From Me To You... Have you ever sat in the space between? That moment you know your world is going to change. Perhaps you are waiting for news of a loved one, or anticipating a test result. I know many of you recognize that grey space. I sit here now. Nothing to be done. Everything I can do has been accomplished and the world turns on the actions of others. Others who will change my future for good or ill. This is the space where mothers of sick children pray for mercy. Children of ailing parents count the blessings of a life well lived. Those waiting for news of family and friends, or loved ones far away in known danger, pace a well-worn track in the floor. This space is one many of us know and reluctantly return to time after time. It is a place to sit in. A place to remember the good and accept what will come. No matter what that voice on the phone may tell us come morning. This is the place we come to after we have done

51 Years

all the things available to us. Accepted that there is nothing more to be done but wait and pray. This is the longest night, and I have a sense of time rushing ahead and yet, at the same time, crawling at a snail’s pace. The future whizzing towards me, fizzing with possibility and dread, and yet turning to molasses, as time seems to gum up and halt in its tracks. I want to plan, to prepare, but for what? Until I have answers I am stuck, unsure of which direction to plant my foot, which path to follow. There will be a busy time soon enough. Tasks to complete and processes to follow. Accepted paths I will take, depending on the news to come. Either way the fates choose, I will be able to move forward again. Until then I pause and try to be serene, calm, until I know for sure. I feel the fellowship of this space. It calms me, holds me safe and cradles my raw nerves. The knowledge that multitudes have been here before me is comforting. I am not alone, no matter how lonely the situation feels. I am taking a well worn path and I sense others who bide their time nearby, traveling on their own journey and yet standing sentinel beside me. I gather strength from their presence, knowing we share this burden, melded together by our mutual desire for relief. We all carry hope, we all cherish a life, we all pause together in the space between.

Spiritual Thoughts Happy February! Some children’s books I keep long after my children outgrow them, because really there are certain books we never outgrow. The one I went searching for today was Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst. January wasn’t the best month for me. Five of my family members and I came down with COVID, even though we were immunized against it. It put an early end to a nice holiday we were having together in Flagstaff and complicated my children returning to school. It took me over 2 weeks to fully recover. Some days I thought about life very much like Alexander. Everything was going wrong. We had to go online only for church again for a few weeks because of rising

COVID cases. My house got dirtier and dirtier, personal and professional responsibilities slipped through my fingers. Some of the trouble was because I failed to prepare (This quote comes to mind “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail”) Alexander went to bed with gum in his mouth and woke up with it in his hair. Other things that came across my path was just random bad luck, just like when they didn’t have the color shoes Alexander wanted in his size. My story is not the only one I have heard recently of things getting bad, worse and worst. I am often reminded of Job and the circumstances that led to him losing everything but his faith. It’s easy to see Job as the spokesperson for really hard times. But other people in our faith traditions had a rough time too. Abraham got things wrong several times as he listened for God’s instructions. Moses could not convince Pharaoh to release the Hebrew people until after God sent the plagues. There is something that each of these faith-filled ancestors had in common: as bad as things got, eventually, things got better. February is a reminder to share love with one another. At Spirit Song we include in our mission the second greatest commandment which is to love one another as we love ourselves. Don’t forget to think about the part where you love yourself. It’s okay to admit you are in a bad place, or having a bad day. It’s okay to extend to yourself the grace, mercy and compassion you extend to others. In fact, it could be that by honoring yourself now, you can better love your neighbors later. Praying all of you are having a better season than Alexander and our faithful ancestors. Furry Friends If you’re one of the more than 90 million American households with a pet congratulations! No matter which breed you’ve adopted or rescued, it’s likely your furry friend is an important member of the family. In fact, studies have shown that pets can help keep you healthy because they offer companionship, unconditional love and a motivation to exercise. If you’ve already added a pet to the family or are considering adopting one, the rewards of pet parenthood are many, but it’s also important to understand the realistic costs of lifelong pet care and be financially prepared. Just like human members of the family, pets need routine wellness checks to stay healthy and can also get sick or injured unexpectedly. And that can impact your budget. Rather than be surprised by the cost of your pet’s care, you can prepare for potential health care expenses before they become a reality. Two budget-friendly solutions for both routine and unexpected costs are pet financing solutions, like CareCredit, and pet health insurance, like Pets Best. The two solutions work independently or together as a comprehensive safety net. Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

Being proactive about your pet’s routine and preventative care not only keeps them healthy, but it can also help keep costs down. Dr. Chris Roth, DVM recommends: * Scheduling yearly veterinary examinations. * Keeping your pet current on recommended vaccinations to avoid preventable disease. * Ensuring proper use of preventive medications to avoid Heartworm, intestinal parasites, Tick-borne disease, and flea infestation. * Neutering or spaying your pet to avoid unwanted, and expensive, pregnancies. * Feeding your pet the right nutritional mix with a side of exercise to maintain a healthy weight. * Offering affection and play with your pet to help protect its physical and emotional health. * Outfitting your dog or cat with an ID tag or microchip with its name, address and phone number in case it gets lost. As you embark on pet parenthood, take some simple steps to ensure that you can cover pet costs through every stage of life. Start an emergency fund just in case the unthinkable happens. It’s all about having peace of mind that you’re prepared to care for the family member you love.

