From Me To You...

I had a most wonderful experience recently. It was the occasion of my baby’s 17th birthday, and trying to find a way to celebrate that he would enjoy (and his friends would be able to participate in) during social distancing was quite a challenge. Obviously it had to be an online occasion and that actually had the advantage of opening it up to friends from near and far. I began my search. My son enjoys cooking so I thought that an online cooking class would be a fun thing to do so online I went.

I have used AirBNB on the past for my travel arrangements and had much success with that company so I looked up their online experiences for a cooking class. After many days falling down that rabbit hole I eventually chose Pietro’s Pasta Making Class. Pietro is an Italian living in Milan who has been running this online class for many month now, quite successfully if you

read his reviews. I found the most complicated part of the booking experience was figuring out a time that worked for both us and Pietro. As he is in Milan he is 8 hours ahead of us and incidently he has very young twins which complicated our schedule too. Eventually a date and time were set and invitations were sent out.

The day arrived and I was really anxious. What if it all went horribly wrong? I really wanted my son to have a great time, he has had a heck of a year and I felt that I owed him a fun birthday. I should not have worried. Pietro was a consummate professional who managed to teach the teenagers how to make pasta from scratch, introduce them to Italy and it’s beauty, and keep them all entertained at the same time. Ross not only learned how to make a wonderful meal, he was able to share the experience with friends in Ohio, Flagstaff, Phoenix and Goodyear. I will add that the pasta was delicious and so easy! If you look further in the magazine you will find the recipe so you can make some yourself.

I can also tell you that I have been bitten by the online class bug. We have a wine tasting event scheduled for later in February with adult friends, and I am going to set up a monthly date night. I am thinking of dance classes, how much fun would it be to learn Salsa without the embarrassment of being in a classroom making a fool of yourself? There are so many fun classes to choose from, GINspiration History and Cocktails, Follow a Plague Doctor Through Prague, Family Magic Show and Magic Lesson, Meet and Draw a Llama, and that is just the tip of the iceberg.

There are so many ways to learn and have fun that were not available to us before we were hit with this virus. Why not take advantage of a few and have some fun with your Valentine this year?

My daughter screamed her brother’s name. They had been walking to school from the parking lot together and he had run ahead, leaving her behind. As I took her gently by the arm she whimpered, “I asked him not to run ahead and he said he wouldn’t...”

“...and he forgot. I’m sorry.” I replied to the teary young girl. “Brush it off now, but tell him later how it made you feel. It will be ok.”

Maybe he just liked running, or being independent or because they were both 7 years old he didn’t even know why he ran off without her it was just in his nature. It could have been any of those reasons but I had a suspicion that my son was racing ahead to prove he was right.

In the car he had seen someone who had looked like a classmate and my daughter had disagreed with him. They had argued the entire way. I think he forgot his promise to his sister so he could prove he was right. And he hurt his sister when he did.

The situation reminds me that there are better things in life than being right, for instance: being kind.

I plan on having a conversation with my son to talk about what it means to be a good brother and a good friend. We sometimes have to put down our own interests to be there for someone else.

In my faith tradition we say this is being “selfsacrificing.” A good explanation comes from John 15:13.“No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

However, some people even in my faith tradition interpret this differently. They talk about giving their life to a cause (not to or for God, not for their neighbor.) They justify being violent and accepting the consequences as being selfsacrificing.

There is a difference. Sometimes laying down our life is actually laying down our own self-interests, our own egos, our own power, our own wealth or our own understandings. It is putting other people and their well-being above our own.

I have been having a hard time seeing this type of self-sacrifice in our news. I wonder if you would join me in being visible proof that it exists.

Money Matters During the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us have been forced to work from home. But once we’ve moved past the virus, many workers may continue working from home. This shift to athome work can affect people’s lives in many ways – and it may end up providing workers with some long-term financial advantages.

If you’re one of those who will continue working remotely, either full time or at least a few days a week, how might you benefit? Here are a few possibilities: • Reduced transportation costs – Over time, you can spend a lot of money commuting to and from work. The average commuter spends $2,000 to $5,000 per year on transportation costs. If you are going to work primarily from home, you should be able to greatly reduce these costs.

• Potentially lower car insurance premiums – Your auto insurance premiums are partially based on how many miles you drive each year. So, if you were to significantly reduce these miles by working from home, you might qualify for lower rates.

• Lower expenditures on lunches – If you typically eat lunch in restaurants or get takeout while at work, you could end up spending around $3,000 a year. Think how much you could reduce this bill by eating lunch at home during your remote workday.

