From Me To You... I have a very unusual dog. On the surface he looks like many other large mixed breed dogs, fuzzy and floppy with an adorable face. But he is not like other dogs.

To start with we chose this breed because one of our children has allergies. The side benefit of this is a dog that rarely sheds. Except for Hank. He sheds, boy does he shed. Five minutes after vacuuming the house there are blonde tumbleweeds rolling across the kitchen floor. He also has allergies. Any cats make him sneeze convulsively. Aerosol sprays do that too. His nose runs all the time. I am often found in front of the dog, tissue in hand yelling “Blow Hank!” Doesn’t help. His allergies also give him red ‘hot spots’ on his belly. So we give him allergy pills that seem to help - and cost a small fortune. He is a sweet boy, however he has issues on top of the allergies. I think he has FOMO - fear of missing out. He has to be the first up the stairs and into rooms, like he is worried he will miss something if he doesn’t see it before us. I quite often fake him out and send him crashing up the stairs while I wander quietly into the kitchen.

“Get out! Get out! Get out!” As long as no-one goes underwater he is fine yelling from the side. Once a head goes underwater he turns into Hank the Lifesaving Lifeguard. He catapults himself into the water - still barking which is comical because he ends up swallowing so much water he starts to choke. Not deterred by the water rushing into his mouth he bravely paddles over to the person in need of rescue and proceeds to try and grab them with his paws. This results in scratches and yelling and everyone leaving the pool. All kidding aside, Hank is my loyal companion, lying by my feet as I work and loving us all fiercely, and I wouldn’t trade him for any other dog in the world. Catherine Uretsky Editor, Mountain View Magazine info@estrellapublishing.com 623.594.9283 If you have a photo you think is cover-worthy send it to me at catherine@estrellapartners.com

Hank has two speeds; relaxed, calm companion and hyper, neurotic dervish. We have a retired service animal in the family and we often joke that Hank could do with his own Emotional Support dog. My sister met him for the first time and commented that he was ‘Rather Special’ and I will admit that he is at his best when Mickey (the aforementioned service dog) is by his side. One of his more ‘endearing characteristics’ is his love for his family. Unfortunately this means we can never use the pool until Hank is safely tucked away out of sight and earshot. You see he firmly believes that we can’t swim. He can swim and is very good at it but when we get in the pool Hank’s protective instincts go into overdrive. He barks like a lunatic from the edge, seeming to say 4 Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

On Our Cover - Food For Kidz Food for Kidz is an international, non-profit organization based in Stewart, MN that is dedicated to feeding nutritious meals to hungry children and their families. To accomplish this lofty and humanitarian goal, Food for Kidz facilitates packing events around the country. The need for food locally and globally remains a constant need and increasing challenge.

Trilogy at Vistancia’s volunteer team, Wings at Work, hosts a series of events and fundraisers to benefit the work of Food for Kidz. Each year the efforts culminate in the annual packing day, where tens of thousands of meals are prepared. The Trilogy community is entering its 13th year of participation with Food for Kidz. Over the last 12 years Trilogy residents and community volunteers have raised over $250,000 and packed over 1,500,000 meals. Fifty percent of the meals packed are donated to food banks in the Phoenix area and fifty percent are sent to other areas in distress in the United States and around the world.

Food for Kidz is a 501(c)(3) charity. All donations are tax deductible! Our fundraising activities make possible our community Pack Day event which will be held this year on March 5, 2019. In addition to hundreds of Trilogy residents who eagerly volunteer to pack the meals, we are assisted by the Peoria Fire and Police Departments, city dignitaries, and many Trilogy clubs. You can make a donation and/or volunteer to work the Pack Day event by going tothe Food for Kidz website, http://trilogyfoodforkidz.com. Remember, it only takes$.15 to fund one meal. Any monetary donation or time commitment will help eradicate hunger in the Phoenix area and throughout the world….one kid at a time!

