as getting closer with family, becoming more resourceful, and creating new avenues of entertainment. Amongst the outdoor entertainment possibilities is the opportunity to get out of the house to enjoy walking, running, and bike riding. Numerous articles have been written regarding the safe (and legal) use of bike lanes and sidewalks on the streets in Arizona. Here are a few points: 1. Only bikes can use a marked bike lane. 2. If a sidewalk is present on either side of the street then any person “afoot” (pedestrian, runner, walker, etc.) is not allowed in the street.
Bicyclists 1. Always wear a helmet. 2. Ride only in the direction of traffic while in the bike lane. 3. Observe all vehicle traffic laws. 4. If a collision between a bicycle and a pedestrian occurs on the sidewalk the bicyclist will be at fault. 5. Be aware of your surroundings and other traffic. 6. Enjoy the outdoors and have fun! Runners, walkers, pedestrians 1. If a sidewalk is present on either side of the street, you’re not allowed in the bike lane. 2. If no sidewalk is present, then proceed facing oncoming traffic if you are in the roadway. 3. If a collision between a bicycle and a pedestrian occurs in a marked bike lane the pedestrian will be at fault. 4. Be aware of your surroundings and any other traffic. 5. Enjoy the outdoors and have fun! We are all doing these activities for health and enjoyment. Common sense, courtesy, and caution will make things more enjoyable and safer. So, get out and safely enjoy our fantastic Arizona outdoors! Submitted by Steve Goto, Vistancia resident

Non-Stress Estate Planning Estate planning does not need to be complex or confusing. You deserve to have your questions answered when they arise. Your documents should be helpful when you need it most. On-line services and computer forms simply do not address the variety of issues that might arise as we do in our office. The court process of probate can be avoided with a revocable trust for some, but others can utilize a beneficiary deed with more ease. Privacy laws can prevent you from being assisted by your spouse, trusted friend or family member. Powers of attorney give the right person the legal authority to help you. We make sure you have the correct power of attorney you need, including for finances, medical health care or mental health care. Inheritances for minors, whether children or grandchildren, can be bogged down by a court
conservatorship when a trust is not used. A court conservatorship is more costly and burdensome than a probate. The trusts we prepare address the needs of minors to avoid court conservatorship and if necessary provide incentives for education and employment. A good estate plan provides centralized management for your assets if you are incapacitated or upon your death. Our documents are drafted to provide the benefit of avoiding avoid obstacles and disputes whether you have multiple beneficiaries or one special heir. Peoria 411
Get out and hike one of the many park trails. Peoria Needs Your Input One of the many things Peoria is known for is its stunning Sonoran desert land- scape, with unfettered access to hiking trails, biking trails, walking paths and some of the most scenic vistas in the Valley. The Peoria City Council and city leadership have prioritized the preservation of open space, purposefully planning for a balance of the built and natural environments in the city. With 33 parks, 20 miles of trails and several mountain preserves, Peoria continues to strategically preserve its cultural and natural assets as well as enhance them with diverse and inclusive recreational amenities. You, the Peoria residents, are a vital component of that planning process, provid- ing important feedback and support during the planning and engagement periods. Like we did with the first phase of the development of Paloma Community Park, the city is currently working on the details of phase two. Phase two will include the final development of 35 more acres in the park as well
as the connections to surrounding open spaces and trail systems. The community engagement period will begin this year where residents will be asked to share their ideas for recre- ational amenities, such as a skate park or basketball courts, and provide their ideas on so much more. For more information, visit www.peoriaaz.gov/ paloma. Alongside Paloma’s expansion, the city is creating a Trails Master Plan update this year as well. The goal of this plan is to audit the city’s existing trails as well as how those connect to private and public trail systems outside of Peoria’s boundaries. With that information and the help of residents, we can identify and prioritize projects for the city. The critical piece of this plan is citizen engagement, which will be woven through the whole process through surveys, focus groups, public meet- ings, and proactive and ongoing communication. Be sure to check out our current trails information at www.peoriaaz.gov/trails. Exciting things are coming to Peoria and we want to hear from you. Help us create innovative and sustainable outdoor spaces and recreational amenities. Stay tuned as more information about Paloma Community Park and the Trails Master Plan become available. Vaccine Questions
With COVID-19 vaccination underway in the United States, many Americans are preparing to get the vaccine to protect themselves and help slow the spread of COVID-19. Knowing what to expect and how to properly prepare for your appointment can help put your mind at ease.