• Lower clothing costs – Despite the rise in “casual dress” days, plenty of workers still need to maintain appropriate office attire. By working from home, you can “dress down,” reducing your clothing costs and dry-cleaning bills.

As you can see, it may be possible for you to save quite a bit of money by working from home.

You might use part of your savings generated by remote work to help build an emergency fund containing a few months’ worth of living expenses. Without this fund, you might be forced to dip into your retirement accounts to pay for something like a major home repair.

Becoming an at-home worker will no doubt require some adjustments on your part – but, in strictly financial terms, it could lead to some positive results.

Car Show

11th Annual Trilogy Roadrunners Car Show If you have a special car that you would like to show off or you are a spectator that enjoys walking among an eclectic gathering of Custom, Antique, Hot Rod, and exotic cars and trucks, then the Trilogy Roadrunners Car Show is right for you. The show is planned for March 6, 2021 from 10am to 2pm in the Trilogy at Vistancia community, 27980 N. Trilogy Boulevard, Peoria.

This event is one of the many fundraising events put on by the Trilogy Roadrunners Car Club.

This year net proceeds will be donated to the Arizona Coronavirus Relief Fund.

If you want to show your car, registration is now open to the public and is accessed through the “Register Here” button on the front page of the club’s website www.trilogyroadrunners.com .

A $20 donation for registering your car is payable on the day of the show. This outdoor event has space for 96 vehicles. The spaces always fill up quickly, so do not hesitate if you are interested in showing your car.

Spectator participation is open to the public and it is FREE. The show will have music and an outdoor café with food and beverages available. Door prize tickets are for sale to all at the show, with a door prize chosen each halfhour throughout the event. Car judging is done by participant and spectator ballots with 1st and 2nd place trophies given in two categories.

The first category is for cars entered by Trilogy Roadrunner Club Members. The second category is for the cars of Guests from outside Trilogy.

Pietro’s Pasta

Ingredients 2 large eggs 1 cup all purpose flour

Directions • Pour the cup of flour onto a clean work surface and make a well in the middle.

• Crack both eggs into the middle of the flour and using a fork lightly whisk the eggs making sure not to break the flour walls.

• Gradually incorporate the flour walls into the egg by scraping small amounts into the center and whisking

together.

• Once the pasta has combined into a ball put the fork aside and start kneading. Don’t worry if not all the flour was used to get to this stage. If your pasta is sticky then add more flour!

• Knead until dough bounces back after pressing your fingers into it.

• Cover the dough and let it rest for 20 mins.

• Liberally dust your surface and pasta with flour and roll it until it is thin enough to see through. Keep adding flour to prevent sticking.

Traditionally pasta is ready when you can read a newspaper through it!

Cut your pasta into desired shape, we tried squares then pinched the center to create bow ties, and cut into thin strips to create fettuccine ribbons. What ever you do, have fun with it!

Cook in boiling salted water for 1-2 minutes Serve with your favorite sauce or go for a simple butter and Parmesan topping.

Non-Stress Powers Of Attorney Powers of attorney are helpful to avoid the stress that can arise if you need assistance due to illness.

Dealing with financial institutions or hospitals can be difficult even when there are no issues about capacity. Powers of attorney are needed to authorize your agent to act without you having to be declared incapacitated. When a doctor provides a letter that a person is incapacitated, then the person loses the legal ability to handle finances or even healthcare decisions.

The durable financial power of attorney identifies the person who can legally assist you with paying bills and accessing your accounts for funds you need.

Even a spouse cannot withdraw funds from an IRA for you unless you have a durable financial power of attorney. The medical healthcare power of attorney identifies an agent, such as a trusted family member or friend, who can give consent to medical treatment if you cannot. Arizona law also allows for the mental healthcare power of attorney which helps avoid costly court intervention when there is mental illness, brain injury, dementia or Alzheimer’s.

Without powers of attorney, the court must get involved.

Two lawyers need to be hired; one for the patient and a one for agent or petitioner.

After a court investigation, a hearing is held in open court—which is set commonly 45 days after a petition is filed. Time, money and privacy is saved by appointing an agent through powers of attorney.

The city of Peoria is painting the picture of the city’s art landscape with the launch of the new city arts master plan. The city has contracted the consulting firm, Designing Local, to engage our community and create the Peoria Arts Master Plan to coincide with the city’s newly adopted General Plan. The new arts master plan will assist the mayor, city council, the Arts Commission, and city staff in defining priorities and guide our planning and decisions for the next 10 years.