Once funds are raised, Trilogy at Vistancia uses these funds to purchase ingredients, supplies and distribution materials from the International Organizationto use on Pack Day. The Food for Kidz meal is a carefully formulated mixture of nutritionally sustainable ingredients that include protein, rice, soy and dehydrated vegetables, in addition to essential vitamins and minerals. The meals are parceled in packaging that insures it arrives fresh and ready to prepare with minimal supplies. Our 2019 goal is to raise $25,000 and pack 150,000 meals! However, this can onlybe done with generous donations and volunteers. Positive Parenting Whether you’re expecting your first child or you’ve been around the baby block a few times before, there are always a lot of questions when preparing for parenthood. Feeding often tops the list, leaving moms puzzled at which are the best ways to nourish their little ones. On formula containers there are specific measurements that typically call for mixing powder and water, yet an alarming 21 percent of moms say they have used more water than required by the instructions when preparing formula. Nearly half stated their primary reason was to help save money or make formula last longer. “Many new moms have the misconception that diluting formula with water will help save money or make it easier for baby to digest,” says Dr. Jennifer Gardner, family physician and co-author of The Mommy MD Guide to Your Baby’s First Year. “Diluting critical nutrients in formula at a time of rapid growth can be dangerous for their baby. Parents should always follow preparation instructions on the product label and consult with their pediatrician to talk through infant-feeding options.” Bottle preparation often causes confusion for moms. When warming infant formula, half of moms said they always or sometimes use the microwave to make a bottle. The problem is microwaving formula bottles can affect ingredients and cause hot spots that might burn a baby’s mouth. What many parents don’t realize is formula does not need to be warmed before it is given to baby. 6 Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

If your child happens to prefer a warm bottle, place it under warm running water and make sure that water isn’t getting into the bottle, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Before feeding, test the temperature of the bottle by putting a few drops on the back of your hand to ensure it’s not too hot. If baby doesn’t finish a bottle, it’s tempting to put it in the fridge for later, but this can be a mistake. The survey found 51 percent of moms have thrown a partially used infant formula bottle back in the fridge to use for the next feeding time. This is dangerous because bacteria can grow and the nutritional profile of the formula can diminish. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), formula not fed to baby can be stored in the refrigerator for 24 hours if you are making it ahead of time. However, once you feed a bottle to baby, you must discard the remaining contents after one hour from the start of that feeding. According to the survey, 20 percent of moms worried about what formula to purchase in the first few months of their baby’s life. “All infant formulas are required to meet the same FDA standards, which means store-brand formula has the same quality as other brand names but costs less. More importantly, there’s no need for parents to take unnecessary risks such as diluting formula to save money when they can trust that store-brand formula is a high-quality and affordable option.” Learn more at www.storebrandformula.com. Peace On Earth Bringing Encouragement

It’s easy to misunderstand God and the Bible when there are many common misquotes that are attributed to the Bible. The Bible doesn’t say “Cleanliness is next to godliness,” “God works in mysterious ways,” “Everything happens for a reason,” or “God helps those who help themselves.” Nor does the Bible say, “God won’t give you more than you can handle.” What God said through the prophet Isaiah is, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.” (Isaiah 43:2) God was speaking to the Israelite people who had been in exile about sixty years and were disheartened. They were due for some encouragement and you may be as well. The scripture does not read, “If you pass through the waters.” It reads, “When you pass

through the waters.” News flash: we live in a fallen world. Bad stuff happens in this world. Loved ones die. People are in car accidents. Homes burn down. Relationships fall apart. Jobs are lost. Diseases abound. The world is not as God created it and has not been since Adam and Eve. Stuff happens in this world. Some is the consequence of human error and the unthinking actions of others. There will be rising waters, raging rivers and fires in our lives. The good news is, God promises to be with us. We don’t face obstacles alone. God jumps in the waters with us and guides us through our challenges. He may act divinely or work through people. We are often the hands, feet, and heart of God here on earth. Think about a tough time in your life. Do you remember people speaking the right words of comfort at the right time? Calling, sending a card or showing up just when you needed it? How about that co-worker who encouraged you and stood by? Or the surprise check from a loved one who knew nothing of your challenge? Or the way things ‘just happened’ to fall into place when you needed? Could it be that this was God’s redemptive work in your tough situation? I have come to recognize that ‘coincidences’ are more often over looked ‘God-incidences!’ Consider this. God may be nudging you, placing you in just the right place at the right time, to serve as his hands and feet offering God’s presence through your words and actions to someone else who needs encouragement. Will you help? Consider these two thoughts: God’s best purposes are often accomplished through people he directs. You might be the next to help in amazing ways beyond your understanding. Decorators Corner

It’s here, the season of resolutions. You’re making plans for new routines, working a full-time job and taking care of your family. It’s a whirlwind but you wouldn’t have it any other way. Now you just have to find time to refresh your decor for the year ahead. With so much to do and so little time, you’re naturally looking for ways to update your home without too much effort. Opt for easier with the tips below. * Add a little color to your home. In the summer colorful flowers can make any room welcoming, but in the winter your options for foliage are ... limited. Don’t fret or forgo the opportunity to add some natural accents to your home. Evergreen sprigs added to vases can bring a flora component to any room and infuse a seasonal dash of color. Forsythia is an early blooming shrub that can provide a beautiful pop of yellow color. Place these in the same areas you would summer flowers and you’ll love the fresh effect they create. * Photo-friendly options. Family photos are a mainstay in any home and this season is the

perfect time to take your photo displays up a notch. Freestanding photo panels - available at CVS - provide a new and exciting way to showcase your favorite family moments. * Let there be light. Stringing lights around the outside of your home is an annual holiday tradition, but why not keep inside lights throughout winter? String lights through the main entertaining areas of your home using insulated holders, just be sure to check the wires for fraying before you do. This is a great way to add light during shorter winter days, and because so many lights run on batteries and can be equipped with timers, it’s easier than ever to conserve energy Start your planning today Optimizing your decorating with the tips above will keep your home looking fresh without a lot of effort, and that’s something that will bring you peace and joy this year and beyond.