Sweet Dreams Do you get enough sleep each night? Or are you a “short sleeper,” someone who routinely sleeps less than seven hours per 24-hour period. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research Society both recommend that adults aged 18 to 60 sleep at least seven hours each night to promote optimal health and well-being. Increasingly, researchers are finding that poor sleep quality and duration is associated with a slew of negative health conditions such as diabetes, obesity, stroke and Alzheimer’s. So, how can you improve sleep in the face of daily stresses and work-life demands? 1) Establish a sleep routine including wind-down rituals and a consistent bedtime. These could include bathing at night, turning down lights, setting your devices to nighttime mode or Do Not Disturb, relaxing with a weighted blanket, and cutting off eating and drinking several hours before your established bedtime.

Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

2) Incorporate small, realistic changes, like adjusting your immediate environment with cooler nighttime temperatures, new bedding or limiting evening screen time, versus more drastic changes that may be hard to maintain, like cutting out coffee cold turkey. 3) Tie your new routine to existing habits. Behavioral scientists say we are more successful adopting new healthy habits when they are tethered to existing ones. If you watch TV or read to unwind before bed, adding a weighted blanket that elicits a calming sensation through the application of deep touch pressure can compound the relaxing effect. If you work out in the evenings, adding a few minutes of gentle yoga, breathwork or meditation to the end of your session can help prep your mind and body for sleep.

4) Give yourself time to settle into your new routine. There will be days where family, social or work obligations disrupt your new pattern, and cutting off screen time or eating and drinking well in advance of bedtime is an impossibility. This is where a meditation routine or weighted blanket can come in handy, helping to quickly quiet a busy mind or body close to bedtime. Eventually, you’ll be reaping the health benefits of consistent, quality sleep.

Peoria 411

As a Peoria Councilmember, I carry a fiduciary responsibility to manage taxpayer dollars responsibly. This is no easy task. With a $695 million budget, the City Council must constantly ensure that funds will be used wisely and thoughtfully. Fortunately, the City of Peoria prides itself on its longstanding financial excellence. Years ago, the Mayor and City Council adopted the Principles of Sound Financial Management, which establish firm guidelines to reinforce our fiscal stewardship. These “rules of the road” set the foundation to maintain an economically thriving community. How do finance policies shape our daily decisions? For one, they challenge the Council to consider a long-term perspective. They also

remind us to work within our means, thoughtfully manage risk, and encourage constant monitoring of performance. The benefits of this approach can be recognized nationally. Recently, the city of Peoria received a AAA credit rating, the highest rating available. Also, Peoria once again received national awards for Budget Presentation and Financial Reporting. These accomplishments help save taxpayers money when bond financing capital improvements like parks, public safety facilities, and infrastructure. Strong fiscal management also allow us to maximize new resources. In the fall, the City Council authorized funds to staff several key activities. Looking to bring our public safety to the next level, the Council approved 13 Police and 15 Fire & Medical positions. New staff will be strategically placed to expand city ambulance service, offer new police detectives for investigations, provide additional patrol officers, and support a new training officer. With an eye on our water resources, the Council also approved two positions in the Water Department concentrating on conservation and water planning. To responsibly manage continued community growth, the Council added five development and engineering positions. With a national reputation, and robust financial principles, we can witness just how effective our approach has been. In Peoria, we still enjoy lower tax and utility rates than most of our neighboring communities. It also ensures that, year in and year out, we maintain an incredibly safe community with world class amenities. This is why we chose to call Peoria our home. Stair Safety

“You may never think of safeguarding your stairs, but falls are the No. 1 reason for emergency room visits,” said Thom Disch, author, fall prevention expert and owner of Stop the Slip anti-slip products.

remove all clutter from stairs, even if decorative. • Outdoor stairs can be dangerous for your family as well as visitors, especially during winter when rain can make stairs slippery. A smart solution is non-slip stair treads and non-slip nosings. • Although not impacted by the elements, indoor stairs can be slippery as well. Common stair materials like wood, tile and stone can be slick. ClearGrip Tape can dramatically improve traction on slippery stairs and floors throughout your home.

Every second of every day, an adult age 65 or older suffers a fall in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This makes falls the leading cause of injury and injury death in this age group.Slipping and falling on stairs can dramatically alter someone’s quality of life because injury can be painful and recovery complex. To help protect your family, consider these stair safety tips: • Start by looking at all indoor and outdoor stairs for repair needs. Nails and screws should be flush with the surface. Boards should be strong without cracks or breaks, evenly spaced and level. Concrete and other materials should be free of divots and debris. Make repairs if necessary to prevent trips and falls. Additionally,

• Sturdy handrails are a necessity so people can easily grip on to them to assist in balance while navigating stairs. If possible, having railings on both sides can be even safer than just one. Make sure railings are properly installed and secured well. • Make sure to illuminate stairs properly to help prevent trips and falls. Outside, porches and entryways should be well-lit. Indoors, light switches should be easily accessible at the top and bottom of stairs. For more information and additional ideas for making your home’s stairways safer visit www. StopTheSlip.com.