The current arts master plan was adopted by council in 2009 and has served the city well in establishing the Percent for the Arts Fund, the Arts Commission, and the priorities for public art and the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts. The new version of the arts master plan will focus on community engagement, positioning Peoria for the anticipated growth the city will see over the next 10 years. Arts, culture, and recreation are key categories in the city’s livability goals, and they are distinguishing factors in differentiating Peoria from other West Valley cities.

The return on investment in a strong master plan can be calculated in so many ways. It’s the tourist who comes for a photo in front of a mural, a sculpture or a lighting installation. It’s the family who buys a home because they are inspired by the local park’s public artwork. Art sets a city apart and gives it a personality. The arts create

jobs, encourage critical thinking and attract businesses to our community. Most importantly, arts, culture and recreational amenities and programs give our residents a sense of pride and belonging, create a quality of life, and attract visitors to our city.

Once we are back to in-person events, be on the lookout for your opportunity to connect with the Arts and Events Team and share your ideas for the future of Peoria. There will also be many virtual opportunities to engage as well.

Sleep Apnea

If you’re not coping with the symptoms of sleep apnea yourself, you likely know someone who is.

The condition caused by interrupted breathing during sleep has become rampant in the past couple of decades. Despite that prevalence 80% of moderate and severe obstructive sleep apnea cases in the U.S. go undiagnosed. One reason for this is that common myths around sleep apnea create confusion and keep many people from fully understanding the condition.

To help better inform people who could unknowingly be suffering from obstructive sleep apnea, here’s a roundup of the five most common misconceptions out there when it comes to the abnormal breathing problem.

Myth No. 1: Sleep apnea is basically harmless.

Not true. Complications of sleep apnea can include high blood pressure, heart problems, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome or liver problems. Daytime fatigue resulting from sleep apnea can also contribute to irritability, difficulty concentrating or depression, and put you at

greater risk of motor vehicle and workplace accidents.

Myth No. 2: CPAP machines are bulky, cumbersome and a hassle to use.

While CPAP machines may have been bulky in the past, newer models are significantly lighter and easier to transport.

Myth No. 3: Only obese people get sleep apnea.

While more than half of people with obstructive sleep apnea are categorized as either overweight or obese, the causes of the sleep disorder are complex and are not boiled down to just one factor. In fact, lean, physically fit people can also develop the condition. Additionally, after the age of 60, the impact of BMI on sleep apnea is less significant.

Myth No. 4: If you don’t snore, you don’t have sleep apnea.

Up to 20% of patients who have sleep apnea don’t snore.

Myth No. 5: Only older people suffer from sleep apnea.

Not so. While the disorder is more common after age 40, it can affect people of all ages - even children. Sleep apnea can also run in families, making some genetically pre-disposed to it.

Sleep apnea can be a serious condition but understanding its symptoms and keeping up on the best treatments available are the first steps toward managing it effectively.

Kindergarten Prep The start of the new year may seem early to start thinking about the first day of school, but for families with children entering kindergarten next school year, it’s not too soon to get ready.

In fact, many schools hold their kindergarten registration events beginning this month.

The first step is for parents to contact their local school for kindergarten registration information.

Then, at home, no matter what back-to-school situation families may face there are things families can do to help their child be successful on the first day of kindergarten. First Things First (FTF), Arizona’s early childhood agency, has resources to help parents and caregivers online on the FTF Kindergarten Readiness page, found at https://www.firstthingsfirst.org/resources/ kindergarten-readiness/.

Below are some tips from FTF to help ease your preschooler’s transition to kindergarten: · Read with your child at least 20 minutes per day. This can be done by having short reading sessions throughout the day to add up to 20 minutes total, which can help with shorter attention spans. Try books that repeat words; involve activities like counting, identifying colors, objects or letters; or, are about things your child likes. Ask questions like, “What do you think happens next?” · Talk with your child everywhere – at home, in the car, at the store. Have real conversations with your preschooler. Make up stories or songs about your outings. · Writing begins with scribbling. Give your child safe writing tools to play with, like crayons, chalk or markers and blank paper. Ask your child to tell you about their drawings. Also, writing requires fine motor strength. Your child can build hand strength by playing with play dough.

· Teach your child how to use the bathroom by themselves, to wash their hands after going to the bathroom and before eating, to blow their nose and sneeze into their elbow. · Since preschoolers may be in places where cloth face coverings are required, help them get used to wearing them. The American Academy of Pediatrics offers reassurance that mask wearing becomes routine when reinforced by adults and peers, just like wearing a bicycle helmet and buckling into their car seats.

Even if you don’t have kindergarteners this year, it’s never too early to start helping kids prepare.

Children who have positive early childhood experiences tend to score higher on school readiness assessments and are more likely to do well in school and graduate.