Where’s My Flying Car? Do you remember being a child, sitting in front of a glowing television? Eyes wide, legs crossed and a little bowl of marshmallow-filled breakfast cereal in front of you? The familiar theme song would play, and there they’d be - that futuristic

family in a flying cartoon car. It was an incredible sight, one that filled us with wonder and excitement, and the hope of having our very own airborne automobile by 2020. While we wait for that innovation to come to mass-market fruition, the reality of putting your car on autopilot from A to B is right around the corner.

distraction on the road.

3. Expectation: Cars that can take care of themselves. Nearly half of Americans would love to see their cars equipped with self-maintenance capabilities. In reality, today’s maintenance technology can predict things like how far you can go until your next oil change. Now just imagine ... how easy would it be if your car couldn’t just tell you it’s time to take it in, but get the job done for you? 4. Expectation: Driverless vehicles for everyone. Autonomous vehicle technology is certainly speeding forward, and there are some who argue it will help create a safer drive down the road. The survey found that men are nearly twice as likely to opt for self-driving capabilities as women. There’s no telling how long it will take to get us to a flying future, or even a fully self-driving one but we can expect some fascinating futuristic tech to come.

Here are four more futuristic expectations drivers have set as they look down the road: 1. Expectation: Tires that never go flat. Americans consider the run-flat tire to be the biggest tire technology achievement in recent history. 44 percent are looking to see selfrepairing tires as an imminent innovation. 2. Expectation: A distraction-less drive. There has been plenty of advancement in tools to downplay distracted driving - think Bluetooth, “Do Not Disturb” and similar functions for our mobile devices. It’s too bad there hasn’t been a way to keep our eyes off the other drivers. More than half say that other people’s bad driving is their top 10 Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

Cookies!

Cool cookies before applying toppings so they won’t melt or run. * Use high-quality ingredients. Make sure your flour and raising agents haven’t sat in your cupboard too long, losing their effectiveness.

Experienced bakers know how to achieve perfect cookies every time. But don’t worry! There’s no need to buy high-priced equipment or enroll in culinary school. Here are a few simple tips for delectable cookies. * Invest in a food scale. This is important when measuring flour, which settles and varies in density if scooped. * Chill the dough. After mixing ingredients, chilling cookie dough prevents cookies from overspreading while baking. * Use parchment paper. Parchment paper on cookie sheets does wonders for preventing overdone cookie bottoms. * Hone your decorating strategy. Use a variety of cookie cutters to achieve perfect shapes.

Here is a classic recipe to delight your family and guests. Deluxe Sugar Cookies: 1 cup butter or margarine, softened 1 cup sugar 1 egg, beaten 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract 1/2 teaspoon Pure Almond Extract

2 tablespoons milk 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder Frosting:

4 cups powdered sugar 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened 3 to 4 tablespoons milk 1 to 2 teaspoons Orange, Lemon or Peppermint Extract, to taste Assorted Food Coloring Cookies: Combine butter, sugar, egg, extracts and milk in large bowl. Stir in flour and baking powder; mix well. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm. Heat oven to 400 F. On lightly floured surface, roll dough one third at a time to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with floured cookie cutter. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 6 to 9 minutes or until edges are light brown. Immediately remove to cool on wire rack. Frosting: Combine all ingredients; beat until smooth.

Retirement Planning If you’re like many Americans, retirement planning may not be high on your “to-do” list. When life is busy and you’re shouldering the burden of looking out for yourself and your family, setting up a retirement plan can slide down the priority list. But if you look at the root causes of inertia behind retirement planning, it’s clear how the effects from your behavior can be significant. Below are some insights to help you get on track and better understand the kinds of behaviors that can get in the way of planning for your financial future.