COVID-19 vaccines are now available in the U.S., and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the vaccines approved in the U.S. do not contain the live virus that causes COVID-19 and therefore you cannot contract COVID-19 from them. The CDC states these vaccines have been carefully evaluated in clinical trials and are deemed safe and effective by the FDA with a full advisory committee meeting review for all vaccines. Getting a vaccine not only protects you, but also the people around you, especially those who are unable to get vaccinated. The CDC offers guidance summarized below to help you prepare for your vaccination: 1) If you’re approved to get a vaccine, talk to your healthcare provider ahead of time. You may be going to a vaccination clinic where your healthcare provider is not directly administering the injection, so if you have questions, speak with them before your appointment. 2) Do not schedule any other vaccinations within two weeks before your COVID-19 vaccination. If you feel ill before your appointment, call the vaccination clinic and ask if you should still come in or reschedule. 3) Get good rest the days prior to the appointment, especially the night before. Eat a light meal or snack before your appointment and stay hydrated. 4) Ask about side effects. While some people have no symptoms, others may experience headache, muscle/joint pain, chills, fever and fatigue that generally subside after 48 hours. Plan for several low-key days following your 18 Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine
vaccination. 5) Plan ahead for postvaccination care by having the essentials on hand in your medicine cabinet. According to the CDC, over-the-counter medications like Advil) can reduce pain, fever or discomfort associated with post-COVID-19 vaccine, including mild aches or arm soreness. 6) If your vaccine requires two doses, consult with your vaccination clinic or pharmacy to schedule your second dose. While millions in the U.S. have received the COVID-19 vaccine, availability is currently limited and you may not be able to get it right away. Continue to take smart safety measures such as washing your hands frequently with soap and water, wearing a mask when out in public, avoiding large crowds, and appropriate social distancing. For more information about how to prepare for the COVID-19 vaccine visit www.cdc. gov.

Decorator’s Corner Change is on the horizon as 2021 is poised to be a transition year for home design. Expect some of the cool and minimalistic trends of the past to be replaced with more approachable designs that convey comfort, warmth and positivity. To bring warmth into your home and enjoy this growing trend for years to come, LL Flooring offers this advice: Determine color schemes For many years, cool color schemes have dominated home design. People are now seeking to add warm colors and materials in their home. Colors with yellow undertones are in high demand, from wall paint to furniture and beyond. Update flooring Because organic materials typically convey warmth, hardwood floors are a worthwhile investment. The visually interesting and intricate wood grains can be enhanced with any color stain, although warm hues are trending. Not only do hardwood floors add a warm element to a space, but they also feel warmer on the feet than tile and laminate flooring alternatives. Analyze lighting Light can add to or detract from the feeling of warmth in any space. Natural light sources are always welcome, so make sure to open shades to illuminate spaces. Of course additional light sources will be necessary, so think about how overhead, task and accent lighting can best work together in areas. Finally, when looking at lights, consider the type of bulbs you use and opt for options that project warmer light rather than those with cooler light tones that have white or blue undertones. Use mirrors strategically Mirrors serve multiple purposes in a room: They add artistic style, they visually expand the space and they reflect light. Designers often strategically place a mirror to bounce natural light or reflect the exterior landscape, helping bring the feeling of the outdoors inside in a subtle yet meaningful way. Add plants and foliage A simple way to add life into your home is adding plants. Humans are naturally drawn to nature, so adding foliage brings a warmth to any room. If you’re not much of a green thumb, consider low-maintenance houseplants like snake plant, spider plant and succulents. If you love the look of plants but just don’t want to deal with the real things, shop for plastic alternatives that closely mimic their real counterparts. You might be surprised how realistic modern faux plants appear.