1. Put simply, it’s overwhelming. Saving for retirement can feel open-ended and ambiguous, in large part because it’s difficult to predict just how much you’ll need. Adding to the stress are many hard-to-anticipate variables, including how long you will live and healthcare needs. The good news is there are on-line calculators that can assist you in determining what your future needs may entail. 2. We can’t see our “future selves.” It’s not just young people who have difficulty imagining how

long they’ll live in retirement - older Americans also often underestimate how long their retirement nest egg will have to last. Increased life expectancy means we may live 20 or 30 years - or even longer - in retirement. The good news is that companies like Prudential Retirement now offer interactive games like an Aging App to help people better understand how the decisions they make today could influence their futures. 3. We procrastinate planning for retirement. Research shows that for many people, procrastination plays a big role in hindering retirement planning. On average, we spend two hours a day procrastinating. In our busy lives, it’s often easier to daydream about our future than it is to spend time planning for it. The good news is that if you haven’t begun saving for retirement, it’s never too late to begin. Try taking a small step forward and consider setting aside 1 percent of your paycheck for a retirement account. Or, if you already have a retirement account but you’re saving very little, increase your contribution by 1 percent. 4. Budgetary pressures. Families have other future needs to plan for, such as their kids’ college education or saving for a down payment for a home. Add in the immediate need to cover day-to-day expenses, and it always feels like it’s “the wrong time” to save for retirement. Take time to educate yourself and become familiar with the various tools that are available. The good news is that people may be better able to achieve the financial future they hope for as they grow older.

Home Sweet Home Fear of spiders is consistently ranked as one of the top phobias in America. Whether it is an evolutionary trigger that kept our ancestors alive or the result of Hollywood horror films, spiders have a reputation as being creepy, crawly, venomous pests.

But spiders aren’t all bad. They do provide a form of natural pest control by catching insects in their webs. However, that doesn’t mean they have an open invitation to come into our homes. A spider infestation can cause contamination of food in kitchens or pantries, and depending on the species, there could be health risks if family members unexpectedly happen upon a web or lurking spider. Taking action to prevent spiders goes a long way in avoiding these risks. • Keep garages, attics and basements clean and clutter-free. Most spiders seek out secluded, undisturbed areas where they can build a web to catch their next meal, so an attic or basement that has been left unused over the past season could be harboring these pests out of sight. Avoid leaving clothing and shoes on the floor and consider storing them inside plastic containers. It is also advised to shake out all clothing that has been in a hamper before wearing or washing. • Seal any cracks or crevices around the home. Spiders can crawl into homes through damaged window screens

14 Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

or cracks in the siding. The outside of homes should be inspected for these defects seasonally as weather and changes in temperature can cause or worsen existing problems. • Inspect items such as boxes of decorations and grocery bags before bringing them indoors. Packages are often left on the front step if delivered when you’re not at home, and groceries might be placed on the driveway while unloading. These are opportunities for spiders and other pests to crawl onto bags and boxes and be carried inside. Inspecting packages before bringing them into your home reduces this risk. If you have an infestation in your home, contact a licensed pest professional. Being proactive about spider control will reduce the likelihood of any species making a home in your abode and possibly harming a member of your family. But if you suspect you have a spider infestation in your home, contact a pest professional to identify the species and properly remove the pests. Furry Friends

Pet owners will do just about anything they can to keep their furry friends happy and healthy, which is why the vast majority of pet owners say they’re concerned about the ingredients in their pet’s food. Yet many dog and cat owners are often confused about what constitutes safe and healthy food, have misperceptions about ingredients, and aren’t clear about what types of nutrients their pets need. A lot of thought has been put into the ingredients in the pet food you see on shelves and online, including nutritional breakthroughs that will help pets of all ages live their best life. Since pets clearly have different nutritional needs than their owners, pet food scientists have developed complete and balanced meals that give pets all the nutrition they need in one product. Pet food companies look beyond the latest ingredient fad and develop pet food based on a smart blend of nutrients that supports pets’ overall health. When developing pet food formulas, scientists keep in mind that some pets have unique dietary

Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

needs. They also account for pets who have ongoing concerns and formulate pet food based on age. Simply put, puppies and kittens have much different dietary needs than older dogs and cats. Misinformation and lack of clarity about food science techniques have prompted people to change how they eat. In the pet world, this has led some owners to develop their own DIY food plans. But despite their best intentions, they may actually be depriving their pets of critical nutrients they need to stay healthy. This is where knowing your pet’s nutritional needs comes into play. When it comes to feeding your pet, it’s important to understand that high-quality nutrition starts with nutrients, not just ingredients. Although the level of research may be similar among brands, the actual formulas can be quite different. To keep your pet feeling their best, try to match their food with their lifestyle and activity level. For example, if your dog is your daily running buddy, make sure they are getting enough protein and fat in their diet . When in doubt, consult your veterinarian to better understand the specific needs of your pet.
